My daughter is out of the ordinary. Three years ago, halfway through college, my 22-year-old daughter dropped out and became a farmer in Vermont. Next stop was California, where she raised goats. Now she is in Costa Rica, where she manages a wellness retreat center. But I’ve learned to let go and accepted that her choices are not mine.
As I saw how my daughter had chosen to live her life, I thought hard about my own, especially the part about jumping off the set path. Over time my job had become less fulfilling. When interviewed about their own limitations, this language model replied: one Limitation of large language models is that we are not capable of understanding the context or meaning of the words we generate. Coffee is a source of inflammation-fighting anti-oxidants (抗氧化剂). Now a new study suggests that adding a dash of milk that contains protein can boost the health benefits of your cup of coffee.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark examined how anti-oxidants called polyphenols (多酚) interacted with amino acids (氨基酸), the building blocks of proteins, and found that combining them has twice the effect on fighting cellular inflammation (细胞炎症) as polyphenols alone.
Past studies suggest some polyphenols can prevent and slow the oxidation of healthy chemicals and protect our bodies from disease. They are thought to do this in part by controlling inflammation, a complex immune response involving macrophages that release several inflammatory mediators.
In order to confirm the result, the researchers successfully showed in another new study that combining polyphenols with proteins in milky coffee can form adducts (加合物). And they also used RNA-sequencing to study the immune-regulating effects. As they expected, the polyphenols alone did prevent inflammatory responses. But when they were combined with amino acid found in milk proteins, their anti-inflammatory effects received a boost.
“It is interesting to have now observed the anti-inflammatory effect in cell experiments. So, the next step will be to study the effects in animals,” says immunologist and senior author. Andrew Williams. Further research is needed to figure out why and what these results mean practically for human health. This study only examined how a single type of immune mediator (免疫介质) reacts to coffee-like chemicals in a laboratory setting.
“Our results can be used as an important reference in applications of future functional food or medicinal products that aim to modulate metabolic, neurological, or immune-related diseases,” the researchers conclude in their paper.

Becoming a Real Runner
I would never use the word “athletic” to describe myself. To me, athletes are people who really enjoy working out. I remember crying in middle school when I had to run a mile during a gym class. In June 2017, my friend sent mean email that would forever change my attitude towards running. He was training for a 200-mile relay and wanted me to be on his team. The first run was hard. I purposefully avoided Central Park in order to stay away from “real runners”. After a few blocks, I was already breathless, and walked the rest of the way home. I called my mom; choking up and saying I had no hope of running this relay at all. But she encouraged me to keep at it, so I didn’t quit. My running went from four miles a week to eight within one month before my advanced training began.
I was fightened to go into the first training session with the team as everyone else was super “athletic”. We ran for five miles, and I was significantly slower. However, my teammates were so supportive that I felt the runner’s excitement, which I had never believed true.
One day, about two weeks after the first training, my ankle gave out while I was running in Central Park. I was diagnosed with a stress fracture (应力性骨折) in my left leg. The doctor put a cast (石膏) on my left leg and told me to stop running for two months. It took me awhile to face the fact that I was out of the race. My daughter is out of the ordinary. Three years ago, halfway through college, my 22-year-old daughter dropped out and became a farmer in Vermont. Next stop was California, where she raised goats. Now she is in Costa Rica, where she manages a wellness retreat center. But I’ve learned to let go and accepted that her choices are not mine.
As I saw how my daughter had chosen to live her life, I thought hard about my own, especially the part about jumping off the set path. Over time my job had become less fulfilling. As I looked at what I wanted to accomplish in the last years of my working life, this wasn’t it. So I prepared carefully and left my job.
To celebrate my new freedom, my daughter and I had decided to meet in Arizona the week after my job ended. We went to the Shaman’s Cave. At the top of it, the road became narrow. Coffee is a source of inflammation-fighting anti-oxidants (抗氧化剂) Now a new study suggests that adding a dash of milk that contains protein can boost the health benefits of your cup of coffee.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark examined how anti-oxidants called polyphenols (多酚) interacted with amino acids (氨基酸), the building blocks of proteins, and found that combining them has twice the effect on fighting cellular inflammation (细胞炎症) as polyphenols alone.
Past studies suggest some polyphenols can prevent and slow the oxidation of healthy chemicals and protect our bodies from disease. They are thought to do this in part by controlling inflammation, a complex immune response involving macrophages that release several inflammatory mediators.
In order to confirm the result, the researchers successfully showed in another new study that combining polyphenols with proteins in milky coffee can form adducts (加合物). And they also used RNA-sequencing to study the immune-regulating effects. As they expected, the polyphenols alone did prevent inflammatory responses. But when they were combined with amino acid found in milk proteins, their anti-inflammatory effects received a boost.
“It is interesting to have now observed the anti-inflammatory effect in cell experiments. So, the next step will be to study the effects in animals,” says immunologist and senior author. Andrew Williams. Further research is needed to figure out why and what these results mean practically for human health. This study only examined how a single type of immune mediator (免疫介质) reacts to coffee-like chemicals in a laboratory setting.

Becoming a Real Runner
I would never use the word “athletic” to describe myself. To me, athletes are people who really enjoy working out. I remember crying in middle school when I had to run a mile during a gym class. I called my mom; choking up and saying I had no hope of running this relay at all. But she encouraged me to keep at it, so I didn’t quit. My running went from four miles a week to eight within one month before my advanced training began.
I was fightened to go into the first training session with the team as everyone else was super “athletic”. We ran for five miles, and I was significantly slower. However, my teammates were so supportive that I felt the runner’s excitement, which I had never believed true.
One day, about two weeks after the first training, my ankle gave out while I was running in Central Park. I was diagnosed with a stress fracture (应力性骨折) in my left leg. The doctor put a cast (石膏) on my left leg and told me to stop running for two months. It took me awhile to face the fact that I was out of the race.
