For many years, Croatian-American recording artist Nenad Bach toured the world performing with famous musicians like Bono and Pavarotti. Everything came to a stop in 2010, however, when Nenad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease—a progressive disease that affects a person’s movement.
“I love music,” he said. “When I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2010, I didn’t know what it was. Five years later, I couldn’t even play the guitar.”
One day, a friend of Nenad’s asked him to play ping-pong with him, and Nenad said yes. The effects were immediate and positive: he woke up the next day filled with a “desire to live”, and his physical and mental issues had improved. Encouraged, he kept playing.
For months he told everyone around him about how ping-pong was helping his Parkinson’s, but his praise fell on deaf ears. Finally, he took matters into his own hands and started hosting Ping Pong Parkinson’s events at the Westchester Table Tennis Center in Pleasantville, New York. Once the events attracted enough attention, he started an organization called Ping Pong Parkinson (PPP) in March 2017.
PPP hopes to encourage people living with Parkinson’s to play ping-pong for its benefits. In addition to promoting social connectivity, PPP also says that it increases neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) which creates new neural pathways in the brain. Nenad has seen evidence of this with his own eyes many times in the past years. He said that their “facial expression changes from when they arrive until they leave. In addition, some people start walking again.”
Nenad has made spreading the word about the power of ping-pong his new life’s work! He hopes others will take up the sport and see the same improvements he’s enjoyed since the first time he picked up a paddle (乒乓球拍).
24. What happened to Nenad in 2015
A. His disease got worse. B. He learned to perform.
C. He began to play the guitar. D. His acting journey ended.
25. What caused Nenad to have hopes for life again
A. Organizing social events. B. Taking his mind off his work.
C. Setting up Ping Pong Parkinson. D. Playing ping-pong with his friend.
26. What was people’s attitude to Nenad’s words about ping-pong at first
A. Uncertain. B. Favorable. C. Uninterested. D. Curious.
27. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Nenad’s fighting against Parkinson.
B. The benefits of playing ping-pong.
C. The severity of Parkinson’s disease.
D. The sporting experience of Nenad.

Elon Musk on Wednesday announced that he has formed a new artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, which has employed researchers from Google, OpenAI and other top technology companies. The goal, Musk tweeted, is “ to understand reality.”
xAI is a separate company from Musk’s other businesses, such as Tesla and Twitter, but will work closely with them. Musk isn’t a novice to AI given that Tesla uses the technology in its cars. Musk suggested that the reason he picked July 12, 2023, to announce the start of xAI is connected with a science fiction classic, Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” In his tweet, he noted that adding the date 7-12-23 equals 42, which is the answer to life.
“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe” the xAI website states.
The company said it will be advised by Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety. Hendrycks pointed out where AI could cause problems. “AIs could be used by bad people to make new deadly bioweapons (生物武器),” Hendrycks said in May. “Or people could make AI that tries to hurt people on purpose. If this AI was really smart, it could be a big danger to all of us.”
The first time xAI was shown to the public was after Musk talked about it in April to the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Musk told Carlson that OpenAI’s ChatGPT was a bit biased (有偏见的) and that he wanted to create a different tool that would be a super honest AI that tries to learn how everything in the world works.
The startup reflected Musk’s long-voiced concerns about a future in which AI systems could present an existential risk to humanity. The idea, Musk said, is that an AI that wants to understand humanity is less likely to destroy it.
28. What does the underlined word “novice” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Boss. B. Coach. C. Partner. D. Beginner.
29. Why did Musk announce the start of xAI on July 12, 2023
A. He chose the date to remember a friend.
B. He was influenced by a number in a book.
C. It was suggested by a writer at his invitation.
D. It was the decision of the 11 researchers of xAI.
30. What does Hendrycks think of AI
A. It can benefit lots of people.
B. It is worrying to some extent.
C. It will not be smarter than humans.
D. It can be used to punish bad people.
31. What did Musk say to Carlson
A. It will take time to create a new AI.
B. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has its advantages.
C. Creating an honest AI is his dream.
D. It is hard to change people’s ideas of AI.

