Last summer, I was sent to take photos that could communicate the urgency of climate change in northern Canada. When I arrived at an abandoned village on Resolute Bay, I scanned the shore with my camera. Suddenly, I spotted a bear lying on the ground. It didn’t move for almost an hour. But when it finally stood up, I had to catch my breath. The bear’s once strong body was just skin and bones, every step that it took was painfully slow.
When I posted the photos on social media, I wrote, “This is what starvation may look like. I wonder whether the global population of 25, 000 polar bears would die the way this bear is dying.”
I did not say that this particular bear was killed by climate change. But news organizations around the world focused on it. The first line of the story published in National Geographic read, “This is what climate change looks like”—with “climate change” highlighted in yellow. Other news agencies even adopted more dramatic headlines.
It was estimated that my photos had been read by about 2.5 billion people around the world. But there was a problem: Most people and the news agencies didn’t recognize or misunderstood the real message I tried to send with them. Many people expressed gratitude that I’d provided shocking evidence on climate change, while others who are still trying to deny the existence of climate change charged me with spreading false information.
Perhaps I had made a mistake in not telling the full story—that I was looking for pictures that might foretell the future and that I didn't know what had happened to this particular polar bear.
I can’t say that this bear was starving because of climate change, but I am happy that my photos have moved the conversation about climate change to the forefront, where it must remain until this problem is solved.
Until then, when I come across a scene like this one, I will again share with the world—and take pains to be sure that my intention is clear.

So most people tend to choose low prices over sustainability, particularly when they’re not directly dealing with the impacts of clothing pollution. Of course, the best way is not to buy any new clothes.However,saving up to buy higher quality,more sustainable garments(衣服)and then wearing them for many years are healthier for the environment. Maintenance work at many deep-water wells and pipeline systems is already carried out by unmanned vehicles. But these vehicles typically need to be transported to the offshore site on a fully crewed ship and then remotely operated from onboard the surface ship. That can cost up to $100,000 per day,according to Pal Liljeb ck, chief technology officer with Eelume Subsea Intervention, which developed the robot. Liljeb ck says that by “enabling the robot to become a subsea resident living at a station, it can be mobilized at any time to do inspections, thereby reducing the need for costly surface ships”.
Eelume can work autonomously on tasks assigned from a control room onshore, and send back the video and data. In my memory, my mother was a small delicate woman, who even in high-heeled shoes was barely one and a half meters tall. Her hair was fine and black and always put up in a knot. She would always be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me when I raced breathlessly home for lunch after a ten-minute walk from the primary school.
One day I was picked out to perform Alice of the play Alice in Wonderland, and ford weeks my mother had rehearsed(排练)my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, every time I stepped on stage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally my teacher took me aside and explained that she had written a narrator(旁白)part for the play, and asked me to change roles. How upset and embarrassed I was!
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow daisies(雏菊)in the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with dots of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one daisy. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds, ”she said, pulling up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like daisies,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful—even daisies.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it ” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be the rose, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled encouragingly.
