I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, US, raised by a single mother who didn’t finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps (券) and attended what the media called “the most dysfunctional (功能失调的) public school district”. Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect
On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about. Even if my electricity was cut off, I still woke up at 5: 30, because I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me.
Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths wouldn’t have had me closer to my goal. Being poor could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to cold email about 50 Harvard students so I could ask for feedback on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when180 others had already turned me down.
Every day, I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!” A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land.

Wearing heavy cotton clothing, head protection and a device to help her breathe, Jessica Ball recently spent the night observing lava (岩浆) coming out of Hawaii’s Kilauca Volcano.
Ball is a researcher from the United States Geological Survey, the agency which studies the country’s land and natural resources. She was at “fissure 8”, one of at least 22 holes that have opened around the Kilauea Volcano in the past two months.
Rock from deep inside the volcano is so hot that it has become a liquid. The liquid, known as lava, began flowing from the openings in early May. At “fissure 8”, the lava shot up as high as 45 meters in the air before slowly heading for the Pacific Ocean a few kilometers away.
Scientists have been in the area of the volcanic activity measuring the eruptions 24 hours a day, seven days a week since Kilauea first erupted. The severe heat will melt (融化) any non-natural clothing materials, so the team members can only wear heavy cotton. Gloves protect their hands from sharp volcanic rock and glass. Head coverings protect against falling lava stones, and breathing devices protect against gases coming from the openings.
Kilauea has been erupting almost without stopping since 1983. It is one of the world’s most closely observed volcanoes. Most of these observations took place at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on Kilauea’s highest point, from which researchers have now had to escape. But the latest eruption is the biggest and could provide scientists with a lot of new information.
Ball says they want to learn what warning signs may exist for future eruptions to better protect Hawaii’s communities.
Hundreds of small earthquakes caused by the eruptions have damaged the structure of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. So scientists pulled equipment and records out of the building and moved them to the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
8. Why do scientists wear heavy cotton clothes while observing the volcano
A. They can bear severe heat. B. They are natural and healthy.
C. They are comfortable to wear. D. They can stop poisonous gases.
9. What is special about the latest eruption
A. It lasts long. B. It has wide influence.
C It is closely observed. D. It offers much information.
10. What is Ball’s purpose in gathering useful information
A To prevent eruptions. B. To predict eruptions.
C. To find the cause of eruptions. D. To measure the power of eruptions.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Hawaii Volcano Has Been Erupting B. The Greatest Eruption Appears in Hawaii
C. Scientists Risk Heat and Gas to Study a Volcano D. A rare Chance to Observe Volcano
D
We’re all familiar (熟悉的) with songs getting stuck in our head (挥之不去) while we’re awake, but it turns out this can happen during sleep as well. A new study shows that earworms getting into our brains at night could cause problems in getting to sleep and staying asleep.
Neuroscientist Michael Scullin from Baylor University and his coworkers used surveys of 199 people, as well as a sleep lab test involving 50 volunteers, to measure the influence of listening to music before bedtime on sleep.
In the survey part of the study, those who regularly listened to music during the day were more likely to report lasting nighttime earworms, which then had a negative effect on sleep quality through the night. For the lab test, individuals were played instrumental or standard versions (版本) of Shake It Off by Taylor Swift, Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen, and Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey. Tests were used to measure their sleep quality.
Earworms were reported throughout the night by the people surveyed, with those taking longer to fall asleep, spending more time in the light stages of sleep, and waking up more times during the night. Surprisingly, the instrumental versions of the songs caused about twice as many earworms and more sleep problems than the standard ones.
Past studies have connected late-night music listening with better sleep in those with insomnia, perhaps because it can relax the body. The researchers behind the new study suggest that actually it might be worse for our sleep - even after the tunes (歌曲) stop, our brains continue to process them for several hours.
Scullin suggests avoiding listening to music right before bed to limit the chance of catching earworms. Doing some other cognitive (认知) activity before sleeping, like making a list of jobs for the next day, might also help clear the mind, Scullin says.
12. Which description best explains earworms
A. Worms entering one’s ears. B. Worms stuck in one’s brain.
C. Problems caused by sleeplessness. D. Tunes repeating in one’s mind.
13. What do we know from the survey part of the study
A. Different music has the same effect on sleep at night.
B. Our brain stops processing music when we are asleep.
C. Daytime music listening has a negative effect on sleep.
D. Late-night music listening contributes to sleep at night.
14. What does the underlined word “insomnia” mean in paragraph 5
A. Unfamiliarity. B. Annoyance.
C. Confusion. D. Sleeplessness.
15. How can people improve their sleep quality according to Michael Scullin
A. By working out a schedule for tomorrow. B. By doing exercise to relax the body.
C. By listening to music right before bed. D. By doing nothing to clear the mind.

My family moved from Taiwan to a smalltown in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends. Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toys in one’s stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day.
Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I couldn’t help giggling (咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep.
And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to holdback my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.
Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn’t know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes.
How could I know that Santa was just late Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door.
(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
(2)如下格式作答。
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well-packed box.

I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, US, raised by a single mother who didn’t finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps (券) and attended what the media called “the most dysfunctional (功能失调的) public school district”. Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect
On my 13th birthday I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room.
Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow

C. It is closely observed. D. It offers much information.
10. What is Ball’s purpose in gathering useful information
A. To prevent eruptions. B. To predict eruptions.
C. To find the cause of eruptions. D. To measure the power of eruptions.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Hawaii Volcano Has Been Erupting B. The Greatest Eruption Appears in Hawaii
C. Scientists Risk Heat and Gas to Study a Volcano D. A rare Chance to Observe Volcano
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. C

Doing some other cognitive (认知的) activity before sleeping, like making a list of jobs for the next day, might also help clear the mind, Scullin says.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A

第二节 (满分20 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
(2)如下格式作答。

Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting on the card.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well-packed box. Wearing a radiant smile, the man reached out his hands, passed the box to me and grinned “Christmas gift for you”. Shocked at the unexpected guest and gift, I was at a loss what to say. The moment he blended into the darkness, I untied the ribbon with heart thumping wildly. Inside the box lay a teddy bear I had longed for with an attached card. Once again, I couldn’t contain my tears.
Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting on the card. It was a friend of mine and I later discovered that the man was her father. She was one of the audience of my sad story. The card read: “Sorry, I’m late. Merry Christmas.” I wiped away tears, held the box tightly and felt a surge of warmth. Christmas memories of this year wouldn’t be a bitter joke. Instead, it was a miracle which witnessed a healed heart. So now I believe Santa is real. This Santa doesn’t come down our chimneys, but lives inside good and thoughtful people who really listen to friends, and then plan deliberate acts of kindness.
