Every summer on July 19, my dad takes out old books and pictures and sits at
the dining room table. It’s always a day of memories for him. This is because on
July 19, 1969, humans first landed on the moon. As an American, he feels proud.
“We have left the Earth and stepped on another space body, and the Mars is the
next.” Dad thought. Though Dad felt that the Apollo tasks were the best, the years
that followed were disappointing for him because he always felt we should have
gone to the Mars(火星) first.
He always tried to get my older brothers to be crazy about science because they
were good at science. But they decided to open their own business. He couldn’t
believe his ears when I, his only daughter, was the only one who really loved
science.
I love the space program. I know all the astronauts’(宇航员) names from Yuri
Gagarin to the recent astronauts’. So every July 19, Dad and I sit down and look
through his old magazine pictures about the moon landing, way back in 1969.
They have encouraged me so much that I’ve become very interested in aerospace
engineering (航空航天工程). I hope to go to university to study it one day .
Aerospace engineering is one of the hardest subjects, and there are not many
girls in the program. Hopefully, I can encourage some young girls to get into it just
like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first humans on the moon encouraged
me .

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree
Animals can’t talk, but can they lie with their bodies and behavior Animal experts
may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool
other animals. Dishonesty often helps them manage to live in nature.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other
animals. A bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be
hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its
nest, the plover pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows
the“hurt”adult, leaving the baby birds safe.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries (埋 ) its food so it
always has something to eat. Scrub jays also steal food. They watch
where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem
to know when others are watching them. So they get back later,
unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give
its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the
chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee
take the winner’s hand and start fighting again. When chimpanzees
find food, they will cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running.
But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they
find food. That way, other chimpanzees don’t hear them, and they
don’t need to share the food.

When astronauts in Shenzhou XVII are flying high to study space, scientists are
digging deep to study the center of Earth!
Earlier in May, China started drilling (钻 ) its first over
10,000-meter-deep borehole (钻井) in Xinjiang. By Oct 1, the
hole was already 7,856 meters deep, reported Xinjiang Daily .
The borehole has a planned depth of 11,100 meters. It
will take 457 days to dig, said Bloomberg News. When it’s
finished, it will become the deepest hole in China and one of

The drill will go through more than ten layers of rock. The oldest layer is about
145 million years old. The Earth has lots of heat inside. So as the drill goes deeper, it
faces higher and higher temperatures. The metal drill could get so hot that it would
become as soft as noodles. The company doing the project, China National
Petroleum Corp, tried to cool the rocks down but failed. Finally, they dealt with this
problem by using high-tech tools.
According to Xinhua News, while testing drilling technologies, the hole will
also give us useful information about Earth’s energy resources. The hole is being
dug in an area rich in oil. The oil could be used to heat buildings and make fuel for
cars and planes. It also helps scientists study the risks of disasters, such as
earthquakes.

Every summer on July 19, my dad takes out old books and pictures and sits at the dining room table. It’s always a day of memories for him. This is because on July 19, 1969, humans first landed on the moon. As an American, he feels proud.
“We have left the Earth and stepped on another space body, and the Mars is the next.” Dad thought. Though Dad felt that the Apollo tasks were the best, the years that followed were disappointing for him because he always felt we should have gone to the Mars(火星) first.
He always tried to get my older brothers to be crazy about science because they were good at science. But they decided to open their own business. He couldn’t believe his ears when I, his only daughter, was the only one who really loved science.
I love the space program. I know all the astronauts’(宇航员) names from Yuri Gagarin to the recent astronauts’. So every July 19, Dad and I sit down and look through his old magazine pictures about the moon landing, way back in 1969. They have encouraged me so much that I’ve become very interested in aerospace engineering (航空航天工程). I hope to go to university to study it one day .
Aerospace engineering is one of the hardest subjects, and there are not many girls in the program. Hopefully, I can encourage some young girls to get into it just like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first humans on the moon encouraged me .

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree Animals can’t talk, but can they lie with their bodies and behavior Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Dishonesty often helps them manage to live in nature.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. A bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the“hurt”adult, leaving the baby birds safe.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries (埋) its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays also steal food. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them. So they get back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner’s hand and start fighting again. When chimpanzees find food, they will cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running. But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimpanzees don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share the food.
56. Why does the plover pretend to be hurt
A. To catch the enemy. B. To show its helplessness.
C. To save its young. D. To leave the babies.
57. When others are watching them, the scrub jay will ________.

B. stop burying the food.
C. fly away immediately.
D. bury the food twice.
58. Which picture can we find a sneaky animal
A. B. C. D.
59. Why do many animals behave dishonestly
A. Because they want to have fun.
B. Because they need to do that for living on.
C. Because they want to share food with others.
D. Because they often fight with their enemies.
60. What can the best title for the passage
A. How do animals protect lives
B. Does Mother Nature agree
C. Do animals tell a lie
D. Honesty or dishonesty

When astronauts in Shenzhou XVII are flying high to study space, scientists are digging deep to study the center of Earth!
Earlier in May, China started drilling (钻) its first over 10,000-meter-deep borehole (钻井) in Xinjiang. By Oct 1, the hole was already 7,856 meters deep, reported Xinjiang Daily .
The borehole has a planned depth of 11,100 meters. It will take 457 days to dig, said Bloomberg News. When it’s finished, it will become the deepest hole in China and one of the deepest in the world.
The drill will go through more than ten layers of rock. The oldest layer is about 145 million years old. The Earth has lots of heat inside. So as the drill goes deeper, it faces higher and higher temperatures. The metal drill could get so hot that it would become as soft as noodles. The company doing the project, China National Petroleum Corp, tried to cool the rocks down but failed. Finally, they dealt with this problem by using high-tech tools.
According to Xinhua News, while testing drilling technologies, the hole will also give us useful information about Earth’s energy resources. The hole is being dug in an area rich in oil. The oil could be used to heat buildings and make fuel for cars and planes. It also helps scientists study the risks of disasters, such as earthquakes.
61. What’s the function of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the topic. B. To share an opinion.
C. To tell a story. D. To explain a problem.
62. What is true according to the scientists’ plans for the borehole
It will be the deepest hole in the world.
It is somewhere in the east of China.
It will end with the depth of 7,856 meters.
It will take more than a year to finish.
63. The company dealt with the high temperature underground by________.
A. making noodle - shaped drills.
B. cooling the rocks quickly.
C. using high - tech drills.
D. drilling deeper and deeper.
64. How could the hole help people
A. To tell the time of an earthquake.
B. To find more energy resources.
C. To supply people with a living place.
D. To warm people up.
65. The purpose of the passage is to tell us ________.
A. something about underground rocks
B. the inside of the Earth
C. new drills for drilling a hole
D. China’ s deep borehole program
