Weald & Downland Living Museum
Fun fact
Over 50 historic buildings from across the Weald and Downland area have been dismantled (拆除) and then reconstructed across a lovely 40-acre site in the South Downs national park. The collection of buildings represents almost a thousand years of rural life in south-east England: furnished just as they would have been in the past — complete with the homes, farms and public buildings. There’s a sense of exploring a real village as you wander between them along green paths, stopping to climb the stairs of a 17th-century craftsman’s (工匠) cottage to lie on the straw bed or sheltering from a shower in a smoky, 14th-century hall.
Getting there
The Stagecoach 60 bus service from Chichester to Midhurst stops just five minutes away at Grooms Yard, Singleton. The nearest railway stations are Chichester (2 miles) and Haslemere (7 miles). The museum is on Town Lane in Singleton, reached via the A286 from Chichester to Midhurst. Parking is free and there are disabled parking spaces opposite the museum shop.
Value for money
Yes. It’s not cheap but it’s a special experience that easily fills a day. Plus it’s a valuable cause worth supporting. Adults £14, children 5-17 and students £6.50, under-4s free, family £38 (two adults and two children) or £25 (one adult and three children).
Opening hours
Daily 10am-5pm (last entry 4pm).
21. What can visitors do in Weald & Downland Living Museum
A. Take a shower in the hall.
B. Stay overnight at a cottage.
C. Learn construction techniques.
D. Explore rural life centuries ago.
22. How much would a couple with their 5-year-old twin sons pay for admission
A. £25. B. £34.5. C. £38. D. £41.
23 What do we know about Weald & Downland Living Museum
A. It charges parking fees.
B. It has varied opening hours.
C. It is inconveniently located for bus riders.
D. It offers the disabled thoughtful service.
B
Expressions of honour and respect have been shared for Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, who passed away on May 1, 2023 at the age of 84.
Lightfoot was born on November 17, 1938, in Orillia, Ontario. He made his performing debut (初次登台) at age five singing in a choir (唱诗班). He claimed that it was the choirmaster who taught him how to enjoy and sing great music. He took piano and voice lessons and began winning amateur singing competitions. Just before he turned 13, Lightfoot performed on stage at Massey Hall in Toronto as one of the winners of the Kiwanis Music Festival.
As a teenager, Lightfoot continued to study the piano and taught himself how to play drums. He soon became a paid musician, travelling throughout Canada and playing with different bands. Lightfoot played numerous styles of music and began writing songs about Canadian nature and history.
While he still enjoyed performing, by 1964 Lightfoot began gaining recognition as a songwriter, and other musicians started recording his songs. One of the most famous musicians to play his music was Elvis Presley.
He continued to write, perform and record his songs as he grew older. In 1975, Lightfoot wrote and recorded one of his most famous songs, about a real shipping disaster occuring in the Great Lakes, called “The Wreck of the Edmund Fizgerald”. This song is still played and is one of the most famous Canadian songs ever recorded.
Lightfoot won many awards for his 20 original albums(专辑). He was awarded 16 Juno Awards, Canada’s top prize for music. In’ 1986 Lightfoot was given a spot in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. He also received a
Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in 1997. In Ontario, he was awarded the highest provincial prize, becoming a member of the Order of Ontario.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described him as one of the greatest singer-songwriters. “Gordon Lightfoot captured our country’s spirit in his music, and in doing so, he helped shape Canada’s soundscape,” he said on Twitter. “May his music continue to inspire future generations, and may his spirit live on forever.”
24. What does Lightfoot think of the choirmaster
A. Far-sighted. B. Inspiring. C. Well-read. D. Strict.

B. His songs became known throughout Canada.
C. His talent turned into a career.
D. His dream of travelling around the world came true.
26. What encouraged Lightfoot to write one of his famous songs in 1975
A. A real-life accident. B. The Juno Awards.
C. The wonder of the Great Lakes. D. A songwriting contest.

