Coming into the freshman year at Paul College, Sansa was concerned about her ability as an individual to make a difference to such a large community, for it was never hard for her to stand out from peers (同龄人) in high school. Luckily, each first-year student in Paul College takes part in what is called the First-year Innovation and Research Experience, commonly referred to as the FIRE Program, an extracurricular project held by the organization. She was able to develop valuable connections with her fellow students and their peer advisor who had so much first-hand experience with what they all were going through.
The biggest highlight (亮点) of her freshman year was working alongside her FIRE team on a Grand Challenge Project, in which every FIRE team competed against one another in the Undergraduate Research Meeting. Each team had to create a unique product that solved one of the five following real-world problems: “Water is Life”, “Food”, “Threats from Cyberspace”, “Medical Breakthroughs”, and “Addictive Society”. Her team dealt with the growing issue of “Addictive Society”. Doing research, collecting facts and organizing discussions or even debates were a huge amount of work before they went to compete against other teams.
After weeks of tireless preparation, their collective efforts paid off at the Undergraduate Research Meeting. They earned a place in the final round of the meeting, where they competed against the top team from each of the other Grand Challenge groups. They were so overcome with pride when they were finally announced as the overall first-place team at the college!
If it hadn't been for her group's determination, excellent teamwork and their respectable peer advisor Hayley, they would not have been able to achieve everything they did. This experience would be helpful in her future.
24. How did the FIRE Program help Sansa according to paragraph 1
A. She stood out from peers at college. B. She made a difference to the community.
C. She got much first-hand experience. D. She became connected with her team.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The methods of doing research. B. Sansa's working experience with the team.
C. The final result of the competition. D. The five growing real-world problems.
26. What can we learn about Sansa and her team
A. They failed to enter the final round. B. They were really proud of the result.
C. They felt tired during the process. D. They were beaten by the top team.
27. Which of the following is a factor playing a part in her team's success
A. Creative thinking. B. Experience of failure.
C. Cooperative spirit. D. Responsible attitude.
C
“Second place is just the first loser” is a well-known saying from the legendary NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt. Or as my late father put it jokingly, “It's not enough to win. Your friends have to lose too.”
We may not want others to know our thoughts, but many of us think this way, because we are born to compete with each other. However, if left unmanaged, this can create disagreements between ourselves and others. Luckily, there is a way to solve this problem: Instead of always going for gold, try for the bronze(铜牌).
Although second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner, at least when it comes to happiness and lifetime. A 1995 study discovered that bronze winners appeared happier on average than silver medalists, while another research in 2018 studied US athletes in the Olympics from 1904 to 1936 and found that those whose best performance was silver lived to 72 on average. Gold medalists beat this by living to 76. But the first prize went to the bronze winners, who lived to 78.
The social concepts (概念) of upward and downward comparison help explain the difference. Silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they compare themselves only with the champions. In contrast, the bronze winners compare downwards with those who have never made it onto the podium (领奖台) at all. Therefore, they feel better about themselves and thus, happier. The feeling shows up in improved health and lifetime. In fact, researchers have found that comparing ourselves with the unlucky lot of others is a reliable way to reduce a negative mood.
Stop spending most of your time feeling like a silver medalist: always relying your happiness on a single result. Rather, go for healthy competitions in which you do your best without the expectation of being the absolute winner.
28. Why is the joke from the author's father mentioned
A. To show being competitive is unhealthy. B. To state that competition is common.
C. To prove everyone hides his thoughts. D. To explain there is no real friendship.
29. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed
A. By describing experiences. B. By doing interviews.
C. By making comparisons. D. By listing reasons.
30. What can be inferred about upward comparison
A. It makes people less confident. B. It leads to disagreements.
C. It contributes to happiness. D. It is a healthy competition.
31. What's the author's attitude towards working for gold
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Uncertain. D. Negative.

