In dreaming up the programme Tennis and Literacy for Youth, as a mother, I had hoped to share two of my passions, tennis and reading, with children. Throughout the year, I had advertised for participants at local elementary schools and volunteers at local high schools. With the help of kind people, I applied for money. I was even able to secure a camp site for the programme.
But on the first day of camp, despite my careful planning, things did not go the way I had hoped. Hector and Adrian exchanged blows with their tennis rackets. Hector struggled to his feet moments later, covering a bloody nose with one hand. Georgie and Eduardo threw balls at each other. Then during the reading time, I raced from joyless child to demanding child, unable to persuade even one to open a book. Mylea told me they would rather be watching Nickelodeon at home than learning stupid tennis and reading boring books.
That evening, tired as I was, I called my volunteers together for a meeting, and redesigned the entire curriculum. We created a good fellow system, where each volunteer paired with a camper to help him or her during reading time. To stress praise and progress, we established weekly prize ceremonies, presenting awards for most improved reading, tennis and behavior.
In the following days, these children, once in bad mood during reading time, untouched books in their laps, began to find joy in reading a story and playing tennis.
One day, Mylea shut the book and asked me, “Can I take this to read it to my mom tonight ” Looking up at her eager face, I couldn’t help myself. I jumped to my feet and wrapped her in a hug, lifting her right off the ground. “It’s all yours!” I overjoyed.

Having friends is obviously good for countless reasons. And showing the world that you have lots of friends, for example on social media, seems like a great idea. If that is the truth, your goal is to enlarge your social network. Once people see how popular you are, they’ll want to join that popular circle, perhaps in the hope that some of your popularity will rub off on them. Thus, they may enlarge their friend circle.
However, can a person even have too many friends at the same time It’s always been a misunderstanding that if you have more friends, people will be more likely to want to be friends with you.
In fact, a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that having too many friends may work against you. In a series of experiments, the authors prove that people usually prefer to befriend those who have fewer friends than they do, rather than those with more friends. The authors call this phenomenon (现象) the “friend-number paradox (悖论)”, which is also the title of their new paper.
Social ties are obviously important. Having more of these connections suggests greater social value, and more potential possibilities. So it seems reasonable to assume that people will focus their social energies on making friends with people who have lots of friends already.
But the problem is that these social ties are only valuable if there’s reciprocity (互惠) involved. Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friendsmay not be able to carry out those responsibilities— especially those with too many friends.
In other words, “friendship quality” matters as much, if not more, than only the number of friends you have. Having lots of friends means your valuable social resources become dilute (稀释), making you less able to be a good friend. And other people will consider the fact when deciding whether to make friends with you. They don’t want to spend their valuable social resources on someone who is unlikely to pay it back.
8. What do the underlined words “rub off on” in paragraph l mean
A. Look forward to.
B. Hold on to.
C. Have an impact on.
D. Take control of.
9. What does the “friend-number paradox” show
A. The secrets to becoming popular.
B. The ways of winning more friends.
C. The advantages of having many friends.
D. The problems with having many friends.
10. What does the author think of people with lots of friends
A. They don’t know about reciprocity.
B. They may fail to perform their duties.
C. They are more likely to be good friends.
D. They have more valuable social resources.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. How Do People Choose Their Friends
B. More Friends Are Not Necessarily Better
C. Why Do People Like Having More Friends
D. People With More Friends Are More Popular
D
For some people, nothing beats a long walk on a sandy beach. But there’s no denying that it’s not as easy or as fast to get around on the beach as it is on a road or a sidewalk. But why is it so hard to walk on sand
The problem with sand is that it’s soft; you “sink in” at each step. This forces you to use 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy with every step you take. Another idea is that people walk more difficultly on soft than they do on hard surfaces, a study found. The researchers compared how people walked on foam (泡沫) and hard surfaces by counting the forces under their feet and how much each person needed. They found that walking on softsurfaces, such as sand, mud and snow caused people to take longer steps — actions that use more energy than walking on a hard surface.
But as experienced beach walkers know, there’s a way to make it easier to walk on sand: Just add water. When sand is wet, it becomes more compact (紧密), and walking on it is more similar to walking on hard surface. In other words, it’s much easier to cross a beach by walking along the shoreline, where the waves roll in and out. This is a balance though; too much water could make the sand soft once again. If water isn’t an option, there is another way to make walking on sand easier — increasing your surface area. This could be achieved by wearing shoes.
Although it’s more difficult, there are some good reasons to exercise on sand. The impact forces are lower on sand than on hard surface. Research suggests that walking across sand is much easier on your joints (关节) and muscles, especially compared with a hard and unfriendly surface such as concrete. That’s why sand is a better surface for helping athletes recover more quickly from exercise.
12. Why is the question raised in the first paragraph
A. To show problems.
B. To call up readers’ memories.
C. To invite readers to answer it.
D. To draw readers’ attention to the topic.
13 How can you walk on sand more easily
A. By putting on shoes.
B. By taking longer steps.
C. By walking in the water.
D. By using special breath methods.
14. The passage is probably taken from_________.
A. A science magazine.
B. A guide book.
C. A journal entry.
D. A poster for clubs.
15. What may be the best title for the text
A. Tips for Beach Vacation
B. All kinds of Sports on the Sand

