“You need to sign this,” my son Joe informed me. “What is it ” I asked. Rolling his eyes with a sense of impatience, Joe replied, “Your permission. And it’s due tomorrow!”
I learned that Joe’s sixth-grade class would be taking a field trip to the state capital. “That sounds like fun,” I said. “I’ve always wanted to go there.” “You can’t come!” Joe answered. Puzzled, I asked. “Why not ” “Because you always come on field trips!”
Of course, I always joined his class on field trips. Being a chaperone (监护人)on a field trip is one of the advantages that comes with being a mom, a vacation day in a career that offers few opportunities for a change of scenery. “You don’t want me to be a chaperone ” “Give someone else’s mom a chance,” he suggested. What was surprising was how much I minded being so impolitely removed from the short list of willing chaperones by my own son.
When Joe was in kindergarten, his class planned a pretend trip to Norway. The day before the trip, Joe woke up not feeling well.
After learning that he didn’t have a fever, I asked, “You don’t want to miss getting ready for the trip to Norway, do you ” “I guess not,” he said.
But when I picked him up at the end of the day, the teacher whispered, “Joe got a little upset today.” “What happened ” “He doesn’t want to go to Norway without you.” So that was what had been bothering my 5-year-old. He thought his class was really flying to Norway on their wooden chairs in their paper airplane. He believed those passports and tickets he and his classmates had been making were the real deal.
Preadolescence fell upon my family as my husband and I found ourselves preparing for our son’s upcoming teen years with the same trepidation as someone about to climb an ice-covered mountain wearing high heeled-shoes.
Joe needed to take a field trip without me accompanying him. And I needed to let him. I’m glad he doesn’t need me all the time.

A.Excitement. B.Nervousness. C.Expectation. D.Impatience.
27.Which of the following statements will the author agree with

When you see a slim tower topping out at 14 feet 6 inches (4.4m) and made up of 208 decks of cards, you may exclaim it’s so incredible!
The tower’s architect, Bryan Berg, is an expert card builder, holding the world’s record for the tallest structure built entirely of paper cards. He’s built houses, stadiums, capitols, and castles. There’s no glue, tape or clips (别针). How can he make them stand firm He begins by balancing four cards to form a box with arms sticking out, which forms a grid (网格). Then he repeats the grid over and over, expanding outward, to build a solid base. After that, Bryan lays cards around the edge and then across the top to make the floor for the next story of the building.
Interestingly enough, Bryan did not get the idea from any of the physical books. Instead, he discovered the unique way to build solid structures using a trick from nature. The secret is plant cells. Plant cells have hard walls and fit together tightly to form a grid that helps leaves and stems to keep their shape. Bees use the same kind of pattern to create honeycombs. Bryan borrowed this idea to invent repeating grids of card cells.
Out of curiosity, people who come to see the card buildings sometimes push and poke (戳刺) to see if they have clips inside, but find they don’t! Once, when Bryan built a card castle at Disney World, birds kept trying to land on it. A squirrel managed to take down one wall and did plenty of damage inside. But, amazingly, the castle didn’t collapse.
When it’s time to take down a card house, Bryan likes to blow them apart with a leaf blower. Is he ever sad to do it Bryan admits it’s sometimes painful to see his structures fall. But he always knows one thing: “What goes up must come down — even card houses. They wouldn’t be so special if they were permanent. I also learn a lot from taking them apart — the destruction shows me where the weak points are. That is what my next stronger buildings really need.”
28.What makes Bryan’s card buildings stand firm
A.Fixed clips. B.Repeating grids.
C.Light-weight cards. D.Multiple stories.
29.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.The source of Bryan’s inspiration.
B.Bryan’s specific building process.
C.Bryan’s comprehensive knowledge of biology.
D.The similarity between plant cells and honeycombs.
30.Why is the Disney card castle mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To arouse people’s interest in visiting.
B.To prove the strength of Bryan’s card works.
C.To indicate Bryan’s popularity among children.
D.To show the harmony between man and nature.
31.What life philosophy does Bryan convey in the last paragraph
A.Pride comes before a fall.
B.It’s unrealistic to achieve perfection.
C.One can better himself by going beyond himself.
D.Nothing is difficult for one who sets his mind to it.

During the industrial age, when high school was key to the American dream, public-school systems covered the costs of earning a diploma. Today, however, ns college degrees have replaced high-school diplomas as the ticket into the middle class, families are forced to cover the costs of higher education and more. If the information-age economy demands a workforce with higher education, the US government needs to make the same deal with students and their families: Anyone willing to work hard and earn the degree should be able to attend college—for free.
With that basic bargain in mind, Michigan has lately joined Oregon, Rhode Island and Tennessee in experimenting with ways to make community college free. Under the terms of the Chicago Star Scholarship, a program that has already enrolled more than 6,000 students, if a student at a public high school in Michigan maintains a B average, the state will provide a free degree at a local community college. Then, through another program Chicago Star Plus, students who have scored 3.0 GPA are qualified to receive a tuition discount at 18 of the four-year colleges located in Michigan.
Chicago Star Scholarship and Chicago Star Plus are already changing young lives. Its high-school graduation rate grew from 56.9 percent in 2011 to 78.2 percent in 2022. And Chicago Star Plus’ college attending rate is 86 percent, well above the national average of 62.7 percent.
More than a century ago, America achieved an explosion of social mobility by creating a supportive public school system that runs to 12th grade. By adding community colleges to the nation’s public-school systems and educational requirements, we can strengthen the belief in the American dream again.
32.What does the author suggest the US government do today
A.Cancel all college students’ debts.
B.Reduce the costs for the middle class.
C.Provide free higher education for qualified students.
D.Help poor families to cover the fees of higher education.

