Later this month, Tate Britain will host its first Van Gogh exhibition since 1947. Here we've rounded up 4 of his best paintings before the show.
Potato Eaters
Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum (精神病院), where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn't bear his signature, it's widely known to be Van Gogh's, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field With Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital.' Van Gogh was 80 pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same size—which hangs in the National Gallery and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister.
21. Which painting did Vincent van Gogh take most pride in
A. Irises. B. Potato Eaters.
C. Cafe Terrace at Night. D. Wheat Field With Cypresses.
22. What is the original color of the flowers in Irises
A. Purple. B. Blue. C. Red. D. Yellow.
23. What do the last two paintings have in common
A. They were the same in size. B. They had more than one copy.
C. They were signed by the artist, D. They were painted on the ground.

I am Fionn Ferreira, an Irish teenager. I am very delighted to have won $50,000 for my project. My project came about as I was constantly hearing about plastic pollution on the news. And I also see the real effects on our beaches every day. I discovered, to my shock, that at present no filtration (过滤) for microplastics takes place in any European wastewater treatment centers, so I started looking for a solution.
Seeing that there was none, I decided to investigate further, finally finding a way to use the feerofluid (铁磁流体), a liquid which sticks to the plastic allowing it to be removed using magnets(磁铁). After over 1,000 tests I have proved that my method would remove 87% or higher of microplastics.
I grew up in West Cork Ireland. My hometown is surrounded by untouched nature. This has been my primary inspiration about how nature works. I soon discovered that science really was in everything. The fact that I lived in such a remote place meant that I had to build my own equipment and lab to conduct tests and experiments.
Inspired by scientists such as Ben Feringa and his work with organic chemistry and nanotechnology (纳米技术), I would like to study chemistry or chemical engineering when finishing my last year of secondary school. Both of these subjects will be suited to me as I really enjoy problem-solving and experiments.
One of the most valuable rewards from the science fair for me is the opportunity to present my work to a group of professional judges. Winning the prize is a great honour to me as this is an acknowledgement of my project and ideas.
Also, winning the prize will give my project more attention. There is nothing I would like to see more than my project to be used in addressing microplastics in our oceans worldwide.
24. What do we know about Fionn
A. He lives by the sea. B. He discovered plastic pollution.
C. He works for a science fair. D. He was born in America.
25. Fionn set up the project to________.
A. Clean the beaches. B. Investigate the feerofluid.
C. Remove microplastics from water. D. Collect plastic wastes.
26. Which word can best describe Fionn
A. Humorous. B. Honest. C. Competitive. D. Creative.
27. What is Fionn looking forward to most
A. Getting tests and experiments conducted.
B. Having his project acknowledged by the judges.
C. Attracting more attention to his project.
D. Seeing his project applied widely in real life.

