Monty Roberts owns a horse ranch(牧场).He has let me use his house to put on fund raising events. The last time I was there he told me a story. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer (巡回驯马师) who would go from stable to stable (马厩), race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he wrote a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.
He wrote a seven page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200 acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000 square foot house that would sit on a 200 acre dream ranch.
He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “See me after class.”
Confused and disappointed, the boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “Why did I receive an F?” The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from a poor family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “If you rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.”

It was Friday at the end of a really, really long week. Mike and I were having friends over for dinner.
Just before I got home, Mike texted me to say that he had to stay late at work. I was on my own to get everything ready for the night. Already running late myself, I felt frustrated as I drove to pick up Haydn and Michael from school. I rushed them into the car and informed them that we were making a few stops before heading home, and that they needed to help me tidy the house.
Both of them started whining immediately. I turned and pointed a threatening finger at them, warning that I was not in the mood to listen. They crossed their arms and sulked (生闷气). For the next hour, I dragged the boys from one place to the next. The more I needed them to hurry, the more slower they became.
Just as we were finished, the boys reminded me to stop at the pet store to pick up crickets for their lizards. “Fine, but we need to be fast,” I said, and we raced to the pet shop.
Fifteen minutes later, we were back in the car with one hundred live crickets (蟋蟀) in a clear plastic bag. I pulled into the driveway with only forty five minutes left to unpack the car, clean the house, and set the table before my guests arrived. How would I make it
I started barking orders at the boys, but they were focused on pouring the crickets from the plastic bag into their little box. I got angry, and I yelled at them to hurry up. I don't really know how it happened, but the next time I looked up, one hundred crickets were jumping all over my kitchen, chirping noisily.
I screamed and jumped up onto a chair to get away from them. My frustration exploded, and anger suddenly griped my senses. They were running around, trying crazily to catch the crickets and screaming with laughter. It was pure joy, and amazing.

Heiss, 61, has lived in southeastern Bisbee for more than three decades. Ten years ago, he and his wife lost their only child, a son. They have no grandchildren.
On December 16, 2018, Heiss noticed a balloon's string was attached to a piece of paper.
“Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child's writing. Heiss turned the paper over and found it was a Christmas list. He wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million.
Based on the prevailing (当时的) wind, he was quite sure that was where it had come from.
On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio XENY, an AM radio station based in Nogales.
To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away.
The next morning, Heiss awoke to another message from Radio XENY: They had found Dayami, an eight year old girl. She and her family indeed lived in Nogales. Would they be willing to arrange a get together at the radio station
Heiss went with his wife to Walmart. They bought just about everything on Dayami's list except for the Enchantimals dollhouse (it was sold out). They also bought a few other toys, as they had learned that Dayami had a younger sister, four year old Ximena.

That summer I turned 18. I was wild with excitement because I just took my driving license and my parents bought me a new perfect car. I was reminded repeatedly by my parents to drive cautiously. Along with this new privilege (特权) came new responsibilities. I would practice the same routine-call my parents and tell them where I was going, whom I was with, and when I would be home. It became a typical cycle.
I had been working all day in the hot sun. I was exhausted and ready for a nap. But my stomach told me something different. So I called my friend Mike and made our way into town. After our meal, we never knew our day would soon change for the worse.
It takes only a moment to turn your life upside down. I recalled later that I was driving fast. Actually too fast. I reached the conclusion two years later that the mistake would be with me for the rest of my life.
Mike and I were driving down a dusty gravel (沙砾) road. I was driving a shiny black Saturn, which was the car I had admired for long. I was overflowing with excitement and pride to be driving it. It was perfect in my eyes. I could see the rolling hills in the distance. Tall pine trees traveled on both sides of the road. The music playing loudly, we both were in high spirits. Somehow, without realizing it, I sped up.
Enjoying ourselves in my car, we came across a loose spot of gravel. My tires were stuck in it and desperate to escape. My car started fishtailing (摆尾行驶). Terrified, I pressed hard on the brakes and all of a sudden the car lost control. I froze, my body was stiff, great panic holding me entirely in its power. Looking into the right, I took a glimpse of Mike, whose body had leaned towards me. His face went pale but he was trying to balance himself. The car was rushing left to right, coasting (惯性滑行) along the gravel as if it were ice. It was only seconds later that my car crashed head on into a big pine tree.

