Having lived in California until 1970, my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however, to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.
There is a website that lists all California earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude(震级) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0.
There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.
The second one was in 1963Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the famous landmark.
My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a little prayer—something like, “Help me get out of here in time, Dear Heavenly Father”. Minutes later, I was safe outside.

A. was staying with his daughter B. was planting fruit trees
C. held on to a tree for hours D. was in a hotel

Some people don’t know whether to learn American English or British English. Here is my answer to it.
It’s really, really hard to pick up a native-sounding accent if you learn English as an adult. Children pick up accents very quickly, but adults don’t. Even after speaking English every day for twenty or thirty years, you’ll probably keep a bit of a foreign accent. I’ve met many English learners who’ve lived abroad for several years in an English-speaking country. For the most part, I can’t tell what country they’ve lived in unless they tell me.
Since it’s so hard to learn an accent, you probably shouldn’t spend a lot of time trying to guide yours to one accent or the other. There are better ways to use your time, like learning new vocabulary or phrases.
Even if you are able to get an American or British accent, it won’t make much difference. That’s because English speakers are used to hearing different accents. Americans hear British accents on TV and movies. And we all hear accents from other countries: Russian accents, Korean accents, French accents, and so on. Usually, British people like the way that Americans sound, and Americans like the way that British people sound. So you’re OK either way.
So just pick whatever language is most convenient for you. If you have friends or teachers from America, you should probably learn American English. If you have British friends or coworkers, maybe it’s better to learn British English.
It’s probably easiest to stick with just one kind. However, there’s nothing wrong with mixing a bit of British and American English together. It won’t hurt you!
32. The author mentions English learners in Paragraph 2 to show .
A. it’s hard to speak like native speakers B. the author isn’t good at telling accents
C. people don’t like speaking with an accent D. people like to live abroad to learn a language
33. What does the author think English learners should do
A. Choose a special country to live in. B. Make use of time to learn new words.
C. Tell the differences between accents. D. Learn British accents through movies.
34. Paragraph 4 mainly shows that .
A. there are many accents in the world
B. which accent to learn isn’t that important
C. American and British accents aren’t very different
D. Americans and British people understand each other
35. The author thinks mixing some British and American English together is .
A. okay B. necessary C. wrong D. dangerous
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. B 35. A
【解析】

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“There are better ways to use your time, like learning new vocabulary or phrases.(有更好的方法来利用你的时间,比如学习新的词汇或短语)”可知,作者认为学英语的人应该好好利用时间多学一些新词汇。故选B。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Even if you are able to get an American or British accent, it won’t make much difference. That’s because English speakers are used to hearing different accents. Americans hear British accents on TV and movies. And we all hear accents from other countries: Russian accents, Korean accents, French accents, and so on. Usually, British people like the way that Americans sound, and Americans like the way that British people sound. So you’re OK either way.(即使你能学会美国口音或英国口音,也不会有太大区别。那是因为说英语的人习惯听到不同的口音。美国人在电视和电影中听英音。而且我们都听到过其他国家的口音:俄罗斯口音、韩国口音、法国口音等等。通常,英国人喜欢美国人的发音方式,美国人喜欢英国人的发音方式。所以不管怎样你都没问题)”可知,第四段主要说明学习哪种口音并没有那么重要。故选B。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“However, there’s nothing wrong with mixing a bit of British and American English together. It won’t hurt you!(不过,把英式英语和美式英语混在一起也没什么错。无伤大雅)”可知,在作者看来,混合一点英音和美音是可以接受的。故选A。

I am really sorry to hear that you feel bad after entering the high school. You should remember that your classmates are also new there and facing the same problem, so you don’t have to worry too much about it.
There is also something that you can do to change this situation. First, try to invite some of your classmates to take part in some activities together after school. This will help you understand each other better by communicating with others. Then, help others when they are in trouble, and ask them to help you when you have difficulty.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh, yes ... but I don’t have money on me ...”she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it ” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!”said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared with a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled and said, “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands.“Why did l not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the door. “Where could my mother be ” she wondered, “Was she still angry with me ” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.

The second one was in 1963.Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California.
24. The author writes the passage mainly to tell us about ________ .
A. a new film about an earthquake B. how to survive an earthquake
C. his three earthquake experiences D. how to save children in an earthquake
25. The earthquakes the author has experienced________.
A. all caused bodily harm B. are all recorded in a website
C. all measured more than 6.0 D. all happened in California
26. When the first earthquake happened, the author________.
A. was staying with his daughter B. was planting fruit trees
C. held on to a tree for hours D. was in a hotel
27. What does the underlined part “the famous landmark” refer to
A. A church. B. Disneyland.
C. A building destroyed by an earthquake. D. The place where the author was born.

A. there are many accents in the world
B. which accent to learn isn’t that important
C. American and British accents aren’t very different
D. Americans and British people understand each other
35. The author thinks mixing some British and American English together is .
