However, 26-year-old Luke Cameron is not among those people. After losing a close friend known for her generosity (慷慨) and died of cancer in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed (好事) every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet.Cameron performed his first good deed on January 1st, 2014, with the simple act of greeting a waitress at a cafe he visited. The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people. Cameron’s good small deeds have been recorded in an online diary, like taking out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or spending a few hours helping a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. What’s more, the young man has also spent close to 4,000 of his own money, buying gifts for children in need.Cameron has created a series of some cards, which he has called “Cards for Kindness”. Each card suggests a simple act of kindness — things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy, which is to encourage others to perform good deeds.Cameron’s generosity has not gone unnoticed. To reward the young man as he nears the end of his journey, pizza chain Domino’s recently awarded him a year’s supply of free pizza. Not surprisingly, the big-hearted young man has decided to use the gift to hold special pizza days for charity. His kind deeds have also won him a competition for the job of “National Philanthropy (慈善事业) Manager”.4. What made Cameron decide to do good deeds every day A. The need of a competition. B. The requirement of his job.C. The influence of his families. D. The death of a close friend.5. What is the second paragraph mainly about A. The influence of simple acts of kindness. B. The good things that Cameron has done.C. The importance of having close friends. D. The prizes that Cameron has received.6. Why did Cameron create “Cards for Kindness” A. To record his good deeds. B. To make peace with an enemy.C. To raise money for some charities. D. To encourage people to show kindness.7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text A. No Pains, No Gains B. C【解析】【导语】这是一篇记叙文。 由第一段中的“After losing a close friend known for her generosity (慷慨) and died of cancer in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed (好事) every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet.(2013年,这位以慷慨著称的好朋友因癌症去世。之后,这位年轻人决定每天至少做一件好事,坚持365天,现在他还没有错过一件。)”可知,让Cameron决定每天做好事的是一个好朋友的死。故选D。【5题详解】主旨大意题。由第二段“Cameron performed his first good deed on January 1st, 2014, with the simple act of greeting a waitress at a cafe he visited. The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people. Cameron’s good small deeds have been recorded in an online diary, like taking out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or spending a few hours helping a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. What’s more, the young man has also spent close to 4,000 of his own money, buying gifts for children in need.(2014年1月1日,Cameron做了他的第一件好事,在他参观的一家咖啡馆里,他简单地问候了一位女服务员。 由第三段中的“Each card suggests a simple act of kindness -- things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy, which is to encourage others to perform good deeds.(每张卡片都暗示了一件简单的善举——比如给陌生人一个拥抱,或者与敌人讲和,这些都是为了鼓励别人做好事。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段的“After losing a close friend known for her generosity and died of cancer in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet.(2013年,这位以慷慨著称的好朋友因癌症去世。之后,这位年轻人决定每天至少做一件好事,坚持365天,现在他还没有错过一件。)”可知,本文主要讲述了Cameron因朋友去世而决定日行一善,最终获得人们称赞的故事,C项“A Good Deed Every Day(每天都做好事)”可作为最好的题目。故选C。CEngineers and scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas get clean drinking waterThey developed a low-cost gel film(凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest climate. Just one kilogram of gel can absorb up to six liters of water in a dry climate. For those living in a climate with relative humidity(潮湿), one kilogram of gel can collect up to 13 liters of water a day. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages.Previously, researchers have harvested fresh water from fog and dew, but that only serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water from desert air consume lots of energy and do not produce much. In fact, this gel is a big improvement from previous water harvesting technologies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel doubles this amount, uses no energy and is simple to operate and it can be molded into a shape or size that best suits the user.“This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driest places on Earth,” said Guihua Yu, professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “This could allow millions of people without consistent access to drinking water to have simple, water generating devices(取水装置)at home that they can easily operate.”“This is not something you need an advanced degree to use,” the paper’s lead author, Youhong “Nancy” Guo said. “It’s straightforward enough that anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.” Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the production, making this technology a practicable solution to drought.8. What do we know about the gel film from paragraph 2 A. It can increase the humidity of the air.B. It can harvest drinking water from the air.C. It has been widely applied in desert areas.D. It costs lots of money and energy to produce.9. What is Guihua Yu’s attitude towards the new water-harvesting method A. Indifferent. B. Skeptical.C. Disapproving. D. Hopeful.10. What does the underlined word “straightforward” in last paragraph mean A. easy. B. straight. C. frank . D. cheap11. What will scientists plan to do next A. Develop a thicker gel.B. Produce the gel on a large scale.C. Raise money for further research.D. Teach people to make the gel at home.【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. 