Cannes(戛纳) is a place that offers lots of different ways to spoil yourself. During the Cannes Film Festival in May, nothing changes, except that there are more people doing this, and that they talk about film. Here’s a guide to what you should do during the festival, both film-related and not.
Hotei Intercontinental Carlton
The film festival is a busy time for Cannes. The best way to appreciate the crowds might be having a dinner on a terrace(露天平台). Head to the Hotel Intercontinental Carlton and wander the lobby to take it all in. If you’re lucky you might be able to secure a table in the restaurant. Dress to impress or you won't stand a chance of getting in.
Cinema de la Plage
Throughout the Cannes Film Festival, one of the best places to soak up some of the wonderful atmosphere is the open-air Cinema del a Plage at Mace beach. If you haven’t secured a ticket in advance for a seat, there’s no need to worry. You can spread a blanket out on the ground, open up your pre-prepared picnic, and enjoy the movie.
Marché Forville
The Marché Forville is a must-see for any visitor to Cannes and a foodie’s delight. On most days, vendors sell home-made fruits and vegetables as well as local specialties to eat for lunch. But don’t go on Mondays, unless you want to browse for bargains, as that’s when the flea market is on instead.
La Croisette
La Croisette is the most famous walk in Cannes and is listed under the cultural inventory of France itself. Stroll the whole length, stop for a coffee, and end your walk by sitting on one of the free blue chairs along the way while taking in the view. It is also a great place to admire Cannes’ sculptures.
21. What is probably the intention of the teat
A. To introduce French culture. B. To present dining locations.
C. To publicize a film festival. D. To suggest tourism activities.
22. Which place best suits people who enjoy shopping

