You’re at your new school. It’s lunch time, but you don’t have anyone to sit with. You want to
join someone at their table, 36 you’re not sure if they’re friendly. What do you do Natalie’s
way of 37 the problem was to create an app. She found it difficult to make new friends and had

The app called Sit With Us is simple. If a student is having lunch in the afternoon, he or she can

The English mom Liz Pinfield-Wells has a DIY recycling(回收) center in her garden. She has
recycled 1,200kg of rubbish and raised money for her local community along the way.
Liz built the center after the birth of her third child, when she found the baby food bags and
some other special things like toothbrushes weren't included in the town's weekly rubbish collection.
So she set up her own recycling center in her garden.
At first, Liz had only a couple of boxes. But now, her garden has more bins to help the locals

things can be recycled there. "The recycling center has hopefully helped the community recycle more
waste,"Liz said."It has helped my children feel the need to do recycling, too."
Every month, Liz sends most of her rubbish to TerraCycle, a company that processes the
rubbish and turns it into useful things like watering cans (洒水壶). The weight of Liz's recyclable
materials is changed into points for money. And the money will be paid out twice a year to
charities(慈善团体) chosen by her.

Most people have probably seen a movie about an AI tool or a robot that has become so smart
that it can take over the world. At present, there are no such AI tools or robots. But scientists have
been working to improve AI models. Some recent models can create realistic photos from a short
written description. Others can recreate anyone's voice based on (基于) a voice recording just a few
seconds long.
The AI tool that has got the most attention recently is ChatGPT, created by the company
OpenAI. When asked a question, ChatGPT answers quickly in perfect sentences. It makes up stories
and games, writes articles, programs computers, and much more. ChatGPT appears to be very
intelligent (智能的). But really, ChatGPT is simply guessing — based on its training information —
which word is most likely to come next, over and over again.
In March, OpenAI developed a more powerful model, called GPT-4. GPT-4 can create and
explain jokes, and pass tests that are difficult for humans. The rapid progress of recent AI models
worries some people. In late March, many computer experts wrote a letter calling for a six-month
pause(暂停) for any work on AI tools.
The letter says AI companies race to create "smart AI tools" that no one can “understand, predict,
or…control”. The group behind the letter wants governments to develop laws(法律)to make sure AI
tools are safe.
ChatGPT has caused so much excitement that many companies are likely to keep developing
smart AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warning that many people — including leaders — will
be thinking about carefully.
61.What can we know from the first paragraph:
A. AI models are becoming intelligent.
B. Scientists get new ideas from movies.
C. Things in movies will happen in the real world.
D. Robots will not take over the world in the future.
62.Which question is not answered in Paragraph 2:
A. Who created ChatGPT. B. What ChatGPT can do.
C. How ChatGPT works. D. How popular ChatGPT is.
63.What do the underlined words “more powerful”mean
A. Quieter. B. Stronger. C. More comfortable. D. More beautiful.
64.Why did many computer experts write the letter
A. They advised people to use ChatGPT properly.

D. They warned leaders that AI tools would become dangerous.
65.Which of the following is TRUE
A. Computer experts think ChatGPT is good enough.
B. GPT-4 can take the place of humans to do any work.
C. AI companies are competing to develop smart AI tools.

Spending time on social media (社交媒体) has become a way of life for many adults. But is it
healthy for your children to have the same habit 66
Dr. Eshleman studies children’s problems.“By using social media, all of us get too much
information. 67 That's why children should not be allowed to use social media,”Dr.
Eshleman says.
One study shows that social media users under 11 years old are more likely to have some
problems, like having online-only friends and taking part in online bullying(网络欺凌 ). 68
“If kids are kept being asked to stay away from social media and do their homework, then parents
may find they get angry easily,” says Dr. Eshleman.
Dr. Eshleman says if your children are often on social media or if they've been asking to join, it's
important to pay attention to the following things. First, make sure your children are ready. 69
You can find that out from how they communicate with others. If not, there are tests for them to take
on the Internet.
Second, talk to your children. From the beginning, it's necessary to tell your children what social
media is and what it can be used for. Ask why they're interested in it and what they want to use it for.
Third, limit screen time. 70 She points out that parents should also make sure their
children are getting enough physical activity and face-to-face communication.
A. Dr. Eshleman suggests limiting screen time to two hours a day for children.
B. And how do we keep them safe on social media
C. Some information really has a bad influence on children.
D. Even if your children are old enough, they may not be ready for it.
E. Using social media will also change children's personal characters.