China has a unique advantage that is recognized by the world: its huge market. China has a population of more than 1.4 billion, larger than the combined population of all developed countries today. It is predicted that in the next 15 years or so, China’s middle-income group will grow from 400 million to 800 million.
McKinsey Global Institute estimates that in 2020, 55 Chinese cities could be classified as high-income cities, covering 27 percent of China’s population. By 2030, the number of high-income cities in China will increase to 93, which will be home to 44 percent of the population.
China is the biggest engine of global growth and is expected to contribute to one-third of global growth this year.
China has recently announced a series of new measures to promote opening-up, including improving the protection mechanism (机制) for foreign investment rights and interests, further reducing the negative list for foreign investment access, and guaranteeing the national treatment of foreign-invested ventures. This once again shows China’s determination to build a market-oriented (以市场为导向的), law-based and international business environment.
China’s advantages are reflected in its comprehensive cost performance, including world-class infrastructure, complete industrial structure, long industry chains and the responsiveness of the government system, as well as its large number of entrepreneurs (企业家) and high-quality workers. These are competitive advantages that no other country has all of.
Statistics show that in the first 10 months of this year, 41,947 new foreign-invested enterprises were established in China, an increase of 32.1 percent year-on-year. It is fair to say that whoever gives up on the Chinese market is separating themselves from opportunities and the future. China brings energy, certainty and growth to a world that is in short supply of them as it enters a period of change. That explains China's continued appeal to the foreign business community.
32. According to Paragraphs 1&2, which of the following might the author agree with
A. China’s high-income cities will house 44 percent of the population in 2030.
B. China’s population is larger than the population of all developing countries.
C. China’s middle-income group will increase by 800 million in the next 15 years.
D. China’s 27 percent population could be classified as low-income group in 2020.
33. What does “this” refer to in paragraph 4
A. Protecting foreign investment rights and interests better.
B. Reducing the negative list for foreign investment access.
C. Announcing a series of new measures to promote opening-up.
D. Ensuring the national treatment of foreign-invested ventures.
34. China’s advantages are reflected in the following aspects EXCEPT .
A. The numerous entrepreneurs. B. The world’s first-class facilities.
C. The overall industrial structure. D. The insufficient industry chains
35. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To persuade us to become entrepreneurs.
B. To share information about Chinese market.
C. To tell us how to improve China’s economy.
D. To appeal to the foreign business community.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As a captain, you should know exactly what to do when your team lose a game because how your team deals with defeat has an important impact on how they perform in the next match. 36
Emotions are OK.
You shouldn’t deny your players the opportunity to show their emotions when they lose but make sure they know where the boundaries are. 37 For example, showing dissatisfaction towards a teammate or the referee means they start the next game on the bench. They will soon learn to control their emotions.
Have a post-match routine.
Introduce a post-match routine that players follow—win or lose. For instance, you could encourage them to shake hands with opponents, and the referee, as soon as the final whistle sounds. 38
Encourage positivity.
Always acknowledge the disappointment of your players, but emphasize the positive elements of the performance. It is important that players go home with a positive mindset after the game. 39 Make them understand although they cannot win the matches they have already lost, they can now focus on winning the next one.
40
If you are going through some bad results, one way of keeping players motivated is to de-emphasize winning and focus on improving skills. After a defeat, if you make your next match a must-win game, you are putting more pressure on your players than is needed. Instead, try setting the team realistic goals within the game.
A. Stay cool as a captain.
B. Take the focus off winning.
C. Such routine can help players deal with losing graciously.
D. No one individual is ever responsible for victory or defeat.
E. They should know they have achieved something despite the result.
F. You should help your team understand why losing can be a step forward.
G. Set standards of behaviour and give punishment if players don’t follow them.

When Mike was a child, Mike often got sick and had few friends. His parents hoped him to do more exercise. So they often encouraged him to do more sports. As he grew up, he became interested in climbing mountains. When he was 14, he climbed his first mountain—a 3,600-foot peak. And at that time, he was a bit overweight and breathless when he reached the mountaintop. But he was hooked by the challenge of conquering (征服) something bigger than himself. Since then, he’d climbed nearly 50 peaks and met many friends.
He usually went climbing with his friend David, whom he’d met during climbing a mountain. Two years ago, on November 28, when he was 16, Mike and David drove to Oregon to challenge Mount Hood—11,130-foot.
Both of them were prepared. Starting winter climbs at night is safer because there’s less risk of the sun melting the snow. That day, they started at 2 a.m., following the paths along the ski runs. The temperature was about 8 degrees, and they wore easy layers that they could easily take off, knowing hiking in the snow would make them warm.
After about4 hours, they reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plain at about 10,000 feet, just before the final push to the peak. However, the wind conditions here were poor. Mike’s exposed skin felt as though it were burning, but David and Mike were not discouraged and went ahead. They were prepared and longing for the climb.
The trail they followed grew narrower and steeper (险峻). At around 8 a.m., they reached a patch (小块) of ice called an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall and sloped (倾斜) at a 70-degree angle.
Mike volunteered to go first. He placed his right foot on the ice step. When he set his foot on it, it remained good. Confident he was safe, he put his all weight on it. Suddenly, he heard a crack (破裂), and a whole slab (片) of ice broke off the step, right under his foot.
注意:续写词数应为150左右