In the past five years, about 2.8 billion of school textbooks were sold per year, with total spending of 20 billion yuan ($3 billion), news magazine Outlook Weekly reported, citing data released recently by the National Press and Publication Administration.
If these textbooks are reused for one year, the costs saved can be used to help build around 40,000 Hope Schools in impoverished regions.
The figures show that in 2018, the number of retailed textbooks for primary and secondary schools was 2.93 billion copies, totaling 25.99 billion yuan. If all of them are reused, a total of over 20 billion yuan will be saved per year.
Zhao Dehua, in charge of a company recycling resources, said many college graduates sell the textbooks they have accumulated over the years at an average price of 1 yuan per kilogram. As these textbooks are mostly used to produce recycled paper, the cost is even higher than that of raw paper as the processing procedure of recycled paper is complicated.
At present, free textbooks related to music, art and P.E for the nine-year compulsory education have been reused, but account for less than a fraction of the total number of textbooks. Because of the supply chain obstruction, which increases the costs to match supply with demand, the lack of sound platform and service supporting system for the second-hand textbook trade, most of the textbooks used for compulsory education and higher education end up as waste.
“Every year, second-hand booksellers collect textbooks at a price of about 4,000 yuan a ton, which is more than twice the price of ordinary waste paper, but the number of people who come to collect second-hand books is still few,” Zhao Dehua said.
Besides, the incomplete policies and regulations might bring second-hand book sales platforms and sellers to legal risks.
“Establishing the system of textbook recycling can not only save resources, but also help to cultivate students’ consciousness and sense of responsibility,” said Zhu Pin, deputy head of a school of nine-year compulsory education in Jiangxi province. The school has set up a system for reusing the textbooks and the books are disinfected every week.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. College students sell textbooks in order to make profits.
B. Recycled paper is mainly used for environmental considerations.
C. The cost of recycled paper is greater than that of raw paper.
D. Certain groups of collectors tend to choose second-hand textbooks.
29. What is the problem of reusing textbooks
A. It is blocked because of lack of funds.
B. The supply of recycled textbooks is not adequate to meet the demand.
C. The regulation of second-hand textbooks has not been carried out yet.
D. A large number of second-hand textbooks are not used properly.
30. What measures does the school take to use the second-hand textbooks
A. The school frees recycled textbooks from bacteria regularly.
B. The school proposes regulations for wasting second-hand textbooks.
C. The school calls on students to participate in the system of textbook recycling.
D. The school requests the government’s support.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Textbooks recycled for less waste
B. Recycled textbooks used for compulsory education
C. Reusing textbooks good for environment and wallet
D Reusing textbooks good for collection

A British energy supplier has apologized for the “poorly judged and unhelpful” advice sent to customers which suggested they could snuggle(依偎) up to their pets and exercise to cut back on their heating bills.
SSE,which is owned by OVO Energy, suggested 10 “simple and cost effective ways to keep warm this winter,” according to the Financial Times. Eating bowls of oatmeal, doing star jumps and cuddling(搂抱) pets were among the recommendations on the now-deleted web page.
In a statement sent to CNN Tuesday, a spokesperson for OVO Energy said, “Recently a link to a blog containing energy saving tips was sent to customers. We understand how difficuIt the situation will be for many of our customers this year.” The spokesperson added, “We are working hard to find meaningful solutions as we approach this energy crisis, and we recognize that the content of this blog was poorly judged and unhelpful. We are embarrassed and sincerely apologize.”
Some British businesses and households have seen their energy bills rise in recent months, as suppliers deal with a sharp rise in wholesale gas prices. British consumers will pay roughly 790 more to heat and light their homes this year, according to Bank of America. Wholesale European gas prices have jumped by 400% over the previous year and electricity prices have increased by 300%, the bank’s analysts said last week. The increases have been driven by cold weather, nuclear plant outages in France and reduced gas flow from Russia.
According to National Energy Action, more than 4 million UK households are facing fuel poverty—a figure which the charity believes could rise by 2 million in April when a cap(上限) on energy prices is expected to increase.
OVO Energy removed its advice after a wave of angry responses from lawmakers and campaigners(运动参与者). Following the apology, British lawmaker Darren Jones, who chairs Parliament’s business select committee, tweeted: “Good, I’m glad they apologized. I’m not sure who signed off a marketing campaign telling people to wear a jumper and eat porridge instead of turning on the heating if you can’t afford it.”
32. Why did OVO Energy apologize for its advice on the ways of keeping warm sent to customers
A. The ways are too costly.
B. The ways are too simple.
C. The suggestions are difficult.
D. The suggestions are ineffective.
33. Which is the result of the energy crisis for British
A. Energy bills rise too sharply in winter for most UK households.
B. All customers can afford the increasing price of coal.
C. The British government has found meaningful methods to face it.
D. The energy crisis have been driven by cold weather.
34. How did Darren Jones feel about the apology in the last paragraph

【原文】A four-year-old girl surprised the audiences all over the world when she spoke seven languages fluently on a TV show.
Della participated in the Russian reality TV show Incredible People, impressing judges in Moscow with her remarkable language skills. Besides her native Russian, Della speaks English, German, Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic. That includes the six official United Nations languages with the addition of German. Instead of just having some simple small talks, Della is actually able to communicate in these languages. During the show she managed to answer questions based on the school curriculum in all these languages. Della’s mother started teaching her daughter English at the age of two but as soon as she noticed that Della was interested in it, she began to let her daughter be tutored by native speakers for other languages.
Language specialists have been just as impressed as Della’s global audiences. One language expert was quoted as saying, “Such cases are rare but have happened in the past.” He believes that Della will not lose her knowledge but warns at some point it can become frozen if she does not continue to use and practice it.

