Donna Strickland was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Arthur Ashkin and Gérard Mourou. It’s the first time in 55 years that a woman has won this famous prize, but why has it taken so long We look at five other pioneering female physicists — past and present — who actually deserve the prize.
Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Perhaps the most famous snub (冷落): the student Bell discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967, when she was a PhD student at Cambridge. The Nobel Prize that recognised this landmark discovery in 1974, however, went to her male supervisor, Antony Hewish.Recently awarded a 2.3 million Breakthrough Prize, which she gave away to help under-represented students, she joked to The Guardian, “I feel I’ve done very well out of not getting a Nobel Prize.”
Lene Hau
Hau is best-known for leading the research team at Harvard University in 1999 that managed to slow a beam of light, before managing to stop it completely in 2001.Often topping Nobel Prize prediction lists, could 2019 be Hau’s year.
Vera Rubin
Rubin discovered dark matter in the 1980s, opening up a new field of astronomy. She died in 2016, without recognition from the committee.
Chien-Shiung Wu
Wu’s “Wu experiment” helped disprove the “law of conservation of parity”.Her experimental work was helpful but never honoured, and instead, her male colleagues won the 1957 Nobel Prize for their theoretical work behind the study.
Lise Meitner
Meitner led groundbreaking work on the discovery of nuclear fission. However, the discovery was acknowledged by the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which was won by her male co-lead, Otto Hahn.

