People who don’t feel confident in social situations often have trouble interacting with others.
However, anyone can boost their confidence by ensuring their body language conveys a positive message.
Practice these gestures and movements to project an air of confidence.
Lean Forward
When you are in a conversation, leaning forward indicates interest and attention, while maintaining
distance indicates that you are disinterested. Research suggests that nonverbal signals such as leaning
forward and facing straight ahead help convey feelings of interest.
Slow Your Movements
Fast movements make you appear more anxious. Everything from hand gestures to your walking pace
can make a difference; slow down and notice how you feel more confident when you take your time.
The key, however, is to maintain other signals like eye contact and posture while moving more slowly.
Slow movements combined with poor eye contact and slouched (耷拉的) posture may cause people to see
you less confident.
Keep Your Chin Up
Do you look at the ground when you are walking or talking Instead, keeping your head up and facing
your conversation partner conveys interest and confidence. It might feel unnatural initially, but you will
eventually become used to this more confident pose.
Give a Firm Handshake
A weak handshake is a sign of a lack of confidence, so offer a firm hand when meeting others. How
long your handshake lasts can also influence how people perceive you.
Research has found that the length of a normal handshake is around three seconds or less. Handshakes
lasting longer than three seconds are associated with less enjoyment of the interaction and more anxiety.
21. Which way of walking conveys confidence
A. Walk fast with head straight up.
B. Move fast with a leaning posture.
C. Walk slowly with proper eye contact.
D. Move slowly with maintained distance.
22. Which body language requires considering the length of time
A. Lean Forward. B. Slow Your Movements.
C. Keep Your Chin Up. D. Give a Firm Handshake.
23. Who is the text intended for
A. Those who have a passion for body language.
B. Those who run projects about body language.
C. Those who lack confidence in communication.
D. Those who desire to boost their language skills.

“The value of people cannot be defined,” this is the philosophy by which Majda Gibran, better
known in Egypt as “Mama Maggie”, lives. She devoted over three decades of her life to serving the less
高二英语学科 试题 第 3页(共 10 页)
fortunate. Her work empowered over 33,000 children in Cairo to achieve their potential and successfully
leave Cairo’s slums (贫民窟).
Her story begins with what was meant to be a quick visit to the slums in Cairo. She knew right away
she would devote the rest of her life to helping those in need, especially children. The scenes of poverty
in the slums forever changed her life. Mama Maggie soon abandoned the comforts of her previous life
and quit her job as an American University professor to lend a helping hand to those who needed her
most.
She began sharing meals, gifts and basic necessities to less fortunate families in the slums. Her
warmth and sincerity gave residents a sense of hope and dignity. In 1985, Mama Maggie founded the
Stephen’s Children Foundation, with the mission to empower children and young people to lead their
own development and lift them out of poverty. The foundation provides education and training to
thousands of children living in poverty. Over the last few years, the foundation has extended its social
and educational initiatives to thousands of families and children in other poor neighborhoods.
To date, Mama Maggie has established 92 educational centres nationwide to teach over 18,000
children and carried out healthcare campaigns that provides treatment to over 40,000 patients annually.
She conducts visits to more than 13,000 children to provide training services. Her foundation’s three
training centres for mothers and children empower families to earn their own income. Her foundation has
benefited over 33,000 children, with the help of about 2,000 volunteers, and it is still growing today.
Mama Maggie, a Nobel Prize nominee (被提名人), never sought fame or reward for her work. She
desires to be remembered as a hope maker who made a difference in the lives of every person that crossed
her path.

A. Her visit to the slums. B. The quitting of her previous work.
C. The saying of a philosopher. D. The potential of the less fortunate.
25. The foundation was mainly intended to __________.

