A lot of people are scared of spiders (蜘蛛) and consider their webs to be dirt. But, growing up in Argentina and Italy, I remember seeing webs in the corners of my house and thinking they were gorgeous. Today I create works of art using these beautiful structures.
In my studio, I have a collection of spider webs and hundreds of different spiders. I spend a lot of time experimenting with them. I put a spider in a box and observe how it goes about constructing its web. I sometimes turn the box on its side to see how the spider reacts. Sometimes I put another spider in the box to see how it works with the structure the last one left in place. It may ignore that web and start again from scratch (从头开始) or begin adding to it.
I worked on digitizing webs. Though I see myself as an artist, I actually trained as an architect and the idea is to compare the properties of spiders’ webs with architectural structures to see if there are any similarities.
Of the thousands of species around the world, the one that interests me the most is the Stegodyphus dumicola. In groups, they make thousands of single threads (线), which are then entangled (缠) into a giant web that can lift the spiders straight up and transport them away. It is known as “ballooning”. During the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, for example, I exhibited the vast “aerocene” globes based on it. They aren’t sculptures but rather air-filled bubbles (气泡) that might one day float around the world, powered only by wind and the heat of the sun. I use them to challenge popular ideas about energy use and transportation.
My ambition is to take my work with spiders to the International Space Station, to conduct live experiments to see how they might behave and how they would build webs in a new environment without gravity. I am speaking to NASA about it. I hope to turn them into spidernauts.
4. What does the underlined word “gorgeous” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Beautiful. B. Complex. C. Annoying. D. Strange.
5. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. How the author developed an interest in spiders’ webs.
B. How the author observed spiders constructing webs.
C. How the author produced digitized webs.
D. How the author collected different spiders.
6. What can we learn about vast “aerocene” globes
A They can float around the world freely now.
B. They support popular ideas about energy use.
C. They take inspiration from a type of spider’s web.
D. They are already powered only by wind and the heat of the sun.
7. What is the author’s great goal
A. Becoming an astronaut.
B. Experimenting with spiders in space.
C. Coming up with smart strategies against climate change.
D. Finding the similarities between spiders’ webs and architectural structures.
A 5. B 6. C 7. B
划线词句后文“Today I create works of art using these beautiful structures. (今天,我用这些美丽的结构创作艺术作品)”说明作者认为蜘蛛网的结构很美丽,从而推知句“But, growing up in Argentina and Italy, I remember seeing webs in the corners of my house and thinking they were gorgeous. (但是,我是在阿根廷和意大利长大的,我记得我在家里的角落里看到蜘蛛网时,觉得它们很gorgeous)”其中划线词汇意思是“美丽”。故选A项。
根据第二段中“I put a spider in a box and observe how it goes about constructing its web. I sometimes turn the box on its side to see how the spider reacts. Sometimes I put another spider in the box to see how it works with the structure the last one left in place. (我把一只蜘蛛放在一个盒子里,观察它是如何织网的。我有时会把盒子翻过来看看蜘蛛的反应。有时我会在盒子里放另一只蜘蛛,看看它是如何与最后一只蜘蛛的结构一起工作的)”可知,本段的主要内容是关于作者是如何观察蜘蛛织网的。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“In groups, they make thousands of single threads (线), which are then entangled (缠) into a giant web that can lift the spiders straight up and transport them away. It is known as ‘ballooning’. During the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, for example, I exhibited the vast ‘aerocene’ globes based on it. (成群结队的蜘蛛会织出成千上万条单线,这些单线会缠绕在一起,形成一张巨大的网,可以直接把蜘蛛抬起来,然后把它们运走。它被称为‘热气球运动’。例如,在巴黎举行的联合国气候变化会议上,我展示了基于它的巨大的‘aerocene’地球仪)”可知,巨大的“aerocene”地球仪从一种蜘蛛网中获得灵感。故选C项。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“My ambition is to take my work with spiders to the International Space Station, to conduct live experiments to see how they might behave and how they would build webs in a new environment without gravity. (我的抱负是把我对蜘蛛的研究带到国际空间站,进行现场实验,看看它们在没有重力的新环境中会如何表现以及如何织网)”可知,作者的伟大目标是在太空中对蜘蛛进行实验。故选B项。

