Passage1
When I was 13,I climbed my first mountain—a fairly gentle 3,900-foot peak near where I live.I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the summit. But I loved the challenge of conquering something bigger than myself.Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I’d finally found a hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen. Two years ago,on December 30,when I was 16,she and I drove to Oregon to tackle 11,240-foot Mount Hood.We started at 3 a.m.,following the paths alongside the ski runs.Along the way,we met two other climbers and the four of us continued on together.
After about five hours,we reached a plateau(高原) at about 10,000 feet, just before the final push to the top.By this point, the wind conditions were nasty. My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead.
The trail(路径) we followed grew narrower and steeper. At around 9 a.m.,we reached a patch of ice called an ice step.I volunteered to go first.I placed my left foot on the ice step.Confident I was safe,I put my full weight on it.Suddenly,I heard a crack, and the whole ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
In an instant,I fell backward, rolling down the mountain.I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything. That stopped my somersaulting(翻滚) down the mountain, but I was still sliding. After a few seconds,I came to a stop.I’d fallen 600 feet.
I took a survey of my body to see where I was hurt, starting with my head, then my neck and arms. For the most part,I was fine, except that I was suffering from a sharp, agonizing(痛苦难忍的) pain in my left leg.

Passage2
It was in the midwinter, and the couple trudged(跋涉) through the freezing night, seeking shelter. The father-to-be scanned the roadside for some home, some inn, some stable where his struggling companion might rest safely for the night. He looked over at her frequently. She labored along;her way made heavier by the new life growing inside her. They needed a warm, dry place safe from the bitter wind.
Their names were not Mary and Joseph, but Pepper and Cooper.Nor were they man and wife, but rather a pair of beagles(小猎犬) on a rural highway outside of town.
That December night,Gus Kiebel,a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see,but he could tell the dogs were wearing collars and tags(标签).What were they doing out here on this stretch of road He parked his truck and approached the animals.
Gus stretched out his hands to the beagles, which made no effort to escape. He placed the dogs in his truck,on the floor of the passenger side.By the time he came around to the driver’s side,he found that they had climbed onto the passenger seat and were snuggled(偎依) together there.Gus snapped a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife,Katie Kiebel.
Then he dialed the number from the dogs’ tags.A man answered and immediately grew defensive when Gus told him why he was calling.“I gave those dogs away,” the man said.“They’re not mine anymore.” The man hung up.
These beagles—who looked ragged and uncared for—were abandoned, then. No home at all in this world.Gus looked over at them, and then he called Katie.

Passage1
AsMelandotherclimbersmadetheirwaydown,Iyelledforhelp. They immediately came to assist me and called the Mountain Rescue.Mel stayed by my side while I tried not to cry from the pain.I’d been lying on the ice shivering for four hours by the time the rescuers reached me.They strapped me into a sled and pulled me down the mountain.I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but I screamed with each bounce. At the bottom of Mount Hood,I was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital.
ThedoctorstoldmeitwouldbeayearbeforeIcouldclimbagain, butIwasbackonthetrailswithinsixmonths. The fall has made me more cautious. One slip on a mountain can change everything. But the experience also made me grow as a person. There was a lot of media attention following the accident.Strangers commented on the videos, saying I’d put others in danger.I think handling all that at such a young age helped me mature.Since the accident,I’ve climbed another 60 mountains.I’m not going to let one fall keep me from doing my favorite thing in the world.
Passage2
“Youcannotputthembackinthesnow,”shesaid.“Bringthemhome.”The Kiebels prepared a bed for the dogs on their warm enclosed porch, and laid out food and water. The exhausted animals lay together,Cooper, the male, periodically lifting his head to fuss over Pepper.Although Gus had dreamed of owning beagles as a boy and keeping this pair was out of the question, the Kiebels already had a dog.But he knew someone at a no-kill shelter, the League for Animal Welfare.
Thenextday,Katietookthedogstothesheltertodropthemoff.“I’m not signing the dogs over to you if you’re going to separate them,” she said. The shelter workers promised her they’d keep the couple together. In the days following,Katie phoned the shelter repeatedly to check up on Pepper and Cooper.Soon after Christmas, the beagles were adopted—as a pair,to a loving family. The news came as a great relief to Katie and Gus.The kindhearted couple gave shelter to an abandoned dog couple, which speaks to the best of our nature. When kindness and love get the better of cruelty and neglect,it can feel like the greatest miracle of all.

