When I was in middle school, I was on a family vacation in Washington DC. I found there was a homeless man down the street.
On our final day in the city, when my parents went for an evening walk, I went out of our hotel room and ran down the street to the homeless man.
He looked at me, surely not expecting anything from a middle school girl. I asked him what he wanted to have for dinner. He replied "Bread and water". I ran into the store and bought a big bag of bread and a bottle of water. I ran back with a smile on my face and handed the bag and the bottle to him. His smile has been in my mind ever since.
I came back to the hotel room and when my parents returned, my dad told me he had a story for me. He asked if I remembered the homeless man down the street from our hotel and I shyly nodded. He then told me a story. As they were returning from their walk, they saw the homeless man was sharing a bag full of food with other homeless people around. They were all smiling and laughing as they ate.
I smiled at my dad but I have never told him to this day the other half of the story. Till today, I still haven't forgotten that man's smile but I wish I had the courage to do this more often. Scientists have invented a new way to make electricity. Their method uses supertiny holes to make electricity from moisture(水分) in the air. Water droplets in the air carry an electric charge. In clouds, these water droplets build up large charges, which we later see as lightning. One of the researchers, Yao Jun, described the new invention as a "small-scale, man-made cloud". Since the new device generates electricity from the air, scientists call it "Air-gen".
The new device is very small and very simple. In it, water molecules from the air move through tiny holes from the upper part of a material down into the lower part of the material. The holes are the key. The material has lots of extremely tiny holes called "nanopores (纳米孔) ". As the water molecules work their way through the nanopores, they disrupt the electrical balance between the upper and lower parts of the material, leaving the upper part with a greater charge. This "imbalance" between the two parts is what creates electricity.
Currently, the device only makes a small amount of electricity. But in lab tests, the Air-gen produced electricity all day and all night for a week, powered by nothing but the air.
Scientists have tried to make electricity from humidity before, but those methods didn't work for long or were too expensive to make. In 2020, Dr. Yao and his team found a way of getting electricity from humidity using special "nanowires" made from bacteria. In time, that research led the scientists to the key invention of the Air-gen. The researchers are hopeful the Air-gen will become an important green energy source.
Many scientists are impressed with the ideas behind the Air-gen. But some scientists have suggested that it might be tough for the Air-gen to create enough electricity to really make a difference, especially compared with solar energy. But Dr. Yao and his team are to work on ways to make Air-gen technology more powerful. Dr. Yao says, "What I imagine is that sometime in the future, we can get clean electricity wherever we go."
28. Why does the author mention droplets in the first paragraph
A. To explain how they form lightning.
B. To stress that they carry electric charges.
C. To show they are a natural phenomenon.
D. To bring in the topic for discussion.
29. What does the underlined word "disrupt" in the second paragraph mean
A. Improve. B. Disturb. C. Adjust. D. Establish.
30. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph
A. Air-gen sets the pace in electricity generation.
B. Air-gen is more efficient than solar power.
C. Air-gen is based on previous research.
D. No electricity was made from moisture before.
31. What will Dr. Yao's team continue to do next
A. To expand the use of Air-gen.
B. To make Air-gen more productive.
C. To switch to the study of solar energy.
D. To cooperate with other research teams.

