Since the earliest times, people have looked up at the stars, the moon and the planets.Thousands of years ago, people used to look at the sky with their eyes. But today people are used to 31 at the sky with modern machines. Perhaps they dreamed of knowing more about the universe.
When did human first go to space The story began not so very long ago, 32 the first astronauts were not people—they were animals.
Scientists wanted to make travelling to space as 33 as possible for humans. So they decided to experiment with animals and test them in space flights. Insects, mice, frogs, dogs and monkeys were some of the animals that first went into space. Many of them died but they helped to make space travel safer for human. Nowadays, there's lots of advice on how to give praise and positive comments to others, but few suggestions on how to receive the flattering(奉承的) messages. 36 praise can make us feel uncomfortable even if we are proud of our achievements. This is exactly how I felt at my dad's birthday party.
Just a few days before, I received my university 37 ;my parents were so proud of me. On arrival, every guest already knew my grades. As the party went on, I was surrounded(围绕) by so much unexpected praise! 38 about stealing my dad's spotlight(焦点),I tried to turn the kind attention away from 39 by joking that the professor must have been in a very good 40 when she marked my paper, and that I was just“lucky”.
Few of us wish to appear vain(自负的) for fear that our honor will cause envy 41 others. In the workplace, there's fear that praise might bring 42 work and higher expectations.
Looking back, the praise I received from the guests at the party was heartfelt(真诚的). My degree hadn't helped them in any way so there was no duty for them to comment, 43 they still cared enough to say“well done”. 44 ignoring(忽视) the praise, I should comment on how kind they were for noticing, or how pleased I was with my achievements.
Another good choice is to“forward”praise—perhaps other people played a part in your success and deserve(应得) to share the attention. If you're still 45 for words, a simple“thank you”is the best way to go. So, the next time you get the praise you deserve, don't hide your pride and try to enjoy the moment.

There have recently been a lot of arguments about homework. As a teacher, I strongly believe in the benefits of quality homework. Besides preparing students for university life, it teaches important life skills that will benefit(使受益) students for the rest of their lives.
Some people argue that homework is causing stress and depression(抑郁) to rise in children. But to blame(责怪) homework for these health problems is wrong. Social pressures cause more stress for teenagers than homework. If people really care about the health of students, they would spend more time solving the problems that cause pressure in schools rather than complaining about homework.
In addition, those who are against homework believe that students end up hating the time spent instead of enjoying learning. However, the problem is the type of homework being assigned(布置). It is the quality not quantity(数量) of homework that will improve students’ learning and their enjoyment. Repetitive(重复的) worksheets where students remember historical dates and names or so lve math problems over and over again are less beneficial than more creative project-based homework.
Primary students will finally be in middle and high school where homework will be assigned. If they have preparation in primary schools, they will easily adjust to life with homework later. The important thing is to assign just enough homework to help students learn.
In fact, homework allows parents to be aware of what their child is doing at school and how well their academic(学术的) and thinking skills are developing. If they notice that their child is taking an unreasonable amount of time completing their homework, parents can call the teacher's attention to the problem.
Finally, homework help s to teach students important study and life skills that will set them up for future success. They learn how to manage their time so that they can finish their homework and other activities. At times, they might try very hard to complete the homework, but by working through it, they learn not to lose heart. These are skills that will not only benefit them in their academic life but in their adult lives as well.
We should realize quality hómework can help to show children the connection between what they are learning in school and how it can be used outside of schools, and it should allow the students to have fun while, doing it. Learning should not only be contained within a classroom; it should be extended to all areas of our lives.
49. Which of the following phrases has the similar meaning to“adjust to”
A. get tired of B. get used to C. feel worried about D. feel curious about
50. What can we know about quality homework from the text
A. It causes many physical and mental problems to students.
B. It has nothing do to with students'study and life skills.
C. Students only need to do it at primary and middle school.
D. Students can prepare for their future better by doing it.
51. What does the writer think of homework
A. The influence of homework is beyond the teachers' control.
B. Whether homework is helpful or not depends on its quality.
C. Homework is far more important than any other school activity.
D. Homework should be finished in class instead of after school.