Imagine you’re out in a foreign city to find a restaurant for dinner. Dozens of restaurants string
together, all with appetizing menus and similar prices.
How to pick the best place for a refreshment If you’re like most people, a simple cue (提示) is likely
to affect your choice. You will look for the busiest restaurant with the most diners because its popularity is
高二英语学科 试题 第 4页(共 10 页)
bound to reflect on the quality of food and service. But is this true In fact, bigger crowds could have come
about at random, and here’s why.
Early diners with no meaningful cues as to which restaurant to choose may have picked the restaurant
casually, for example selecting the place with the nicest name or the prettiest environment. Later passers-by
may have misinterpreted their choice as a well-informed decision and blindly followed their example. This
could have resulted in a snow-balling effect, creating a false impression of popularity. In this case,
following the example of theirs couldn’t be an ideal dinner choice.
Copying other people’s choices or simply going with the crowd is often referred to as “herd
behaviour”. It is a frequent occurrence among humans as well as many other animals, a common example
being sheep. Indeed, the so particularly obedient herd animals even inspired the creation of the term
“sheeple” , which combines the words “sheep” and “people” for individuals who tend to follow others.
Herding can appear to make a lot of sense.
I discussed previously the so-called “wisdom of crowds” often outperforms individual choices.
Furthermore, following the crowd appears to offer protection and comfort. Finally, following the herd
reduces the effort needed to make a decision.
Herd behaviors, while common and easy to explain, hold significant dangers. Contrary to the so-called
“wisdom of crowds”, herd behaviors typically rely on so-called “information cascades (倾泄 )”, where
people take on others’ beliefs or copy their choices without critically considering the hidden reasons. This
frequently leads to the imitation of unreasonable or simply stupid behaviors.
28. What will most new-comers consider when choosing a restaurant
A. Its popularity. B. Its service. C. Its food. D. Its environment.
29. What can we learn about “herd behavior”
A. It inspires people’s creation. B. It contributes to ideal choices.
C. It comes from sheep behaviour. D. It reflects people’s group psychology.
30. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A. The benefits of the phenomenon.
B. The reasons for the behavior.
C. The significance of the discussion.
D. The examples of the crowd wisdom.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Why You Shouldn’t Follow The Crowd.
B. How The Crowds Affects Your Choice.
C. Why “Herd Behaviour” Gains Popularity.
D. How You Can Avoid making blind decisions.

It’s well known that weightlifting can strengthen our muscles. Now, there’s increasing evidence that
strengthening the muscles we use to breathe is beneficial too. New research shows that daily muscle
training helps promote heart health and reduces high blood pressure.
“The muscles we use to breathe tend to shrink as we get older,” explains researcher Daniel, a
physiologist at the University of Colorado Boulder. To test what happens when these muscles are given a
高二英语学科 试题 第 5页(共 10 页)
good workout, he and his colleagues recruited healthy volunteers aged 18 to 82 to try a daily five-minute
technique using a resistance-breathing training device. When people breathe into it, the device provides
resistance, making it harder to breathe. “We found that doing 30 breaths per day for six weeks lowers
blood pressure by about 9 mmHg,” Daniel says. According to Joyner, a physician at the Mayo Clinic who
studies how the nervous system regulates blood pressure, that is the type of reduction with a blood pressure
drug.
So, how exactly does breath training lower blood pressure Daniel points to the role of endothelial (内
皮的) cells, which help widen our blood vessels (血管) and promote good blood flow. “What we found was
that six weeks of the training will increase endothelial function by about 45%,” Daniel explains.
The new study builds on a previous study and adds to the evidence that the training is beneficial for
adults of all ages. Before the results came in, Daniel had suspected that young, healthy adults might not
benefit as much. “But we saw strong effects,” Daniel says, pointing to a significant decline in blood
pressure for participants of all ages. He says the finding suggests the training could help healthy young
people prevent heart disease and the rise in blood pressure that tends to occur with aging.
The technique is not intended to replace exercise, he cautions, or to replace medicine for people with
high blood pressure. Instead, Daniel says, “it would be a good additional prevention for people who are
doing other healthy lifestyle approaches already.”
32. Who was most likely to be a volunteer in the study
A. An adult working nearby.
B. A pupil from a local school.
C. A senior with heart disease.
D. A backpacker staying for 2 weeks.
33. The underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A. giving the muscles a good workout.
B. doing 30 breaths per day for six weeks.
C. regulating blood pressure by the nerves.
D. lowering blood pressure by about 9 mmHg.
34. What can be known about the research result
A. It was far from satisfactory.
B. It confirmed Daniel’s doubt.
C. It was contrary to the previous study.
D. It was beyond Daniel’s expectation.
35. What does the text seem to advocate
A. Muscle training to promote our health.
B. Weightlifting to strengthen our muscles.
C. Daily breath training to reduce blood pressure.
D. Lifestyle approaches to preventing blood diseases.