When she returned home that year, she was given an enthusiastic welcome in the same hall. Many hands stretched out to her, and many cameras focused on her. A reporter with glasses kept pestering her with the question: What do you like best She was wondering how to respond when she caught sight of a bunch of flowers. Then she said, "Flowers!" Following her remarks, more flowers were at once presented to her, too many for her to hold. During the past two years, she had participated in many international competitions and brought back one shining medal after another. What she got in return was all smiles, flowers and camera flashes. Was it because of this that she became preoccupied with wins The more she won, the more obsessed she was with the fear of losing. So her mind was in fact more burdened with success than with failure. The mind could control physical pains but could not free itself from mental strain easily.
This time when she was a little off balance on the horizontal bar(单杠), she became so worried that she lost self-control and fell off. This failure was followed by several more in other events. Afterwards in order to avoid people at the airport, she trailed along behind the team. She found that very few people greeted her and reporters seemed to shun her. However hard she tried, she couldn't turn the tide; she was a complete failure. Indeed, who would side with a failure
All of a sudden, she saw a pair of shoes in front of her. Who could it be She raised her bent head slowly and saw a navy blue suit, long legs, and then a clear fair face. Before her stood a stewardess with her hands behind her back, speaking with a smile, "I watched your performance on the television. I knew you would come home today. So I am here especially to welcome you."
"I did very poorly," she said and lowered her head again.
"No. You did your best."
"But I failed."
"Nobody can avoid failure. I believe failure is as important to you as success. Failure belongs to the past, and victory is the future." The stewardess's voice came gentle but firm.
Hearing these words, the girl raised her head. The stewardess held out her hands from behind her back with a large bouquet of colorful flowers, and presented it to the girl. The strong fragrance seemed to turn into a magic, powerful current that went through her body. She was moved to tears. Flowers are usually given to victorious heroes. Why to the disgraced loser
32. What does the underlined word "pestering" mean in paragraph 1
A. Greeting. B. Annoying. C. Inquiring. D. Concerning.
33. According to the passage, what contributed to her winning medals before
A. She had received many smiles, flowers and camera flashes.
B. She was passionate about walking on the horizontal bar.
C. Her mind was free from excessive anxiety about failure.
D. She was in good physical condition.
34. What may be her strongest emotion after she failed
A. Ashamed. B. Stressed. C. Miserable. D. Grief-stricken.
35. What is the main message the writer tries to convey
A. Action is worry's worst enemy.
B. The winners laugh and the losers weep.
C. Excessive pressure will become a burden.
D. Success is never final and failure is never fatal.

Tomatoes: The Real Magical Fruit
"Fresh tomato plants! Straight out of the ground! 50 cents each!" I shouted in the school hall. In my hands, I carried a shoebox with little tomato plants. Their homes were plastic bottles, without the top half. Most people ignored my product, but some handed me 50 cents and picked out a 2-week-old baby tomato plant.
About a month before this, I started gardening. I pulled up grass in my little garden for several days in a row. Satisfied with my work, I continued to the second step-begging my dad to take me to the supermarket. He agreed!
When my dad turned off the engine and opened the door, I practically skipped inside the supermarket. We headed straight for the garden center. I picked up planters, seeds and dirt. My dad helped and showed me the best dirt and tomato plant types to get. We got to the register, and my dad, knowing what would happen, helped me pay.
As soon as I got home, I began to plant them in my garden. The following days witnessed my visits to the garden and my parents were amazed by my devotion to my new-found love.
Then was the part where I met my problem-I planted too many tomato seeds. I realized this all too late, about 10 days later when they all started sprouting(发芽) up and I counted 45 tomato plants. A few days went by and then I ended up with 85 tomato plants.
I did what all high schoolers would do when they messed up-I asked people around. I even got a notebook to write down their suggestions. Sadly, I got the same answer from most people, "Just let them die." WHAT ! Let my beautiful plants die They had so much potential! They could make 20-30 tomatoes per plant! We were talking about the possibility of around 2,550 tomatoes!

Perhaps it is because I have been in such a good school. From the 12-year-olds in the first year, to those who are now 18 and ready to leave for university or a job, I have enjoyed working with you all. I can honestly say that getting this job was like winning a prize. I have met some amazing, wise people — star students, great friends. 第二节
答案:
So, I decided to solve it in my way. I separated plants, collected water bottles and spent hours making labels. At this stage, these plants had become like my children. I understood why people referred to themselves as plant parents, as they devoted time and effort into a tiny life form. I had such a deep affection for those plants that I couldn't wait to give them new homes. My aim was to offer them at an affordable price and ensure a modest profit, so I decided on 50 cents per plant.
The result was better than I had thought. I even managed to generate a decent profit from it. I owed much to my parents-my mom shared the art of marketing the product, while my dad taught me how to attract potential customers. Better still, I found my passion for gardening and running a small business. As of now, I am planning for this year's tomato plant business, eagerly anticipating the exciting tomato adventure that awaits. That's why tomatoes have become the magical fruit in my life.