Passage1
Today we talk about what happens when a big animal runs loose in a small area. The expression is to be “a bull in a china shop”.
China is fragile, meaning very easy to break.Imagine a large bull running loose in a china shop. All the fragile plates, bowls, and tea cups in the shop would be on the floor and broken in a million pieces. 1 Wherever they go,they create a mess.
This can happen on purpose or by accident. If you are behaving wildly in a small space and are breaking things here and there, you are acting like a bull in a china shop. 2 Maybe you are just very big or your body movements are not very graceful.
3 When a person feels out of place and deals too roughly with a delicate problem, they can say they feel like a bull in a china shop.
This expression can also mean you handle a delicate situation badly. 4 Instead you add fuel to the fire. This means you make the situation worse.
It is widely believed that this expression came from real animals causing real damage at outdoor markets in the 1800s.Word expert says that many languages have a similar expression, but maybe they use a different animal, for example an elephant. 5
A.But maybe you don’t mean to.
B.You don’t react calmly and carefully.
C.This expression is used in other ways.
D.This expression can describe a person or a situation.
E.And an elephant would also do a lot of damage in a china shop.
F.So,when you act like a bull in a china shop, you create damage.
G.So the expression describes a person who is awkward and clumsy.
Passage2
Gardening requires a lot of physical labor. The activity can extend from light exercise to heavy labor. All that bending, lifting, digging, carrying and moving burns calories and builds muscles.
But it can also injure the body. 1 Even the strongest and healthiest of gardeners can hurt themselves. For people who are less physically fit or who have health conditions that limit movement or cause pain, gardening may seem impossible. But there are ways to grow plants that are gentle on the body.
Taking simple care in the way you lift and carry the objects you need can prevent injury. 2 You can stand with your feet as far apart as your shoulders to keep your balance. If bending at all is too difficult,or if you garden while seated, grow plants in raised beds that are as tall as your chair or the middle part of your body.
Use wheelbarrows(手推车) to transport heavy supplies. It is easy to overestimate your ability to carry heavy loads. 3 When you carry weight on your own, hold heavy objects to your chest, keeping your back as straight as possible.Plant containers can be very heavy. It is best to set them where you want them before you fill them.
4 You also can use pads to protect your knees. If you have hand pain or difficulty holding onto things, many tools now come with improved grips(手柄).You can also update your existing tools with grips and wraps made to fit them.
Most importantly, take it slow and easy. 5
A.The result can lead to injury.
B.That lessens the work a great deal.
C.Move around on a garden seat with wheels.
D.Limit gardening periods to between 60 and 90 minutes.
E.Remember to bend at the knees when lifting heavy bags.
F.A gardener’s back can start to hurt and so can their knees.
G.A few minutes of gentle stretching helps to prepare muscles for work.
Passage3
The holiday season is a time for celebrating with friends and family. It is often called the “giving season” because during the holidays people give gifts and have celebrations. 1 However, there are ways to reduce the amount of waste you create.
The concerns about paper waste have caused many people to look at other choices for wrapping a present. You can use reusable bags for gifts.Keep gift bags and other decorations that you receive. 2 You can also wrap gifts in old maps, pages from magazines, and art paper. The person receiving the gift could use the wrapping for something else.
For many people, sending holiday cards is a tradition. However, now many people use digital,or electronic cards. There are so many digital options now. 3 Those who want to send traditional cards might choose ones printed on recyclable paper.
For decorating the home, experts again say people should think of reusing and recycling. 4 One expert suggests using old holiday cards as decorations. If you use holidays lights and they are old, experts suggest using newer energy-saving types of lights.
If people want a Christmas tree, the question is often fake or real The greener choice would be buying a real Christmas tree from a local farm. The trees are grown for the purpose of being cut,and new ones are typically replanted every year. 5
When having a celebration, avoid single-use plastics. If single-use seems unavoidable, choose ones that are made from things like bamboo. And donate your unused food to an organization that helps those in need.
A.So the cycle continues.
B.People get just as much joy out of it.
C.This is where gifts are wrapped in cloth.
D.Unfortunately, this can lead to a lot of waste.

