On a hot summer afternoon along the Mandavi River, Shweta Hule wraps her sari around her ankles and bends to pick wild “weeds” from the river and drop them into a bowl. The plants will be made into fritters (炸果饼), to be served at the little restaurant attached to the B&B Hule manages in the Indian coastal town of Vengurla.
Wild edible (可食用的) plants are common in kitchens here. Hule’s weed is juicy, which is found in mangrove forests. Harvesting some of the plant is helping conserve the mangroves, a globally endangered ecosystem of salt-tolerant trees that stop coastal erosion (侵蚀) and absorb storm damage.
Hule is head of Swamini, a self-help group set up by nine women from a fishing community in Vengurla who started Mandavi Eco Tourism in 2017. Vengurla is known for its beautiful beaches and seafood, but the climate crisis has made fishing for a living unsustainable, so people are trying to find other sources of income. They came up with the idea of running mangrove safaris (观光游) for tourists in Vengurla’s Mandavi River.
The safaris offer visitors a unique hour-long tour of the mangroves. Food has also become a key attraction: local spicy coconut curries, with homegrown or wild vegetables. Tourists are encouraged to go crabbing, and their catch is cooked and served.
Hule only discovered recently that the weed was edible when she met tourists from another coastal city. She researched these leaves and learned that the salty plant is rich in vitamins. She made her own version of the fritters, with chickpea flour, and presented it at the wild vegetable festival. “It was an instant hit. This boosted the confidence to include these fritters in our restaurant menu,” says Hule.
Swamini’s lodging house also serves vegetarian meals and plates of fish and crab sourced from the river. “The satisfaction after the visitors enjoy our meal is the real currency. We had guests from London who were so happy with our food that they took down the recipe. Such people help our business grow. What more can we want ” says Hule.
4. Which of the following can best describe the example of Shweta Hule
A. Do as the Romans do.
B. Strike while the iron is hot.
C. Kill two birds with one stone.
D. Bite off more than you can chew.
5. What does Swamini offer to visitors
A. Eco-tours and accommodation.
B. Fishing guide service.
C. Vegetable growing techniques.
D. Hands-on cooking classes.
6. Why were Hule’s fritters well-received
A. They were less expensive.
B. They were traditional.
C. They had their own features.
D. They got strongly promoted.
7. How did Hule feel about tourists’ obtaining her food recipe
A. Lost. B. Proud. C. Worried. D. Curious.
C 5. A 6. C 7. B

根据第一段的“bends to pick wild “weeds” from the river and drop them into a bowl. The plants will be made into fritters (炸果饼), to be served at the little restaurant attached to the B&B Hule manages in the Indian coastal town of Vengurla.(弯腰从河里拣起野生的“杂草”,扔进一个碗里。这些植物将被制成炸果饼,供应给在胡勒在印度沿海城镇文古拉经营的民旅馆附属小餐馆)”和第二段“Wild edible (可食用的) plants are common in kitchens here. Hule’s weed is juicy, which is found in mangrove forests. Harvesting some of the plant is helping conserve the mangroves, a globally endangered ecosystem of salt-tolerant trees that stop coastal erosion (侵蚀) and absorb storm damage.(野生可食用植物在这里的厨房里很常见。Hule的杂草多汁,这种草生长在红树林中。收割一些这种植物有助于保护红树林,这是一种全球濒危的耐盐树木生态系统,可以阻止海岸侵蚀并吸收风暴破坏)”可知,这些杂草可以被制成食物,而且除掉它们有助于保护红树林,由此推知,Shweta Hule的例子可以说是一举两得。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“Hule is head of Swamini, a self-help group set up by nine women from a fishing community in Vengurla who started Mandavi Eco Tourism in 2017.(Hule是Swamini的负责人,这是一个自助组织,由文古拉一个渔业社区的九名妇女成立,她们于2017年创办了Mandavi生态旅游)”和第四段“The safaris offer visitors a unique hour-long tour of the mangroves. Food has also become a key attraction: local spicy coconut curries, with homegrown or wild vegetables. Tourists are encouraged to go crabbing, and their catch is cooked and served.(野生动物园为游客提供了一个独特的长达一小时的红树林之旅。食物也成为了一个关键的吸引力:当地的辛辣椰子咖喱,配以本土或野生蔬菜。游客们被鼓励去捕螃蟹,他们捕获的东西被煮熟后端上桌)”以及最后一段第一句“Swamini’s lodging house also serves vegetarian meals and plates of fish and crab sourced from the river.(斯瓦米尼的旅馆还供应素食,以及从河里捕来的鱼和螃蟹)”可知, Swamini给游客提供生态旅游和食宿。故选A。
