When reading, my mother likes to slice a paragraph or a sentence out and attach it to the wall of her kitchen. She picks boring sentences that puzzle me. But I prefer copying favorite bright lines into a journal in soft, gray No. 2 pencil, word by word.
She doesn't know any of this. There's nothing shocking: for our chatting. We seldom begin certain conversations though we talk on the phone weekly, sometimes making each other laugh so hard that I choke and she cries. But what we don't say could fill up rooms. Fights with my father. Small failures in school. Anything that really upsets us,
My mother has never told me "I love you, Lisa."—as if the four-word absence explains who I am—so I carry it with me, like a label on me. The last time she almost spoke the words was two years ago, when she called to tell me a friend had been in hospital. I said, "I love you, Mom." She stopped for a while and then said, "Thank you." I haven't said it since, but I've wondered why my mother doesn't until I've found a poem that supplies words for the blank spaces I try to understand in our conversations:
Don't fill up on bread. I say absent-mindedly. The servings here are huge.
My son, middle-aged, says: Did you really just say that to me
What he doesn't know is that when we're walking together, I desire to reach for his hand.
It's humble, yet heartbreaking. After copying it down in my journal, I emailed it to mom, adding "This poem makes me think of you." My mother doesn't read poetry—or at least, she doesn't tell me, and I felt nervous clicking "Send".
She never mentioned the poem. But the next time I went home for vacation, I noticed something new in the kitchen fixed to an antique board: the poem. The board hung above the heater, the warmest spot in the kitchen. The poem still hangs there. Neither my mother nor I have ever spoken about it.
24. In writing paragraph 1, the author aims to___________.
A. stress the theme B. establish the setting
C. represent the characters D. create the atmosphere
25. Which of the following best describes the mother-daughter relationship
A. Shaky. B. Distant. C. Reserved. D. Intense.
26. Why did the author send the poem to her mom
A. It reminded her of mom's love. B. She wanted to apologize to mom.
C. It suited mom's taste of literature. D. She needed an interpretation from mom.
27. What does the poem mean to mom
A. A memory of golden days. B. Daughter's gratefulness to her.
C. A decoration in the plain kitchen. D. Daughter's understanding of her.
C
Coming upon a clear-cut in an old forest is a shocking experience. Trees large and small are collapsed one above the other in pile, and the ground is covered with the tracks of heavy machinery. Such was the scene when forest activist Zack Porter and I hiked a newly built logging(伐木)road in Green Mountain National Forest.
Clear-cutting in the American forests has long been widespread. But now, the Forest Habitat Creation Project represents new reasoning which is hotly debated—that clear-cutting benefits native creatures. The thinking is that clear-cutting done wisely can copy natural disturbances, for example, from insect invasions(入侵)or from storms overturning older trees that produce what ecologists call Early Successional Habitats—places where young trees and bushes get the upper hand and animals that depend on such habitat grow well.
The project also states that forests "can only be saved by being destroyed"—by keeping them young. Timber(木材)interests are enthusiastic about the approach because it lets them profit from cutting trees while claiming the significance of conservation. Hunting groups favor it because a younger, less thick forest makes it easier to find the game and birds they're tracking.
Nevertheless, Porter says, "Allowing some of the oldest standing trees in New England to be removed is equal to dereliction of duty on the part of the government, who sees the forests as commodities(商品)” "Forests can produce clean water, clean air, carbon storage, and biodiversity that we need," he continues as we walk among lovely mixed hardwoods and evergreens that are cut down for logging. "We shouldn't be removing them for short-term gain."
In this sense, Zack Porter's description of logging for wildlife for short-term gain—the short-term gain of favoring habitat for species people today want to see and hunt—is reasonable.
28. How does the author start the text
A. By presenting some ideas. B. By listing some evidence.
C. By comparing different views. D. By stating his own experience.
29. Which argument does the Forest Habitat Creation Project hold
A. Profits can be made from logging.
B. Clear-cutting is beneficial to the wildlife.
C. The conservation of forest is of significance.
D. Clear-cutting can cause natural disturbances.
30. What does the underlined word "dereliction" mean in paragraph 4
A. Fulfillment. B. Promise. C. Misconduct. D. Exposure.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. A New Approach to Forest Protection B. A Hiking Experience in the Logging Road
C. How to Build Early Successional Habitats D. Is Clear-cutting Forests Good for Wildlife
D
Your smartphone breaks. The repair costs too much money. So you give up and buy a new device. That this happens so often is no coincidence(巧合).
Many big device makers are putting more new products on the market. But they do not sell specialized tools and parts needed for repairs. And they offer no instruction on how to repair their products. As a result, the independent repair shops in your neighborhood find they cannot repair your broken smartphone. You can only go to faraway authorized(经授权的)repair shops to get the necessary repair service, which is often costly.
In recent years, some producers have taken steps to make repairs easier, but there's a growing effort across the world to push them to do more. Last week, the Right to Repair movement heard good news from the White House. The president of the US on Friday signed an order aimed at encouraging healthy competition in the US economy. It includes a condition for the Federal Trade Commission(FTC). The FTC was asked to make rules preventing producers from limiting independent device repair shops and DIY repairs,
"Right to Repair" is a global movement to make sure everyone has the right to fix the products they own. The idea has generally come from the United States. The earliest known published reference using the group of words comes from the auto industry dating back to 2003. Its supporters require companies to provide their parts, tools and information for consumers and repair shops. They also encourage the government to make laws to force producers to increase device repairablity.
The FTC in May presented a 56-page report. It said that "many consumer products have become harder to fix." The report also found that "the burden of repair limits may fall more heavily on communities of color and consumers having little money" because many independent repair shops are owned by people of color and because high-cost repairs hit low-paid consumers harder.
32. What is the problem in the product market according to the text
A. Electronic products' quality is low. B. The repair market makes little money.
C. The prices of new devices keep rising. D. Customers have difficulty repairing devices.
33. What is the US government's attitude to the "Right to Repair" movement
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
34. Why is "auto industry” mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To provide a solution. B. To reach a conclusion.
C. To give background information. D. To introduce a new topic for discussion.
35. What can we learn about the movement from the last paragraph
A. It may especially benefit the poor. B. It will help reduce production costs.
C. It was started by communities of color. D. It is supported by authorized repair shops.