Passage4
When we are struggling, when we have a hard time focusing,or when we have a hard time in general,we may turn to others for help. 1 Well, today we offer you some advice.
2 That is the idea behind Kendra Levin’s self-help book TheHeroIsYou.When you make yourself the hero of your own life, you not only gain focus but also purpose.
Levin based her idea on the teachings of American writer Joseph Campbell and his Hero’sJourney.Campbell studied stories from many different time periods and many different cultures. He found that many stories had something in common:a hero who goes on a journey. 3
Making ourselves the hero in our own story helps us in many ways. For one,it can give us hope as stories often do. 4 We love stories because stories are all about hope and the belief that after something bad happens to you,you get some value out of it.
It’s important and valuable for all of us to see ourselves as heroes on a journey. And the reason for that is that we need to have a sense of purpose. We need to have a sense that what we’re doing matters and that it’s leading towards something. 5
It’s really important and valuable to use the hero’s journey as a tool for seeing yourself as a hero and seeing this moment in your life as just that—a moment, rather than this is just how life is going to be forever.
A.Turn yourself into your own hero!
B.We may even wish we had a hero to help us.
C.That’s one of the reasons that we love stories.
D.Our life’s journey is ongoing and ever-changing.
E.This can be a powerful tool for anyone facing a difficult time.
F.Levin reminds us that the hero’s journey is not a one-time thing.
G.The hero overcomes a great challenge and comes home changed for the better.
Passage5
The aging process affects the human body in many ways. One thing that happens to all of us as we age is muscle loss. Some experts say muscle loss begins around age 50.But others say it can start as early as age 30.Experts may not know exactly when muscles loss starts. 1
Now,the good news!Lost muscles are not gone forever.Although muscle loss may be a natural part of aging, you can do some things to slow it down.It is better to start building muscles when you are younger and in good health. 2
But what exactly is “strength training” Simply put, strength training is any activity that makes one’s muscles stronger. But let us first talk about some of the health benefits of strength training.
Develop strong bones.Strength training puts pressure on your bones. 3 This pressure can increase the thickness or density of bones. This can reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis—a disease that weakens bones, making them easy to break.
Manage your weight.Strength training can help you to take control of your weight and even lose weight. 4 But muscle increases your metabolism, and a higher metabolism helps you burn more calories.
Improve your quality of life.Strength training can improve your ability to do everyday activities. For example, having stronger muscles makes it easier to lift and move things. 5 So,your risk of falling or getting injured may be lessened. As we age, this can greatly add to your quality of life.Regular strength training, when combined with other kinds of exercise, may help older adults think and learn better.
A.And that is a good thing.
B.Muscle weighs more than fat.
C.And give your muscles time to recover.
D.Strong muscles can improve your balance.
E.But it is never too late to start strength training.
F.The experts suggest warming up before strength training.
G.But they do know that being inactive can speed up the process.

Passage1
文章介绍了abullinachinashop(牛闯瓷器店)这个典故的使用语境及其由来。

moveforward“前进”;lookforward“盼望”;putforward“提出”;pushforward“推进;加紧进行”。
atrandom“随机地”;ingeneral“总体来说”;asusual“像往常一样”;bychance“碰巧;偶然”。
rare“少有的;罕见的”;valuable“有价值的”;strange“奇怪的”;superior“更好的;占优势的”。
vital“必不可少的;极其重要的”;available“可得到的;可利用的”;worthwhile“有价值的”;meaningful“有意义的”。

Ask the new artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT to write about the cause of the American Civil War and you can watch it produce a school report in just a few seconds. The technology is so good that it can write sentences like ones written by a human. And it is also free.
The tool has been in use since November. But it is already raising tough questions about the future of AI in education, the tech industry, and a number of professions.

ChatGPT launched last November and it is part of a new generation of AI systems that can have a discussion and create written work.It can even produce new images and videos based on what it has learned from a large database of digital books, online writings and other media.
ChatGPT is also designed to be more user-friendly.It works like a written conversation between the AI system and the person asking it questions.
Like similar systems,ChatGPT can produce strong writing. But that does not mean what it says is factual or makes sense.
Its launch came with little guidance for how to use it.But the program will admit when it is wrong. It will also question “incorrect premises” and reject requests meant to bring about offensive(冒犯的) answers.
Many school systems in the U.S.are still deciding how to set policies on the use of AI programs and how they can be used.