How to improve myself
Everyone wants to get better and better, and so do I. In order to improve myself, I’ll do as follows.
Firstly, I’ll try to break my bad habits. For example, I am poor at managing my time. I’ll make a to-do list so that I can make full use of my time. Secondly, I’ll read widely to increase my knowledge in my spare time. I believe that the more I read, the wiser I will be. Thirdly, I’ll take up new hobbies like drawing and gardening. Last but not least, I’ll try to do something meaningful such as volunteering in old people’s homes and giving away books to people in need.
By doing these things, I’m sure that I can improve myself.2023-2024学年第一学期厦外海沧附校教育集团

Most people have probably seen a movie about an AI tool or a robot that has become so smart that it can take over the world. At present, there are no such AI tools or robots. But scientists have been working to improve AI models. Some recent models can create realistic photos from a short written description. Others can recreate anyone's voice based on (基于) a voice recording just a few seconds long.
The AI tool that has got the most attention recently is ChatGPT, created by the company OpenAI. When asked a question, ChatGPT answers quickly in perfect sentences. It makes up stories and games, writes articles, programs computers, and much more. ChatGPT appears to be very intelligent (智能的). But really, ChatGPT is simply guessing — based on its training information — which word is most likely to come next, over and over again.
In March, OpenAI developed a more powerful model, called GPT-4. GPT-4 can create and explain jokes, and pass tests that are difficult for humans. The rapid progress of recent AI models worries some people. In late March, many computer experts wrote a letter calling for a six-month pause(暂停) for any work on AI tools.
The letter says AI companies race to create "smart AI tools" that no one can “understand, predict, or…control”. The group behind the letter wants governments to develop laws(法律)to make sure AI tools are safe.
ChatGPT has caused so much excitement that many companies are likely to keep developing smart AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warning that many people — including leaders — will be thinking about carefully.
61.What can we know from the first paragraph:
A. AI models are becoming intelligent.
B. Scientists get new ideas from movies.
C. Things in movies will happen in the real world.
D. Robots will not take over the world in the future.
62.Which question is not answered in Paragraph 2:
A. Who created ChatGPT. B. What ChatGPT can do.
C. How ChatGPT works. D. How popular ChatGPT is.
63.What do the underlined words “more powerful”mean
A. Quieter. B. Stronger. C. More comfortable. D. More beautiful.
64.Why did many computer experts write the letter
A. They advised people to use ChatGPT properly.
B. They wanted to explain why GPT-4 was much safer.
C. They hoped AI companies could solve real-life problems.
D. They warned leaders that AI tools would become dangerous.
65.Which of the following is TRUE
A. Computer experts think ChatGPT is good enough.
B. GPT-4 can take the place of humans to do any work.
C. AI companies are competing to develop smart AI tools.
D. Scientists are working to create AI tools bigger than GPT-4.

Spending time on social media (社交媒体) has become a way of life for many adults. But is it healthy for your children to have the same habit 66
Dr. Eshleman studies children’s problems.“By using social media, all of us get too much information. 67 That's why children should not be allowed to use social media,”Dr. Eshleman says.
One study shows that social media users under 11 years old are more likely to have some problems, like having online-only friends and taking part in online bullying(网络欺凌). 68 “If kids are kept being asked to stay away from social media and do their homework, then parents may find they get angry easily,” says Dr. Eshleman.
Dr. Eshleman says if your children are often on social media or if they've been asking to join, it's important to pay attention to the following things. First, make sure your children are ready. 69 You can find that out from how they communicate with others. If not, there are tests for them to take on the Internet.
Second, talk to your children. From the beginning, it's necessary to tell your children what social media is and what it can be used for. Ask why they're interested in it and what they want to use it for.
Third, limit screen time. 70 She points out that parents should also make sure their children are getting enough physical activity and face-to-face communication.
A. Dr. Eshleman suggests limiting screen time to two hours a day for children. B. And how do we keep them safe on social media C. Some information really has a bad influence on children. D.
