When I was thirteen years old, I became very interested in shopping. After a while being
just a buyer, I wanted to sell something. I had many things around the house from my
childhood that I no longer needed. I knew, with the help of my father, I could make money. So
far months and months I enjoyed myself by selling things on my dad's account(账户).
On December 9, 2020, I opened my own account and began to start my own business.
Things were going great and then I realized that selling things around house wasn't making
me the kind of money that I wanted to make, so I decided to turn my business into a resale
shop. I went around to the garage sale(旧货出售处)and bought items at low prices and sold
them at higher prices.
Last November, I went to a garage sale that was a little bit different. A single lady had
many nice items that I knew I would sell quickly. I went up to her and started a conversation
with her. Through the conversation, I knew she was jobless at the moment and needed money
to support her family. I decided to sell any of her things for her to help her out. She looked at
me for a moment and then broke into tears. I took away some of her things and over the next
month I made over $1,500 for her! She was so thankful for all of my help.
I have never felt so happy to help someone in my life. I felt as if I had made a difference
in this world and that my skills could be used to help someone who would really need it.

Much of today’s science of physics is based on Newton’s discovery of the three laws of
motion(运动) and his theory of gravity(重力). Newton also developed one of the most
powerful tools of mathematics.
Isaac Newton was born in Wools Thorpe, England, on Dec 25, 1642. He was born early.
He was a small baby and very weak. No one expected him to survive. But he surprised
everyone. Newton’s father died before he was born. The boy was not a good student. Yet he
liked to make things, such as kites and clocks and simple machines. Newton also enjoyed
finding new ways to answer questions or solve problems. As a boy, for example, he decided
to find a way to measure the speed of the wind.
On a windy day, he measured how far he could jump with the wind at this back. Then he
measured how far he could jump with the wind in his face. From the difference between the
two jumps, he made his own measure of the strength of the wind.
It soon became clear, however, that the boy was not a good farmer. He spent his time
solving mathematical problems, instead of taking care of the crops. He spent hours visiting a
bookstore in the town, instead of selling his vegetables in the market. Newton became a
student of Cambridge University.
The leading English poet of Newton’s time, Alexander Pope, honored the scientist with
these words, “Nature and nature’s laws lay hid in night. God said,’’ ‘Let Newton be!’ and all
was light.”
59. Everyone was _____ when Newton survived from the weakness at last.
A. happy B. angry C. surprised D. interested
60. From ____, he made his own measure of the strength of the wind.
A. taking care of the crops
B. selling his vegetable in the market
C. the difference between the two jumps
D. making things, such as kites and simple machines
61. When Isaac was a boy, he ______.
A. liked to make things
B. spend his time taking care of the crops
C. enjoyed finding new ways to make things
D. spent hours selling his vegetables in the market

For most people, playing tennis or going to the gym is a good way to exercise and relax.
However, some people are not satisfied with such "boring" sports. They prefer dangerous
sports like mountain climbing, scuba diving, or hang gliding. These daredevils love the adventure
of reaching the top of the highest mountain, swimming underwater in dangerous areas of the
ocean, or jumping off a mountain and silently gliding down to flat land. They feel most "alive"
when there is the possibility that they might die the next minute.
Why do these people participate in such dangerous sports There are many answers.
Some daredevils are actually very careful. They examine the potential (潜在的) dangers, pay
attention to both their physical and mental health, and carefully check their equipment. Often,
they choose a specific sport because they have always been frightened of it, and they want to
have power over their fear. They do not want to die, but they do not want to be scared of dying
either.
Other daredevils are very different from normal people. Most people, for example, feel
nervous before doing something dangerous, afraid during the event, and excited after it. Many
daredevils, on the other hand, feel so excited during the dangerous action that they decide to do
it again and again. They are addicted to excitement as other people are addicted to drugs or
alcohol. It is possible that many daredevils have slightly higher amounts of certain chemicals in
their bodies, but scientists haven’t yet studied this enough to be sure.
62. The underlined word "alive" in the first paragraph could best be replaced by___________
A. excited B. tired C. fresh D. normal
63. Some people participate in dangerous sports probably because______________
A. they are never afraid of dangers
B. they have a high amount of certain chemicals in their minds
C. they feel excited about knowing they will die at any time
D. they want to give themselves a test of courage
64. Which of the following is true according to the passage
A. The majority of people prefer “boring” sports.
B. All the daredevils are crazy but not careful at all.
C. The daredevils love dangerous sports because they use drugs
D. It has been proved that daredevils have slightly higher amounts of certain chemicals
65. The purpose of this passage is mainly to_______________
A examine facts B. give information
C compare hobbies D. ask people to take up dangerous sports
