Okay, now for some news about our annual charity auction evening. Unfortunately, we can’t use the Forest Hotel again, as it’s being re-decorated, but we’re very excited about getting into the Park Hotel for the auction this year. It’s located opposite the station. We have an exciting range of things to sell this year, but we’d always welcome more items. The final day is next Thursday.
All money from this year’s events goes towards helping local homeless people. We intend to use the money from the auction to build a new training centre, where homeless people can come to learn new skills. It’ll be next to the existing hotel and you can see the plans in the office. Please give your names to the secretary before the day of the event.
We’ve also got some fantastic items in this year’s auction as usual. But the dinner at the new restaurant — the City Lights is new this year. We’re expecting the most interest in the tickets to The Big Thing, as this fantastic festival is now sold out. We’re also very excited about the day pass to the local adventure park for younger ones. Now then, we have enough people to help with seating, but we are looking for some volunteers to help with the coffee. If you think you can do this, please contact Mr. Baker. We’re sure it’s going to be a huge success ...

When I was a teen of 16 years old, I used to make more friends because of my outgoing nature. But unfortunately, I also had the most misunderstandings with them. However, I have not lost any of my friends over these disagreements.
Once I bought a few books to read in my free time during the summer vacation at high school. One evening during the vacation, two of my friends visited my home. After having some small talk, one of them started looking at my library that I had built since my childhood. He picked up one of the books that I had just started reading in the morning. It was Thomas, one of my best friends in high school. I helped him a lot with his mathematics for the exam before the summer vacation.
The disagreement with him began when he wanted to take the book home. The book named An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser was his first choice. I tried to make him realize that I had just started reading it before they arrived at my home and had just finished one-fourth of the book. But it seemed that he was also crazy about the book. He was determined to take it. Samuel, the other friend of mine sat quietly and saw us argue with each other.
The argument continued for about 15 minutes, and I tried to ask him to take some other books. He looked sad, saying that after he started reading the story, he really didn’t want to miss the chance to complete the book. Finally, I gave up and let him take the book on one condition: he should return the book just after he finished reading it and also would not lend it to someone else (he had lost most of his books lending them to others) as he did earlier with my books.
24. What happened to Thomas soon after he arrived at the author’s home
A. He thought of a children’s book.
B. He argued with Samuel over a book.
C. He was attracted to one of the author’s books.
D. He remembered leaving his book in the library.
25. Why did the author want to continue reading An American Tragedy
A. He enjoyed it very much.
B. He was a fan of the writer.
C. He read it for the final exam.
D. He planned to research into it.
26. How did the author solve the disagreement with Thomas
A. He told him the story of the book.
B. He decided to lend him the book.
C. He gave him another book by the same writer.
D. He let him look through the book before leaving.
27. What can we say about Thomas
A. He doesn’t have any friends. B. He is good at mathematics.
C. He always keeps his word. D. He doesn’t give up easily.
C 25. A 26. B 27. D
根据文章第三段“After having some small talk, one of them started looking at my library that I had built since my childhood. He picked up one of the books that I had just started reading in the morning. It was Thomas, one of my best friends in high school. (在聊了一会儿天后,他们其中的一个就开始看我从小建立的图书馆。他拿了其中一本,这本是我早上才开始读的。他就是Thomas,他是我高中最好的朋友之一。)”可知,到达作者的家后不久,Thomas就被作者的其中一本书所吸引,故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“But it seemed that he was also crazy about the book. He was determined to take it.(但是似乎他也喜欢这本书,他下定决心要拿走它。)”
根据文章最后一段“Finally, I gave up and let him take the book on one condition: he should return the book just after he finished reading it and also would not lend it to someone else (he had lost most of his books lending them to others) as he did earlier with my books.(最终,我放弃了,并让他把书带走,不过有一个条件:他一读完这本书就要把书还给我,并且不能像以前那样将书转借给别人。)”
根据文章最后一段“The argument continued for about 15 minutes, and I tried to ask him to take some other books. He looked sad, saying that after he started reading the story, he really didn’t want to miss the chance to complete the book. Finally, I gave up and let him take the book on one condition(争吵持续了15分钟,我尽力劝说他拿其他的书。他看起来很伤心,说道,从他一开始读这本书,他就不想要错过读完整本的机会。最终,我放弃了,并让他把书带走,不过有一个条件)”可推知,Thomas想要借这本书,并与作者僵持了很久,最终得到了作者的同意,因此Thomas是一个不会轻易放弃的人,故选D。
C
For years now, economists have predicted a gradual move to what is called a “cashless society”. Most payments are already made by putting a plastic card into a machine and entering a PIN code (个人密码), or by simply waving the card in front of the machine. But is a “cashless society” something we should look forward to
Well, for one thing cash is expensive. We often pay fees when we use cash machines — people in the UK together pay almost 6 million a month in cash-machine fees. Cash also spreads disease. Dr Peter Ender, who carried out a study looking at the bacteria on one-dollar bills, claims that “paper money is usually full of bacteria and a dollar bill could, theoretically, be the magic carpet it rides on from one host to another”. And of course, there’s always a record of digital money, so it makes it harder for people to steal it.
