Good morning, dear judges. It’s my great honor to be here to present my teaching design. The teaching topic is Unit 3. My teaching design will be presented into the following 6 parts.
Part 1 The analysis of teaching material and students
Part 2 The analysis of teaching objectives
Part 3 The analysis of key and difficult points
Part 4 The analysis of teaching and learning methods
Part 5 The analysis of teaching procedure
Part 6 Blackboard design
Well, firstly, let’s focus on the first part, the analysis of teaching material and students.
This is a reading lesson. The reading passage is from Book 1, Unit 3. The topic of this unit is Sports and Fitness, which belongs to the theme context “human and society”. The passage introduces 2 living legends, Lang Ping and Michael Jordan and their great achievements and great qualities. The author conveys us that it is not only great achievements but also great qualities that make a person a living legend. And we shoild learn from their great qualities.
The students for this lesson are lovely, creative and active. They are eager to learn something new and they are very interested in this topic. In the first lesson, they learned the new words and expressions of this unit. However, they maybe don’t have a clear understanding of the definition of living legends and the rhetorical devices mentioned in the passage.
Part 2 The analysis of teaching objectives
In order to promote the development of every student, the teaching objectives can be listed into the following 4 aspects. First, language ability, their reading ability will be enhanced through task-based reading activities and their speaking ability will be improved by encouraging them to express themselves bravely in English. Second, cultural awareness, they will learn more about living legends and learn from their great qualities. Third, thinking capacity, their critical and creative thinking ability will be enhanced through prediction and discussion and so on. Last, learning ability, students will master the strategy of using the context to get the meaning of new words and expressions and summarize the main idea.
Part 3 The analysis of key and difficult points
So based on the teaching objectives, the key and difficult point of this lesson is to guide students to learn from these 2 living legends to face difficulties bravely.
Part 4 The analysis of teaching and learning methods
To achieve the teaching objectives, there are three teaching methods used in this lesson. They are situational teaching method, task-based language teaching method and communicative teaching method. As for the learning method, students will be encouraged to adopt cooperative learning method to enhance their cooperative awareness.
Part 5 The analysis of teaching procedure
Here comes to the most important part of my presentation, the analysis of teaching procedure. The procedure can be divided into the following 6 steps.
Step 1 Lead-in
To begin with, I will play a video about Gueileen in Winter Olympic Games and tell them she is a living legend. Students maybe curious about the reason why she is a living legend. And students are asked to find out the definition of living legends. They should satisfy 2 requirements: One is that they should be masters in their field. Another is that they should set good examples for others. Then, lead the new lesson.
In this way, it can arouse students’ interest and stimulate their background information.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Before reading the passage, ask students to predict the content of the passage based on the title and pictures, which can help students predict the text quickly and make a prediction for their later reading activities.
Step 3 While-reading
There are three reading activities in this part.
First, I will emphasize a reading skill----skimming and ask students to read the passage quickly to check their prediction. During the process, I will guide students to underline key words and key sentences of each paragraph.
Students may identify that the passage consists of 2 parts. The lead paragraph gives readers a context: to help the magazine choose some living legends of sports. The body part includes 2 courses, which introduce 2 famous living legends respectively, Lang Ping and Michael Jordan.
The purpose of this activity is to grasp the main idea of the text and sort out the structure of the passage.
Second, students are required to read the passage carefully to sort out the specific information guided by the question chains: why can Lang Ping and Michael Jordan be masters What examples did they set for others During the process, students may find that as a player, Lang Ping won many honors. As a coach,... She is determined and has teamwork spirit. Michael Jordan has impressive skills and he is generous. So they could be masters.
This is to help students have a clear understanding of great achievements and great qualities of 2 living legends.
Third, read the passage again to find our the figure of speech used in it.
Students may identify that the first discourse used parallelism and examples to describe LP’s great achievements. Besides, discourse 2 adopts metaphor, direct speech and quotation to illustrate MJ’s sports skills.
The purpose of this activity is to master the new figure of speech.
Step 4 Post-reading
Divide students into several groups to a living legend in their eyes. After discussion, 3 representatives will be encouraged to share their ideas with the class.
By doing this, students can not only cultivate their teamwork spirit, critical thinking ability, but also develop their speaking ability.
Step 5 Summary
One of the students will be encouraged to summarize what we have learned this lesson and others make a supplyment. I will emphasize that we should learn from them to face difficulties bravely.
Step 6 Homework
Considering different levels among students, students of level A are required to write an article about a living legend in their eyes. Students of level B need to write a summary of this passage.
This two steps are to consolidate what they have learned, improve their writing skills and arouse every student’s interest in English.