Parents often think that their kids should be good at studies and do well in sports. That’s usually the case because parents feel that could get their children admission to top colleges. However, Melissa and Mark Wimmer think differently.
Their 14-year-olds on, Mike, is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world’s top IQ chub. He completed his high school, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees all in three years. That’s not all. He also ran two tech companies, founded a third one that works towards controlling the population of lionfish, an invasive (入侵的) species.
But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills. Melissa told CNBC that people expected “Young Sheldon” before they met her son. Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills. “But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he’s just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things,” said Melissa.
Mark and Melissa got to know about their child’s intelligence when he entered preschool. A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different course to support his fast-track development. Many parents aren’t comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds, but Mike’s parents saw the value in letting their child go through it. “I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children,” said Melissa.
The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use. “We let him order food when he’s 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment,” said Melissa.
Thanks to his parents, Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.
24. What do the underlined words “a prodigy” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. A gifted person. B. A famous student.
C. A brilliant biologist. D. A successful businessman.
25. What can we infer about the child in the show Young Sheldon
A. He likes to make friends. B. He is a well-rounded man.
C. He is a popular child actor. D. He is poor at dealing with people.
26. How did Mark and Melissa discover Mike’s high intelligence
A. Through a recommendation from a child psychologist.
B. Through observing Mike's behavior in preschool.
C. Through participating in a special educational program.
D. Through the information provided by Mike's schoolteachers.
27. What do Mike's parents do to improve his social skills
A. Teach him some communication rules. B. Encourage him to speak in class.
C. Place him in social situations. D. Let him go to school alone.
C
In nature, octopuses (章鱼) hunt mainly with their sense of touch, using their eight arms to feel out their environment for hidden creatures. Researchers at the University of Minnesota recently studied a different way octopuses hunt—when they identify prey (猎物) based on sight. The study findings show that the marine creatures are quite consistent and methodical in how they approach prey.
Lead researcher Trevor Ward ill and his team placed California two-spot octopuses into water tanks, hiding them in caves where they would have one eye looking out. They then placed either fiddler crabs or white shrimp in the tanks to see how the octopuses would try to catch them, capturing the interactions on video. The crabs and shrimp behave differently when trying to escape from predators(捕猎者), so using both species gave the researchers an opportunity to see whether this led the octopuses to use a different arm for hunting depending on the prey.
Wardill’s team found that the octopuses almost always used the same arm to grab their prey. Specifically, the second arm from the middle of the octopuses’ body, on the same side of their body as the eye, caught the prey. If they needed more arms to grab prey, they would use the ones next to the second arm.
The octopuses also attacked differently depending on the prey. When faced with crabs, an octopus would move suddenly on top of the crab with its whole body. However, when catching shrimp, the octopuses would take one arm and reach out very slowly toward the shrimp, then grab it and latch(缠住) on to it with its other arms to pull it in.
Ward ill and his team hope to do more research. They want to study the octopus’s brain as it attacks prey to develop a better understanding of what role the creature’s nervous system plays in selecting the arms it uses.
28. What is the recent study mainly about
A. Octopuses’ ability to hide itself. B. Octopuses’ way to track prey.
C. Octopuses’ hunting mode via eyes. D. Octopuses’ method of perceiving the environment.
29. What can we learn about the octopuses in the study
A. They adopt different strategies to hunt. B. They stretch arms slowly to catch crabs.
C. They move suddenly to prey on shrimps. D. They use the second arm to catch prey anytime.
30. What does the follow-up test aim to find out about the octopuses
A. Whether they’re nervous in hunting. B. How their nerves work during hunting.
C. How they choose their arms in hunting. D. Whether they use their brain during hunting.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Octopuses: Skillful Hunters B. Octopuses: One-armed Predators
C. Octopuses: A Sharp-eyed Species D. Octopuses: A Mysterious Creature
D
Despite all the efforts students make to graduate with a science major, research has shown that most college science courses provide students with only a fragmented (碎片化的) understanding of fundamental scientific concepts. The teaching method improves memorization of separate facts, proceeding from one textbook chapter to the next without necessarily making connections between them, instead of learning how to use the information and connect those facts meaningfully.
With that in mind, we developed a series of cross-disciplinary (跨学科的) activities. In our most recent study, we investigated how well college students could use their chemistry knowledge to explain real-world biological phenomena. To begin with, we interviewed 28 first year college students majoring in sciences or engineering. All had taken both introductory chemistry and biology courses. We asked them to identify connections between the content of these courses and what they believed to be the take-home messages from each course. The students responded with extensive lists of topics, concepts, and skills that they’d learned in class. Following that, a set of cross-disciplinary activities were designed to guide students in the use of core chemistry ideas and knowledge to help explain real-world biological phenomena. One activity explored the impacts of ocean acidification on seashells. Here, the students were asked to use basic chemistry ideas to explain how the increasing level of carbon dioxide in seawater is affecting shell-building marine animals such as corals, clams and oysters.
Overall, the students felt confident of their chemistry knowledge. However, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knowledge to explaining the biological phenomena. These findings highlight that a big gap remains between what students learn in their science courses and how well prepared they are to apply that information.
The students in our study also reported that these activities helped them see links between the two disciplines that they wouldn’t have perceived otherwise. The ability to make these connections is important beyond the classroom as well, because it’s the basis of science literacy(科学素养). So we also came away with evidence that our chemistry students at least would like to have the ability to have a deeper tinder standing of science and how to apply it.
32. What does the existing science education fail to do according to the research
A. Extend students’ theoretical knowledge.
B. Engage students in more outdoor activities.
C. Encourage students to enjoy the learning process.
D. Teach students to make connections among different subjects.
33. What can we learn about the student interviewees
A. They have rich academic knowledge.
B. They pay little attention to biology courses.
C. They hardly identify the core ideas of science.
D. They fully understand their major’s importance.
34. What does the activity about ocean acidification expects students to do
A. Analyse the exact composition of seawater.
B. Study some unusual phenomena under the sea.
C. Come up with practical methods to protect sea life.
D. Explain the effects of carbon dioxide on sea creatures.
35. What does the author see from the result of the study
A. The need to remove the unfairness in education.
B. The difficulties of cross-disciplinary study.
C. The potential to promote students’ science literacy.
D. The method of increasing students’ practical skills.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We are masters of distraction especially when we feel an uncomfortable emotion surfacing. And our society makes it easier than ever. 36 Those range from videos on TikTok to online shopping.
But does distraction really help deal with emotions Or does it merely worsen the problem 37 In some ways it can help, and oftentimes distraction avoids the root of the problem.
In the loud world in which we live nowadays, avoiding an emotion is easier than processing it. During the sequencing of an emotion, distraction occurs when we first notice it. The emotion in question causes physiological changes and often causes action. 38 It isn’t always a bad thing. There’s pretty good evidence that distraction can help downregulate the anxiety around a negative emotion.
39 There are longer mood states that last days or months, although most emotions only last a few minutes before they pass. That’s why, if you're seeking long-term solutions, learning to process emotions is the only way. When you slowdown and make space for your emotions, you can start to process them.
Jacobs Hendel, a psychotherapist, uses a process, which involves connecting your feet to the floor, deep belly breathing, slowing down and then identifying where different emotions are felt in the body. 40 -once anxiety goes down, you can identify the other emotions that are coming up in your body. If the same emotions keep coming up and causing you stress, learning to sit with them and work through them. Facing your emotions may help you see that they aren’t as scary as you thought.
A. According to experts, the answer is a mixed bag.
B. Grabbing your phone isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
C. And feeling them in the body is a good place to start.
D. We feel like emotions are going to get bigger when we focus on them.
E. For example, if you're sad, you drawback; if you’re angry, you approach.
F. But distraction isn’t a true fix either, because it only works in the short-term.
G. Once a negative emotion sets in, we may reach for various digital di tractions.

