Basketball had always been a huge part of my life ever since I was little, and it had been my favorite sport until high school. I was captain of the team in my second year of high school. I felt I had to do very well. The stress I put myself under was unhealthy: I felt as if I couldn’t make mistakes, and that stopped me enjoying the game I once loved. I finished my second-year basketball season and had no fun at all.
My Spanish teacher came up to me after my second-year basketball season, asking if I had ever thought about playing Unified (融合的) Basketball. Unified Sports joins people with intellectual or physical disabilities (智力或身体缺陷) (called Athletes), and people without disabilities (called Partners), on the same team. The main goal is to build friendships and encourage inclusivity. I had thought about it before, but there was a rule that said I couldn’t play Unified if I played basketball for the school. So, I finally decided to quit school basketball.
Quitting basketball was not easy. I received strong opposition from my parents and the coaches as well as my friends who were on the team. It was not a popular or traditional decision, but I knew it was the right one for me.
Walking into my first Unified practice, I did not know what to expect. I awkwardly (尴尬地) introduced myself to a few of the Unified Athletes, but after the first day, it already seemed like we were becoming a family. We won a lot of games, but we also had the most fun I’ve ever had. All the stress I used to feel disappeared when I played with them. Seeing the Athletes score their first points of the season and then dance down the whole court excitedly is one of my favorite basketball memories.
Unified Sports opened my eyes to how much more there is to sports than winning and losing. The Athletes on the team thought that I was there to help them, but they did not know how much they helped me.
4. How did the author find playing basketball in his second year of high school
A. It did no good to his physical health. B. It took up too much of his free time.
C. It needed some special skills. D. It brought him too much pressure.
5. What was the reaction of the author’s parents to his decision to quit basketball
A. They were against it. B. They thought it was right for him.
C. They introduced another coach to the author. D. They took the author to hospital.
6. How did the author feel after taking up Unified Basketball
A. Awkward and silly. B. Stressed and bored.
C. Safe and confident. D. Relaxed and happy.
7 Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. My Love of Basketball
B. Unified Sports Changed My Life
C. My Memories of Playing Basketball
D. Sports Helped Me Make Lasting Friendships
C
As you walk around the UK in March, you might notice that some people are wearing a daffodil (水仙花) on their coats. The British wear these yellow flowers to show they support one of this country’s best-known charities: Marie Curie.
Marie Curie tries to ensure everyone who has cancer is cared for in the best possible way. It also helps fun d research into possible cures. Founded in 1948, it has been continuing with its goal ever since.
The charity was named after Marie Curie, a famous scientist. She experimented with newly-discovered elements to create the theory of radioactivity (放射性). Unfortunately, over-exposure to the radioactive elements made her develop a disease and die in 1934. Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in two different fields. Because of her pioneering work, the charity decided on the name of Marie Curie.
The daffodil is one of the first plants to flower during spring in the UK, which marks the return of flowering plants to the ecosystem after winter. Because of this, the charity uses the daffodil as a symbol, hoping cancer patients could recover from sickness.
Everyone you see wearing a daffodil has contributed to the charity, but each daffodil is worth only what you want to pay for it. The charity does ask that you stick to a minimum amount of 1.
The charity encourages people to start wearing their daffodils at the start of March, when the “Great Daffodil Appeal” kicks off. But that doesn’t mean you can only wear them in March. People are sometimes seen walking around with daffodils on their clothes all year round.
8. Why do some British people wear a daffodil
A. To advocate a charity. B. To celebrate patients’ recovery.
C. To remember a scientist. D. To offer hope to cancer patients.
9. What makes the charity use the name of Marie Curie

C. Marie Curie’s study on radioactivity. D. Marie Curie’s concern over cancer patients.
10. What does the daffodil imply according to the charity
A. Bringing life to other people. B. Returning of flowering plants.
C. Contributing money to the charity. D. Encouraging patients to cheer up.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. A change in a British custom. B. The effect of a campaign.
C. A special activity held in March. D. The time to wear daffodils.
D
Food blogs, celebrities, and nutritionists all advocate the benefits of eating organic (有机的) fruits and vegetables. But a new study published in Science Advances paints a more complex picture. While organic produce is likely slightly healthier to eat and, in some ways, more sustainable to grow, there are also downsides.
Organic fruits and vegetables typically cost more than conventional ones. To get a certificate as organic, farmers must meet specific criteria, including growing produce without the use of genetic engineering and chemical inputs. Without these methods, the growing process typically requires more labor, time, and money, a cost that is passed down to consumers.
It’s true that in many ways, organic is more sustainable than conventional farming. But when it comes to environmental concerns such as greenhouse gas output and water loss, the comparison gets complex. Organic farms produce less greenhouse gas output per acre. However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides (杀虫剂), and other methods that increase efficiency (效率), organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms. While there isn’t a whole lot research on the topic, the few studies that do exist suggest green gas output and water loss might actually be higher on organic farms, on a per unit basis, says study author Verena Seurfert.
In addition, while organic produce is likely more nutritious than conventional fruit and vegetables, there’s not a lot of evidence to support the claim that these often slight differences influence consumer health. The same is true for pesticide remainder. In developed countries, where pesticide use is tightly regulated, there’s no scientific consensus on how these often slight differences influence human health.
Still Seurfert stresses that if you can afford to eat organic, you should do so. Organic farms provide safer work environments for workers, plus they support great biodiversity. The real takeaway from her study is not that organic is bad but that the practice needs more studies to increase yield without lowering sustainability.
But if you can’t afford to buy organic produce, don’t stress too much, particularly from a nutritional perspective.
12. What does the underlined word “downsides” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean
A. Dangers. B. Drawbacks. C. Benefits. D. Differences.
13. Which key factor makes it hard to compare organic farming and conventional farming when it comes to environmental concerns
A. The yield. B. The price. C. The water loss. D. The labor.
14. Which of the following will the author most probably agree with
A. Farmers, work environment should be improved.
B. Organic produce should be made more efficiently.
C. It isn’t wise for consumers to buy organic products.
D. Pesticide remainder does no harm to people’s health.
15. In the author’s opinion, why should we support organic produce
A. It’s environmentally friendly. B. It’s more nutritious.
C. It helps keep the variety of plants. D. It’s safer for consumers.