Queensland's Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has recently announced an increase of their SharkSmart drone (无人机) test to Palm Cove and Alma Bay in North Queensland, following successful tests in Southern Queensland. The new camera-equipped drones are giving Australian lifeguards an eye on the lookout for sharks and are designed to help keep popular coastal areas safe for humans—and safe for sharks.
For decades. Queensland has used baited hook drumlines (带饵钩的鼓线) and nets to protect swimmers and beachgoers from sharks, but these methods can also injure and kill sea life. Last year alone, that equipment caught 958 animals, including 798 sharks—70 percent of which died. Sixteen turtles also died along with 10 dolphins and 2 dugongs.
The SharkSmart drones fly at about 12 mph around 60 yards above the water beyond the surf break. The operators will fly them in 400-meter areas looking for sharks. When operators notice a shark, they lower the drones to 30 meters so they can identify (识别) the animal's size and species. But the task can become more difficult when it is raining or if the water is cloudy. Drones are effective visual shark identification systems that allow lifesavers to clear beaches at the sight of a shark. Drones can also help with identifying swimmers in danger and can be equipped to deploy personal flotation devices(漂浮装置), making them extremely useful for ensuring swimmers' safety at beaches beyond shark identifying.
“It's encouraging to see the progress towards improving swimmers' safety. There's still away to go yet though, sea animals are still at risk from being stuck in shark nets and on drumlines as they make their way along the Queensland coast.” said Dr Leonardo Guida, a shark scientist with AMCS.
32. What function is expected of the SharkSmart drones
A. To provide weather forecast. B. To protect sharks from humans.
C. To keep close track of sharks. D. To take photos of the coast.
33. What is the disadvantage of the SharkSmart drones
A. They will put sea life in great danger. B. They can't provide warning in time.
C. They run above the water at a fixed height. D. They may be influenced by the weather.
34. What does the underlined word “deploy” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Arrange. B. Destroy. C. Strike. D. Limit.
35. What's the best title for the text
A. Sea animals at extreme risk B. SharkSmart drones in progress
C. Sharks stuck in nets and drumlines D. Drone application above the water

My best friend Jenny and I have been close for eight years and spent almost every day with each other. When I was an awkward primary school student, she was the popular girl who was willing to make friends with me. Since then a close friendship has grown between us and she's been almost like a sister to me. Whether we're walking to school, doing homework or just hanging out at the weekend, we're hardly out of each other's sight.
I thought we would be like this forever, however, our friendship was on the rocks recently. Last Saturday, she broke my heart. Our original plan was to see a film at the cinema that afternoon. I was looking forward to watching the film and expecting to have great fun with her. But in the morning, Jenny posted a message on social media saying she had a cold and ran a fever, which made me really concerned about her. When I called her, she said she felt terrible and might not be able to make it to the cinema. “Don't worry,” I said. “Get some rest. We can wait till you get better.”
Monday morning, however, I received a horrible surprise. A classmate of ours told me that she had seen Jenny chatting with another girl in a cafe on Saturday afternoon. Never had I expected Jenny to cheat me. How stupid I was! My friend's “illness” was a complete lie!
Instead of recovering at home, she was out having fun with someone else.
Afterwards, I pretended to be cheerful and greeted others with a smile as usual, but I was so angry that I avoided her during school all day, and I didn't feel like replying to any of her online messages. The stress of this situation was killing me.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Determined to have a good talk with her, I gathered up my courage(鼓起勇气) and asked her to meet during lunch break. Holding Jenny's hands tightly, I felt a sense of relief and growing up.

An Impressive Travel Experience
Last summer, I went to Xi'an with my family by flight, which made a deep impression on me.
First, the two-hour driving tour took us to the Terracotta Army. Especially unbelievable is the story about how people in ancient times built the tomb. The next day, we visited Shaanxi History Museum and Xi'an City Wall. Tired as we were, we visited other famous sights, admired the architecture and enjoyed the excellent local food in the following two days.
Undoubtedly, the trip to Xi'an impressed me a lot.

Then she reached out her hands, her eyes shining with tears, and whispered, “We are still best friends, aren't we ”
Paragraph 2:
Holding Jenny's hands tightly, I felt a sense of relief and growing up. “Absolutely! Forever!” I announced, with my face expanding with a big smile. Having wiped away her tears, I hugged her tightly and we agreed to watch the film the next weekend. Though shaken by this incident for a while, our friendship became stronger later due to it in turn.