【答案】21. B 22. A 23. D

I grew up in West Cork, Ireland.
C Remove microplastics from water. D. Collect plastic wastes.
26. Which word can best describe Fionn
A. Humorous. B. Honest. C. Competitive. D. Creative.
27. What is Fionn looking forward to most
A. Getting tests and experiments conducted.
B. Having his project acknowledged by the judges.
C. Attracting more attention to his project.
D. Seeing his project applied widely in real life.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. D 27. D

D. Reusing textbooks good for collection
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. A 31. C

【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中一家资源回收公司的负责人Zhao Dehua所说的“As these textbooks are mostly used to produce recycled paper, the cost is even higher than that of raw paper as the processing procedure of recycled paper is complicated.”(由于这些教材主要用于再造纸的生产,再造纸的生产工艺复杂,成本甚至比生纸还要高。)可知,再造纸的成本比生纸的成本高。故选C项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“At present, free textbooks related to music, art and P.E for the nine-year compulsory education have been reused, but account for less than a fraction of the total number of textbooks. Because of the supply chain obstruction, which increases the costs to match supply with demand, the lack of sound platform and service supporting system for the second-hand textbook trade, most of the textbooks used for compulsory education and higher education end up as waste.”( 目前,九年制义务教育免费的音乐、美术和体育课本已经被重新使用,但在课本总数中所占比例还不到一小部分。
根据最后一段最后一句“The school has set up a system for reusing the textbooks and the books are disinfected every week.”( 学校建立了一个重复使用课本的系统,每周对课本进行消毒。)可知,学校定期对课本进行灭菌来回收课本。故选A项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第二段“If these textbooks are reused for one year, the costs saved can be used to help build around 40,000 Hope Schools in impoverished regions.”(如果这些教科书被重复使用一年,节省下来的成本可以用来帮助贫困地区建设大约4万所希望学校。)和第三段“The figures show that in 2018, the number of retailed textbooks for primary and secondary schools was 2.93 billion copies, totaling 25.99 billion yuan. If all of them are reused, a total of over 20 billion yuan will be saved per year.”( 据统计,2018年全国中小学教科书零售量为29.3亿册,总计259.9亿元。如果全部回收利用,每年可以节省200多亿元。)以及最后一段江西省九年制义务教育副校长Zhu Pin所说“Establishing the system of textbook recycling can not only save resources, but also help to cultivate students’ consciousness and sense of responsibility.”(建立教材回收制度不仅可以节约资源,而且有助于培养学生的责任意识和责任感。)可知,文章主题是“重复使用教科书有利于保护环境和节约资源”,所以选项C“重复使用教科书对环境和钱包都有好处”适合做文章标题。故选C项。

B. All customers can afford the increasing price of coal.
C. The British government has found meaningful methods to face it.
D. The energy crisis have been driven by cold weather.
34. How did Darren Jones feel about the apology in the last paragraph
A. Nervous. B. Angry. C. Pleased. D. Concerned.
35. Where is this passage probably from
A. A travel brochure. B. A newspaper. C. A health magazine. D. A science fiction.
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. B

He walked for hours, cold and hungry. Suddenly, a delicious smell caught his attention. It was from a small noodle shop. Stephen stopped in front of the shop, eager for a bowl of hot noodles but he didn’t have even a single penny in his pocket. With a sad face, he stood there for a minute and decided to leave.
Just when he was about to go away, the shop owner saw him and invited him in. Stephen said he had no money for the food. The shop owner smiled, saying, “It’s OK. I won’t charge you for it.” Then the shop owner served him a bowl of delicious noodles.