“How can I get that fifty dollars ” he thought to himself. His mind was wondering when Mother’s voice disturbed his thoughts. “Kareem, I just ran into Aunty Kim, our neighbour who just moved in next door. Her son, Shawn, will cycle to school next week. Could you show him the shortcut to school later It’s Saturday anyway!” Hearing this, Kareem had no option but to obey it, He knew Mother had probably already volunteered his service to Aunty Kim. “Oh, here’s a mail from your Grandma. Open it!” added Mother.
Kareem’s grandmother lived abroad and she would send him photos and cards. He opened the envelope and pulled out a greeting card. Incredibly, a fifty dollar note slipped out as well! Kareem was wild with joy. Waving the note in the air, he shouted happily, “Enough money for my bike!”
At 2 p. m. Kareem met Shawn as arranged by their mothers. The sooner he finished this task, the sooner he could go to the bike shop. While the boys were cycling, a squirrel (松鼠) appeared behind a parked car and dashed across the road so suddenly that the boys knocked into each other and fell down heavily. Kareem said regretfully, “I forgot to warn you about the squirrel population here.” As Kareem was lifting up his broken bike, Shawn cried anxiously, “Oh, my poor bike! It’s completely broken.”

Still, Seurfert stresses that if you can afford to eat organic, you should do so.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. C

第一段最后一句“While organic produce is likely slightly healthier to eat and, in some ways, more sustainable to grow(有机农产品吃起来可能稍微更健康,在某种程度上,种植起来更可持续)”表示转折关系,说明有机植物也有不利之处。文章2-5段详细说明了这些缺点。该词意为“缺点,不利之处”。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段三四句“Organic farms produce less greenhouse gas output per acre. However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides, and other methods that increase efficiency , organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms.(有机农场每英亩产生的温室气体更少。然而,由于禁止使用基因工程、杀虫剂和其他提高效率的方法,有机农场的产量也比传统农场低19% - 25%)”和文章倒数第二句“The real takeaway from her study is not that organic is bad but that the practice needs more studies to increase yield without lowering sustainability.(从她的研究中得出的真正结论不是有机食品不好,而是需要更多的研究来提高产量,而不降低可持续性)”可知,尽管有机植物产生的温室气体较少,但是有机植物的产量较低。要想和传统方法生产出同样多的食物,对环境的影响也很大。所以生产量是其中的一个重要的因素。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第四句“However, because they are barred from using genetic engineering, pesticides, and other methods that increase efficiency, organic farms also produce an estimated 19% to 25% less yield than conventional farms.(有机农场每英亩产生的温室气体更少。

Jumping rope is popular but we tend to ignore (忽视) its benefits. ____16____ A study found that college men who spent 10 minutes jumping rope daily for six weeks improved their cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness just as much as college men who spent thirty minutes jogging for the same time. Here are some benefits of jumping rope.
____17____
Since most of your major muscles are working when you jump rope, the exercise creates a lot of heat in the body. Your body needs to burn more fuel to produce this energy, so it burns lots of calories. It burns more calories than any other exercises, such as jogging, cycling and swimming.
Improves coordination (协调)
Jumping rope requires good coordination, especially as you advance to more skilled moves. ____18____ It improves coordination by requiring several body parts to communicate in order to complete one movement. The feet must jump in time with the wrists turning in order to create a continuous jumping motion.
Reduces injury risk
With your improved coordination from jumping rope, you’ll be less likely to get hurt either during exercise or in daily activities. ____19____ As a result, you are more agile (灵活的) and your body awareness is improved greatly. This guarantees fewer injuries.
Improves heart health
Since jumping rope gets your heart pumping, it’s great for your cardiovascular system and heart health. Jumping rope can increase your VO2 Max (最大摄氧量), the measure of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can breathe during exercise. The higher someone’s VO2 max, the more cardiovascular endurance (耐受力) they have.
Jumping rope gives us a full-body workout with just one piece of equipment and one move. ____20____ Jump to some music, or take your rope to a nearby park to enjoy the fun.
A. Burns calories
B. Improves muscles
C. It benefits us not only physically but also mentally.
D. You can quickly swing the rope twice within each jump.

“A Speedster X bike or two old models ” Kareem hesitated. He thought to himself, “Whatever happened was not my fault. I’m buying Speedster X anyway.” However, as the image of Shawn and his disabled bike flashed before him repeatedly, he felt a shiver running down his body. An inner voice insisted that he should reach out a helping hand. Just at that moment, his initial guilt gave way to a sense of responsibility. After a quick mental calculation, he decided to buy two old models.
“Hi!” Kareem appeared at Shawn’s door cheerfully and asked, “Want to ride together ” Shawn got annoyed at the silly question. He moved his lips as if to say something but before he could say anything, Kareem took a stride to the side, revealing two shiny identical bikes magically. “What... How come No, it couldn’t be...”, Shawn beamed with excitement, tears clouding his eyes. Mother, who had witnessed the scene from the window, walked up to Kareem and patted his shoulder gently and playfully, “Son! I’m really proud of you.”