根据倒数第二段的“Hule only discovered recently that the weed was edible when she met tourists from another coastal city. She researched these leaves and learned that the salty plant is rich in vitamins. She made her own version of the fritters, with chickpea flour, and presented it at the wild vegetable festival.(Hule最近才发现这种杂草是可以食用的,当时她遇到了来自另一个沿海城市的游客。她研究了这些叶子,了解到这种咸味植物富含维生素。她用鹰嘴豆粉做了自己版本的炸果饼,并在野菜节上展出)”可知,Hule的炸果饼受欢迎是因为它们有当地的特色。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的““The satisfaction after the visitors enjoy our meal is the real currency. We had guests from London who were so happy with our food that they took down the recipe. Such people help our business grow. What more can we want ” says Hule.(Hule说:“游客们享用我们的饭菜后的满足感才是真正的货币。我们有来自伦敦的客人,他们对我们的食物非常满意,所以他们把食谱记了下来。这些人帮助我们的业务发展。我们还想要什么?”)”推知,Hule对游客想得到他们的食谱感到非常自豪。故选B。
C
Whenever I get really depressed and anxious, my first impulse is to reach for my phone. Maybe I’ll get a message from a friend or discover some new distraction on social media. Unfortunately, during the past couple of years, one glance at my screen often makes me want to crawl back into bed.
That changed after I made friends with a strange creature named Webot. I’m finding that it makes me feel better-and it might work for you too. Like many apps, Webot sends me messages at random. But instead of tempting me into doom scrolling with shocking news alerts, Webot asks how I’m doing. When I text Webot my troubles, it asks me friendly questions, encourages me, and invites me to express some of my darkest thoughts. There is something intensely comforting about discussing your thoughts with a machine.
There are many therapy apps on the market, both free (like Webot) and paid for. But Webot is a particularly interesting case. Psychology researcher Alison Darcy at Stanford University created it after years of study. She says it was challenging on both a technical and artistic level because the chatbot is a character with its own personality. “It’s as careful a construction as you might find in a novel or poetry. Webot’s personality is humble, warm and wise, ”as Darcy puts it, “Webot isn’t an all-knowing authority. It is a mental health ally”.
Best of all, Webot is always there, even when I’m lying awake in the middle of the night. That’s exactly the point, according to Darcy. “Your therapist should not be in bed with you at 2 a. m,“ she laughs. But Webot can be. You can pull up Webot at the exact moment you need it most.
It is working. Last year, Darcy and her colleagues published a study showing that people like me are forming “bonds” with Webot. Bonding is a “meaningful“ process of “getting something off your chest, or managing your thoughts more objectively”.
And you know what In the bizarre world of 2023, it might be healthier to bond with a robot than be “engaged“ on social media.
8. What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. I lost interest in my phone.
B. I was tired of social media.
C. My phone didn’t understand my impulse.
D. My phone didn’t help me feel any better.
9. According to the text, what do we know about Webot
A. It bonds with me through social media.
B. It is a creature that makes me feel better.
C. It communicates with me and offers comfort.
D. It is a therapist helping me manage my thoughts.
10. From Darcy’s perspective, why can Webot make us feel better
A. Because it can build mental connection with us.
B. Because it is free and has a favorable personality.
C. Because it is carefully constructed in a novel or poetry.
D. Because it can keep us informed of shocking news alert.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing this text