Imagine coming home after a long day at work and being welcomed by a loving pet who greets you warmly. Better yet, imagine a pet that never has to be fed and never has to use the bathroom.
Robopest provide many of the perks of a real pet without all of the responsibility. These furry (毛的) robofriends are more advanced and lifelike than remote-controlled toy dogs. Many feature realistic fur for an enjoyable petting experience and make sounds and small, natural movements.
Paro is one of the most popular companion robots. It is a robotic baby harp seal (鞍背海豹) with cute black eyes and a pacifier (安抚奶嘴) that doubles as its charger. Created by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Paro is more than a stuffed animal. The little seal is packed with five kinds of sensors: touch, light, audio, temperature and posture. Plus, Paro is super intelligent; it can learn to behave in a way that the user prefers. According to the Paro website, “If you stroke (抚摸) it every time you touch it, Paro will remember your previous action and try to repeat that action to be stroked.”
While animal-assisted therapy (疗法) and the benefits of pets have been analysed in numerous scientific studies, real animals may not always be the appropriate choice for an older adult. Animals can be a lot of work; they can spread some diseases to humans and they may not always be on their best behaviour. That is where robotic pets come into play. In a study on Paro’s effect on hospital/nursing home residents, researchers found that those who interacted with Paro were less lonely over the period of the trial.
Robot pets are becoming a common fixture in assisted living communities and, as years go by, these robopets will become more advanced at copying real animal behaviours. While some believe that robot pets can’t compete with real animals, the companionship they provide to older adults cannot be denied.
28. What does the underlined word “perks” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Solutions. B. Challenges. C. Chances. D. Advantages.
29. How smart is Paro
A. It can work without electricity. B. It can touch its user.
C. It can repeat its user’s words. D. It can adapt its actions to its user.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly intended to explain
A. What researchers have found about diseases.
B. Why robotic pets are suitable for people.
C. What dangers animals can bring to humans.
D. Why hospitals apply animal-assisted therapy.
31. What is the author’s attitude to the future of robot pets
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear.
D
To figure out if we can die of boredom, we first have to understand what boredom is. For help, I called James Danckert, a psychologist who studies boredom at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “A lot of people think about being bored as being lazy. And it’s absolutely not that,” he says. “Bored people want to be engaged with their world, eager to do something satisfying and exciting. But any attempt to do so is failing.”
That means boredom is usually very upsetting. And it can have physical consequences. In one of his experiments, Danckert made people extremely bored by showing them a video of two people hanging clothes to dry. He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster and their levels of a hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad. These physical changes were signs that boredom was stressing them out. “It’s not like having a full-on panic attack,”Danckert says. But it’s certainly enough to make boredom unpleasant.
Let’s come back to if boredom can kill you. Back in the 1980s, scientists asked people who worked for the British government a whole bunch of questions, including how bored they felt in their daily lives. The study tracked the participants over time. When any one of them died, the survey recorded the cause of death. In 2010, two researchers matched up these causes of death with the participants’ level of boredom. It turned out that people who said they were more bored were also more likely to have died of heart disease. “We know that prolonged exposure to stress is bad for your health,” Danckert says. A single boring day can’t kill you. But if you’re always bored, the stress could add up into something dangerous.
“Oh no,” you might be thinking. “School is boring, my friends are boring, everything is boring! What’s going to happen to me ” Don’t worry, Danckert says, “As you get older, you get less bored,” mainly because you gain more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals. And trust me: that’s anything but boring.
32. According to James Danckert, people feel bored because ______.
A. they are too lazy to do anything B. they can’t fully understand boredom
C. they are too frightened to have a try D. they can’t gain excitement in life
33. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Doing housework will make people bored.
B. Physical changes can lead to extreme boredom.
C. People’s heart rate increases with boredom.
D. Watching something sad is a boring experience.
34. What does the underlined word “prolonged” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Continued. B. Short. C. Sudden. D. Active.
35. What does Danckert recommend to save people from boredom
A. Depending on friends. B. Setting long-term goals.
C. Keeping yourself occupied. D. Trusting people around you.

Four Tips to Improve Your English Vocabulary
Learning vocabulary is a big part of learning a language. The more English words you learn, the better you can communicate your needs, ideas, thoughts and feelings to others in English. ____36____ Here are four tips for better vocabulary learning.
●Write down new words.
It’s a really good idea to write down useful new vocabulary. ___37___ Plus, lots of people learn better when they see things written on paper, rather than just hearing them.
●Revise new vocabulary regularly.
So, you’ve got an English notebook full of useful vocabulary to remember. But did you know that if you don’t look again at the new words and phrases, you only remember on average 20-25 percent of them ____38____
So make five minutes each day to revise your English vocabulary. The more you look backwards, the faster you go forwards!
●Learn from context.
“Context” means the text that comes before and after a particular word. ___39___ It helps you guess the meaning of words you don’t know, it shows you how a word is used in a sentence, and it helps you remember the word for longer.
This means learning vocabulary by reading and listening is more effective than trying to study word lists. It also means that it’s better to make a note of how a word is used in a sentence rather than just the word on its own.
●____40____
Researchers have found that you need to see or hear a word on average ten times to remember it. But you learn it much faster when you’re actively using a word.
So, besides getting as much exposure to English as you can, take every opportunity to communicate in English with other people.
A. Use it or lose it!
B. See or hear a word more times.
C. New words are usually hard to remember.
D. That’s a shocking waste of time and effort!
E. It also refers to the situation in which a word is used.
F. The act of writing the words helps you remember them better.
G. So what can you do to build your English vocabulary quickly and effectively

