Teaching Procedure:
Lead-in:
Q1: What’s the disaster shown in the picture
Q2: How much do you know about it
Keys: It is a tsunami. A tsunami is an extremely large ocean wave which is often caused by earthquake, landslide, or volcanic eruption. It does great damage to the human beings.
Purpose: To activate students’ knowledge of the natural disaster tsunami, paving the way for the news report.
Step 1: Fast-reading. Skim the news report and analyze the structure
Guide the students to explore the elements of a news report

Step 3: Read the summary
A summary is a short statement of a long passage, which only includes the main ideas and important information of the passage. Now please read the summary and circle the main points.
Keys: date, place, event, effect
Think: Could you add the time and cause information to the summary
Purpose: have students understand the essential points of a summary
Step 4. Write a summary of the Night the Earth Didn’t Sleep

An earthquake hit Tangshan, China on 28 July 1976. Before the earthquake, strange things happened in the countryside. More than 400,000 people were killed or injured in the earthquake. Nearly everything in the city was destroyed. After the quake, 150,000 soldiers and more than 10,000 doctors and nurses and many workers were sent to do rescue work. With support from the government and efforts of the city's people, a new Tangshan was built upon the ruins.
