【原文】W: Welcome to Class 2 and I am your professor Sophie. Now I will talk about heightism. You may not have heard of heightism before. But it’s like other ‘ism’s, like racism and sexism which stress a particular kind of unequal treatment people experience. Tanya is a lawyer and writer. She speaks about her book on the BBC radio program. She talks first about our general feelings about height. She says no one wishes they were shorter. She also says tall people enjoy being tall, and they get great satisfaction from it. And she also says many people show off their height. This means they like to say they are taller than they actually are. She explains how some research has shown shorter people are less likely to get jobs, less likely to get promoted and less likely to earn as much as taller people. One set of data showed that the extra benefit for height is over $2,000 per inch for men and $1,800 for women. And over time that difference grows greatly. And this difference between the salaries of taller and shorter people is only an example of heightism.

For the brave in the armed forces, being sent away from home for months at a time is just part of the duty. However, it’s never an easy one to perform especially for those with children. So, when I found out I was going to stay in South Korea for a year, I was nervous about how my five children, particularly my eldest daughter Abigail, would take the news since it meant I wouldn’t be home to see her graduate from high school.
To my surprise, Abigail told me not to worry and even suggested we make the news known among family members. “We’ve been lucky you haven’t had to be sent abroad yet. Anyway, we can get connected through the Internet. See me on your phone on my spot.” Abigail said. She stepped into many of my roles when I was gone. I wanted to find a way to thank her and show her how proud I was of her. I started planning the special surprise when my request to return home a few weeks earlier to attend Abigail’s graduation ceremony was approved.
When my time in South Korea finally came to an end, I flew home, rented a car, and stayed in a hotel. And on Abigail’s graduation day, I hid in an office behind the stage waiting until I heard my daughter’s name called. I just kept thinking “Don’t cry. Don’t trip in your heels. Don’t fall over.” At last! Abigail was up on stage. I slipped up behind her, whispered in her ear, and around she turned! “I was just thinking, like, ‘You aren’t supposed to be here. What What How ’ It was the biggest shock... I’m pretty sure my dad made people he didn’t even know cry. Emotional for everyone.” Abigail cried.
You know what followed: embraces, kisses, tears, laughs, flowers, wishes...; aren’t they what a family have in store

You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It’s the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed by Mozart, they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search reveals (透露) plenty of products to help you in the task. Whatever your age there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that sparked (引发) real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we’ll become more intelligent.
The idea took off with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart’s music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them to produce better milk.
I’ll leave the debate on the effect on milk yield to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies proved that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 1
A. Mozart composed many musical pieces for children.
B Children listening to Mozart will be more intelligent.
C. There is little scientific evidence to support Mozart effect.
D. There are few products on the Internet about Mozart’s music.
29. The underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggests that ________.
A. the idea was accepted by many people B. people were strongly against the idea
C. the US government helped support the idea D. Mozart played an important part in people’s life
30. It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A. people will become more clever if they listen to Mozart’s music again and again
B. listening to Mozart’s music can bring us benefits constantly
C. we can get some benefits from listening to Mozart’s music
D. the author is positive about Mozart’s effect
31. What would be the best title for the passage
A. To Be or Not to Be B. What Music Is Beneficial
C. What Is the Mozart Effect D. Listening to Mozart, Necessary
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. C 31. D

【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第一段中“Whatever your age there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.(无论你的年龄是多少,都有CD和书籍可以帮助你感受莫扎特音乐的力量,但当涉及到科学证据表明它可以让你更聪明时,情况就更复杂了)”和最后一段“More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies proved that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent.(虽然进行了更多的研究,但对16项不同研究的分析证明,听音乐确实能暂时提高大脑处理形状的能力,但这种好处是短暂的,也不会让我们变得更聪明)”可知,文章介绍许多人相信听莫扎特的音乐会让人更聪明,但研究表明这种影响是短暂的,并不能让人们更加聪明。由此可知,D选项“听莫扎特,有必要吗?”最符合文章标题。故选D。

