When I was a boy we used to live across the road from a big hill with huge oak trees growing out of it. When winter arrived, thick, heavy snow would fall, and my two brothers would grab their sleds (雪橇) heading over to the hill for a day of fun. I remember watching them with envy because I was still too small to go sledding. Finally, one winter I was considered big enough and joined my brothers as they carried their sleds up the long hill and prepared to ride down it.
The first few trips I rode with one of my brothers and had the time of my life. It was so exhilarating when the wind whipped across my face as I flew down the hillside on the wooden sled. Near the end of the day I was overjoyed too when my oldest brother decided to let me try riding the sled all by myself. I climbed on it full of excitement and lay on my stomach. Then with one big push my brother sent me down the snowy hillside. I was doing pretty well too until I hit an old stump hidden by the snow and went off course, straight towards one of those big oak trees. My heart pounded in my chest and I could hear myself screaming. At the last possible second I rolled off and the sled crashed into the tree. I could hear my brothers running down the hill yelling, “You have to steer (操控)! You have to steer!”
Sadly, that wasn’t the last time I failed to steer when some obstacle knocked me off course in my life. Many times problems, troubles, and my own failures have sent me crashing into the trees of anger, frustration, and despair. I am still learning that life isn’t always safe sledding. I am still learning that it is up to me to steer myself back to love, back to kindness, and back to goodness.
Life is a trip, but no one ever said it was a smooth ride. Steer well then. Steer straight. Steer your soul towards the light and the love we are all meant for.
4. What do we know about the author when he was very young
A. He lived on a big hill with huge oak trees on it.
B. He was frightened to go sledding with his brothers.
C. He longed to go sledding with his brothers.
D. He carried his brothers’ sleds as they went sledding.
5. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “exhilarating” in Paragraph 2
A. Delightful. B. Terrifying. C. Ordinary. D. Violent.
6. Why did the author fall off his sled
A. Because his sled crashed in an oak tree. B. Because he lost control of his sled.
C. Because his brother pushed it so hard. D. Because the hillside was snowy.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A Life out of Control. B. A Life with Courage and Determination.
C. A Life in My Hands. D. A Life of Coincidences.
C 5. A 6. B 7. C
根据第一段中“When winter arrived, thick, heavy snow would fall, and my two brothers would grab their sleds (雪橇) heading over to the hill for a day of fun. I remember watching them with envy because I was still too small to go sledding. (冬天一到,又厚又大的雪就会下起来,我的两个哥哥就会拉着雪橇到山上去玩一天。我记得我羡慕地看着他们,因为我还太小,不能去滑雪)”可知,小时候作者因为年龄还小无法和哥哥们去滑雪,只能羡慕地看着他们。由此可知,他很渴望和哥哥们去滑雪。故选C项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“when the wind whipped across my face as I flew down the hillside on the wooden sled. Near the end of the day I was overjoyed too when my oldest brother decided to let me try riding the sled all by myself. (当我坐着木雪橇从山坡上飞下来时,风拂过我的脸。一天快结束的时候,我的哥哥决定让我试着独自坐雪橇,我也欣喜若狂)”可知,此处先描述作者初次尝试和哥哥们一起滑雪的经历,然后描述作者独自一人滑雪的经历,他后面的感受是“也欣喜若狂”。由此可知,他初次尝试的感受是欣喜若狂的,exhilarating意为“令人兴奋的,令人高兴的”,与delightful意思相近。故选A项。
根据第二段中“I was doing pretty well too until I hit an old stump hidden by the snow and went off course, straight towards one of those big oak trees. (我本来也做得很好,直到我撞上了一个被雪遮住的老树桩,我就偏离了路线,直奔其中一棵大橡树而去)”和“At the last possible second I rolled off and the sled crashed into the tree. (就在最后一刻,我滚了下来,雪橇撞到了树上)”可知,作者从雪橇上摔下来是因为他偏离路线后没能掌控自己的雪橇。故选B项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章围绕作者小时候滑雪的经历展开,讲述了在独自一人用雪橇滑雪的时候,作者没能操控自己的雪橇,不小心撞上了大树。作者由此领悟到生活并非一帆风顺,有可能会偏离方向,我们需要学会掌控。再结合最后一段“Life is a trip, but no one ever said it was a smooth ride. Steer well then. Steer straight. Steer your soul towards the light and the love we are all meant for. (生活是一场旅行,但从来没有人说它是一帆风顺的。那就好好操控吧。正确地操控。引导你的灵魂走向光明和我们所向往的爱)”可知,C项“生活掌控在我的手中”符合文章大意,最适合作为标题。故选C项。
C
Contrary to popular opinion, the scientific pursuit for knowledge is not a predictable and well-defined process. To make new discoveries, researchers need the freedom to be creative, fail, and learn by chance. There is the romantic idea of the scientist who has an Eureka moment (顿悟时刻) and suddenly arrives at new insights. Another impression is that research only involves formal steps. Neither of those ideas is correct.
