Previously, being a Henrico's Deep Run High School student, Beale took part in the competitions of cheerleading and hockey. Afterwards, she had to relearn how to perform daily tasks. “When I was in the hospital, doctors told my parents I'd be a vegetable, not being able to breathe or swallow. I wanted to disprove everything they had on their list,” she said. “It old my parents, ‘I'm going to work and do more’.”
Her parents discovered a hospital in California for people struggling with spinal cord injuries and flew Beale there to spend four hours a day for more than a month re learning tasks and strengthening her muscles. She traveled to California nine times for this.
To process her thoughts. Beale began writing about her experiences. By the time she finished. She’d written 32 stories. She then gathered them into her first nonfiction book. Greater Things, which was about how people react to her and how she has overcome her injuries. “In ever thought it'd become a book, but that's how it all started,” Beale said.
Now in 2023 working for her publisher, Morgan James Publishing in Hampton, Beale continues to write. Another nonfiction book, A Million Suns, details her journey “from the darkness of disability into the sunlight of circumstance” and how she has found happiness. In her new fiction offering, Wide Auwake, she assigns names and personalities to 12 objects belonging to a young girl, Madison.
Additionally, Beale has created the first episode(集) of a YouTube show based on her book Date Me, medaled as a wheelchair fencer and finished 16 marathons with a wheelchair since 2011. “I've worked hard to get to where I am,” she said.

Maybe you're someone who runs 20 to 30 miles a week but regularly gets fast food for dinner. The idea of eating anything you want without consequences might sound like a good dream. But the reality is that exercise can not completely change the effects of a bad diet, experts say.
“Skinny fat” is the unofficial term used to describe a person who looks slim but has a high percentage of body fat. A regular gym goer could have little subcutaneous fat—the fat right under your skin—but lots of visceral(内脏) fat. A buildup of visceral fat from eating processed food high in sugar and salt could lead to the same type of risks as an overweight person, according to Dr. Colin Carriker, an exercise physiologist from High Point University in North Carolina.
If you want to lose weight, the key is to develop a caloric deficit in which you burn calories more than what you're consuming. But eating high-calorie fatty food regularly can make this a hard nut. “You are over consuming calories and will have to do more exercise than a person can sustain on a long-term basis,” Carriker said.
One idea would be to spend more time exercising or joining in a more intense work out. But this plan doesn't really work, said Grace Derocha, a registered dietitian, because processed food like soda and candy have few nutrients, and with a lack of vitamins, protein(蛋白质) and fiber to fill you up, it'll be hard to think about working out when you're constantly feeling hungry.
Of course, being healthy doesn't mean you have to give up all the food you enjoy eating. Instead of feeling guilty for ordering dessert, Derocha says you can think of food as more than just calories but as the kind of energy it can provide. If you've had enough fiber today, look at where you add in extra protein. “It's not good or bad food; it's just fuel,” she said. “When you look at it from an addition standpoint instead of a restriction standpoint, it's a healthier approach to fueling yourself.”
28. What does Dr. Colin Carriker most probably agree with
A. Gym goers like processed food best.
B. Visceral fat causes less harm to people.
C. People can look thin but still be unhealthy.
D. People exercising regularly are actually fit.
29. Which is closest in meaning to “hard nut” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Disorder. B. Target. C. Trend D. Challenge.
30. What might happen to people who often eat processed food
A. They have little motivation or drive to exercise.
B. They are enthusiastic about intense workouts.
C. They obtain much more energy to burn calories.
D. They work productively due to being energetic.
31. What does Derocha probably suggest
A. Staying away from junk food. B. Changing your views about food.
C. Being active to keep energetic. D. Fueling yourself with strict diets.
D
Sohabati Devi grows rice and vegetables in the village of Dodhghat in Uttar Pradesh, India. One night, floods drowned her fields. Thankfully, shed planted a special type of rice, Scientists had improved its DNA to contain a specific bit of genetic(基因的) material called SUB1A, which helps rice plants survive being completely drowned for two weeks. Indeed, after the flood went away, roughly half of Devi's rice crop was still alive. Now some scientists don't just want to help crops survive climate change. They're looking to develop crops that actively fight climate change.
During photosynthesis(光合作用), plants turn CO2 from the air into the carbon-rich sugar and oxygen they need. Plants also send carbon into the soil through their roots. However, plants “can't use all the sunlight when full sun is shining on the leaves,” notes Krishna Niyogi, a biologist at UC Berkeley. Actually, too much sunlight can damage plant cells. To guard against this, plants have something like a safety valve(阀). If it could react to changing light faster, plants could get more sun energy, Niyogi says.
Three proteins control the opening and closing of those safety valves. To increase the levels of these proteins, Niyogi's team added three genes into tobacco plants. The result was that plants grew 14-20% larger than usual. This is important as larger plants store more carbon.
Encouraging photosynthesis to pull more CO2 from the air is a great start toward helping farms fight climate change, but this removal is short-term. When a plant dies, microbes in the soil eat it. Those microbes then put off CO2 and other greenhouse gases, which return to the air. The deeper plant roots grow into the soil, though, the longer it takes that carbon to make it swayback out again. “The roots are the vehicle to actually store the carbon and take it out of the atmosphere,” says Wolfgang Busch, a biologist at the Salk Institute in San Diego, California.
From root surveys and other studies, Busch has identified around 50 genes that help plants grow deeper, bigger roots.
32. What helped Devi's crops survive the flood
A. The enough sunlight. B. The crops' big roots.
C. A certain gene. D. Scientists' immediate help.
33. Why did Niyogi’s team try to increase the levels of the three proteins
A. To offer leaves' safety valves more protection.
B. To quicken a plant's response to changing light.
C. To make it easier to add the genes into the plants.
D. To develop a certain plant with healthier leaves.
34. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph
A. It is hard for roots to take carbon out of the atmosphere.
B. Removing carbon through photosynthesis is an easy process.
C. The soil underground plays a crucial role in absorbing carbon.
D. Plants with deeper roots can be better for long-term carbon storage.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Crops Are Being Engineered to Handle Changing Climate
B. Plants Have Many Ways to Absorb Carbon From the Air
C. Crops Work Very Effectively in Fighting Climate Change
D. Plants Are Proved to Be Great Carbon-absorbing Heroes