Seeing the disappointment on his daughter’s face because,at 400 pounds, her dad couldn’t play with her,was the fuel one father needed to turn his life around after 25 years.
In 1994,Murphy was violently attacked by three men.It took him seven months to recover from his injuries, including relearning how to walk.
“I used that as an excuse to be lazy,”he said.“Over the years,I ate a lot and drank a lot and put on a lot of weight.”
Over the next two decades,Murphy gained 200 pounds, drank nearly every day and struggled with PTSD from the attack.“I hid it for almost 25 years.I looked like the happy guy at the pub.But I was drinking to escape,” he said.“And then she came along.”
The birth of his daughter,Chloe,in 2014 sparked a desire to turn his life around.Murphy went to a nearby gym.But just 20 minutes after getting on a treadmill,he heard two men mocking him, saying the back of his neck looked like “a pack of sausages”.Serious anxiety from his PTSD made him give up and go home.
Four years later,in 2018,Murphy was leaving a playground with Chloe when she asked him to race her home.

Passage3
Growing up,Pittsburgh native Judy Baumgartner saw big plastic pipes from industrial plants going into the Ohio River. This was during the 1960s and 1970s,when industrial plants still dominated the city’s waterfront.Pittsburgh’s steel, coal and other industries had long sustained the local economy, but they also released pollution into the water.
Many of those industries have largely disappeared now.Baumgartner assumed the Ohio River was in good health.
The river is much healthier than it was 50 years ago.Congress passed groundbreaking legislation, the Clean Water Act,in 1972,which helped to clean up polluted waterways like the Ohio River.
But the river—which supplies drinking water to 5 million people and is home to more than 150 species of fish—is still under threat, according to a report released this week from the conservation advocacy organization American Rivers.
For nearly four decades,American Rivers has been identifying the most endangered rivers in the U.S. and creates its annual list. This year, the report lists 10 rivers as endangered.A section of the Colorado River, which flows through Grand Canyon National Park,is the most endangered river in the country.
The Colorado River supplies millions of people throughout the West with water for drinking and agriculture.Prolonged drought worsened by climate change, however, has left the river’s reservoirs insecurely low. That means there’s less water to send past Glen Canyon Dam and into the Colorado River, which flows through the Grand Canyon.
Just like the Colorado River, climate change also threatens the Ohio River, along with legacy pollution and new industrial pollution.
Protecting this precious resource is essential. The organization is calling on Congress to designate(指定) the Ohio River as a federally protected water system, which would help fund its restoration.Protecting the Ohio River should be a priority because it will become an even more crucial freshwater source as other parts of the country, like the West and Southwest, struggle with water scarcity and drought.
1.What does the author want to show by telling the story of Judy Baumgartner
A.Judy thought the Ohio River was in good health in the past.
B.Industrial factories were major contributors to pollution.
C.The Ohio River was seriously polluted but now it’s better.
D.Industrial development has both advantages and disadvantages.
2.What is the root cause of the Colorado River’s being endangered
A.Legacy pollution.
B.Its reservoirs’ low levels.
C.New industrial pollution.
D.Acute shortage of rainfall.
3.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.The Ohio River is important to the whole country.
B.The whole country is suffering from lack of water.
C.The Ohio River is a federally protected water system.
D.There will be a special fund to restore the Ohio River.
4.What is the text mainly about
A.The annual list of the most endangered rivers.
B.Protecting the Ohio River should be a priority.
C.There is no delay in protecting the Colorado and Ohio rivers.
D.The Colorado and Ohio rivers are among the most endangered.