“Science and art are two different ways to make something understandable or imaginable,” says Biochemistry Professor Dolf Weijers. “From the outside, the research process looks very formal and the artistic process looks somewhat messy. But the scientific process can also unfold (展开) in an unpredictable way. Creative and associative thinking is very important for scientists to gain insight and make connections.”
There is an intersection (交叉点) between science and art. This is why Wageningen scientists look to artists for inspiration and exchange ideas about how to amplify creative freedom. Weijers and his colleague Joris Sprakel, together with other scientists and artists, have designed a plan to learn from each other and to exchange ideas. One example is the recent and special project in which they measured the forces that act on plant cells. A molecular (分子) sensor was used to visualise the different forces. They revealed the results in colourful images, each representing a different force.
What science and art also have in common is that they are topics of discussion in society. There are people who say that they do not value art and people who mistrust science. “It often creates the wrong impression because only the results of scientific studies are presented, and people do not have any insight into the artistic process leading to discovery. As a scientist, you are criticised if you say that something is different a few years later. Then you are viewed as unreliable. But what is often poorly understood is that there are no final results in science,” says Weijers.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The views on science research. B. The purpose of science research.
C. The hardship of science research. D. The attitude to science research.
9. What can we know from Weijers’s view
A. Scientists should have creative and associative thinking.
B. The artistic process is too messy to be used in research.
C. The scientific process always unfolds in an unpredictable way.
D. The research process and the artistic process are totally different.
10. What does the underlined word “amplify” mean in the third paragraph
A. Refuse. B. Detect. C. Increase. D. Imply.
11. Why does the author mention Weijers’s research on plant cells
A. To stress the importance of thinking freely.
B. To display the beauty of colourful images.
C. To present the findings of his recent project.
D. To show the connection between science and art.
A 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据第一段内容“Contrary to popular opinion, the scientific pursuit for knowledge is not a predictable and well-defined process. To make new discoveries, researchers need the freedom to be creative fail, and learn by chance. There is the romantic idea of the scientist who has an Eureka moment (顿悟时刻) and suddenly arrives at new insights. Another impression is that research only involves formal steps. Neither of those ideas is correct.(与流行的观点相反,对知识的科学追求不是一个可预测和明确定义的过程。为了有新的发现,研究人员需要创造性、失败和偶然学习的自由。有一个浪漫的想法,科学家突然有了一个顿悟的时刻,突然有了新的见解。另一个印象是,研究只涉及正式步骤。这些想法都不正确。)”可知,第一段主要讨论人们对于科学研究的看法。故选A。
根据第二段Weijers说的话“Science and art are two different ways to make something comprehensible or imaginable(科学和艺术是使事物变得可理解或可想象的两种不同方式)”和“But the scientific process can also unfold (展开) in an unpredictable way. Creative and associative thinking is very important for scientists to gain insight and make connections.(但科学过程也可能以一种不可预测的方式展开。创造性和联想思维对科学家获得洞察力和建立联系非常重要。)”可知,从Weijers的观点中我们可以了解到科学家应该具有创造性和联想性思维。故选A。
根据第二段的“Creative and associative thinking is very important for scientists to gain insight and make connections.(创造性和联想思维对科学家获得洞察力和建立联系非常重要。)”和第三段的“There is an intersection (交叉点) between science and art.(科学和艺术之间有交集。)”和“look to artists for inspiration and exchange ideas(从艺术家那里寻找灵感并交流想法)”可知,划线词所在句子表示“科学和艺术之间有交集。这就是为什么瓦赫宁根的科学家们从艺术家那里寻找灵感,并就如何扩大创作自由交换意见”,因此划线词amplify的意思是“扩大,增加”,和increase意思相近,故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。第三段第一句“There is an intersection (交叉点) between science and art. (科学和艺术之间有交叉。)”和“One example is the recent and special project in which they measured the forces that act on plant cells. A molecular (分子) sensor was used to visualise the different forces. They revealed the results in colourful images, each representing a different force.(一个例子是最近的一个特殊项目,他们测量了作用在植物细胞上的力。一个分子传感器被用来观察不同的力。他们用彩色图像展示了实验结果,每张图像代表一种不同的力。)”可知,通过Weijers的关于植物细胞的研究事例说明艺术与科学之间的交叉融合,表明艺术与科学的联系。故选D。