Jungle Shorts
It was Friday afternoon. Class 3 were waiting to go home. Lenny was at the back because the zip on his anorak (防水衣) had stuck. “Here is a letter for you all.” said Mr. Cox. “Give it to your parents.”
Lenny rushed to meet his mum. She read it, “Class 3 is going to have football lessons. Next week.”
“Wow!”shouted Lenny. “Real football!I bet I score fifteen goals!”
At home Lenny couldn't get out of his anorak and his mum had to help him. “I'm glad you didn't break the zip.I can't get you another coat until next month.” she said.
“I don't want a new coat,” said Lenny, “but can I have real football shorts?”
Mum said, “We'll go to the market tomorrow to look for some.”
That night Lenny lay awake thinking. He was going to make sure his mum bought white football shorts. Then he could score many goals.
After breakfast the next day they left for the market. On the way they saw Ted and Shane from Class 3 kicking a ball, who lived near Lenny on Lyon Street. “We've got new shorts!” they cried out.
The market was very crowded. One man was selling jungle shorts. “Big or small, they don't cost much,” said the man. “No thanks,” said Lenny. “I need real football shorts.” He pulled at his mum's hand and struggled through the crowds, trying to find real football shorts, but failed. They went slowly back and bought a pair of jungle shorts. On the way home they saw Tessa and Pam from Class 3 living on Lenny's street. “We've got new shorts for football!” said the girls .
“So have I,” said Lenny. But he didn't open his bag to show them.
On Monday afternoon, 20 children from Class 3 were waiting for their first football lesson. Everybody in the changing room was noisy and excited, swinging their bags of football things. Lenny was at the back with the jungle shorts in his bag. He didn't want to put them on.

When I first met George, I was in my early 30s, trying to find something creative to get away from the boring housework and raising little ones. My children, then aged three and five, were just entering kindergarten and school life.
At 55, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was “it” and we met at a local painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last for 25 years—until the day he died.
George was a man who lived life to the full; he worked hard, played hard, and had an opinion about everything. He loved his wife, his family, his friends, and took pride in his fitness and health and walked three kilometres every day. And as the only male in a painting class full of women, George ruled the roost and we were his hens. He looked after everyone with the same attention.
He took to painting with a great passion and commitment, even transforming the spare bedroom of his home into a studio (工作室). His painting equipment was comprehensive—an easel (画架), quality paints, brushes, palette, canvases, charcoal pencils, etc. George housed many of these items in a red metal tool box with the original shop sticker with the price. Not fancy, but shiny and very red.
For about six years George and I studied together until the completion of the course drew us apart. We kept in touch as we lived within a couple of kilometres of each other. I'd sometimes see him on his daily walk or at the local shops and occasionally we'd chat over an afternoon tea.
Last year George was about 80 years old. He rang one day and asked me to come to his house. While his wife Dorothy served tea and cake, George explained that he was giving up painting and giving away all his “stuff”.

The most treasured item is the Red Tool Box, still in good shape, and red. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price is worn off. Reflections of Hope in the Snowstorm
I was homesick. My husband, Keith, was attending Utah State University in Logan, Utah. We lived eight hundred miles away from my parents and family back home in California. We couldn't afford to go home for Christmas. We would just stay home in Hyrum.
Then a most unexpected gift arrived in a Christmas card: enough money for gas for the eight hundred mile drive home. We were so excited. Keith took time off from his part time job and we packed the car. We prayed for safety and good traveling conditions.
We drove all day to the west coast of California. Everything went well and we finally drove up the familiar driveway, honking (按喇叭) the horn to signal our arrival. My family rushed out to greet us, welcoming us with love and Christmas cheer.
We celebrated Christmas in my childhood home, all of us together again for the first time in three years. All too soon, the time came for us to return to Utah. My parents gave us some money for gas. With tears and hugs, we started on our way. Hoping to make good time, we drove steadily through the day.
Toward evening, snow flurries swirled (盘旋飞舞) around the car. We stopped just long enough to fuel up the car. With no credit card and very little cash, we did not even consider staying overnight in a motel.
If the road and weather conditions were good, we had about two hours of driving to get to Salt Lake City, where we could just make it to Keith's parents' home that night for a rest. Then we could go on to Hyrum in the morning, and he would make it to work on time. We drove into the darkening night. Snow swirled wildly about the car. Keith was having trouble seeing the road, as the headlights seemed dim. He pulled over, and got out to brush the snow away from them.

