M: What do you think is the most important before a race
W: Well, there’s much to do. Take plenty of exercise to keep fit. Check the route in advance. And the most important I think is that you must make sure everything’s working on the bike. If there’s anything wrong with the bike, I’ll be in trouble. And the clothes shouldn’t slow you down so they need to be tight. They might feel a bit uncomfortable when you first put them on, but you will soon get used to it. I’m not bothered about not looking pretty—I just want to win.

【原文】W: Hello, this is Greenhill Studies College. I’m leaving this message in answer to your questions about the Business Studies course. Firstly, you asked when the course starts. It begins on the 12th of June, and finishes on the 11th of July. At the beginning of the course, there are no lectures because we spend time watching business videos. So you won’t need to bring anything for the class, as everything is provided. Don’t forget, however, that although you can bring your own notebook computer if you wish, mobile phones are not allowed in the classroom. I’m afraid these can disturb the classes. You said you’re coming by car. Well, as it’s only a short course, you can use the visitor’s car park which is just beside the main entrance. We’re only a short walk away. Just turn right after the Science Center, cross the staff car park, and you’ll see the door to the Business Studies Department in front of you. Finally, you also wanted to know if it’s possible to attend a language course while you are here. Well, the answer is yes, but we only have room on our Italian classes. Oh, no, actually...there’s one place on the Spanish course, too. We usually offer French, Chinese, German and Japanese as well, but there aren’t enough students for those classes this summer. If you want to apply for the course, please signup before the 5th of June. Thank you.

In August 2005, at the age of 14, Kristin Beale, together with her friend, was riding on Jet Ski on Lake Gaston, along the Virginia-North Carolina border, when another ran over them, killing her friend and making Beale suffer a brain injury and a spinal cord (脊髓) injury.
Previously, being a Henrico’s Deep Run High School student, Beale took part in the competitions of cheerleading and hockey. Afterwards, she had to relearn how to perform daily tasks. “When I was in the hospital, doctors told my parents I’d be a vegetable, not being able to breathe or swallow. I wanted to disprove everything they had on their list,” she said. “I told my parents, ‘I’m going to work and do more’.”
Her parents discovered a hospital in California for people struggling with spinal cord injuries and flew Beale there to spend four hours a day for more than a month relearning tasks and strengthening her muscles. She traveled to California nine times for this.
To process her thoughts, Beale began writing about her experiences. By the time she finished, she’d written32 stories. She then gathered them into her first nonfiction book, Greater Things, which was about how people react to her and how she has overcome her injuries. “I never thought it’d become a book, but that’s how it all started,” Beale said.
Now in 2023 working for her publisher, Morgan James Publishing in Hampton, Beale continues to write. Another nonfiction book, A Million Suns, details her journey “from the darkness of disability into the sunlight of circumstance” and how she has found happiness. In her new fiction offering, Wide Awake, she assigns names and personalities to 12 objects belonging to a young girl, Madison.
Additionally, Beale has created the first episode (集) of a YouTube show based on her book Date Me, medaled as a wheelchair fencer and finished 16 marathons with a wheelchair since 2011.“I’ve worked hard to get to where I am,” she said.
24. What can we learn about Beale from paragraph 2
A. She refused the treatment. B. She used to be an active girl.
C. She lost confidence in life. D. She had trouble in breathing.
25. Why did Beale go to California
A. To experience life. B. To look for a job.
C. To work on recovery. D. To meet her parents.
26. What is Beale’s nonfiction book Greater Things based on
A. Her thoughts about writing. B. People’s account.
C. Stories about the disabled. D. Her own experiences.
27. Which words best describe Beale according to the text
A. Optimistic and determined. B. Creative and humorous.
C. Ambitious and considerate. D. Helpful and courageous.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. A

