Jacky Hunt-Broers ma who lost one leg to cancer, is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon runs. She set her goal in mid-January. And since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon. Most of the time, she averages just over five hours to complete a run. If she keeps successfully completing marathon runs every day, she will reach her goal by April 28.
Until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. Currently, she runs on an artificial leg made of a strong, light material known as carbon fiber. The material, which is designed specially for running, costs about $10, 000.
But Jacky says her investment has been well worth it. The biggest struggle used to be that she had to admit part of her body was gone. “Running really changed my life,” she said. “It helped me accept myself as an amputee (截肢者). It gave me a sense of freedom. I fell in love with the process of pushing my body further just to see what I could do.”
However, she has faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, Jacky said she felt like giving up at 24 kilometers and began to cry. “I had a total emotional breakdown. I was like, ‘I just can’t do this.’” she said.
Jacky is documenting her progress online and has also gained a large social media following. As she nears the end of her goal, Jacky is hoping to inspire a single thought in others. She tells people, “You’re stronger than you think and you’re able to do so much more.”

How would you go without your smartphone For many of us, our smartphone is the first and last thing we look at every day. We depend on it to perform a number of tasks and connect with our friends and family. But have we become addicted to our phones
Certainly, the inventor of the first mobile phone. American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested people quit scrolling (刷屏) and “get a life”. But of course, once we start scrolling or watching videos, we just can’t kick the habit. Psychologist Jean Twenge says we feel regret for “checking our phone again and again if we’re waiting for a text or getting really into social media then kind of, looking up and realising that an hour has passed.”
But does it matter if we make the most of this technology Possibly, because like medicine, the problem appears when it is withdrawn. A study from King’s College London found young people couldn’t control the amount of time they spend on their phone. Such behaviour means that people become “anxious” or “upset” if they are not allowed to be on the phone continuously, which can cause anxiety and mental health problems.
Interestingly, another study by the London School of Economics Science suggests we don’t just look at our phones when we receive text or email messages. The people they studied felt an automatical (自动的) need to check their phone, just as a smoker would light a cigarette.
One solution could be an app that rewards (奖励) students for time spent away from their phones. Another choice is changing your smartphone to a dumbphone that has none of the things that turn your attention away. But mainly, perhaps, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!
18. What is Martin Cooper’s attitude to focusing on smartphones
A. Uncaring.
B. Doubtful.
C. Unclear.
D. Unacceptable.
19. What does the underlined word “withdrawn” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Stopped.
B. Increased.
C. Offered.
D. Saved.
20. What is the author’s key suggestion in the last paragraph
A. Concentrate on studies.
B. Get a reward for offline time.
C. Buy a new smartphone.
D. Contact with the real world.
21. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Benefits from Smartphones
B. Addiction to Smartphones
C. Development of Smartphones
D. Disadvantages of Smartphones
D
“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medicaljoumal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection (感染). Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be due to a small decrease in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of rumor on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality (性格) and may influence the way people cope with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when feeing challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to cope with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”
22. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Humor could benefit people’s health.
B. Joyflil women can live longer than happy men.
C. Women who seldom laugh may fall ill easily.
D. Humor makes people pay more attention to their health.
23. The reason for men having a higher risk of death from infection than women is that ________.
A. men have poor memories as they age
B. men become less humorous as they grow older
C. men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older
D. men take part in fewer social activities as they age
24. How does the author show the research findings
A. By listing data.
B. By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments.
D. By making experiments.
25. Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with
A. Humoriess people have an unhappy childhood.
B. Children must learn to be humorous at an early age.
C. Humorous people can better deal with pressure in life.
D. Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education.

A. to listen B. to have listened C. to be listening D. to be listened

本题强调时间状语only when the car pulled up in front of our house。故选B。
点睛:本题考查强调句,要求有学生掌握好强调句的常用句型以及相关知识的能力。分析句子时首先要看清楚结构,It is / was…开头而后面跟句子时就要看它是不是强调句了。强调句有一个特点:拿掉It was/is…that…后不影响整个句子的完整性,则是强调句。判断完是不是强调句后再根据强调的部分是人还是物来选择连接词that或者是who。

Jacky Hunt-Broers ma, who lost one leg to cancer, is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon runs.

【答案】18. D 19. A 20. D 21. B

A. men have poor memories as they age
B. men become less humorous as they grow older
C. men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older
D. men take part in fewer social activities as they age