A Gift Beyond Measure
At an early age, I was crazy about music, dreaming of possessing a piano on which I could practice and play in the way a famous pianist did on the stage. Later when I was getting older, on my way to school, there was an instrument shop that I passed by almost every day. When I saw through the window, in the corner of the shop stood a nice piano which would always attract my eyes so deeply that I even forgot everything around me.
To my sadness, my family was truly struggling. In that period, my mother was laid off from her position and my father was only a clerk in a company. It was just a matter of getting by on a low income, not to mention buying me an expensive piano though they knew I was eager to play that piano so much. The increasing wrinkles in my father’s face even stopped me from having this thought.
Then one day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, the piano had gone! It was a big surprise. Someone had purchased the piano that I would stare at almost every day! I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. However, at the thought of not being able to see that piano any more, tears filled my eyes.
Disappointed and helpless, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. I felt as though something had been stolen in my heart. After what seemed a year, I returned home, dragging my heavy legs. Hardly had I just gone into the house when my mother called my name. Brushing away my tears, I followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.

【原文】W: Hi, there, everybody, I’m Jane Smith and welcome to Animal World. Before you start your visit, I’d like to tell you about a few special events happening here today. The first event is called The World of Ants, and it’s happening this morning quite soon in the Insect House. Dr. David Crocker is giving a lecture all about ants — the different types of ants, how they organize themselves, what they eat, their behavior and so on. It’s from 11 o’clock to 12 o’clock. At midday, that’s 12 o’clock, there’s a film which is just as fascinating, called The Great Migration. This is all about birds and how they move across continents and oceans. As I said, it’s a film which all the family will enjoy, and it’s on in Theater C, which you can see here just behind me, just a little farther down the hall past Theater A and Theater B — so bear that in mind for 12 o’clock. It will last 45 minutes. The next event is called Encouraging Garden Wildlife and will take place in the Exhibition Room with Monica Chaddha. Monica will be showing you ways of encouraging animals, birds and other wildlife to visit and live in your garden, how to place boxes for nests, what food to put out for them and all sorts of practical advice. That’s at 2:30, so just after lunch, and will last half an hour.

Plus, it’s a valuable cause worth supporting.

B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear.

【答案】32. D 33. C 34. A 35. C

But any attempt to do so is failing.” (“很多人认为无聊就是懒惰。事实绝对不是这样。”他说。“无聊的人想要融入他们的世界,渴望做一些令人满意和兴奋的事情。但任何这样做的尝试都是失败的。”)”可知,James Danckert认为人们感到无聊是因为在生活中没有令人兴奋的事。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster and their levels of a hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad.(他发现与看另一个让他们难过的视频相比,人们感到无聊的时候,他们的心跳更快,并且一种叫做皮质醇的激素水平上升)”可知,人们的心率会随着无聊感增加。故选C。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词下文“A single boring day can’t kill you. But if you’re always bored, the stress could add up into something dangerous. (无聊的一天不会害死你。但如果你总是感到无聊,压力可能会累积成危险的事情)”以及“exposure to stress is bad for your health (暴露在压力之下对你的健康有害)”可知,持续接触压力会让人处于危险中,故划线词意思是“持续的”。故选A。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Don’t worry, Danckert says, “As you get older, you get less bored,” mainly because you gain more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals. And trust me: that’s anything but boring. (别担心,Danckert说,“随着年龄的增长,你会变得不那么无聊,”主要是因为你获得了更多的独立性,不得不忙起来实现你的长期目标。相信我,这一点都不无聊)”可知,Danckert建议人们要忙起来去摆脱无聊。故选C。

【答案】参考范文:
I couldn’t imagine what was happening in front of me. Standing there in the room was the very piano I had been longing for day and night. With excitement and surprise in my heart, I couldn’t stop tears streaming down my face. My mother came over to me, saying they knew the piano was what I had dreamed about and my father had tried everything possible to make my dream come true. I was about to say something when there was a sound of footsteps.
Then the door opened and my father appeared, with a big smile on his wrinkled face. I gave him a big hug. “It’s so nice of you, Dad!” I said. I could not imagine how much effort he had made and how hard he was working every day. Maybe only the wrinkles on his face could tell me everything. My father kissed me on the forehead, whispering that he had earned enough to buy the piano at last. Only then did I realize that no gift could measure up to a father’s love.