Maybe you’re someone who runs 20 to 30 miles a week but regularly gets fast food for dinner. The idea of eating anything you want without consequences might sound like a good dream. But the reality is that exercise cannot completely change the effects of a bad diet, experts say.
“Skinny fat” is the unofficial term used to describe a person who looks slim but has a high percentage of body fat. A regular gym goer could have little subcutaneous fat—the fat right under your skin—but lots of visceral(内脏) fat. A buildup of visceral fat from eating processed food high in sugar and salt could lead to the same type of risks as an overweight person, according to Dr. Colin Carriker, an exercise physiologist from Highpoint University in North Carolina.
If you want to lose weight, the key is to develop a caloric deficit in which you burn calories more than what you’re consuming. But eating high calorie fatty food regularly can make this a hard nut. “You are overconsuming calories and will have to do more exercise than a person can sustain on a long-term basis,” Carriker said.
One idea would be to spend more time exercising or joining in a more intense workout. But this plan doesn’t really work said Grace Derocha, a registered dietitian, because processed food like so da and candy have few nutrients, and with a lack of vitamins, protein(蛋白质) and fiber to fill you up, it’ll be hard to think about working out when you’re constantly feeling hungry.
Of course, being healthy doesn’t mean you have to give up all the food you enjoy eating. Instead of feeling guilty for ordering dessert, Derocha says you can think of food as more than just calories but as the kind of energy it can provide. If you’ve had enough fiber today, look at where you add in extra protein. “It’s not good or bad food; it’s just fuel,” she said. “When you look at it from an addition standpoint instead of a restriction standpoint, it’s a healthier approach to fueling yourself.”
28. What does Dr. Colin Carriker most probably agree with
A. Gym goers like processed food best. B. Visceral fat causes less harm to people.
C. People can look thin but still be unhealthy. D. People exercising regularly are actually fit.
29. Which is closest in meaning to “hard nut” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Disorder. B. Target. C. Trend. D. Challenge.
30. What might happen to people who often eat processed food
A. They have little motivation or drive to exercise.
B. They are enthusiastic about intense workouts.
C. They obtain much more energy to burn calories.
D. They work productively due to being energetic.
31. What does Derocha probably suggest
A. Staying away from junk food. B. Changing your views about food.
C. Being active to keep energetic. D. Fueling yourself with strict diets.
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. A 31. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。经常运动但是饮食不健康同样会对人的身体健康产生一定的影响。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第二段“Skinny fat” is the unofficial term used to describe a person who looks slim but has a high percentage of body fat. A regular gym goer could have little subcutaneous fat—the fat right under your skin—but lots of visceral(内脏) fat. A buildup of visceral fat from eating processed food high in sugar and salt could lead to the same type of risks as an overweight person, according to Dr. Colin Carriker(“Skinny fat”是一个非官方的说法,用来形容一个人看起来很瘦,但身体脂肪含量很高。
根据“If you want to lose weight, the key is to develop a caloric deficit in which you burn calories more than what you’re consuming.(如果你想减肥,关键是要养成热量不足的习惯,在这种情况下,你燃烧的卡路里要多于你摄入的卡路里)”以及划线处前“But eating high calorie fatty food regularly can make this a(但是经常吃高热量、高脂肪的食物会使这种情况发生)”but表示转折,可知,经常吃高热量高脂肪的食物会让减肥变得很困难。划线处和D项:Challenge(挑战)含义相近。故选D。
30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“But this plan doesn’t really work, said Grace Derocha, a registered dietitian, because processed food like so da and candy have few nutrients, and with a lack of vitamins, protein(蛋白质) and fiber to fill you up, it’ll be hard to think about working out when you’re constantly feeling hungry(但注册营养师格蕾丝·德罗查(Grace Derocha)说,这个计划并不奏效,因为像豆糖和糖果这样的加工食品几乎没有营养,而且缺乏维生素、蛋白质和纤维来填饱你的肚子,当你经常感到饥饿时,很难想到去锻炼。)”可推断,经常吃加工食品的人没有坚持运动的欲望。故选A。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Instead of feeling guilty for ordering dessert, Derocha says you can think of food as more than just calories but as the kind of energy it can provide.(德罗查说,不要因为点了甜点而感到内疚,你可以把食物想象成不仅仅是卡路里,而是它能提供的能量。)”可推断,Derocha建议人们要改变对食物的观念。故选B。

