Whether it is "arguing until one is blue in the face" or "feeling green with envy", the English language is full of idioms linking color to emotion. Now for the first time, scientists have shown that people actually do change colors depending on their feelings, although it is a small change to skin tone around the nose, eyebrows, cheeks or chin. The effects are picked up subconsciously(下意识地) by observers, making it very hard to hide emotions.
The scientists believe the changes of colors are caused by blood flow channeled from the central nervous system depending on our state of mind. "We identified patterns of facial coloring that are unique to every Lemotion we studied," said Aleix Martinez, a cognitive scientist and professor at The Ohio State University. "We believe these color patterns are due to small changes in blood flow or blood composition brought about by the central nervous system. We use them to correctly identify how other people are feeling whether we do it consciously(有意识地) or not."
For the study, the researchers first took hundreds of pictures of facial expressions and separated the images into different color channels that correspond to how human eyes see color—either in a red/green channel or blue/yellow. They then ran the images through computer analysis and found that emotions, such as "happy", "sad", "anger" or "dislike", all formed unique color patterns. "Dislike", for example, creates a blue-yellow cast around the lips, but with a red-green cast around the nose and forehead. Happiness is seen in red at the cheeks and a little blue around the chin, but the same face with a slightly redder forehead and a slightly less blue chin registers as "surprised."
To test whether colors alone could convey emotions—without smiles or frowns(皱眉) to go along with them―the researchers then put together the different emotional color patterns on pictures of faces with neutral expressions. They found that volunteers were able to spot an emotion up to 75 percent of the time. The effect remained regardless of gender, race or overall skin tone.
24. The phrase "arguing until one is blue in the face" is used in Paragraph 1 to _____.
A. explain a phenomenon B. introduce the topic
C. support an argument D. make comparisons
25. What directly causes patterns of facial coloring according to Aleix Martinez
A. Delicate changes in blood. B. Every separate emotion.
C. The central nervous system. D. Conscious self-identification.
26. What can be learned from the text
A. Colors alone could not convey emotions.
B. Each emotion produces a unique color pattern.
C. Observers have difficulty identifying people's emotions.
D. The emotion "dislike" just shows a blue-yellow cast around the lips.
27. What is the text
A. A news report. B. A book review.
C. An educational speech. D. A research article.

Intelligence is traditionally viewed as the ability to think and learn. Yet in a complex world, there's another set of cognitive(认知的) skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink. Therefore, my aim in this book is to explore how rethinking happens by seeking out the most convincing evidence and some of the world's most skilled rethinkers.
The first section focuses on opening our own minds. You'll find out why a forward-thinking businessman got trapped in the past, how a Nobel Prize-winning scientist welcomes the joy of being wrong, how the world's best forecasters update their views, and how an Oscar-winning filmmaker has productive fights.
The second section examines how we can encourage other people to think again. You'll learn how an international debate champion wins arguments and an African-American musician persuades people to abandon discrimination (歧视). You'll discover how a special kind of listening helped an officer convince the opposing side to join in peace talks. And if you're a Yankees fan, I'm going to see if I can convince you to root for the Red Sox.
The third section is about how we can create communities of lifelong learners. In social life, a lab that specializes in difficult conversations will cast light on how we can communicate better about debated issues like climate change. In schools, you'll find out how educators teach kids to think again by treating classrooms like museums, and approaching projects like rewriting time-honored textbooks. I close by examining the importance of reconsidering our best-laid plans.
This book is an invitation to let go of knowledge and opinions that are no longer serving you well, and to establish your sense of self in flexibility rather than consistency. If you can master the art of rethinking, I believe you'll be better positioned for success at work and happiness in life. Thinking again can help you generate new solutions to old problems and revisit old solutions to new problems. It's a path to learning more from the people around you and living with fewer regrets.
28. How does the author explain his or her ideas in the book

A. Helping a student with a complex math problem.
B. Walking an athlete through a detailed training plan.
C. Talking a friend into trying a different dressing style.
D. Guiding an employee to build a successful career path.
30. What does the author suggest readers do in the third section
A. Find faults in textbooks. B. Reflect on existing ideas.
C. Engage in climate debates. D. Change classroom decorations.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Rethinking: Find New Ways to Success

William Simpson has assumed responsibility for the care of 120 wild horses that roam on his land. He calls the project in Siskiyou county the Wild Horse Fire Brigade, and hopes the discoveries he makes from living among the animals will contribute to the debate around the role herbivores(食草动物) can play in wildfire mitigation. Simpson argues that the steep decline of herbivores in the region—the deer population in California has shrunk to less than 500,000 from an estimated peak of about 2 million in 1960—is a factor in the state's overgrown forests and grasslands, which in turn feeds increasingly extreme wildfires. "We've lost our herbivory so now we have abundant, abnormally high levels of vegetative materials which are driving the fires," he says.
Federal protection was granted to wild horses and burros (驴) in 1971 in an effort to stop their decline. This led to a population surge and a few years later the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was tasked with reducing the rapid growth. It began removing wild horses from public lands in annual round-ups. Last year, 20,000 horses were removed. Nearly 8,000 of those were adopted or sold, and 1,622 were given fertility treatment.
Simpson describes his method as "Goodallian", after the famed Jane Goodall. He spends every day among the animals, knows them by name and temperament, and is able to record novel behavior. He shares his findings with niche industry publications and on his website. "What I've been able to do is get so close to the horses. I can smell them, I can touch them, I can look at their parasites, I can pull ticks off them," he says. "There's so much that's unknown about wild horses and how they live."
In 2018, a fire tore through Siskiyou country and scorched 15,400 hectares before it was contained. Simpson's home and immediate surroundings remained largely undamaged, which he says is down to the horses. As the frequency and intensity of wildfires have increased, Simpson says he is increasingly receiving inquiries, all curious to learn more about the role wild horses may play in reducing the risk of wildfire. "People are finally starting to listen," he says.
32. What does Simpson believe is driving the increase in wildfires
A. Overpopulation of wild horses. B. Reduction of herbivores in that area.
C. Lack of protection for wild horses. D. Ineffective management of public lands.
33. What did the BLM do
A. It relocated horses to critical wilderness areas.
B. It provided long- and short-term care for wild horses.
C. It granted federal protection to wild horses and burros.
D. It took measures to drive the horses away.
34. How does Goodallian work
A. By staying aside the wild horses.
B. By working with Jane Goodall.
C. By recording the name and temperament.
D. By sharing news on the websites.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Survivor of Wildfires B. Call for the Return of Horses
C. Nature Protection Wanted D. Wildfire Does Harm to Horses