Nowadays most people spend four hours every day staring at the television! With adults spending so
much time on it, little wonder that kids too spend more time in front of the television than outdoors.
With families becoming more and more nuclear, most mothers start off by using the television as a
“babysitter”. 36 However, most parents would rethink their strategy if they are aware of the side
effects of over exposure to the television.
Children watch on an average around 28 hours of television per week. 37 By the age of
eight, aggression becomes so rooted in a child that it predicts adult aggression. Besides, it has been found
that children who spend a lot of time in front of the television do poorly in school. 38
Consequently, their social development will be affected.
39 So it’s almost impossible to completely ban it from our children’s life. However, as
parents we could:
Get children interested in sports.
Encourage children to cultivate the reading habit.
Set a good example by limiting our own television viewing.
Help children develop other hobbies such as building models and drawing.
Choose the programs our children will watch, and stick to the schedule.
Television eats up the time our children are not studying or sleeping. All those things we want them to
be: a wild teenager, a scholar, a lover—when are they going to do all that 40 Help them get a
life—a real one!
A. So stop letting our children live in a make-believe world.
B. Television has been such an essential part of our daily lives.
C. This includes violence and viewing not suitable for their age.
D. Therefore, both parents and children should be aware of this fact.
E. And their children are left in front of the TV to avoid making trouble.
F. Moreover, it is harmful to children’s health, particularly their eyesight.
G. TV watching also reduces the time children spend communicating with others.

My dad believed in new experiences!
I have to admit the examples from his youth fascinated me. He specialized in his adventures growing
up in Omaha in the early 1900s. His brothers threw him into a lake to teach him to swim. His family kept a
cow, which he led into the church at Christmas to give Baby Jesus milk at the age of four. On and on! He
used those stories to urge me to fresh experiences.
One day he came home from work early and saw me watching a local TV show—Talent Sprouts, a
daily contest for kids fourteen and under. It didn’t take Dad long to look me in the eye. “You should go on
Talent Sprouts. ” He added, “You can play ‘Ave Maria’—an original by Schubert (舒伯特). Think of it—an
unforgettable experience to be on TV as an eleven-year-old!”
I quailed (退缩). I didn’t want to. I was basically shy. But I knew it would be useless to argue, so I
mailed my application with the required information. Days later, I received a notice about performance.
Dad was over the moon when I told him I had been assigned a day to perform less than two weeks
away. Still, I had very little confidence in my talent. I did practice several times each day. However, I either
skipped some beats or unable to grasp the rhythm well when practicing. I could never have played
Schubert’s original perfectly, so I was increasingly uneasy about the coming performance.
When my Monday came, I took a bus to the TV station with my Dad. I checked in at the desk. The

高二英语学科 答案 第2页(共 5 页)
I went to the piano and began to play. When my fingers danced over the keys, I was still haunted by
the ripple of unease and uncertainty. Then came the first note and the familiar melody lingered around the
auditorium as my fingers moved flexibly. Suddenly, I realized I had skipped a huge part. How could I get
smoothly back and filled in those beats I had no alternative but to hit the concluding beats. My
performance probably lasted barely two minutes. In a hurry, I came off the stage, feeling I was a loser. ( 86
words)
Disappointed, I returned to my seat, where my dad was waiting for me. Overcast by the unsuccessful
performance, I drooped my head, unable to utter a word. To my great surprise, my dad didn’t scold me. He
stroked my head affectionately and comforted me in a gentle voice, “Your performance was smooth. You
didn’t fall apart. All in all, a worthwhile experience.” Hearing my dad’s encouraging words, I raised my
head, tears blurring my eyes. At that moment, I had a fresh realization. Imperfect as the performance was, I
gained a lot from the new experience. ( 83 words)