However, some psychologists argue that waving your card in front of a machine doesn’t give us a real sense of paying. Likewise, when we make one click with our mouse when shopping online, it’s easy to forget that the credit card bill will arrive at the end of the month. Basically, with a credit card we don’t feel the “pain of paying”. In a cashless society, we tend to buy more than we need to, because it’s easier to spend and the consequences of our spending are more remote from us.
And it’s certainly still possible and even easier to cheat and steal in a cashless society. In a psychological test, people were twice as likely not to forgo a dishonest digital payment as a dishonest cash payment. Once again, psychologists suggest that the sense of being remote from payment in a cashless society increased the likelihood of dishonesty.
While we might laugh at the idea of our grandparents with money hidden under the mattress (床垫), maybe the joke is on us. Without doubt, it’s a world where we feel distanced from the consequences of the purchases we make. So perhaps we’re more efficient in our cashless society, but are we any happier
28. What can we infer from Dr Peter Ender’s claim
A. Cash is full of magic. B. Cash is irreplaceable.
C. Cash is extremely dirty. D. Cash is expensive to produce.
29. What will happen when people use credit cards according to psychologists
A. They will spend more unwisely. B. They will become more dishonest.
C. They will be in pain on the bill’s arrival. D. They will feel distanced from their real life.
30. What does the underlined word “forgo” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Make. B. Afford. C. Ignore. D. Reject.
31. What does the text mainly discuss
A. What can cash bring to us B. Is it time to give up on cash
C Is it possible to keep our cash safe D. Why do we live in a cashless society
C 29. A 30. D 31. B
由第二段的“paper money is usually full of bacteria and a dollar bill could, theoretically, be the magic carpet it rides on from one host to another(纸币通常充满细菌,理论上,一美元纸币可能是它从一个宿主传播到另一个宿主的魔毯)”可知,Dr Peter Ender认为纸币覆满了细菌,容易传播疾病。
由第三段的“Basically, with a credit card we don’t feel the “pain of paying”. In a cashless society, we tend to buy more than we need to, because it’s easier to spend and the consequences of our spending are more remote from us.(基本上,使用信用卡我们不会感到“付款的痛苦”。在一个没有现金的社会里,我们往往会购买比我们需要的更多的东西,因为这更容易消费,而且我们消费的后果离我们更遥远。)”可知,心理学家认为使用信用卡时人们感觉不到支付的痛感,因而花钱就会不理智。故选A项。
由划线词前的“And it’s certainly still possible and even easier to cheat and steal in a cashless society.
Is it time to give up on cash
D
If you’ve spent any amount of time boating, fishing, or bird-watching at lakes and rivers, you have most likely seen fishes jumping out of the water. I have seen it many times. Certainly, fishes will exit water in desperate attempts to escape enemies. Dolphins take advantage of the behavior, forming a circle and catching the frightened fishes in midair. But just as we may run fast from fun or from fear, different emotions might motivate fishes to jump.
Mobula rays(蝠鲼)aren’t motivated by fear when they throw their impressive bodies—up to a seventeen-foot wingspan (the distance from the end of one wing to the end of the other) and a ton in weight—skyward in leap(跳跃)of up to ten feet. They do it in schools(鱼群)of hundreds. They usually land on their bellies, but sometimes they land on their backs. Some scientists think it might be a way of removing parasites(寄生虫). But I think that the rays are enjoying themselves.
In the clear waters of Florida’s Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, I watched several schools of fifty or more mullets(鲻鱼)moving in beautiful formation. Their well-built bodies were most evident when they leaped from the water. Most of the time I saw one or two leaps by a fish, but one made a series of seven. They usually land on their sides. Each jump was about a foot clear of the water and two to three feet in length.
Nobody knows for sure why the fish leaps. One idea is that they do it to take in oxygen. The idea is supported by the fact that mullets leap more when the water is lower in oxygen, but is challenged by the likelihood that jumping costs more energy than is gained by breathing air. It is hard to imagine they will feel any fresher when back in water.
Might these fishes also be leaping for fun There is some new evidence. Gordon M. Burghardt recently published accounts of a dozen types of fishes leaping repeatedly, sometimes over floating objects—sticks, plants, sunning turtle—for no clear reason other than entertainment.
32. What can we say about the dolphins in Paragraph 1
A. They have great escaping skills. B. They are easily frightened.
C. They are very clever. D. They love jumping.
33. What do the ray and the mullet have in common when jumping
A. Both do it in groups. B. Both land on their bellies.
C. Both jump many feet out of water. D. Both make leaps one after the other.
34. How does the author feel about the idea mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. It is valuable. B. It is interesting.
C. It is imaginative. D. It is questionable.
35. Which may be the reason for fish leaps according to the author
A. To remove parasites. B. To amuse themselves.
C. To take in more oxygen. D. To express positive emotions.
C 33. A 34. D 35. B
由第一段中的“Dolphins take advantage of the behavior, forming a circle and catching the frightened fishes in midair.”( 海豚利用这种行为,围成一个圈,在半空中抓住受惊的鱼。)
由第二段中的“They do it in schools(鱼群)of hundreds.”( 蝸鲼成群跳跃。)和第三段中的“I watched several schools of fifty or more mullets(鲻鱼)moving in beautiful formation.”( 我看到几个由50只或更多的鲻鱼组成的鱼群以美丽的队形移动。) 故选A项。
由第四段中的“It is hard to imagine they will feel any fresher when back in water.”( 很难想象当它们回到水里时会感觉更新鲜。)
由第二段中的“But I think that the rays are enjoying themselves.”( 但我觉得它们很享受光线。)和最后一段中的“Gordon M. Burghardt recently published accounts of a dozen types of fishes leaping repeatedly, sometimes over floating objects—sticks, plants, sunning turtle—for no clear reason other than entertainment.”(Gordon M.Burghardt最近发表了一系列关于十几种鱼类反复跳跃的报道,有时是在漂浮的物体上,树枝,植物,晒海龟,除了娱乐之外,没有其他明确的原因。)
如在第1小题中,第一段中的“Dolphins take advantage of the behavior, forming a circle and catching the frightened fishes in midair.”,是已知部分,通过结合原文进行合理地逻辑判断,可以得出海豚能够巧妙地吃掉跃出水面的鱼,说明它们很聪明。故选C项。