One early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book calledBest Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. I was only interested in the word“Poems”appeared in big, hot pink letters.
“Is it good ”I asked her.
“Yeah,”she answered.“There's one I really like and you'll like it, too.”I leaned forward.
九年级英语 第 8 页 共 12 页
“‘Patty Poem,’”she read the title. Who is Patty I wondered. The poem began:
She never puts her toys away,
Just leaves them in a mess where they lay,...
The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:
When she grows and gathers poise(稳重),
I'll miss her harum-scarum(莽撞的) noise,
And look helplessly for scattered(散乱的) 57 .
And I'll be sad.
A terrible deep sadness washed over me. Whoever Patty was, she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.
“It's you, honey,”My mother said sadly.
To my mother, the poem showed a parent's love when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the“she”in the poem was horror. It was my mama who would be sad. It was so terrible I burst out crying.
“What's wrong ”my mother asked.
“Oh Mama,”I cried.“I don't want to grow up ever!”
She smiled.“Honey, it's okay. You're not growing up anytime soon. And when you do, I'll still love you, okay ”
“Okay,”I was still weeping. My fear has gone. But I could not help thinking about that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple I could clearly understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now attracted by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person's world.
I have since fallen in love with other poems, but“Patty Poem”remains my poem. After all,“Patty Poem”gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.

This is an unusual truth that anyone older than 25 will already know: as life goes on, time seems to speed up. Think back to childhood when holidays seemed to last forever and you attended a school for what felt like decades. Now consider last year, by contrast, and it probably raced by. As those in their 30s and 40s will know, the effect gets worse with age—and, for people in their 70s,a year can flash by in what seems like days.“Where did the time go ”we wonder.
The best reason is that we can keep the important facts in mind longer when our brains have to process more information. Childhood and young adulthood are full of novelty(新奇)—the first time you rode a bike, had a romance, got a job—but, as we get older, things get more routine(常规). You can test this out by remembering a recent experience of novelty in your life, such as travel. A few years back, I went skiing for the first time, and that four-day trip still feels“long”. But I might have difficulty noticing a four-day period in my ordinary life.
One way that can work things out, then, is easy to see: try lots of new things. Travel more, if you can, and to strange places. Try new hobbies and meet new people—you’ll be using your brain with a lot of efforts, and the result will be a life that feels longer, more meaningful. But small changes work, too: even making a change in the route(路线) you take to the office, reading different kinds of novels or choosing a different place to buy your sandwich at lunchtime will have an
九年级英语 第 10 页 共 12 页
influence on your feelings.
But novelty can only go so far. Besides, a fulfilling(令人满意的) life requires routine: you can't build deep relationships, or rise through the ranks at work if you always make new friends or get new jobs or even have new husbands or wives. That's why the Buddhist teacher Shinzen Young suggests another method: learn to meditate(冥想). Even a few minutes a day will get you to have better concentration(专注), and the better you get at concentrating, the more information your brain will take in during any experience, no matter how boring.
You need to believe in yourself. You'll be making your whole life a little more novel(新颖的).You'll be more present and time will pass less quickly; in fact, you'll make your life longer—without magic pills or creative medical technology.
How to stop time 71___up
The problem It is not a common truth to anyone who is 72___25 years old that time seems to go faster as life goes on. The 73___you get, the faster time races by.
The 74___of the problem When things become usual in our life, it might be 75____for you to pay attention to them and so on time passes by. So, experiencing something fresh and special can make you 76___things longer.
Advice on how to solve the problem ●It takes you a lot of efforts to use your brain when trying new things, making you feel that your life is longer and 77___more to you. ●Changing something a little can also make a 78___to your feelings. ●Learning to meditate helps people 79___their concentration and take in more information from boring experiences.
Conclusion Trust yourself. 80___there might be no new medical technology, you can still live a bit more novel life and experiencing slow flow of time actually makes your life longer.