Thanks to social media, we are more active in our virtual world than we are in real life. Whether we are out with friends or sitting at home, we are glued to our mobile phones. We document almost everything we do, cook, and eat — but not without editing first and adding some filters (滤镜). While you might be engaging in this behaviour for fun, researchers from Florida State University, revealed a direct link between posting edited photos on Instagram and risk factors for eating disorders.
Specifically digitally editing pictures to improve personal appearance before posting them on Instagram increased weight and shape concerns in college students. Posting photos contributed to greater anxiety and increased urges to restrict food intake and exercise compared with not posting photos.
“As more people turn to social media to stay connected, it’s critically important to let others see you as you pared with edited photos, we saw no decrease in the number of likes or comments for unedited photos on Instagram; knowing this could reduce harmful pressures to change how you look,”said co-author Pamela K Keel.
Too much social media use has long been associated with promoting disordered eating behaviours as well as other mental health issues. So, using a two-stage design, the present study tried to figure out how posting edited photos relates to eating disorders, as well as anxiety and depressive symptoms (抑郁症状), in college students.
In stage one, the research team examined associations between posting edited photos and mental health measures in 2,485 undergraduates. While in stage two, they examined associations between posting edited photos and eating disorder risk factors in 80 undergraduates who supported posting edited photos in stage one and volunteered for the experimental portion of the study.
The findings showed that those who supported posting edited photos reported greater disordered eating behaviours and anxiety than those who did not, but no differences were found for depressive symptoms.
8. Why does the author mention people’s obsession with phones in paragraph 1
A. To lead up to the research topic.
B. To describe various leisure activities online.
C. To introduce his attitude towards social media.
D. To explain the way people document their lives.
9. Which statement will Pamela probably agree with
A. Instagram users prefer edited photos.
B. It is critically vital to be seen on social media.
C. People’s connections on Instagram are stronger.
D. Editing photos has no impact on popularity levels.
10. What did the two-stage study show
A. College students exhibited plenty of eating disorders.
B. A large portion of undergraduates supported posting edited photos.
C. No depressive symptoms were found in undergraduates in stage two.
D. Supporters of posting edited photos displayed higher levels of mental health problems.
11. Where can the text be found
A. In a book review. B. In a health magazine.
C. In a company brochure. D. In a photography guide.
A 9. D 10. D 11. B

由文章第三段“As more people turn to social media to stay connected, it’s critically important to let others see you as you pared with edited photos, we saw no decrease in the number of likes or comments for unedited photos on Instagram; knowing this could reduce harmful pressures to change how you look,(随着越来越多的人转向社交媒体来保持联系,让别人看到你的真实面貌至关重要。与经过编辑的照片相比,我们看到Instagram上未经编辑的照片的点赞或评论数量没有减少;我们知道这可以减少改变你外表的有害压力。)”可知,Pamela认为未经编辑的照片的点赞或评论数量没有减少,所以换句话说,编辑照片对受欢迎程度没有影响。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段“The findings showed that those who supported posting edited photos reported greater disordered eating behaviours and anxiety than those who did not, but no differences were found for depressive symptoms.(研究结果显示,那些支持发布经过编辑的照片的人比那些不支持的人报告了更大的饮食紊乱和焦虑,但在抑郁症状方面没有发现差异。)”

D
A study published by Girlguiding has revealed that half of girls feel restricted by gender (性别) stereotyping, with children as young as seven believing they are valued more for their appearance than for their achievements or character. It is no coincidence (巧合) that in the same week, another study has shown a quarter of girls exhibit symptoms of depression by the age of 14.
By the time humans reach adolescence (青春期), there will be distinct differences between male and female brains. Traditionally, psychologists assume this is because men and women are naturally different, which has led to a widespread cultural belief that, left to their own devices, girls would naturally fall to pink things and baking, avoiding “manly” activities such as sports and science.
What this assumption fails to take into account is the phenomenon of “ neuroplasticity (神经可塑性)”, combined with gender stereotypes. Brain development is decided by what we do, and therefore if adults guide children towards certain activities based on their gender, they influence how their minds grow.
As someone who visits more than 150 schools throughout the UK every year, I've noticed that girls in a single-sex environment tend to be more confident and more likely to develop an interest in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). I put this down to the fact that, in a single-sex school, there can be no such thing as “girl” and “boy”subjects. It gives us an insight into what society might be like if we levelled the playing field.
I try not to use gendered terms such as “girls”, “boys” or “ladies” when giving classes in schools. Teachers can only give young people the tools they need to challenge harmful cultural values that damage self-esteem (自尊) and mental health if there is sufficient space within the school week to encourage discussion and debate.
The mainstream media can assist in this effort. After all, while a girl growing up in 2017 may have received the message that it is possible for her to become a leader of the government, she will also have learnt that how her legs look in a pencil skirt still matters.
12. What is the hidden connection between the two studies
A. They both focused on 14-year-olds.
B. Their findings are the cause and effect of each other.
C. The findings from one study support the results of the other.
D. They used a similar methodology to research different phenomena.
13. What is the author’s attitude towards psychologists’ assumption in paragraph 2
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Favourable. D. Disapproving.
14. Why are the girls in single-sex schools more confident according to the author
A. They develop stronger interests in STEM subjects.
B. They are given girl-targeted teaching approaches.
C. They stay away from traditional gender expectations.
D. They are involved in various confidence-boosting activities.
15. What does the last paragraph imply about the mainstream media
A. It has put much emphasis on political issues.
B. It has done well in establishing beauty standards.
C. It can prevent young girls from achieving powerful roles.
D. It holds a profound influence on girls' beliefs about gender roles.
C 13. D 14. C 15. D
由文章第一段“A study published by Girlguiding has revealed that half of girls feel restricted by gender (性别) stereotyping, with children as young as seven believing they are valued more for their appearance than for their achievements or character. It is no coincidence (巧合) that in the same week, another study has shown a quarter of girls exhibit symptoms of depression by the age of 14. (《女孩指南》发表的一项研究显示,一半的女孩觉得自己受到性别刻板印象的限制,7岁的孩子就认为,她们更看重外表,而不是成就或性格。在同一周,另一项研究显示,四分之一的女孩在14岁之前表现出抑郁症状,这并非巧合)”可知,两项研究相互支持对方。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第三段“What this assumption fails to take into account is the phenomenon of “neuroplasticity (神经可塑性)”, combined with gender stereotypes. Brain development is decided by what we do, and therefore if adults guide children towards certain activities based on their gender, they influence how their minds grow. (这种假设没有考虑到的是“神经可塑性”现象,以及性别刻板印象。大脑的发育是由我们所做的决定的,因此,如果成年人根据孩子的性别引导他们进行某些活动,他们就会影响他们的思维发育)”可知,作者不赞成心理学家在第2段中的假设——男生女生天生不同。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段中“I put this down to the fact that, in a single-sex school, there can be no such thing as “girl” and “boy” subjects. It gives us an insight into what society might be like if we levelled the playing field. (我把这归结为这样一个事实:在单性别学校里,不可能有“女孩”和“男孩”之分。它让我们了解到,如果我们公平竞争,社会将会是什么样子)”可知,作者认为,单性别学校的女生更自信,因为她们远离传统的性别期望。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段“The mainstream media can assist in this effort. After all, while a girl growing up in 2017 may have received the message that it is possible for her to become a leader of the government, she will also have learnt that how her legs look in a pencil skirt still matters. (主流媒体可以协助这一努力。毕竟,虽然一个在2017年长大的女孩可能已经接受了她有可能成为政府领导人的信息,但她也会明白,她穿铅笔裙的腿看起来如何仍然很重要。)”可知,主流媒体对女孩关于性别角色的信仰有着深远的影响。故选D。