I live in a poorer quarter of my small Maine town. But I like it here. It's pretty, and I know all my neighbors.
Some years back I returned home to find that my house had been broken into. As I said, I know all my neighbors and therefore had a pretty good idea who the burglar was. I spoke with the police, and when I made my suspicions known they rolled their eyes. “He's got quite a record already,” they told me. “If you accused Jared, (not his real name) he will go to juvenile detention (少管所) until he's 21.”
I asked the police to hold off until I could speak with Jared. In the interim (期间) I went to his high school and told the principal what had happened. I also came up with a way that wouldn't involve the law.
My next stop was Jared's house. When he saw me, fear filled his eyes. “It's OK. Let's take a walk.” I said. As he walked beside me I asked why he had broken into my home. “If I take you to court, you'll go to the youth center for six years.”
A look of regret spread across Jared's face and I seized the moment. “Look,” I said, “and listen carefully. I spoke to the high school. I've offered to mentor (辅导) you for one school year. This means you have to meet with me for one hour every week. We'll spend a half hour on homework and a half hour talking about anything you like. But you must commit, and you must repay the money you stole from my house.”
He took the offer. To Jared's credit, he showed up in a quiet, dedicated (专用的) space in the school every Friday morning.

One afternoon Amy wanted to go with Meg and Jo to the theater, but Jo refused, saying, “No, Laurie only invited us.”
“I'll make you sorry of this, Jo March!”Amy shouted.
The two sisters enjoyed themselves at the theater, but Jo couldn't stop worrying as she wondered what Amy would do to “make her sorry”. She found out the next afternoon.
Amy and Meg were sitting together when Jo ran into the room, asking “Has anyone taken my notebook?” Meg said “No” at once, but Amy said nothing.
“Amy, you've got it,” said Jo, “Don't lie, or I'll make you!”
“Do what you like,” said Amy, “You'll never see your stupid book again!I burned it!”
Jo's face went white. “What!I worked so hard writing my stories!”
“I said I'd make you sorry, and I have!” said Amy.
Jo jumped at Amy and shook her shoulders. “You wicked (邪恶的) girl!” cried Jo. “I'll tell Mom!”
“Oh, how could you do that, Amy?” Mrs. March said, “That was Jo's book of stories. She wrote them all herself.”
Amy understood the terrible thing she had done and cried. Later, Amy begged her sister to forgive her. “I shall never forgive you,” Jo answered.
Next day, Amy complained Jo and Laurie went skating without her. “It's hard for her to forgive you, Amy,” said Meg. “Go after them and do something kind.”
Jo and Laurie were skating when Amy arrived. Jo saw Amy but turned away. Laurie was carefully skating along the edge of the ice and didn't see Amy. “Keep near the edge. The ice isn't safe in the middle,” Laurie called to Jo.
Jo heard and realized Amy probably hadn't heard, but she said nothing and skated after Laurie. “Let Amy look after herself !” Jo thought.
Amy skated out towards the middle of the river. Jo reached the bend, and a strange feeling made her turn round—just in time to see Amy throw up her hands and go crashing through the ice into the cold water!Amy gave a cry that made Jo's heart stop with fear. This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cell phone!Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It's really amazing.”
“Well,” Jane shrugged (耸) her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I'll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!”
“Sounds more like punishment than a vacation,” she didn't look up from her soup and mumbled (嘟囔), “I can not walk that far.”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK. I'll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I'm ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path.
“I'm still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.