There are countless reasons to stay up late in college. Here’s one good reason to go to bed.
The less a student sleeps every night, the lower their grade-point average will be, according to a two-year study of the sleep habits of more than 600 college freshmen.
Researchers found that every lost hour of average nightly sleep at the start of an academic term was associated with a 0.07-point 41 in a student’s end-of-term GPA. When a student slept less than six hours a night, the 42 of lost sleep on a student’s grades was even more 43 said David Creswell, the lead author of the study.
“You’re 44 this sleep debt,” Creswell said. “And that has a pretty negative role 45 people’s academics.”
Sleep, especially undisturbed sleep, helps the brain 46 and retain information it has learned. And when someone is sleep-deprived, attention span and memory are also impaired(受损的).
But students face a variety of “ 47 pressure” that keep them up late in college, which is often the first time students are living away from home, Creswell said. The average student in the sample group typically fell asleep at about 2:30 a.m. 48 any of the students went to bed before midnight. And, on average, they slept 6.5 hours a night.
It’s not clear why less sleep would cause someone to have a lower GPA, Creswell said. Sleeping for longer, 49 periods of time allows for REM sleep, a period of unconscious rapid eye movement that corresponds with high activity in the brain. Creswell said he 50 that a regular pattern of 51 sleep creates a “sleep debt” overtime, leaving students unable to concentrate. “These college students are going to class with a ton of sleep debt, and they’re having trouble staying focused and 52 in college classrooms,” Creswell said. “Those thing can
really harm your ability to really 53 with the material.”
Obviously, the findings could inform systemic changes at university campaigns or workshops to help students have a better night’s sleep. There are multiple pathways to get to a GPA, and sleep is like the 54 that holds students’ lives together in lots of domains.
“Fundamentally, it 55 If we’re not sleeping well, all systems are not a go,” Creswell said. “Our body is not prepared for the day ahead of us and what we're asking it to do if we don’t have that good, basic chunk of night-time sleep.”

W: Hi Phil. Did all that noise in the street wake you up last night
M: No, it didn’t. I’m a deep sleeper. What happened, Jess
W: Well, I didn’t see it myself but I heard that it was an argument between two car drivers and supposedly it got quite heated.
M: Really Who told you about it
W: Tara at number 42. It seems that both drivers got out of their cars and started shouting at each other. She says they almost started fighting.
M: Hmm... well I’d think whether what Tara said was completely true if I were you.
W: No, I believe her actually―people do get very annoyed by not being able to pass each other on this street.
M: Did the cars make contact
W: No... they were just coming in opposite directions and they met where the street gets narrow and neither one would move backwards to let the other pass. So they just stayed there, in them idle of the road, with neither one giving way.
M: How childish.

W: My guest today is the novel it Greg Field! Greg, were you into books and reading as a kid
M: Well, my parents were always on at me to read. They couldn’t understand why I didn’t like it much. One summer, though, I was in my grandma’s sitting room and she had this whole pile of books, which she let me play with because I liked the covers. And I started leafing through, and then maybe reading a word or two, and then a page, and then that was it.
W: And what about at school
M: Well, there was one particular teacher who at the end of everyday would read books to us. It was like music, like a film―these great pictures his voices tired up in my mind and that’s when I knew I had to be a writer, so I could make that happen too.
W: So how did it feel when you eventually achieved that
M: Well, I was so scared when I was writing my first novel — scared that nobody would read it, or that I’d never finish it. I can’t tell you what a relief it was to see it on the shelves in a bookshop. Then the next one was, by comparison, a bit of a disappointment and it never sold as well.

M: Hello, everyone. I hope you're enjoying your first day. The university asked me to come back and talk to you as one of you, giving you a student’s side of the story.
So with that in mind, I’d just like to say one thing really, which is: get involved in something other than your course as soon as you can. I remember when I first came here to study history, I had no idea of what job I’d end up doing. But in my first year, I joined the university broadcasting society. I was interested in reporting. Then in my second year, I got a holiday job, helping out as a researcher at the local radio station, and really it all led on from there, because first of all I was clear about what I wanted to do — which was to work in broadcasting — and secondly, I had some contacts, which in this line of work is a key thing.
So that’s really my message to you today. Don’t delay, join some clubs and societies and start developing your interests. Thanks for your time.