上文“I have the same 24 hours in a day as you do, but 1 have made specific choice that allow me to make the most of every day and still feel happy and relaxed.( 我和你一样,每天都有24小时,但我做了具体的选择,让我充分利用每一天,仍然感到快乐和放松)”说明作者做出选择,充分利用每一天,但仍旧感到快乐和轻松,根据下文段落小标题可知,下文就如何充分利用每一天给出了建议,因此空格处应是承上启下,F项中的“help you make the most of your time”与上文“to make the most of every day”一致,“tips”引出下文的建议,因此F项“也许这些建议会帮助你充分利用你的时间”符合语境,承上启下。故选F。
根据段落标题“Pick the most important.”可知,本段建议挑选最重要的,下文“Focus on spending time that for you is fun and productive.( 把时间花在那些对你来说有趣和富有成效的事情上)”说明要挑选一些有趣的和富有成效的事情去做,D项中的“what is meaningful in your life”与标题中的“the most important”一致,下文是对“Make choices”具体解释。
上文“Many people go crazy trying to figure out how to spend time with friends, family, work, play, etc.( 许多人疯狂地试图弄清楚如何在朋友,家庭,工作,娱乐等方面度过时间)”说明许多人想要弄清楚在生活中如何分配好时间,下文“Find ways to enjoy them in a combined manner.( 找到一种结合的方式来享受它们)”说明可以把事情组合在一起享受,因此推断空格处与上文是转折关系,说明不要试图均衡时间,C项“不要试图在它们之间平衡时间”符合语境。
根据下文“You would think learning takes more time from you, but actually there are always new ways of doing things that can save you time on daily tasks, freeing you up for the most important. Always be looking for a new way to gain back an hour here or there. Always be looking for a new way to gain back an hour here or there. (你可能会认为学习需要花费了你更多的时间,但实际上总有一些新的方法可以为你节省出做日常事务的时间,为你腾出时间去做最重要的事情。寻找在这里或者那里赢回一个小时的新方法)”可推断,本段讲述学习虽然花费很多时间,但总是能有一些方法为你节省时间做其他事情,因此要做有效的学习者。因此推断B项“做有效的学习者”为段落标题,故选B。
【40题详解】
下文“Every completion is a small victory that adds up in a big way.( 每一次的完成都是一个小的胜利,累积起来就是一个大的胜利)”说明事情要一件一件去做,G项中的“making lists”与之呼应,因此推断G项“这就是为什么列清单在任何生产手册中都很重要的原因”符合语境,this指代上文“The world won't come to an end in most cases just because you left a few things undone. Celebrate progress and keep refining (改进) toward a happy productive existence.( 在大多数情况下,世界不会因为你没做完几件事而走向末日。庆祝进步,不断改进走向一个快乐而富有成效的存在)”解释了列出清单一件一件完成任务的原因。故选G。

25 Why did the author want to continue reading An American Tragedy

C. Is it possible to keep our cash safe D. Why do we live in a cashless society

A It is valuable. B. It is interesting.
C. It is imaginative. D. It is questionable.
35. Which may be the reason for fish leaps according to the author
A. To remove parasites. B. To amuse themselves.
C. To take in more oxygen. D. To express positive emotions.