Having lots of friends means your valuable social resources become dilute (稀释的), making you less able to be a good friend. And other people will consider the fact when deciding whether to make friends with you. They don’t want to spend their valuable social resources on someone who is unlikely to pay it back.
8. What do the underlined words “rub off on” in paragraph l mean
A Look forward to.
B. Hold on to.
C. Have an impact on.
D. Take control of.
9. What does the “friend-number paradox” show
A. The secrets to becoming popular.
B. The ways of winning more friends.
C. The advantages of having many friends.
D. The problems with having many friends.
10. What does the author think of people with lots of friends
A. They don’t know about reciprocity.
B. They may fail to perform their duties.
C. They are more likely to be good friends.
D. They have more valuable social resources.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. How Do People Choose Their Friends
B. More Friends Are Not Necessarily Better
C. Why Do People Like Having More Friends
D. People With More Friends Are More Popular
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. B

【9题详解】

The authors call this phenomenon the “friend-number paradox”, which is also the title of their new paper.(事实上,发表在《个性与社会心理学杂志》上的一项新研究表明,朋友太多可能会对你不利。

根据文章第二段“However, can a person even have too many friends at the same time It’s always been a misunderstanding that if you have more friends, people will be more likely to want to be friends with you.(然而,一个人能同时拥有太多的朋友吗 如果你有更多的朋友,人们就会更愿意和你做朋友,这一直是一个误解)”及最后一段“In other words, “friendship quality” matters as much, if not more, than only the number of friends you have. Having lots of friends means your valuable social resources become dilute, making you less able to be a good friend.(换句话说,“友谊的质量”与你拥有的朋友的数量一样重要,甚至更重要。拥有太多的朋友意味着你宝贵的社会资源被稀释,使你不能成为一个好朋友)”及全文内容可知,本文介绍了拥有太多的朋友不一定就越好,友谊的质量更重要。B选项“朋友不一定越多越好”与本文主旨相符,可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选B项。

【答案】Dear Sir/Madam
Learning that new members for English Club are wanted in our school, I’m writing to apply for the position.
I think I am quite equal to the post. To begin with, being exposed to English since a young age enables me to communicate fluently with others. Besides, not only am I outgoing and energetic, but also I am friendly and sociable. So, I can get along well with other members. Additionally, I can make full use of my time to take part in a wide range of activities.
I would be grateful if you could take my application into consideration. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

His mom asked about his low grades in the recent exam. Stephen didn’t care too much about his carelessness and did not reply to her well. She scolded (责备) him again in the evening for being so careless. He quarreled with his mother. The quarrel ended up so badly that Stephen left his home.
He walked for more than hours. He smelled a nice flavor from a shop and was attracted by the sweet smell. He couldn’t resist the smell of that nice flavor and he felt very hungry.
It was a small noodles shop and he stopped by the shop. Suddenly he realized there was not even a single penny in his pocket. Tired and hungry, he stood there for a minute but decided to leave. The shop owner saw him and asked him to have some food.
Stephen said he had no money to pay for the food. The shop owner smiled, saying, “It’s OK. I won’t ask you any money.”
The shop owner prepared a hot bowl of sweet and delicious noodles. Stephen ate the noodles, feeling that he owed something to the shop owner. He promised to return his favor. Stephen was in tears when he ate the noodles. The shop owner asked what happened to him.

【答案】
Hearing this, the shop owner smiled and approached Stephen. He patted the boy’s shoulder and said, “Hey, young guy, think about how much your mom loves you.” Stephen thought of the moment when he was a little kid. In fact, his mother carried him in her arms. She cooked the delicious food for him. She played games with him. He also remembered that when he failed in the exam, she comforted him with all her heart and kept him company over the night. She was there for him whenever he needed her.
Stephen realized his mistake and thanked the shop owner: He rushed home in a hurry. He saw his mother standing at the door with tears in her eyes. Seeing his coming, his mother stepped forward, saying, “You must be hungry! I have cooked the meal you like e and have it now.” He hugged his mother tightly, streaming with tears and said. “I am terribly sorry, Mom. I am wrong and I will never quarrel with you again. I love you.”