(Text 1)
M: When will your dad get back from his business trip He’s been away for a long time.
W: Yes. It’s three weeks now. He won’t be back for another two weeks.
M: That is a long time. More than a month.
(Text 2)
W: I’m looking for employment.
M: What kind of work are you prepared to do
W: Any office job. I’d like to start working as soon as possible.
M: I’m sorry. But we haven’t had any employers ring us for over a week.
(Text 3)
M: Don’t forget to brush your teeth, sweetheart.
W: Okay, Dad. Will you read me a story
M: I’d be glad to. I’ll read you your favorites when you get under the covers.
(Text 4)
W: Have you read this new best-seller by Mike Brooklyn
M: No, I haven’t. I don’t really enjoy fiction.
W: I think you’d like this one — it’s a very fast-paced adventure, and Brooklyn has a really wild
imagination.
M: Really Maybe I’ll try to read it when I’m on vacation.
(Text 5)
W: Good morning, officer.
M: Good morning, madam. What can I do for you
W: All the cars have stayed here for nearly an hour. What’s the matter
M: Sorry, madam. There’s a traffic jam somewhere from Newton Road to Polkeith Road.
(Text 6)
W: Excuse me, can you tell me where the cinema is

M: Oh, I’m going there. Maybe you can go with me.
W: OK, thank you. I heard there was a wonderful movie tonight. So I’m going to buy the tickets.
M: Yeah, me too. I like the actor very much. Are you alone or with a companion
W: My child will go with me. He’s 7 years old.
M: Oh, the movie is very suitable for him I think. It’s the story of some good friends who take a trip
together and come into many funny things. He’ll laugh through the performance.
W: I see. Thank you very much.
(Text 7)
M: Excuse me, Mrs. Robert. I’m Mr. Green.
W: Oh, yes. Hello.
M: I wonder if I could ask a favor.
W: Why, certainly. Is it our dog I hope he hasn’t been chasing your cat.
M: No. It’s your son’s friends, I think.
W: I know Mike’s friends visit him a lot. He is in a band, and they always come here to practice. Is it the
noise
M: No. The thing is, sometimes when they visit, they park in front of the driveway, and I can’t get my car
out.
W: I understand. I’ll tell them to use the parking lot down the street. I guess they’re just too lazy to walk
here from the parking lot.
(Text 8)
M: What a fine day! Oh, I can enjoy reading on this balcony. I like it.
W: The balcony is very beautiful, but I don’t like the fact that it faces north. The best houses face south.
M: Oh, darling, I’m sorry, but we don’t have that kind of money for a south-facing house.
W: Well, forget it. I was just talking. The nice environment of this apartment is good for our children.
M: And you can walk to work and it is convenient for you to go shopping.
W: Yes. For our children, it’s also close to their schools. That’s the most satisfying to me.
M: I’m most attracted by the price. This is the cheapest building in this area.
W: Yeah. I wish we could move in earlier!
M: Oh, darling, refresh my memory. Our wedding anniversary is coming.
W: Thinking about the wedding, it’s just like yesterday.
(Text 9)
W: Eric, you’ve recently returned from a cycle trip with your dad across the U.S.A. Why did you want to
do this ride
M: I suppose the usual reason for doing something as mad as cycling five thousand kilometers in just two
months is to make thousands of pounds for various charities. We certainly did that, and spent large
amounts of time with each other too, which was wonderful. We decided to go, though, because we
fancied doing something really different during the summer holidays.
W: What was a typical day like
M: Every day was different. Some were good and some were quite difficult, but all were good experience.
It wasn’t actually how far we rode that made a day good or bad, it was more what happened. Having a

long conversation with some of the local people seemed to make us even happier than feeling the sun
on our faces.
W: And have you got plans for doing more cycling
M: I’m in my final year at school now, and I need to do well to get to university, so it wouldn’t be the best
time for me to go cycling across Australia, or wherever. Rather than just going out on weekend rides,
though, I’d much prefer to enter some competitions — over shorter distances of course!
W: Good luck, Eric!