Sohabati Devi grows rice and vegetables in the village of Dodhghat in Uttar Pradesh, India. One night, floods drowned her fields. Thankfully, she’d planted a special type of rice. Scientists had improved its DNA to contain a specific bit of genetic (基因的) material called SUB1A, which helps rice plants survive being completely drowned for two weeks. Indeed, after the flood went away, roughly half of Devi’s rice crop was still alive. Now some scientists don’t just want to help crops survive climate change. They’re looking to develop crops that actively fight climate change.
During photosynthesis (光合作用), plants turn CO from the air into the carbon-rich sugar and oxygen they need. Plants also send carbon into the soil through their roots. However, plants “can’t use all the sunlight when full sun is shining on the leaves,” notes Krishna Niyogi, a biologist at UC Berkeley. Actually, too much sunlight can damage plant cells. To guard against this, plants have something like a safety valve (阀). If it could react to changing light faster, plants could get more sun energy, Niyogi says.
Three proteins control the opening and closing of those safety valves. To increase the levels of these proteins, Niyogi’s team added three genes into tobacco plants. The result was that plants grew 14-20% larger than usual. This is important as larger plants store more carbon.
Encouraging photosynthesis to pull more CO from the air is a great start to ward helping farms fight climate change, but this removal is short-term. When a plant dies, microbes in the soil eat it. Those microbes then put off CO and other greenhouse gases, which return to the air. The deeper plant roots grow into the soil, though, the longer it takes that carbon to make its way back out again. “The roots are the vehicle to actually store the carbon and take it out of the atmosphere,” says Wolfgang Busch, a biologist at the Salk Institute in San Diego, California.
From root surveys and other studies, Busch has identified around 50 genes that help plants grow deeper, bigger roots.
32. What helped Devi’s crops survive the flood
A. The enough sunlight. B. The crops’ big roots.
C. A certain gene. D. Scientists’ immediate help.
33. Why did Niyogi’s team try to increase the levels of the three proteins
A. To offer leaves’ safety valves more protection.
B. To quicken a plant’s response to changing light.
C. To make it easier to add the genes into the plants.
D. To develop a certain plant with healthier leaves.
34. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph
A. It is hard for roots to take carbon out of the atmosphere.
B. Removing carbon through photosynthesis is an easy process.
C The soil underground plays a crucial role in absorbing carbon.
D. Plants with deeper roots can be better for long-term carbon storage.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Crops Are Being Engineered to Handle Changing Climate
B. Plants Have Many Ways to Absorb Carbon From the Air
C. Crops Work Very Effectively in Fighting Climate Change
D. Plants Are Proved to Be Great Carbon-absorbing Heroes
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍为了使农作物适应不断变化的天气,科学家们对农作物进行基因改造。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第一段中“Sohabati Devi grows rice and vegetables in the village of Dodhghat in Uttar Pradesh, India. One night, floods drowned her fields. Thankfully, she’d planted a special type of rice. Scientists had improved its DNA to contain a specific bit of genetic (基因的) mate rial called SUBIA. which helps rice plants survive being completely drowned for two weeks.(Sohabati Devi在印度北方邦Dodhghat村种植水稻和蔬菜。一天晚上,洪水淹没了她的田地。谢天谢地,她种了一种特殊的水稻。科学家们改进了它的DNA,使其含有一种叫做SUBIA的特殊基因。这有助于水稻在完全被淹没的情况下存活两周。)”可知, Devi种植的是一种特殊的水稻,这种水稻里面含有的一种叫作SUB1A的基因帮助农作物在洪水中存活下来。故选C项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Actually, too much sunlight can damage plant cells. To guard against this, plants have something like a safety valve (阀). If it could react to changing light faster, plants could get more sun energy, Niyogi says.(事实上,过多的阳光会损害植物细胞。为了防止这种情况,植物有一个类似安全阀的东西。Niyogi说,如果它能更快地对变化的光做出反应,植物就能获得更多的太阳能。)”和第三段中“Three proteins control the opening and closing of those safety valves. To increase the levels of these proteins, Niyogi’s team added three genes into tobacco plants.(三种蛋白质控制着这些安全阀的开启和关闭。为了增加这些蛋白质的含量,Niyogi的团队向烟草植物中添加了三种基因。)”可推断, Niyogi团队增加三种蛋白质含量是为了加快植物对阳光的反应速度。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第四段k中“The deeper plant roots grow into the soil, though, the longer it takes that carbon to make its way back out again.(然而,植物根系在土壤中生长得越深,碳再次返回土壤所需的时间就越长。)”可推知,根系发达的植物能更好地长时期储存碳。故选D项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“Scientists had improved its DNA to contain a specific bit of genetic (基因的) material called SUBIA, which helps rice plants survive being completely drowned for two weeks.(科学家们改进了它的DNA,使其含有一种叫做SUBIA的特殊遗传物质,这种物质可以帮助水稻在完全淹没的情况下存活两周。)”、第三段“To increase the levels of these proteins, Niyogi’s team added three genes into tobacco plants.(为了增加这些蛋白质的含量,Niyogi的团队向烟草植物中添加了三种基因。)”和最后一段“From root surveys and other studies, Busch has identified around 50 genes that help plants grow deeper, bigger roots.(从根系调查和其他研究中,Busch已经确定了大约50个基因,这些基因可以帮助植物长出更深更大的根。)”可推知,全文主要介绍农作物基因正在被改造以适应不断变化的气候,所以“农作物正在被改造以应对气候变化”是文章最佳标题。故选A项。