C. Lene Hau. D. Vera Rubin.
23. What do we know about the five females
A. The five female scientists did greatly in chemistry.
B. Vera Rubin had opened up a new field in geometry.
C. Lise Meitner’s teacher won a Nobel Prize for her work.
D. The five female scientists haven’t been awarded Nobel Prize.
B
Since I was born and brought up in a rural town, I have a great interest in nature. Using the chance of studying abroad in my second year at college, I decided to go to Canada just because I wanted to see the beautiful phenomena there. So after I finished the study, I went to Yellowknife in the Northwest. I clearly remember the sixth night in Yellowknife. Suddenly my host mother came to my room around 8 p. m. and told me to change clothes and go outside quickly carrying her camera.
The northern lights were flickering (闪烁)in the sky! I was amazed and just stood there with my mouth open. I forgot to take pictures of the mysterious lights.
Since that night, whenever it was sunny, I went outside at night and looked at the sky. It was so cold that my hands and feet were numb with cold. Actually, the time of my being able to be out was limited. I had to bring her camera back to the house in one hour at the most, for the camera was going to be broken because of the cold temperature.
As I took pictures of the northern lights, I came to find a characteristic movement of the lights. They first appear in the north part of the sky and then they gradually come down to the south. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for a while, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. Since it is only a few seconds for the northern lights to come down to the middle of the sky, it is very hard to get good pictures.
The stronger the sun acts, the better and stronger northern lights flicker in the sky. That’s because they occur from the collision(碰撞)between atmospheric gases and solar wind. Much more solar wind comes to the earth when the sun is active, leading to the best northern lights.
24. Why did the author forget to take pictures
A. It was freezing cold outside.
B. He was shocked by the wonderful sights.
C. The lights were flickering in the sky.
D. He lost all his feeling in his hands and feet.
25. What can we infer from the passage
A. The northern lights came out every night.
B. The author took lots of pictures with his camera.
C. The author could stay as long as he liked outdoors.
D. Cameras will be damaged if exposed too long to coldness.
26. When is the best time to see the northern lights
A. They appear in the north part of the sky.
B. They rise in the east and set in the west.
C. They are between the north and south.
D. They come down to the south part of the sky.
27. Why is it hard for the author to take good pictures
A. The lights stay in the middle for a very short time.
B. The lights of the sun affect the northern lights.
C. The lights are caused by the collisions of gases.
D. The colours of the lights are determined by the height.
C
New emojis (表情符号) appear every year. The updates come from a California-based nonprofit called Unicode Consortium. Each year, the emoji committee releases new emojis that will update the existing keyboard.
Jennifer Duniel, chair of the committee, says that it’s not the organization coming up with these new characters. It’s the public.
The first emoji keyboard was created in Japan in the 1990s by mobile phone company designer Shigetaka Kurita. Kurita created emojis because the company offered email communications that were limited to 250 characters and an emoji is only one character each but can be used to say more. Emoji have become popular around the world— 92 percent of the online population uses them.
“They aren’t tied to any language. They aren’t tied to any region of the world.” she says.
Anyone is allowed to submit (提交) new emojis, and if they make a strong enough case, Unicode will accept them. “We do get suggestions in lots of different languages from around the world,” says Daniel.
An emoji idea has to meet certain criteria (标准). These criteria include its clear differences, whether it can be used with existing emojis and whether it can have multiple meanings. The popular face with “tears of joy” emoji, for example, is easy to identify, which makes it distinct. You can pair it with many other emojis to convey how you are feeling. Additionally, this emoji has adopted many meanings.
Kids today are very familiar with emojis and how to use them. And the keyboard has got more than 3,600 emoji characters. “They became more and more comfortable and confident using emojis, which means they’re more willing to take risks,” Daniel says of younger generations who grow up with the keyboard.
28. Which best describes emojis
A. They vary from place to place.
B. They are more expressive than words.
C. They make daily talk more difficult.
D. They are limited in computers.
29. What can be learnt about Unicode Consortium
A. It gives emojis new meanings.
B. It invents new enojis every year.
C. It created the first emoji keyboard.
D It judges the submission of new emojis.
30. Why is the popular face with “tears of joy” emoji mentioned
A. To show its popularity among young people.
B. To make the emoji accepted by more people.
C. To make the criteria understood more easily.
D. To prove its difference from others.
31. What’s the younger generation’s attitude towards using emojis
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Cautious D. Critical
D
A handful of stencils (模板) and three pens sound like materials for a child’s art project. But researchers have now used these tools to draw functional health monitors directly on human skin.
Wearable sensor technology, which helps doctors Check a variety of health indicators (指标), has in recent years advanced from heavy equipment to flexible patches (贴片). These sensors can be expensive, however. They also tend to follow skin imperfectly, making them sensitive to the wearer’s move. Researchers say that a new drawn-on-skin electronics system could offer a solution to both problems.
A team led by biomedical engineer Faheem Ershad of the University of Houston first developed a conductive (导电的) ink that is safe to use on human skin. The researchers loaded the ink into ballpoint pens, then placed a stencil made of tape on a volunteer and followed within it to draw the simple circuit diagram (电路图). Within five minutes the ink dried to create a working sensor. The researchers then taped on an electrical line to provide power and send data to a computer.
Using just this type of ink, the team measured the electrical activity of heart and muscles. Because the sensor stuck perfectly to the skin, wearers could walk around without jarring it, which reduced data quality. The ink didn’t take in sweat and was easily removed with a wet paper towel and soap.
For more advanced equipment, Ershad’s team used two additional inks: one served as a semi-conductor (半导体), and the other acted as an object to prevent electricity. Zheng Yan, a biomedical engineer at the University of Missouri, and his colleagues have developed similar technology using pencils and paper, but their method is limited to passive conductors that cannot introduce energy into a circuit. Ershad says that he hopes to create high-tech sensors to discover health indicators ranging from elements in sweat to the brain’s electrical activity.
The researchers plan to eventually make their sensors truly wireless by combining more advanced ink-based circuits. After that achievement, they say, people could use affordable sets of stencils and pens to carefully watch their own health at home.
32. How does the new wearable sensor technology work
A By placing a stencil to send health data.
B. By applying a conductive ink to human skin.
C. By loading a safe ink to a working sensor.
D. By drawing simple circuit diagram with pens.
33. What does the underlined word “jarring” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Shaking. B. Accessing. C. Curing. D. Hiding.
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Hospitals will increase the cost of testing health indicators.
B. Researchers aim to make advanced wireless ink-based sensors.
C. A safe sensor will be applied to make human skin less sensitive.
D. Yan’s team has developed a technology to lead energy into a circuit.
35. What is the text mainly talking about
A. A child’s art project helping check health indicators.
B. A conductive ink sensor sending data to a computer.
C. An electronics system checking brain’s electrical activity.
D. A pen-and-ink method producing wearable health equipment.