根据文章第二段“They developed a low-cost gel film(凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest climate. Just one kilogram of gel can absorb up to six liters of water in a dry climate. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages.(他们研发了一种低成本的凝胶膜,这种凝胶膜即使在干燥的气候下也能从空气中吸水。在干燥的气候中,仅一公斤的凝胶就能吸收6升的水。因为这种凝胶价格低且易于制作,它可以为缺水国家提供饮用水。)”可知,这种凝胶膜可以从空气中获取饮用水,故选B。【9题详解】推理判断题。根据文章第四段““This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driest places on Earth,” said Guihua Yu, professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “This could allow millions of people without consistent access to drinking water to have simple, water generating devices(取水装置)at home that they can easily operate.”(科克雷尔工程学院的教授Guihua Yu说道:‘这一新发明是很实用的解决方法,地球上最热最干燥的地区的人们可以使用这个方法来获取水。这能让无法一直拥有饮用水的百万人在家就可以简单地操作这一取水装置。’)”可知,认为,Guihua Yu这一新的取水装置能满足无法获取饮用水的人的需求,故他对这一取水设备是充满希望的,故选D。【10题详解】词义猜测题。根据文章最后一段““This is not something you need an advanced degree to use,” the paper’s lead author, Youhong “Nancy” Guo said. “It’s straightforward enough that anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.”( Youhong “Nancy” Guo说道:‘这并不是需要你有高级学位才能使用的东西,它很简单,以至于如果有材料,任何人都能在家制作’。)”中straightforward一词的前后文的提示“This is not something you need an advanced degree to use(这并不是需要你有高级学位才能使用的东西)”“anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.(如果有材料,任何人都能在家制作)”可知,这一设备是任何人都能制作出来的,故此处的“straightforward”与A项“easy简单的”意思相近,故选A。 根据文章最后一段“Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the production, making this technology a practicable solution to drought.(科学家们正计划制作一个更厚的凝胶,以提高产量,使这项技术成为解决干旱的可行方案。)” A。DAccording to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “couch potato” first appeared in print in a December, 1979 edition of the Los Angeles Times. Since then, has become a familiar term for a person who spends a lot of time sitting, and little time exercising. Although there does not seem to be any particular reason why the term “couch potato” is used rather than “couch tomato” , a person may become a “couch potato” because living this way is said to make you round like a potato. The term is also said to have something to do with the high-calorie (卡路里) food like potato chips.People now would say “couch potato” whenever they talk about overweight and obesity (肥胖). Indeed, “couch potatoes” are believed to have heart disease risks, which can be avoided by regular exercise. It is true that technology and modern life in general make us sick, fat, lazy and physically/mentally soft. The more time people spend using technology, particularly televisions and computers, the less time they will spend being physically active.“Couch potato” kids are a particular concern. Media reports repeatedly claim that children today are fatter than their elder generations, but less athletically skilled, less interested in physical activities and more addicted (上瘾的) to “junk food” and technology such as televisions and computers. The message is clear: today’s children are fat because they are lazy and eat too much. Moreover, because technology is becoming more sophisticated (复杂的), children are less able to resist (抵抗,忍得住) technology’s attraction, and are more likely to spend more time using technology, less time doing physical activities and, therefore, more likely to be fat.12. The first paragraph is mainly about ________.A why “couch potato” is used as a term for a personB. when “couch potato” is used as a term for a personC. how “couch potato” is different from “couch tomato”D. what kind of person looks like a potato13. The development of technology also makes us sick because ________ by using technology.A. we are more likely to have heart disease risks in modern lifeB. we spend less time doing exerciseC. we needn’t do many things by ourselves any moreD. we spend all our time watching TV and playing computer games14. It’s kids’ ________ that people are particularly concerned about.A. food B. studyC. health D. hobby15. According to the passage, the author may suggest that ________.A scientists should stop their technology researchB. parents should take better care of their childrenC. kids should be stopped from using new technologyD. people should spend less time using technology【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. 根据第一段最后两句“a person may become a “couch potato”because living this way is said to make you round like a potato. The term is also said to have something to do with the high-calorie (卡路里) food like potato chips.(一个人可能会变成“沙发土豆”,因为据说这样的生活方式会让你像土豆一样圆。据说这个词还和薯片等高热量食物有关)”可知,第一段主要是介绍了人们会被叫做“沙发土豆”的原因。故选A项。 根据第三段“It is true that technology and modern life in general make us sick, fat, lazy and physically/mentally soft. The more time people spend using technology, particularly televisions and computers, the less time they will spend being physically active.(的确,科技和现代生活总体上让我们生病、肥胖、懒惰和身心虚弱。人们使用科技产品,特别是电视和电脑的时间越多,花在身体活动上的时间就越少)”可知,科技的发展使人们生病的原因是因为人们花费了很多时间在电视,电脑上,而很少进行身体锻炼。故选B项。【14题详解】细节理解题。根据第四段的一二句““Couch potato” kids are a particular concern. Media reports repeatedly claim that children today are fatter than their elder generations, but less athletically skilled, less interested in physical activities and more addicted (上瘾的) to “junk food” and technology such as televisions and computers.(“沙发土豆”类型的孩子尤其值得关注。 How to fit in with a new environmentWhen you step into a new environment, you must have a strong wish to fit in. The Best Man in BritainCEngineers and scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas get clean drinking water. They developed a low-cost gel film(凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest climate. Teach people to make the gel at home.DAccording to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “couch potato” first appeared in print in a December, 1979 edition of the Los Angeles Times.