In what’s believed to be a first London’s Imperial College Business School is using holographic technology (全息技术) to present lectures to students. From California a product manager was beamed onto a stage like magic. The head of Imperial’s EdTech Lab says, this presents a window to the world. Through holograms(全息图) we can bring in lectures from across the globe, and they can appear in front of our students in a realistic manner. That’s the key.
The developer of the technique explains how it works. “We are presenting a 2D image as a 3D image, and the iris (虹膜) is flat so we see everything in 2D. Our brain changes it to 3D. We’re doing exactly the same trick. We’re presenting a 2D image but with depth of field and a really good vision. My brain just changes it to a 3D image.” Attendees say there are many ways this tool can help educators and students.
The second thing we could do with that is having CEOs coming to the classroom, and engaging with students. And the third way probably is maybe to have Albert Einstein coming to the classroom. There might be a long wait for that. Meanwhile, master student Josephine Collins says she prefers the interaction a hologram lecture offers compared to those presented online.
I wouldn’t mind it. I think it’s very interesting if we can have access to different lectures and different things like guest speakers. That’s something I would definitely enjoy. Developers say the cost of holographic technology has dropped considerably since the days it was used mostly in big-budget music shows, making it possible for educational institutions to afford it.
32. According to this passage, holographic technology mainly benefits _________.
A. lectures B. commerce(商业) C. education D. science
33. How does holographic technology work
A. Our sight changes a 2D image into a 3D image. B. Our brain turns a 2D image into a 3D image.
C. Our brain presents a 2D image as a 3D image. D. Our brain is so flat that we see everything in 2D.
pared to the lectures presented online, a hologram lecture _________.
A. brings Albert Einstein back to life B. allows the lecturer to interact with students
C. has CEOs exposed to the open air D. is more available whenever and wherever you are
35. What is the author’s attitude towards holographic technology
A. Supportive. B. Opposing. C. Objective. D. Neutral.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. A

