When starting college, most students enjoy a week’s stay on campus before classes actually begin. What should you do with that time Below are several tips to ease yourself into college life.
Participating in Campus Welcome Activities
Most universities hold welcome events before the academic year officially begins, including freshmen orientations, campus picnics, and entertainments like concerts.
Participating in such events is a great way to learn about school facilities and understand campus culture: What do students do for fun What are their favorite classes What is the history of your university It can help you observe campus life outside the classroom.
Exploring Campus
Getting to know where essential campus resources are—such as the student advising center, psychological services, and the tutoring center—will make your first few weeks on campus a lot easier, because you won't have to look for them while still getting used to your classes.
Take some time to check out the buildings where your classes will be held. This will prevent you from getting lost in the first few days of classes, and familiarize you with how long it takes to get from place to place. If you’re worried about taking classes one after another in different buildings, a quick test run won’t hurt. That way, you will avoid potential time delays in getting to your classes.
Starting a Routine
Before getting too excited about all of the fun things you will be able to do during the week, remember that you do have a pretty big schedule change coming up. Starting classes means being in different places at different times, so it’s a great idea to start getting used to that routine right this week.
What helps you most is to schedule your sleep. Following the planned time will ensure you have enough sleep to get to those early classes and stay wide awake.
If you have other daily routines, such as exercising or talking on the phone with family, work those into your day-to-day life before classes start so that you get a better idea of how they fit in with your schedule.
1. By participating in campus welcome activities, freshmen can_______.
A. learn about campus culture B. get their course schedule
C. have a physical examination D. take an entrance test
2. Why are freshmen advised to have a quick test run between buildings
A. To see how many facilities they can use. B. To avoid being late for future classes.
C. To help those getting lost on campus. D. To practice running on their way to class.
3. When is it best for freshmen to start getting used to the new routine
A. On the first day of their classes. B. Before the orientation week.
C. After their first-day classes. D. During the orientation week.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To offer some tips on making an easier start at college.

The winter break is just about to end. Soon we will be back at school. It’s with both happiness and sadness. I look very much forward to seeing my friends and starting practice again, but it also means I’m officially(正式地) half way through the exchange year. With school starting there are new things to try out and experience. For example I’m starting a new sport, Track. It’s similar to Cross Country, which I did from August till November.
Being here for half a year now I can easily tell the differences between my two schools. The hardest or most different part for me was to have the same schedule every day here. Honestly, I prefer to have different classes every day, as I did in my home country. However, I have fallen in love with the Friday football games. Football is one of my favorite sports now. Before I came, I knew nothing about it. Now I love it, especially to watch it with my host parents. I have also been so lucky to go to two college football games.
Before I left school in December, I had a couple of tests called Mid-term Test. They all went pretty smooth, mostly because I didn’t have too many hard classes. My favorite class was English, and also my hardest. Personally I really liked English, where I could write essays(文章), challenge writing skills and improve English talking.
Only four days of winter break is left. A part of me wants to be on a break forever, and the other part expects to get started again, start a new sport and see my friends and classmates.
5. Why does the author feel sad before school starts again
A. Her homework is not finished. B. The exchange year will end soon.
C. Her school life will get harder. D. The new sport no longer attracts her.
6. How does the school in the author’s home country differ from the one she is in now
A. The courses are richer. B. The teachers are kinder.
C. The meals are healthier. D. The holidays are longer.
7. What does the author enjoy doing most with the host family
A. Having a talk in English. B. Playing video games.
C. Watching football matches. D. Visiting her relatives.
8. What does the underlined word “They” in the third paragraph refer to
A. Classes. B. Tests. C. Games. D. Students.