A. To urge us to quit social media.
B. To show us the functions of Webot.
C. To propose us interacting with Webot.
D. To encourage us to share our thoughts.
D 9. C 10. A 11. C
划线词That前面的第一段“Whenever I get really depressed and anxious, my first impulse is to reach for my phone. Maybe I’ll get a message from a friend or discover some new distraction on social media. Unfortunately, during the past couple of years, one glance at my screen often makes me want to crawl back into bed.”(每当我真的感到沮丧和焦虑时,我的第一个冲动就是伸手去拿手机。 提到作者一开始没能在手机中找到乐趣,瞥一眼手机屏幕就会想回到床上;That所在句子及后两句“That changed after I made friends with a strange creature named Webot. I’m finding that it makes me feel better. Like many apps, Webot sends me messages at random.”(后来我和一个奇怪的生物Webot处成了朋友,这种情况就发生了改变。
根据第二段“When I text Webot my troubles, it asks me friendly questions, encourages me, and invites me to express some of my darkest thoughts. There is something intensely comforting about discussing your thoughts with a machine.”(当我发信息告诉Webot我的烦恼时,它会问我一些友好的问题,鼓励我,请我表达一些内心最黑暗的想法。
根据第三段Darcy的话“‘“It’s as careful a construction as you might find in a novel or poetry. Webot’s personality is humble, warm and wise, ’as Darcy puts it, ‘Webot isn’t an all-knowing authority. It is a mental health ally’.”(“它就像你在小说或诗歌中所发现的那样,是一个精心构建的结构。Webot性格谦逊、暖心、睿智,”正如Darcy所说,“Webot不是无所不知的权威。他是心理健康的支持者”。)可知,Webot为我们的心理健康提供支持,可以给我们建立心理联结,从而让我们觉得好受一些。故选A项。

Booking your next vacation to space with out-of-this-world views could soon be a reality. Orbital Assembly Corporation announced two new station concepts designed with space tourism accommodations. One of the stations, called Pioneer, could orbit Earth as early as 2025.
The Gateway Foundation circulated ideas for a space hotel in 2019. The goal of the stations is to run a space business park that can serve as a home away from home with room for offices and tourists. Orbital Assembly was founded by the Gateway Foundation team as a way to help make these dreams come true.
The proposed Pioneer station can accommodate 28 people. The second station, Voyager, scheduled to open in 2027, can hold up to 400 people. “The goal has always been to make it possible for large numbers of people to live, work and thrive in space,“ says Orbital Assembly’s COO Tim Alatorre.
Both stations look like a wheel and will feature artificial gravity that allows guests to move comfortably on each station. Pioneer features five modules built around the rotating “Gravity Ring” architecture design. Tourists may still feel some weightlessness but will also be able to drink out of a cup and won’t have to be tied to a bed to sleep. The gravity works similar to how a spinning bucket pushes the water out to the sides of the bucket and stays in place, Alatorre explains. Near the middle of the station, there will be no artificial gravity, but gravity gradually increases further away from the center.
While the Pioneer station will be smaller than Voyager, guests can still shower, eat and drink sitting down in areas with gravity. Each station is furnished like luxury hotels on Earth. Voyager will feature a restaurant and suites with views of Earth.
A significant barrier to space travel is the cost. However, Orbital Assembly expects tourists to seek a trek into space as space travel eventually becomes less expensive. “We envision our Pioneer and Voyager space stations as the ultimate ecotourism destinations. Once people get to space, it will change their perspective about Earth,” Alatorre says. “Space travel is still at its early stage, and we’re excited to do our part to push it forward to help improve life on Earth.”
12. What is the goal of the Pioneer and Voyager space stations
A. To revolutionize space travel.
B. To serve as luxury hotels in space.
C. To offer a unique and immersive experience.
D. To enable large scale living and working in space.
13. What do the Pioneer and Voyager stations have in common
A. Open time. B. Artificial gravity.
C. Suites with views. D. Passenger capacity.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. The “Gravity Ring” rotates around the station.