Julie glanced across at her cousin, Mira. She was showing off a bright pink prom (舞会) dress to Aunt Clara, who examined the dress with a smile. “Aunt Clara Will you look at the dress I’d like to get ” Julie asked. “Unfortunately, I can’t afford to buy two expensive dresses, Julie,” Aunt Clara turned. Julie hung her dream dress back and followed her aunt and cousin to the cashier.
Back home, Julie ran downstairs to the basement (地下室). She didn’t have a room of her own, but rather a corner of the basement. She opened her cookie box and smiled sadly as she looked at a photo of her dad and mom, then removed the stack (堆) of birthday and Christmas cards from her grandma. Her grandma didn’t have much, but she’d send Mira and Julie a card and some cash every year. Once she’d gathered the notes, she counted just over a thousand dollars! “More than enough for my dream dress!” Julie whispered.
Julie ran upstairs. Mira was parading her dress in the sitting room while Aunt Clara looked on proudly. Julie watched them for a moment, and her heart ached. If only her mom were still alive, Julie turned away from the happy scene and walked out the front door. Once she had her dream dress, she could join the prom. A few hours later, Julie returned home with her shopping.
Julie sat up in shock when she woke the following morning. Her new dress was gone! She was about to head upstairs to search for it when she spotted something moving in the yard that caught her attention. As she ran out, she found Jewel was tearing up the dress. Julie shouted in frustration and anger. It didn’t matter if she got the dress back from the dog now because it was already ruined (毁坏). Her dream dress was gone, and she couldn’t afford to replace it.
Julie grabbed her dress and jumped on a bus. At the third stop, she jumped off and ran down the block.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Julie knocked on a familiar door and waited. When the door opened and she saw her grandma’s welcoming smile, she couldn’t contain her pain anymore. She held up her torn dress and burst into tears. Her grandma joined Julie on the sofa and put an arm around her shoulders. She took Julie into the tiny dining room. There was an old sewing machine. Grandma and Julie spent the next few hours discussing different dress designs Julie found on her phone. The dress she and Grandma could make wouldn’t be like her dream dress. Instead, it would be even better.
On the day of the prom, Julie wore a new dress made by her grandma. It cost Grandma a few nights’ sleep. The security guard at the entrance smiled at Julie as he opened the door for her. She nodded to him and entered the room. A few nearby students stopped to look at Julie in shock. Her classmates parted as she made her way toward the stage. Everyone was looking at Julie. Someone started clapping their hands. She’d thought her original dress would turn heads, but the one she and Grandma made was a showstopper. Her whole class was cheering for her.

A lot of people are scared of spiders (蜘蛛) and consider their webs to be dirt. But growing up in Argentina and Italy, I remember seeing webs in the corners of my house and thinking they were gorgeous.
A. They can float around the world freely now.

Specifically, digitally editing pictures to improve personal appearance before posting them on Instagram increased weight and shape concerns in college students.
9. Which statement will Pamela probably agree with
A Instagram users prefer edited photos.

As she ran out she found Jewel was tearing up the dress.