Passage2
Previous studies have shown that drinking moderate(适度的) amounts of alcohol might have some health benefits—but a new study published in JAMA Network Open suggests that might not be the case after all.
Researchers from the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria reviewed 107 studies published between January 1980 and July 2021 that involved 4.8 million participants.
They found that drinkers who consumed less than an ounce of ethanol(酒精)—the form of alcohol found in beer, wine and liquor—showed no significant increase in lifespan compared to non-drinkers.
“The paper provides further evidence that the idea there are health benefits from moderate alcohol use is not based on strong science,” said lead researcher Dr.Tim Stockwell,a professor at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research,University of Victoria.
A surprisingly large number of studies in the review contained serious errors, the doctor noted.“These studies make people who continue to drink appear healthy by comparison with people who stop drinking for health reasons,” he said.“Doctors should not advise their patients to drink for health reasons.”
Dr.Chris Tuell, clinical director of addiction services at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, was not involved in the study but said the findings were not surprising.“No amount of alcohol is good for you,” he said.
“The studies that have indicated that one or two drinks can prevent strokes are not true,” the doctor stated.“Blood pressure and stroke risk rise steadily if people drink more alcohol.” The effects of alcohol use are impacted by many factors,Dr.Tuell noted.
Those include a person’s genetics, the body’s water content, the metabolism(新陈代谢) of alcohol in the body and any mental health issues.
“A small amount of alcohol can be just as problematic for some people, especially if alcohol has been a ‘go-to’ coping mechanism(途径) for life stressors,” he explained.
The doctor added that some people are more susceptible because of genetics,so the amount one person drinks could affect that person much differently than it would affect someone else.
1.What’s the negative effect of the errors in the review
A.Doctors will advise their patients to drink more.
B.People wrongly believe drinking alcohol is healthier.
C.People who continue to drink look better.
D.People will stop drinking for health reasons.
2.What will Dr.Chris Tuell suggest people do
A.Take alcohol to relieve stress.
B.Keep moderate alcohol intake.
C.Try one or two drinks every day.
D.Don’t drink any amount of alcohol.
3.What does the underlined word “susceptible” mean in the last paragraph
A.Fond of drinking.
B.Sick of alcohol.
C.Likely to be affected.
D.Energetic with alcohol.
4.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.The Less You Drink, the Healthier You Are
B.There’s More to Drinking than Its Health Benefits
C.The Amount of Alcohol Affects Different People Differently
D.Drinking a Little Alcohol Every Day Won’t Help You Live Longer
Passage3
When students think about college classes in the United States, they often think about the ones that will result in a degree. However, most American universities permit students to take several classes called “electives” outside of their study program,or major. In fact, most universities require students to take elective classes in order to gain general knowledge.
At the University of North Dakota’s medical school, students studying to be doctors can take Jeremy Holloway’s class called “Legacy Building with Older Adults”.Holloway’s class helps medical students make connections with elderly people by setting up in-person conversations. He wants to help young students learn to see people first and not think of them as their job positions or titles, such as doctor, nurse or professor.
At Indiana University,Robert Kunzman teaches about learning from failure. The class is called “Failure:How We Can Learn from It”.He believes taking a class outside of their main study program is a good way to “broaden their horizons and ways of thinking about the world”.
The course tells students how people in many different professions learn from failure.Kunzman said,“I think that what’s important is to develop a capacity to make good judgments,to make good decisions about the chances that we take, and to develop strategies that allow us to learn from the times when we fail, when things don’t work out.”
Kunzman agrees with Holloway, who said,“There’s a need for these kinds of experiences.” They believe students cannot get a full education by only taking the courses that are required for their major.
Sometimes,Kunzman said,it is hard for students to understand it might be good to make time for an elective. After all, many feel pressure to finish school and start working. But,he noted, the educational experience can be “supplemented and supported by courses that allow the student to think about questions that are important to having a meaningful career and a long-term impact on their society and themselves.”
1.Why do students in most universities take electives
A.To get their college degree.
B.To improve their study program.
C.To acquire common knowledge.
D.To better understand their major.
2.What do you think of the purpose of Holloway’s class
A.To lead his students to visit the elderly frequently.
B.To teach medical students how to treat the elderly.
C.To create as many job positions or titles as possible.
D.To teach future doctors how to talk with elderly people.
3.What does Robert Kunzman do in his class
A.Giving students the chance to make right decisions.
B.Helping students develop a capacity to make judgments.
C.Discussing risk and failure in life with the students.
D.Encouraging students to stand out in different professions.
4.What does the last paragraph mean
A.The end goal of the elective classes.
B.The pressure of the students to finish school.
C.The importance of having a meaningful career.
D.The agreement between Kunzman and Holloway.