C
As a child growing up in a suburban town in the Northeast of the United States, the arrival of spring had little meaning for me. Sure, we had a weeklong spring vocation from school, but the key word there was vacation, not spring.
For the kids in my neighborhood, the arrival of spring was a non-event. There were two important seasons: winter, when we could go skating and sledding or build snow forts, and summer, when we could finally make proper use of the beach about 100 meter east of my family home. Spring and autumn were just technical details, weeks and weeks of waiting for the good times’ return.
Admittedly, spring later developed its own attractions for me- “In the spring a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love”, as the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson noted-however, it was not spring itself, but the other stuff bat got my attention.
In short, I never thought much at all about spring.... and then I arrived in China. I had been in Beijing for about three months when my first Spring Festival rolled around, and it could hardly be ignored. Aside from the random bursts of fireworks at any time day or night, what stood out most for me was that the capital seemed to be empty.
It was as though the crowds and streams of cars and trucks commonly seen in the capital had all gone into hiding. My puzzlement cleared up when I returned to work. My colleagues explained that Chinese traditionally travel, if necessary, to visit their families during Spring Festival, and that many Beijingers were not natives of the capital.
I also got my first knowledge of something about Spring Festival that never ceases to amaze me. Regardless of when the holiday is set to begin, there is an almost immediate and sudden change for the better in the weather. Spring really does arrive.
I can’t begin to figure out how the ancient Chinese could create a system that would almost always accurately predict when the season would shift year after year after year. But they did.
9. What did the author think of spring as a child
A. It was a season full of promise. B. It was always beyond his imagination.
C. It was a tiring and long holiday. D. It hardly left a good impression on him.
10. What impressed the author most about Beijing during the Spring Festival
A. The busy traffic. B. The unexpected quietness.
C. Beijingers’ love for travel. D. Occasional bursts of fireworks.
11. How does the author feel about the system created by ancient Chinese
A. Adorable. B. Confused. C. Wonderful. D. Convenient.
12. What can be inferred from the text
A. Spring Festival in Beijing will make one feel quite lonely.
B. The author spent his first Spring Festival at a colleague’s home.
C. In China Spring Festival always indicates the coming of Spring.
D. The author still worked during the Spring Festival while in Beijing.
【答案】9. D 10. B 11. C 12. C

(当我第一个春节到来时,我已经在北京待了大约三个月了,这个春节几乎不能被忽视。除了白天或晚上任何时候随机爆发的烟花,最让我印象深刻的是首都似乎空荡荡的。)”和第五段“It was as though the crowds and streams of cars and trucks commonly seen in the capital had all gone into hiding. It is a book about friendship, loyalty and teamwork. It will make you laugh and cry and give you hope.
Co-written by Jessica Kensky and her husband Patrick Downes, the picture book, Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship, tells the story of a girl named Jessica who is dealing with the loss of her legs. Rescue, her service dog, discovers that he can be a good friend and help Jessica get through hard times.
The book is illustrated by Scott Magoon, whose drawings show how Rescue works alongside Jessica. “He can pick up the phone and bring it to her if she needs it,” Magoon said. “He can even open doors for her or call for help if she is in trouble. ”
The story doesn't discuss the bomb attack at the Boston Marathon, which took place at the finish line, killing three people and injuring hundreds of others. But readers learn in the authors' note that Downes and Kensky are among those injured. Kensky lost both legs and Downes lost his left leg.
It took two years to write the book, and two more to publish it. “The best part was having a good distraction (分散注意力的事) from the really hard times I was having during my recovery, ”Kensky said.
Downes described how Rescue helped them. “When we’re sad, he makes funny sounds and makes us laugh, ” Downes said. “He is also there to help us celebrate good times. If you have a friend, though things might be hard, you can conquer them together. ”
Downes and Kensky and their picture book stand for “Boston Strong”. Downes explained the term, “It brought people together after the bombing and brought out the best in everyone. When people needed it the most, we took care of each other. ”

Last Saturday, Jordon was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about seven years old. When Jordon passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are! You are good at nothing. ”Jordon stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
Jordon was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Mary in middle school. He was often told that he was good at nothing. But one day it all changed. One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Mary asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later, Jordon handed in his story. But the next day to his surprise, the comment (评价) “well done” from Mrs Mary came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When Jordon read that, he almost burst into tears. That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Mary the next morning. And again he was praised.
Jordon became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Mary to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Mary always corrected them for him and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, he was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published and became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Mary's encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid. She said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at them, Jordon felt relieved, hoping he could make some difference to the boy.

8. What does the underlined word “They” in the third paragraph refer to
A. Classes. B. Tests. C. Games. D. Students.
