Step 1 Free talk The teacher introduces the lesson by asking students at random: Do you like your new high school life What do you usually do after class The teacher draws students’ attention to the activity of “starting a new school club” and explains the meaning of “school club”. Students come up with their own plans of starting a school club. (T: Hello, boys and girls. Since you have been in senior high school for some time, what’s your feeling about your new school life T: You know, there are various clubs in our school, such as the English Speech Club, the Football Club and so on. Do you want to join any school club T: Do you want to have any new clubs If possible, what kind of club do you want to start Do you know how to start a club Today we will first listen to a conversation about starting a new school club, and then read a proposal for a new club.) 导入话题,通过自由发言,激发学生学习兴趣,激活已有的相关知识和经验。让学生有话可说,有话能说。
Step 2 Listening 1. Pre-listening T encourages Ss to predict before listening to the conversation. 1. What is the probable relationship between the two speakers 2. What is the main idea of the conversation Students finish A1 on Page 8 by putting the steps of starting a new school club in the correct order. T: Go through the steps of part A1and circle the key information. Then, try to put the steps in your own order. Possible key information: a Give the signed proposal to Mr Zhou. b With Mr Zhou’s help, find a place for the club and set up the first meeting. c Write a proposal for the new club. d Wait for the proposal to be accepted by the principal. e Find at least five students to sign up for the first meeting. c-e-a-d-b 2. While-listening (1) Ss listen to the conversation for the first time and finish the exercise of A1. T: Now, please listen to the conversation and put the steps of A1 in the correct order. After that, compare your version with the correct one. (2) Ss read A2, try filling in the blanks and then listen again to check their answers. T: Since you have understood the right steps of starting the new club, now please go through the rubrics of A2. Then listen to their conversation again and get more detailed information. Are your original answers different from the right ones (3) Ss listen again and pay attention to the wording and intonation of Maggie and Mr Zhou. Try to figure out their identities and personalities. T: Boys and girls, when we listen to a conversation, we should try to feel the emotions and personalities of the people. Can you say something about Maggie and Mr Zhou For example, you can describe them in this way: Maggie shows great respect for Mr Zhou when asking about starting a new school club. She is brave and enthusiastic, while Mr. Zhou is very friendly and easy-going and patient. Take notes if necessary. 3. Post-listening (1) T asks Ss to retell the main points of the conversation. (2) T helps Ss to summarize the useful listening strategies they employed while listening. 【设计意图:鼓励和激发学生通过阅读题干,猜测人物关系和对话内容,并尝试先完成A1的排序练习,最大化地进行听前预热】 【设计意图:第一遍听完,让学生把自己的预测顺序和听到的正确顺序进行对比;第二遍听完,让学生完成细节信息的填空; 听第三遍,提醒学生关注人物的身份、语言特点、恰当表达。】 【设计意图:听后让学生进行转述,巩固所学内容;学生尝试总结听力方法,增强学习策略,同时为下一步阅读做好准备。】
Step 3 Reading Maggie’s proposal 1. Before reading T asks Ss to come up with items the proposal might include before reading T: My young friends, after the conversation, Maggie wrote a proposal for her club. Now, let’s list some items her proposal might include. For example, her proposal might cover the club name, the club leader, the club aim and so on. Can you come up with other items 2. Critical reading T encourages Ss to compare their version with Maggie’s proposal T: Now, turn to Page 9 and read the proposal carefully. Is it different from yours Which is better Why 3. Reading for the structure T helps students to know what a formal proposal is like and enhances Ss’ understanding of the structure. T: As we can see, the structure of a proposal should include such elements. Next period, you are supposed to write a proposal. The teacher guides students to read the proposal written by Maggie on Page 9 and has students try to understand the structure of a proposal by asking: How many parts does this proposal contain What are these parts What sentence pattern is used most frequently in the proposal What are the writing features of a proposal letter 【设计意图:读前预测,让学生头脑风暴Maggie的提议中可能会包含哪些项目。】 【设计意图:让学生通过对比,对提议的内容有更深理解。】 【设计意图:老师总结正式proposal的语言特点,如它的layout,再如圆点后都是祈使句,最后还有signature。】
Step 4 After reading, students engage in the discussion: If you were Maggie’s classmate, would you join her Short Story Writing Club Why Suppose you are given a chance, what kind of club are you going to start 创设真实情境,旨在肯定学生的思辨精神。让学生将所学知识转换为实际语言运用能力。