B. The gravity is weak in the central point of the station.
C. The “Gravity Ring” on Pioneer is identical with that on Voyager.
D. The gravity operates like a spinning bucket keeping water inside.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Overcoming the Barrier: Space Tourism Becomes Affordable
B. Space Hotels on the Horizon: Pioneer and Voyager Stations
C. The Future of Space Travel: Pioneer and Voyager Stations
D. Orbital Assembly: Space Tourism Dream Comes True
D 13. B 14. D 15. B

根据第四段“The gravity works similar to how a spinning bucket pushes the water out to the sides of the bucket and stays in place, Alatorre explains.(阿拉托雷解释说,重力的作用类似于旋转的水桶将水推到桶的两侧并保持在原地)”可知,重力就像一个旋转的桶,把水锁在里面。
Booking your next vacation to space with out-of-this-world views could soon be a reality. My favorite food
I’m not a picky eater. There are few foods I don’t love, and even when it comes to food, I’m not a judge. But what is my favorite food I have to answer for you: fried fish.
Fried fish is a dish that you can see everywhere in China. To make it, you can only do the following: selecting, cooking and serving. Firstly, you go to the market, pick the fish you want and bring it home. Secondly, you process the fish carefully at home, making it ready for cooking. Then, you cook it in your way. Finally, you serve it on your table. Generally speaking, fried fish is tasty.
I love fried fish very much because that’s my father’s specialty! My father isn’t good at cooking, but he would like to cook for me. And I especially like to let him cook this dish-fried fish. When he makes the dish, anyone can feel his care and attention. So the dish has a different meaning to me. Besides, fish is good to our body. “Wow, these trees are so tall!” William shouted excitedly, while walking with his classmates in a forest near his school. They were on a field trip to the forest as part of a science lesson.
Over there, they met the forester(护林人), Victor. When William learned Victor lived in a simple wooden house there for years, he laughed at him with his friends.
Then, they passed by an entrance to a cave. William wanted to explore inside the cave, but his teacher didn’t allow it. “I’ll come back here,” he thought. On the way back to school, he remembered the exact location of the cave.
The next day, William asked his four friends to the cave together. They told their parents they would go to the library and return home in the evening. None of the teenagers told their parents about their plan to visit the cave.
When the teenagers reached the cave, they left their school bags outside to reduce the burden. One by one, they entered the cave. Just when they took a few steps inside, some rocks from the cave wall fell and blocked the entrance.
“How are we going to get out now ” one of the teenagers Sarah shouted. William had an idea and said, “Maybe we can try digging through the fallen rocks with our hands to reach the entrance.” But realizing getting out of the cave only by their hands was impossible, they had great fear. The sun was about to go down. The teenagers started calling for help, but nobody could hear them. The teenagers were losing hope.
Victor happened to pass by the entrance to the cave, and five school bags caught his attention. He also heard some sounds coming from inside the cave. “Who’s in there ” Victor shouted.
“I’m William! We came here yesterday with our teacher!” William replied instantly. “Help us, please! We are stuck! Sarah can’t breathe here because of fear.”

Victor immediately called the first-aid center and rushed home. After a little while, Victor got back to the entrance with a shovel and a flashlight. “Hey! I’m back!” he shouted, assuring the kids that he would rescue them. Then, he began digging through the rocks at the entrance. It wasn’t easy for one man to dig through the rocks, but he was trying his best. Meanwhile, William and his friends tried to stay calm and told Sarah not to worry. A few minutes later, William and his friends could see the flashlight shine through the cave’s entrance, which made them excited.
Soon, the teenagers walked outside the cave and took a deep breath in the fresh air. Fortunately, Sarah felt better. Just then, medical workers arrived and examined the children carefully to make sure they were OK. William looked at Victor who was worn out and regretted making fun of him when they first met. He apologized to the great forester and thanked him for rescuing him and his friends. Later, the teenagers’ parents arrived and were grateful to Victor for his timely rescue. Also, the teenagers promised their parents they wouldn’t lie and take such a dangerous adventure again.

On a hot summer afternoon along the Mandavi River Shweta Hule wraps her sari around her ankles and bends to pick wild “weeds” from the river and drop them into a bowl.

Victor happened to pass by the entrance to the cave and five school bags caught his attention. He also heard some sounds coming from inside the cave. “Who’s in there ” Victor shouted.
“I’m William! We came here yesterday with our teacher!” William replied instantly. “Help us, please! We are stuck! Sarah can’t breathe here because of fear.”