How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career
When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways.
Think about what you like to do. If you like writing or doing crafts, you might consider these things. This is not a bad way to go, of course, but you can't always make money doing things you like(like video games or drinking beer). 36
Think about a well-paid job that you can do and doesn't sound so bad. 37 Or maybe that's our of your educational reach, so you choose office or retail worker. These are all great choices. But often they are not something you're really passionate about. It's kind of like just doing something because it's there—not very inspired.
38 Try to do something to serve a community or make the world better. For example, taking care of children, because you really want to help children get a great start in life, or blossom into who they want to be or getting into government or social work to improve the conditions of the community you live in or becoming a scientist to help ease the environmental crisis or find a cure for a terrible disease. 39 And if you choose one of them for that purpose, you will serve in that work feeling a sense of purpose each day.
40 The point isn't how you serve the world, but just serving the world in some way will help you feel filled with purpose. If you choose a purposeful and enjoyable job, you're always further along than most people.
A. There are endless ways to do that.
B. Maybe a doctor, engineer or lawyer
C. However, there's another way that is perhaps better.
D. You are dreaming of a well-paid job which you like best.
E. It's essential not to concentrate on interests and good payment.
F. Each of these is just one of many possibilities filled with purpose.
G. And sometimes things you like are better as a hobby or side passion.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lungs nearly burst. I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached the end of the pool.
Earlier that month, I had handed in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide(滑梯). I was capable of more. One day the manager suggested "This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a lifeguard "
"Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is to complete a certification class.”
Thanks to him, his words inspired me—You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.
Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land-based and water-based emergencies.
My new work as a lifeguard started soon. A well-intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary and useless.
Today appeared to be another uneventful and peaceful day. However, shortly after the other lifeguards signaled to the children to leave and exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
"Something must have gone wrong with him," I thought to myself. Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck.

第一节
Dear Tony,
Sorry to learn that you are having trouble in getting accustomed to the new school. Perhaps the following suggestions are helpful.
In most cases, the language barrier becomes a major obstacle, and thus learning the local language well is bound to make your daily life easier. Additionally, it is advised to take an active part in class and after-school activities, which can help your classmates learn more about you. It's also a good idea to make friends and develop new relationships, which will surely relieve your loneliness and anxiety.
Just be patient. Wish to see your improvement soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
"Something must have gone wrong with him," I thought to myself. Sure enough, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands desperately. I quickly dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had sunk to the bottom of the pool, which filled my heart with fright and concern. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. I could tell that he had no heartbeat and wasn't breathing. Every second counted! Without hesitation, I did first aid, performing CPR as trained. Other guards watching anxiously, I carried on, sweating. Suddenly, a stream of water burst out of his mouth and the boy coughed intensely. Seeing the boy regain consciousness, those around broke into cheers. Exhausted, I sighed with relief. I thought had I accepted that easy position, I would have been nothing but a bystander. I'm happy I didn't take the easy way out.

Text 10
The holiday season is coming up and many cultures give gifts for different holidays. I'm not really good at choosing gifts for people, though. Because every time I go and buy something for someone, I want to buy something that I like and I would think that it would look good on them or something. But then my friends don't really like the gift so much because it doesn't suit them. For example, I bought a pair of earrings for a friend and then I realized that she doesn't really like jewelries, so she never wore it. It's kind of hard to know what they want. Actually, for that reason, I don't like giving gifts at all. I think it's because of my background, like studying economics. It's just, to me, inefficient. You' re buying something, you don't know if they really want it and they say, "Oh. It's the thought that counts." You waste time finding the gift and then you give them the gift and maybe they don't use it. So I'm not a big fan of gift giving. Even for birthdays. And for me, if it were my birthday, I would have someone make a card for me. It would have more value than someone buying gifts for me anyway.