七、读后续写(25’)
One possible version:
In an instant, Mike fell backward. Mike could hear David calling his name as he fell down. He stuck out his arms and legs, grabbing at anything. After a few seconds, he came to a stop on a shallow slop. His clothes and helmet were broken, and his face was bloodied from cuts and scratches. Then he took a survey of his body to see where he was hurt, starting with his head, then his neck and arms. He was fine, except that he was suffering from a sharp, unbearable pain in his left leg.
Seeing blood from Mike’s left leg, David realized they needed help. After fixing Mike’s leg with a stick, David called the Mountain Rescue. And then he stayed by Mike’s side while Mike tried not to cry from the pain. Mike had been lying on the ice shaking and in pain for four hours by the time the rescuers reached him. They fastened Mike to a sled and pulled him down the mountain. Out of breath, David accompanied Mike all the time. Lying in the sled and staring at David, Mike smiled from the bottom of his heart, not only for the timely rescue, but for the true friend.

W: Well, I’ve been thinking about nothing but the coming exams.
Text3
W: Steven, have you got better now
M: Yeah, but the doctor said I had to stay here for another day for observation. I really miss home, and I’m worried about my studies.
Text4
M: Mom, I just finished my paper. Can you read it before I hand it in
W: Sure, my boy. You have worked hard on it. There are some excellent ideas. It is surely worth all the time.
Text5
W: I hear you’ve moved to a new apartment. On what floor is it
M: It’s on the tenth floor of a high-rise building. We’ve got two lifts which work round the clock.
W: Good. I guess you’ll arrange a housewarming party for it.
M: Of course.

W: Your daughters are so cute! I can’t believe they’re only seven years old. How did they learn so much already
M: Well, my wife and I have been reading to them since they were very young. So they became interested in reading at young age. They’ve both been reading well since the age five.
W: That’s wonderful! I wish my son would do that, too.
M: Don’t worry too much about him. He’ll read more when he’s ready. It’s better to let him do what he’s most
interested in. He’s only six, right

M: Hey, Nina. You look down today. I guess that you didn’t do well in exams.
W: Well, my English is very disappointing. I got a C.
M: Oh. Why You said you liked it very much.
W: Well, I do, but I have problems understanding all those grammar rules. I get them all mixed up in my head!
M: Oh, poor girl! And what about your math
W: Ah, it’s a piece of cake.
M: Oh.And how are you doing in history
W: Oh, that’s my favorite class. Mr Jones always makes his lessons attractive.

M: So, do you often ski here
W: No. This is my first time. Actually this is my first time skiing ever.
M: So. How do you like it so far
W: The snow is great. But there are too many people. Some stupid tall skier was going so fast that he drove me into some trees. I fell down, hit my head and lost one of my gloves.
M: Wow. Well, did the tall man stop and apologize
W: He didn’t stop. But he said something that I didn’t hear clearly. I need to find him.
M: What are you going to do if you see him
W: He owes me an apology.

M: Jane. Where’s the closest ATM
W: It’s not far. Do you see that yellow building over there on King Street
M: The big one or the small one
W: The big one. It’s right next to it, opposite the post office.
M: Do you know if there’s a convenience store around here
W: I don’t think there’s one around here. The closest one is on 3rd Street, but it’s small and it’s closed now.
M: I really need to get some things before I leave.
W: Well. You could go to 22nd Street. There are lots of stores down there that are open 24 hours a day.
M: Can I take the bus to get there
W: Yes, but that’ll probably take about forty minutes. Subway will be fifteen minutes faster though you’ll have to walk quite some distance to the subway station. You should just take a cab since it’s getting dark soon.
M: Won’t that be expensive
W: No, from here I think it’s only about 5 dollars.
M: OK. Thanks a lot.

W: Good morning, everyone. Today let’s go on with our talk about British English and America English. Some people believe that American English and British English are very different, but in fact they are not. People from the two countries have no difficulty understanding each other. There are only a few hundred words and expressions that are different, and most of these are words having to do with daily life. You can see a few of them in the paper I gave you last class. For example, Americans say “truck” but the British say “lorry” and another famous example is “gas” which is used in the United States but in England people say “petrol”. Although the number of these differences is quite small, something confusing can occur sometimes. If an American says “We have to put the baby down”, a British person may be quite shocked because in England, to “put down” means to kill, for example, a sick dog is put down. In contrast, in the United States to “put down a baby” simply means to put it to sleep. OK, that's all from me today. You are expected to find more about the differences after class.