A.Any student who has achieved 3.0 GPA.
B.All public high school students in Michigan.
C.All students admitted into the 18 four-year colleges.
D.Any Michigan public high schooler who maintains a B average.
34.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.The significance of the programs in Michigan. B.The high dropout rate in the US colleges.
C.The potential costs of Chicago Star Plus. D.The popularization of higher education in the US.
35.How is the text mainly developed
A.By analyzing data.
B.By listing examples.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By conducting surveys.

I was 18 years old, living with my parents in a countryside 18 miles outside of Durban, South Africa. We were far from the town and had no neighbors, so I would always look forward to going to town to visit friends or watch movies.
One day, my father asked me to drive him to town for an all-day conference, and I jumped at the chance. Since I would stay in the town for a whole day, my mother gave me a list of groceries she needed and my father asked me to get the car serviced. When I dropped my father off that morning, he said, “I will meet you here at 5:00 p.m., and then we will go home together.”
After hurriedly completing everything my parents had told me, I dined with friends merrily and we went to the nearest movie theatre at around 3:30 p.m.. I got so absorbed in John Wayne’s latest movie that I totally forgot the time. It was not until at 5:30 p.m. that I suddenly recalled the appointment with my father in the morning. I ran to the garage to pick up the car and hurried to the place where my father was waiting for me. When I arrived at the appointed place, it was almost 6:00 p.m.. He asked me in an anxious tone, “Why are you late ” So ashamed was I that I didn’t dare to tell him the truth and I murmured, “The car wasn’t ready before 5:00 p.m, so I had to wait,” not realizing that he had already called the garage.
I was ready to be scolded in the face when he caught me lying. To my surprise, however, he said calmly, “There must be something wrong with the way I brought you up. I haven’t given you the courage to tell the truth.” Then he was lost in thought.

You need to sign this,” my son Joe informed me.
24.What did the author really mind
A.Taking additional responsibility as a mom.
B.Being asked by her son to sign a permission.
C.Getting refused rudely by her son as a chaperone.
D.Having missed the chance to visit the state capital.
25.What made Joe upset when he was five years old
A.The loss of his passport and ticket. B.His going to Norway without his mom.
C.His realization of the fake trip to Norway. D.The attack of a fever before the journey.
26.What does the underlined word “trepidation” in Paragraph 7 probably mean
A.Excitement. B.Nervousness. C.Expectation. D.Impatience.
27.Which of the following statements will the author agree with
A.Bravery never goes out of fashion. B.No legacy is so rich as honesty.
C.Independence is the foundation of life. D.Children have more need of models than critics.

根据第六段中“He doesn’t want to go to Norway without you.(没有你,他不想去挪威。)”
根据倒数第二段中“someone about to climb an ice-covered mountain wearing high heeled-shoes. (有人穿着高的鞋子要爬上一座冰覆盖的山。)”可知,爬山的人是恐惧的;固定短语:the same……as…“与……是相同的”。由此推知,划线词的意思是“恐惧,惊恐”。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Joe needed to take a field trip without me accompanying him. And I needed to let him. I’m glad he doesn’t need me all the time.(乔需要在没有我陪伴的情况下进行一次实地考察。我需要让他这么做。我很高兴他不需要我。)”可知,作者同意“独立是人生的基础。”故选C。

(2023·山西太原·统考一模)When you see a slim tower topping out at 14 feet 6 inches (4.4m) and made up of 208 decks of cards, you may exclaim it’s so incredible!

A.To arouse people’s interest in visiting.
B.To prove the strength of Bryan’s card works.

31.What life philosophy does Bryan convey in the last paragraph
A.Pride comes before a fall.
B.It’s unrealistic to achieve perfection.

根据第三段中“Interestingly enough, Bryan did not get the idea from any of the physical books. Instead, he discovered the unique way to build solid structures using a trick from nature. The secret is plant cells. Plant cells have hard walls and fit together tightly to form a grid that helps leaves and stems to keep their shape. Bees use the same kind of pattern to create honeycombs. Bryan borrowed this idea to invent repeating grids of card cells.(有趣的是,布莱恩并没有从任何一本实体书中得到这个想法。相反,他发现了利用大自然的技巧建造坚固结构的独特方法。秘密在于植物细胞。植物细胞有坚硬的细胞壁,紧密地结合在一起形成网格,帮助叶子和茎保持形状。蜜蜂用同样的模式来建造蜂巢。布莱恩借鉴了这个想法,发明了重复的纸牌单元格)”可知,本段主要讲述了布莱恩搭建稳固结构灵感的来源。故选A项。

(2023·山西·校联考二模)During the industrial age, when high school was key to the American dream, public-school systems covered the costs of earning a diploma.

34.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.The significance of the programs in Michigan. B.The high dropout rate in the US colleges.
C.The potential costs of Chicago Star Plus. D.The popularization of higher education in the US.
35.How is the text mainly developed
A.By analyzing data.

The 13th United Nations Chinese Language Day,为物,故使用which。故填which。

故填to promote。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
There was dead silence in the car on the way home.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After I heard my father’s words, tears of regret rolled down on my face.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
There was dead silence in the car on the way home. I knew my father was angry, but I didn't expect him to be so calm about it. I kept looking out the window, feeling increasingly guilty about what I had done. After a while, he broke the silence and said, "Son, we all make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from them and not repeat them again. I know you're a good kid, and I'm sure you'll do better in the future."
After I heard my father’s words, tears of regret rolled down on my face. I realized that my father was not angry with me, but disappointed that I had not told him the truth. His words stayed with me, and I knew that I had learned an invaluable lesson that day. I decided then and there that I would never again be late for an appointment and that I would always tell the truth, no matter what the consequences were.

②了解、知道:know/learn/recognize/realize

33.Who can receive the Chicago Star Scholarship