(表达尊重的一个重要方式是对父母重要的事情表示尊重。对于年龄较小的孩子,这可能意味着不会触及珠宝或其他有价值的东西。)”可知,本空要说跟“父母的东西”有关的话题,所以G选项“For grown children, respect may mean returning a borrowed tool in good condition and on time. (对于成年孩子来说,尊重可能意为着按时归还借的东西。)”能承接上文。选项中的For grown children与文中的For younger children相对应。故选G。
【38题详解】
根据小标题“Punctuality. (准时)”和下文“Therefore, always be on time. (因此,一定要准时。)”可知,本空要说跟“时间”有关的话题,C选项“Lateness shows a lack of respect. (迟到表明缺乏尊重。)”衔接下文。选项中的Lateness与文中的on time相呼应。故选C。
【39题详解】
根据下文“Remembering birthdays, anniversaries and other special days is a sign that you honor your parents. Make plans to take them to lunch or dinner or bake a cake or cookies. Most parents don’t expect expensive gifts, but a handmade gift is always appreciated. a phone call from a grown child who lives too far for a visit is a welcome sign of respect. (记住生日、纪念日和其他特殊的日子是你孝敬父母的表现。制定计划,带他们去吃午餐或晚餐,或者烤蛋糕或饼干。大多数父母不希望收到昂贵的礼物,但手工制作的礼物总是受欢迎的。一个住得太远而无法拜访的成年孩子打来电话是一种受欢迎的尊重。)”可知,本空要说跟“特殊日子”有关的话题。所以B选项“Celebrate with them. (和他们一起庆祝。)”符合本段的小标题。选项中的celebrate与文中的“Remembering birthdays, anniversaries and other special days is a sign that you honor your parents”相对应。故选B。
【40题详解】
结合小标题“Be kind. (要善良)”和上文的“Never talk back or be rude or disrespectful. Acknowledge your parents' achievements. (永远不要顶嘴,也不要粗鲁无礼。承认父母的成就。) ”上面提到对父母要有耐心,不要讲粗鲁的话,也就是说要好好对待父母。所以D选项“Treat your parents the way you would like to be treated. (按照你想要对待的方式对待你的父母。)”能承接上文。故选D。
阅读下面材料,根据其内容从所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项,补全材料最后两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I opened the door and was welcomed as usual by Shredder. He ran towards me, jumped up and put a paw on my shoulder. “Okay, boy,” I said, rubbing his ears the way he liked. He moved his tail happily. I usually played with him all day. But with so many things on my schedule these days—meetings, dinners, many houses to clean—I didn’t have time. I told Shredder to lie down.” I have to get to work now,” I said. I headed downstairs to clean the bedroom. All of a sudden, pain shot through my head. It was unlike anything I’d ever felt—10 times worse. Things dropped out of my hands, and I fell to the ground. I knew someone who had died from a brain aneurysm (脑部动脉瘤).
I had to get help before it was too late. I should call 911, but the nearest phone was in the kitchen. I tried to stand up, but couldn’t. I knew I had to get upstairs. It felt like my head was going to explode. I managed to move to the kitchen. But later I couldn’t move anymore. I was helpless. Through the sharp pain, I looked up. Shredder stared back at me from the top step. Did he think I was playing ” Come here,” I whispered, trying to make my voice sound playful. He stared with doubt.” Come on. boy,” I said. Shredder ran down the steps and stood next to me. His tail stopped moving. “Help me, Shredder,” I said, holding his collar (颈圈) with my left hand. He climbed a step and then stopped. “Up!” I said. He looked back at me as if to say, “Is this right ” “Go,” I whispered. He started to drag me. My left arm went frozen. I had to look at Shredder’s collar to make sure I kept my hold.
Para1: Shredder got me to the top of the steps.
________________________________________41________________________________________.
Para2: The medical workers gave me a quick check.
_________________________________________42_________________________________________.
A. After taking the medicine, I felt much better. The medical workers told me excitedly that I suffered the abrupt pain just because of the high-stress working. What I really needed was to have a rest. So they advised me to take several days off. From then on, I started to take good care of my body. And the most important thing I learnt was that more time should be spent with my little life saver Shredder, so I bought a cat to stay with us.
B. Then I started to move with difficulty. Shredder pulled and dragged, taking me to the kitchen. Finally I managed to reach the phone and called 911. Shredder sat down next to me. “Good boy,” I whispered. The medical workers showed up in minutes. Shredder jumped to his feet and started barking. “It’s OK.” I said. He seemed to understand that they were here to help, and sat back down.
C. Both of us were tired and breathless. I felt half of my body went frozen. With a strong desire to survive, I whispered to him, “Come on, boy, go to find your favourite cans.” His eyes sparkled and his tail moved wildly when he heard the word “cans”. Leaving me behind, he ran towards the kitchen excitedly. Now I took out my phone, and called 911. After that, I closed my eyes to have a rest.
D. “What’s wrong with you ” One worker asked. “My head is paining me,” I told her. Then they discovered a brain problem, which could cause extreme pain in my head. After four days, I left the hospital and went home. Shredder was happy to see me, moving his tail happily. And I was so moved that I hugged him tightly. It was the dog who saved my life and I was extremely grateful to him for his help.

When my time in South Korea finally came to an end I flew home, rented a car, and stayed in a hotel.

The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music.
A Mozart composed many musical pieces for children.
B. Children listening to Mozart will be more intelligent.
C There is little scientific evidence to support Mozart effect.
D. There are few products on the Internet about Mozart’s music.

A. people will become more clever if they listen to Mozart’s music again and again
B. listening to Mozart’s music can bring us benefits constantly
C. we can get some benefits from listening to Mozart’s music
D. the author is positive about Mozart’s effect
31. What would be the best title for the passage
A. To Be or Not to Be B. What Music Is Beneficial

A. Supportive. B. Opposing. C. Objective. D. Neutral.