D
Nine out of every ten humans are right-handed, an imbalance that researchers for decades have attempted to explain, without definitive success.
One of the ideas considered is the fighting hypothesis (假说), which suggests that left-handedness provides an advantage in fight, although with an overall hit to physical health that keeps lefties rare in the population. Indeed, males-who historically have competed most strongly for resources and mates - are left-handed at slightly higher rates than females. Moreover, studies suggest that lefties tend to outperform right-handed people in fighting sports as well as in some ball games that require hand-eye coordination like tennis, baseball, and volleyball.
However, a big problem with the fighting hypothesis is that its predicted health disadvantage hasn’t been proven in large studies. On the whole, left-handed people don’t seem to suffer from more health problems than right-handed people, nor do they live shorter lives.
Noticing this, three scientists coming from Sweden and the UK proposed an update to the hypothesis. In an article published in the journal Symmetry, they say that right-handed humans actually had a greater fighting advantage over much of our species’ history, which is why they’ve become far more numerous.
According to the researchers, it has something to do with the position of the heart and the idea that humans did most of their fighting with handheld, pointy weapons for much of our species’ existence.
About three-quarters of the heart is situated in the left hemithorax (左胸腔) making the left side of the chest an easy target for a mortal blow. The researchers note that when humans battle with stabbing weapons, the hand used to hold the weapon determines which area of the chest is exposed to an enemy. A left-handed grasp will rotate the left side of the chest to the right, and thus most of the heart toward an enemy, while a right-handed grip will rotate it away. Generally, this means that right-handed humans might be more protected from a deadly strike.
But it should be noted that this new explanation for the predominance of right-handed people is still very much a hypothesis, and yet unproven.
12. Why are most people right-handed according to the previous hypothesis
A. Because right-handedness has an advantage in the fight.
B. Because lefties tend to underperform in the competition.
C. Because left-handedness poses a threat to the overall health.
D. Because lefties historically competed strongly for resources and mates.
13. What can we infer from the passage
A. Right-handed people have a higher risk of developing health problems.
B. The researchers have confirmed why most people are right-handed.
C. It’s still under research why most people are right-handed.
D. The position of our heart decides we are right-handed.
14. What will the left-handed grasping weapon possibly lead to
A. It will protect us from a deadly strike.
B. It will expose most of the heart to an enemy.
C. It will turn the right side of the chest to the left.
D. It will make the upper chest a target for a mortal blow.
15. What is the author’s attitude to the updated fighting hypothesis
A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
C 13. C 14. B 15. A
根据第二段“One of the ideas considered is the fighting hypothesis (假说), which suggests that left-handedness provides an advantage in fight, although with an overall hit to physical health that keeps lefties rare in the population.(其中一个被考虑的观点是“战斗假说”,该假说认为,左撇子在战斗中具有优势,尽管左撇子对身体健康的总体影响使其在人群中非常罕见)”和第三段“However, a big problem with the fighting hypothesis is that its predicted health disadvantage hasn’t been proven in large studies.(然而,战斗假说的一个大问题是,其预测的健康劣势尚未在大型研究中得到证实。)”
根据最后一段“But it should be noted that this new explanation for the predominance of right-handed people is still very much a hypothesis, and yet unproven.(但应该指出的是,这个关于右撇子占优势的新解释在很大程度上仍然是一个假设,尚未得到证实)”可推知,为什么大多数人都是右撇子仍在研究中。
根据倒数第二段“A left-handed grasp will rotate the left side of the chest to the right, and thus most of the heart toward an enemy, while a right-handed grip will rotate it away.(左手抓握会使胸部的左侧向右旋转,从而使心脏的大部分朝向敌人,而右手抓握则会使心脏远离敌人)”可知,左手抓握武器可能会导致它将大部分心脏暴露给敌人。
根据最后一段“But it should be noted that this new explanation for the predominance of right-handed people is still very much a hypothesis, and yet unproven.(但应该指出的是,这个关于右撇子占优势的新解释在很大程度上仍然是一个假设,尚未得到证实)”可推知,作者主要列举了大量的事实,且最后提到假设尚未得到证实,说明作者对更新后的战斗假说的态度是客观的。故选A。

