Here’swhat Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any第 4页,共 12页worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise.” Charles Dickens:“If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die.”Researchers have found quite a lot of connections between walking andproducing ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percentmore creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walkingoutside —compared with on a treadmill(跑步机)—produces the most novel andhighest-quality ideas. The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. Our creative thinking istriggered by physical movement, which is exactly why walking —with your dog, afriend, or alone —feeds creative thinking. The scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Breaking your routine with awalk can be a catalyst for fresh understanding of problems or projects. Just by goingoutside, you are stepping out of your familiar surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walkthrough a tree-filled neighborhood. You can walk through a park and observe peoplejoking or birds singing. Being inside, you're more likely to be lifeless, which meansyou don’t have enough energy to wonder or create things. So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts withwalking Involve yourself more closely in your surroundings. Turn off your phoneand give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations andnatural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in apuddle.24. Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days, I felt at a lossand out of place. Until I made a discovery.Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of Britishskateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing. Iloved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. Andmy favorite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don’t worry about it.Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam, I fell onto the stones, damaging a nervein my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting: “Safe! Safe!Safe!” And that’s what mattered —landing tricks, being a good skater. When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, butthe locals were far less welcoming. Within a couple of years, I’d given it up.When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down toSouthbank, spending hours there. I’ve traveled back several times since, most recentlythis past spring. The day was cold but clear; tourists and Londoners stopped to watchthe skaters. Weaving among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my wayto the beam. Then a rail-thin teenager, in a baggy white T-shirt, skidded(滑) up to thebeam. He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him. But soon Icaught a few of his glances. “I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head. “Safe, man. Safe.”“Yeah,” I said. “Safe.”28. What can we learn about the author soon after he moved to London A. He felt disappointed. B. He gave up his hobby.C. He liked the weather there. D. For decades, researchers have observed orcas (虎鲸 ) attacking andeven killing porpoises (鼠海豚) in the Pacific Northwest. But it confuses people thatthese expert hunters don’t eat them. So what’s going on here Southern Resident orcas are a different population of orcas that live in the PacificNorthwest. The lives of these orcas are closely tied to those of the salmon. So if thesalmon disappear, so too will the orca. But despite their preference for the salmon, these whales are known to attack and kill other smaller marine mammals (海洋哺乳动物) without eating them.To better understand this unusual behavior, an international team of researchersdid a research and examined more than 60 years of recorded interactions betweenSouthern Resident orcas and porpoises in the Salish Sea.“Why don’t the Southern Residents just eat porpoises instead ” Deborah Giles ofWild Orca said. “It’s because fish-eating killer whales have a completely differentecology and culture from orcas that eat marine mammals. So we must conclude thattheir interactions with porpoises serve a different purpose, but this purpose has onlybeen a guess until now.”According to Giles and her colleagues’ work, the orca may be attacking theporpoise as a form of social play. It is possible these large animals may be attackingthe smaller mammals as a way to build up social cohesion (凝聚力 ). Similarly, thebehavior could represent hunting practice, by which the orcas are practising theirteamwork and cooperation skills for hunting salmons. Finally, the behavior could be away of “mismothering” where the orca see the smaller porpoises as weaker or ill andso in need of care. This work highlights the need for the protection of salmon populations in the areaas well as the orcas’ entire hunting range. The threat to the salmon’s future is not justa threat to a single species, but an entire ecosystem.32. Why did an international team of researchers do their study 第 7页,共 12页A. To find out a way to protect porpoises.B. To make sure the reason why some orcas attack salmon.C. To solve the problem of marine mammals’ living environment.D. According to Giles’ research, which may be a reason for the orcas’ attackingporpoises A. It’s a kind of social play with porpoises.B. It is a practice to kill porpoises as their food.C. The orcas may dislike the smaller porpoises.D. It’s a way for the orcas to practice their hunting skills.35. What probably is the writer’s attitude to the research A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. I’d like to welcome you aboard our train trip through high desert scenery. Our trip today lasts one and a half hours and the train climbs uphill for the first forty-five minutes and then makes its way down to a town called Oldsville. In the twentieth century, oil was discovered here and an important industry developed. It didn’t last long, however, and tourism is the biggest industry these days. There’s a lot to see in the town. On the journey you won’t see any animals during the daytime because it’s too hot, but you should look out for beautiful desert plants right next to the track, although at this height there are no trees. At one point, we go over an old wooden bridge. People get worried because it’s noisy, but it’s quite safe. There’s no river under the bridge, but you can see some large colorful rocks —they’re fantastic. We don’t make any stops on the trip because all the stations were closed long ago. At the far end of our train there’s a small store selling souvenirs that you can’t buy anywhere else. The other things which we sell during your ride are drinks. Unfortunately, the machine selling these is broken, so once we’re underway I’ll be walking down the train with everything in a basket. So stop me if you want anything. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源列表 从1‘20’‘开始播放录音2023.11高一期中英语听力.mp3 高一英语期中试卷23.11.pdf 高一英语期中试卷答案23.11.docx