Ray was holding the cup in his hand as he stared out of the window. He was a re gular lunch customer on Mondays and Fridays.
“Can I refill the cup for you, Ray ” I asked. He looked up with a peaceful smile and held his cup out toward me. “You know, I’ve been coming here for several years, and I have to say you have the nicest smile,” he whispered. “Can you sit for minutes... please ”
I sat down and he smiled, “Your smile reminds me of my granddaughter, Sharon.” He took out a picture of her from his wall et and handed it to me. “She graduated from college last year.”
“What a nice-looking girl!” I said. “Does she live near you ”
Ray shook his head as he put the picture back in his wallet. “She moved to California last year. I miss her a lot. She and I used to have lunch together on Monday s and Fridays,” he said. “She now wants me to move out there to be closer to her.”
“So, why don’t you ”
“I don’t know if I really want to move. I’ve been here all my life,” he answered.
I heard my boss calling me. “I guess that’s meant for me,” I said as I stood up.
We smiled at each other. “Ray……if my grandfather had been like you, I’d have asked him day and night to move closer to me, too.” I patted his shoulder. “Don’t wait too long. Nice talking with you...”

Now in 2023 working for her publisher Morgan James Publishing in Hampton, Beale continues to write.

C They obtain much more energy to burn calories.
D. They work productively due to being energetic.
31. What does Derocha probably suggest
A. Staying away from junk food. B. Changing your views about food.
C. Being active to keep energetic. D. Fueling yourself with strict diets.
D
C. The soil underground plays a crucial role in absorbing carbon.

I’d been waitressing for months, earning extra money for college. “Since it’s not too busy, go and see if Ray wants any more coffee,” my boss said to me as he pointed to an older man sitting in the corner.
For the next couple of weeks, Ray continued to come on Mondays and Fridays. But on that Monday of Thanksgiving week, he didn’t show up. Then one Wednesday afternoon, walking out to my car after work, I heard a voice call my name from across the parking lot.