The class was over. Karl was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karl picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank(空白的). He couldn’t believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karl’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karl looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
Karl decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most likely be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister’s birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat. “Finders are keepers, right ”, he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!

【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A

These criteria include its clear differences whether it can be used with existing emojis and whether it can have multiple meanings.
B It invents new enojis every year.
C. It created the first emoji keyboard.
D. It judges the submission of new emojis.
C. Cautious D. Critical
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. C 31. A

32. How does the new wearable sensor technology work
A. By placing a stencil to send health data.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. D
【解析】

【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“A team led by biomedical engineer Faheem Ershad of the University of Houston first developed a conductive (导电的) ink that is safe to use on human skin.
故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The researchers plan to eventually make their sensors truly wireless by combining more advanced ink-based circuits.(研究人员计划通过结合更先进的墨水电路,最终使他们的传感器成为真正的无线。)”可推断,研究人员的目标是制造先进的无线墨水传感器。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A handful of stencils (模板) and three pens sound like materials for a child’s art project. But researchers have now used these tools to draw functional health monitors directly on human skin. (少量模板绘制图案和三只笔,这些听起来像是儿童美工的材料。但是研究人员现已利用这些工具直接在人类皮肤上绘制功能性健康监测器。)”和最后一段“After that achievement, they say, people could use affordable sets of stencils and pens to carefully watch their own health at home. (他们说,在取得这一成就之后,人们可以使用负担得起的模板和笔在家里仔细观察自己的健康状况。)”结合文章主要介绍一支科研团队研发出了一种新型的“电子穿戴设备”,它是直接画在皮肤上的,主要是用电子墨水笔在皮肤上画出专业传感器和电路来实现监测。故D选项“一种笔墨法可以生产出廉价的可穿戴健康设备”最符合文章大意。故选D。

How to Speak in Public
Many people have a fear of public speaking. They worry that they will lose their words, bore the audience or somehow make a fool of themselves. It is easy to try to avoid public speaking, but that usually doesn't work out. Everyone has to speak publicly at some point in their life. You may give a speech in a class or a meeting. Maybe you'll have to give a speech for some honor you've received. _____36_____
Relax. _____37_____ Your audience don't expect you to be perfect. They want you to succeed just as much as you do. If you're thinking you'll forget everything, remind yourself that you are prepared and knowledgeable. Imagine yourself doing well.
Be yourself. You are not Jack Canfield or Tony Robbins. Share your true personality with your audience, and they'll find you reliable. _____38_____
Know your topic. Try to speak about the subject you know well. Research the topic to make sure that you are correct. Public speaking is easier when you don't feel like a fraud(骗子).
_____39_____ Choose your message for the group you are speaking to carefully. If you' re giving a public speech, then rude jokes certainly won't be suitable.
Give value. Base your speech on 2 or 3 main points. ____40____ They'll be satisfied if they leave with something they can use, and that is what public speaking is all about.
A. Know your audience.
B. Choose some serious messages.
C. Don't force yourself to be perfect.
D. Don't focus your attention on too many points.
E. Pretend to be someone that you're not, and they'll discover it.
F. Your audience will not remember every little detail you tell them.
G. Follow these steps to satisfy your audience and overcome your fear of speaking publicly.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Karl looked at the blank name line for a moment. He knew his plan wouldn’t be so great if he won with a ticket that didn’t belong to him. So he walked up to his teacher. “Miss Evans, I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think the one who lost it will look for it. And these are mine,” he said, his six tickets into the box. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him.
“Karl, I intend to give you another ticket!” Miss Evans said. Karl was amazed and wondered why. Miss Evans smiled and signed to the class to quiet down, “Karl handed in the golden ticket he had just found. I think he is honest and deserves another one!” The class burst into loud applause. Karl happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it wasn’t. After all, making the right choice did make him feel great!