My first year of senior high school felt awkward. The school was twice as big as my old school, and to make matters worse, my closest friends went to a different high school. I felt very lonely.
One cold and windy Sunday afternoon, I was sitting at home at our dining room table doing homework, with a fire going in our fireplace. As usual, my cat was lying on top of my papers, purring (发出呼噜声) loudly. She was never far from me. I had rescued her when she was a kitten and put my name on her collar in case she got lost again.
Suddenly, I smelled something strange, and then I noticed that smoke was pouring in. It filled the room so quickly that we all ran out into the front yard. By the time we made our way outside, the whole roof was in flames and the fire was spreading quickly.
When the fire was finally out, our house was almost completely burned down. I was in a bad mood and then it struck me...I hadn't seen my cat. Where was my cat Much to my horror, I realized that my cat was gone and my heart ached for her. Then all at once it hit me—the new school, the fire, my cat—I broke down in tears and cried and cried.
The next day, I went to school. But I was totally embarrassed by everything. My clothes and shoes were borrowed from my aunt. I had no books or homework, and my backpack was gone. I had my life in that backpack! I didn't want to grow up if it was going to be this way. I just wanted to curl up and quit school.
It always seems that bad news spreads quickly. Everyone in high school, including the teachers, was aware of my sad situation. What a way to start off at a new school! This was not the kind of attention I was looking for.
The next day at school, people were acting even stranger than usual. They kept asking me to hurry up to the gym. I thought it was strange, but when I went into the gym, I knew why.

He stepped back but somehow leaned forward. This meant that the doors closed on his neck so his head was inside the train and the rest of his body was outside. His wife, who had found a seat, didn't seem to be the least disturbed. I realized that there was a real danger that he might be dragged along the platform and seriously injured so I leapt from my seat and, along with two other men, pulled at the doors, which soon sprang back. The man took his seat next to his wife. They were both completely calm and didn't say a word.

Mark Hyman, a medical director, had advised the sugar detox for me"可知,医学主任Mark Hyman建议作者戒糖→做推断:作者是遵照医生的命令去健身房参加"戒糖"研讨会的→定答案:D项"医生的"正确。
答案:A
43 a whole range of diseases from cancer to heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease" 可知,该处指医生建议作者戒糖以减掉内脏的脂肪,故选A。

解析:根据上文的unexpectedly并结合空后的"many of the myths I'd grown up with"可知,该处指这打破了作者从小至今的许多错误认识。
答案:A
For the first several days, frankly",空后提到"Making certain foods 48 made me want them more"→做推断:作者最开始几天的戒糖过程是令人苦恼的→定答案:A项"令人苦恼的";B项"鼓舞人心的";C项"成功的";D项"迷人的"。故选A。
答案:A
故选A。
My desire for sugar was intense and seemed never-ending"表明,作者对糖的渴望非常强烈而且似乎永无止境;下文中的"I was easy to get annoyed and moody"提到作者很容易生气和心情郁闷。

答案:who;traditional;harder;between;have made;eventually;introducing;varieties;to have been used;where
But some scholars suspect...more than 1,700 years ago"可知,一些学者怀疑它们最早是在1700多年前由生活在中国西部和中亚的人们传播到古代世界各地的。
Chinese dumplings and those in other areas"可知,该空应填between,表示"中国饺子和其他地区的饺子之间的关系很难追溯"。且the relationship between...and...

There was a big table with all kinds of stuff on it. It was like Christmas. They had taken up a collection and bought me school supplies, notebooks, all kinds of different clothes, tops, sweat, suits, etc. I was overcome by emotion. People who had never spoken to me before were coming up to me to introduce themselves. I got all kinds of invitations to their houses. Their genuine outpouring of concern really touched me. In that instant, I finally breathed a sigh of relief and thought for the first time that things were going to be okay. I made so many friends that day and I decided to move on and look on the bright side of life.
A week later, I was planning my new bedroom when the doorbell rang. "Does this cat belong to you " asked a woman at the door. I couldn't believe my eyes. She was holding my cat! I leaped up and grabbed her out of the woman's arms. I held her close to me and she purred happily. Apparently, my cat had been so freaked by the fire that she ran away. This wonderful woman took her in and worked hard to find out whose cat it was. As I sat there with my cat curling up in my lap, all the overwhelming feelings of loss and tragedy seemed to diminish. I felt gratitude for my life, my new friends, and the kindness of a stranger. My cat was back and so was I.