It was a cold December, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. We relied on social assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were secondhand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realized what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck (塞) a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles (鞋底) were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Our rent was $100 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would move out right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to (有资格获得) $100 for Christmas from social services. It was four days before Christmas. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our back rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
What Mom didn’t know was that I had been selling Christmas trees, sweeping snow and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots -- boots that weren’t patched (缝补); boots with no cardboard in it. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the shopping center for it. On the way, I noticed a grocery store(杂货店).

61. The family was poor and had no money for Christmas, and the author wanted to buy boots with the money he secretly made.

63. The responsibility and satisfaction for the whole family.
根据第一段第二句“Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community.”(在我们的小社区里,妈妈很难独自抚养我们这些孩子。)及第三段第二三句“It was four days before Christmas. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our back rent.”(离圣诞节还有四天。 及第四段前两句“What Mom didn’t know was that I had been selling Christmas trees, sweeping snow and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots -- boots that weren’t patched(缝补); boots with no cardboard in it. I knew exactly which boots I wanted.”(妈妈不知道的是,我一直在卖圣诞树,扫雪,做兼职,赚足够的钱买一双新靴子——一双没有打补丁的靴子,没有硬纸板的靴子。我很清楚我想要哪双靴子。)可知,作者家里很穷,没有钱过圣诞节,而作者想用他偷偷挣来的钱买靴子。故答案为The family was poor and had no money for Christmas, and the author wanted to buy boots with the money he secretly made.

Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our back rent.”(离圣诞节还有四天。 The author would step into the grocery store, buy ham, oranges and even some dazzling Christmas decorations. He or she would spend every dime of hard-earned money and go back home.
根据第五段“The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the shopping center for it. On the way, I noticed a grocery store”(我得到靴子的大日子是在平安夜的下午。 The responsibility and satisfaction for the whole family.

How to communicate with our parents
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Recently, a composition competition themed “how to communicate with parents” has been held among students of Grade One in our school.
As far as I am concerned, it is of great necessity for both parents and children to have good communication, due to the fact that nowadays the most popular structure of Chinese families consists of only parents and children. Therefore, fruitful communication between different generations can ensure a more harmonious family life.
As for how to communicate well with our parents, here are three approaches which we can adopt. To begin with, listen with great patience when communicating with parents. You will benefit a lot from being a good listener. In addition, conflicts will inevitably arise during the communication process. Remember to stay open minded and welcome any form of disagreement. Last but not the least, always put yourself in your parents’ shoes, and try to be a little bit more understanding although sometimes they may make mistakes.
Good communication is not something one-sided. Therefore, equal efforts should be made by both parents and children.

All-in-one communication
Technology company Anker announced the launch of an “all-in-one” device designed to improve communications for employees working from home. The Anker Work B600 sits on top of the computer display like a traditional webcam. The robot can be controlled by voice commands or from an app on a phone. It can also be programmed based on an exact map of a users home. The Retriever is designed “to serve as an extra pair of hands and lighten the load of everyday tasks in the home”.
Self-driving tractor
American-based farm equipment manufacturer John Deere presented a fully self-driving tractor equipped with six different cameras and a series of sensors to guide the tractor through the fields. Farmers can control the vehicle and see the tractor’s progress in real-time through a mobile device which is to help farmers do more work with less equipment and people.

Contrary to popular opinion the scientific pursuit for knowledge is not a predictable and well-defined process.
About three-quarters of the heart is situated in the left hemithorax (左胸腔), making the left side of the chest an easy target for a mortal blow.
A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