(Text 2)
W:All the time I was at school I wanted to be a nurse, but my mother worked in a shop and said “it wasn't good to be on your feet all day”.

(Text 3)
W:Excuse me, Mr. Smith.
M:What's the matter I don't want to be disturbed while I'm talking to Mr. Black.
W:But you have a meeting scheduled with the engineer.
M:Call him please, and put of four meeting.
(Text 4)
M:Isn't this your usual stop
W:Yes, but today I'm going to the library.
M:Oh, then you should get off at the next stop and walk to Clifton Street.
(Text 5)
W:You must be crazy to be jumping out of the plane at your age.
M:Everyone said so. I was very excited at first. I thought it would really feel like flying. In the end, it was actually a bit disappointing.
(Text 6)
W:I wonder why The Sunflower went out of business. It got a great review in Dining Magazine and every time I ate there, there was a big crowd.
M:It's not closed forever. There was a fire in the kitchen last month, but they plan to reopen as soon as the damage is repaired.
W:I'm glad to hear that. It was one of the best spots in town. It was so clean; the workers were so friendly, and the food was great!
(Text 7)
W:There are many candidates for this promotion. In my opinion, Mr. Bannister has proven himself to the company, but he doesn't have much experience.
M:I agree with you, Amelia, but we shouldn't overlook Mrs. Templeton. She really helped us a lot with the trade deal last year.
W:I didn't think about that. You're right. We should go with her, as she's been with us longer.
M:Let's inform Mr. Duncan that we've reached a decision.
(Text 8)
W:At lunchtime, I watched that good cooking show, Chef's Special, and I've got some great ideas for some meals we can try out for dinner.
M:Well, that sounds good. So what's on your list
W:Let's see. We've got some meat at home already, but we need something for a salad. We need some tomatoes, carrots and green onions.

W:Yes, although we're growing in numbers. When I was 13, my dad bought my brother a mountain bike but I was given an ordinary one. I really wanted to join my brother, so in the end my uncle got one for me.
M:And now you're a winner
W:Yes. I just won the Regional Championship. It was a difficult course with lots of rocks. At one point I thought I wasn't going to win. I was ahead and then I had to slow down because a photographer jumped out from behind a tree.
M:What do you think is the most important before a race
W:Well, there's much to do. Take plenty of exercise to keep fit. Check the route in advance. And the most important I think is that you must make sure everything's working on the bike. If there's anything wrong with the bike, I'll be in trouble. And the clothes shouldn't slow you down so they need to be tight. They might feel a bit uncomfortable when you first put them on, but you will soon get used to it. I’m not bothered about not looking pretty—I just want to win.
(Text 10)
W:Hello, this is Greenhill Studies College. I'm leaving this message in answer to your questions about the Business Studies course. Firstly, you asked when the course starts. It begins on the 12th of June, and finishes on the 11th of July. At the beginning of the course, there are no lectures because we spend time watching business videos. So you won't need to bring anything for the class, as everything is provided. Don't forget, however, that although you can bring your own notebook computer if you wish, mobile phones are not allowed in the classroom. I'm afraid these can disturb the classes. You said you're coming by car. Well, as it's only a short course, you can use the visitor's car park which is just beside the main entrance. We're only a short walk away. Just turn right after the Science Center, cross the staff car park, and you'll see the door to the Business Studies Department in front of you. Finally, you also wanted to know if it's possible to attend a language course while you are here. Well, the answer is yes, but we only have room on our Italian classes. Oh, no, actually...there's one place on the Spanish course, too. We usually offer French, Chinese, German and Japanese as well, but there aren't enough students for those classes this summer. If you want to apply for the course, please signup before the 5th of June. Thank you.
