Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
24. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study
A. Talking about their lifestyles. B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale. D. Answering questions about screen time use.
25. What do the researchers find about teenage girls
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
26. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
27. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
C
“I feel unlikable, lonely and hopeless,” said Lisa, a bright teenager from a loving home. “It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What’s wrong with me ”
Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character experience loneliness at least sometimes. It’s healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. We all need others in our lives.
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection (拒绝), many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We take a safer way and wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends, we’ve got to get beyond this.
If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider the following two.
Be willing to take the initiative (主动权). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non-aggressive (无攻击性的) way that you are interested in being friends with her.
Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she likes to do or asking about her family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied with “yes” or “no”. For example, don’t ask “Do you have a dog ” Instead, say “So, tell me about your pets.” Avoiding asking “yes” or “no” questions makes your possible friend not end your communication with a one-word answer.
28. Why does the author begin the text with Lisa’s worry
A. To set a sad tone. B. To share Lisa’s pain.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To teach readers a lesson.
29. What can be a risk caused by reaching out to others according to the passage
A. Being refused by others. B. Putting ourselves in danger.
C. Being treated in a rude way. D. Losing interest in communicating.
30. What can we know from Paragraph 5
A. Shy people are hard to talk to. B. Popular people are often easy-going.
C. Just waiting for chances will waste our time. D. A proper way is important in making friends.
31. Why does the author suggest not asking “yes” or “no” questions
A. It is considered unfriendly. B. It will leave a bad first impression.
C. It shows the poor quality of the speaker. D. It isn’t good for keeping a conversation going.
D
Thanks to its cold environment, Antarctica (南极洲) remained largely untouched by humans for thousands of years. However, since the 1990s, the last true wilderness on the planet is becoming an increasingly popular destination for tourists. Now, a new study shows that the visitors may be bringing harmful bacteria which could devastate the area’s native bird population.
Researchers believed that the Antarctic creatures were not affected by the danger due to the continent’s extreme weather. However, microbiologist Martà Cerdà-Cuéllar didn’t believe this was true. She and some colleagues decided to examine samples from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. This was no easy task. If they missed catching a skua at first go, the bird never came close again.
It took the scientists four years, from 2008 to 2011, to collect fecal (粪便) samples of 666 adult birds from 24 local species. The results of their study showed the presence of several types of human bacteria in the bird waste.
“While we should do as much as possible to reduce transmission , it’s hard to believe that we can stop tourism and science at these sites, and so it is hard to believe that humans won’t continue to transmit pathogens (病原体),” said Kyle Elliott.
Experts, including González-Solís, believe the only way to prevent the destruction of the birds, is to introduce stricter regulations or, at least, obey the ones already in place. For example, while the Antarctica Treaty states clearly visitors carry their waste back home to protect the original environment, the regulation is rarely obeyed. Hopefully, officials will take steps to protect the easily injured birds as soon as possible.
32. What does the underlined word “devastate” in Para. 1 mean
A. Increase. B. Reduce. C. Affect. D. Promote.
33. What can be said about scientists finding the waste from the birds
A. This was not an easy task. B. This proved their conclusion.
C. Their tempers contributed a lot. D. They found polluted human bacteria.
34. How does Kyle Elliott feel when mentioning reducing tourism
A. Hopeful. B. Difficult. C. Possible. D. Delighted.
35. What’s author’s suggestions to protect Antarctic birds
A. Make new strict rules. B. Take measures as soon as possible.
C. Quit the Antarctic Treaty D. Encourage officials to strengthen cooperation.

W: Gardens come in all shapes and sizes. When planning a garden, the most important thing is to grow what you love. This way, you’ll be sure to enjoy the process. Once you decide what type of garden you’d like to start, you’ll need to plan a few things before getting to work. Firstly, figure out where your garden will be. Find a location that is fairly flat and has good access to sunlight. Secondly, pick the right soil. This is important for an efficient garden. An expert at a gardening store can advise you on the best soil for your needs. Thirdly, after you have the correct soil, choose your plants. Will you start with seeds or young plants Growing from seeds is often less expensive. And it’s more satisfying because you get to watch the growth from seed to plant. But growing from young plants is easier. There’s a better chance your plant will grow big enough. You’re finally ready to plant your garden. I suggest planting right before the growing season so that the plants can adapt to the soil.

C 29. A 30. D 31. D
第一段“‘I feel unlikable, lonely and hopeless,’ said Lisa, a bright teenager from a loving home. ‘It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What’s wrong with me ’(“我觉得自己不讨人喜欢、孤独、绝望,”丽莎说,她是一个聪明的少女,来自一个充满爱的家庭。“似乎没有人想成为我的朋友。我怎么了 ”)”描述了丽莎对交友的担忧:没有人想和她成为朋友。第二段中“Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character experience loneliness at least sometimes.(像丽莎一样,我们中的许多人都经历过孤独。事实是,所有的人,无论他们的年龄或性格如何,至少有时会经历孤独。)”从丽莎谈到所有人,进而引出本文的话题:如何交到朋友。所以作者以丽莎的担忧作为文章的开头是为了引出文章话题。故选C项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection (拒绝), many of us are unwilling to reach out to others.(但它也有风险。因为我们经常害怕被拒绝,我们中的许多人都不愿意与他人接触。)”可知,主动与他人接触可能会遇到被别人拒绝风险。故选A项。

B 33. A 34. B 35. B

根据第一段上文“Now, a new study shows that the visitors may be bringing harmful bacteria(现在,一项新的研究表明,游客可能携带有害细菌)”以及下文“the area’s native bird population(该地区的本地鸟类种群)”可推理出第一段划线词的含义为“减少”,故选B项。
根据第二段中“To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. This was no easy task. If they missed catching a skua at first go, the bird never came close again.(为了确保废物不被污染,科学家们不得不从鸟类身上收集排泄物。这不是一件容易的事。如果他们一开始就没抓到贼鸥,那这只鸟就再也不会靠近了。)”可知,关于科学家从鸟类的身上手机排泄物这不是一件容易的事,因为如果科学家们一开始就没抓到贼鸥,那这只鸟就再也不会靠近了,故选A项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中““While we should do as much as possible to reduce transmission(传播), it’s hard to believe that we can stop tourism and science at these sites, and so it is hard to believe that humans won’t continue to transmit pathogens (病原体),” said Kyle Elliott.( 凯尔·艾略特说:“虽然我们应该尽最大努力减少传播,但很难相信我们能阻止这些地方的旅游和科学活动,因此很难相信人类不会继续传播病原体。”)”
根据最后一段中“Hopefully, officials will take steps to protect the easily injured birds as soon as possible.(希望官员们能尽快采取措施保护这些容易受伤的鸟类。)”

Playing sports is a lot of fun. Getting hurt is not.____36____
Wear protective equipment.
The equipment you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets (头盔) are the most common protective equipment. They protect your head while you’re playing football, baseball, softball, and so on.
Warm up.
____37____ Doing some stretches (伸展) can get you prepared to hit the field. By warming up, you get yourself ready to play. Practicing a sport helps keep you safe, too.
Know the rules of the games.
Traffic lights help prevent crashes between many cars that run on the road together. This works because drivers know the rules and follow them—at least most of the time.____38____ When players know the rules of the game, fewer injuries happen. For example, you know that in soccer you can’t come from behind, crash into a player’s legs, or steal the ball. It’s legal and safer to go after the ball rather than the player.
____39____
This is a really important one. If you love sports, you may want to get back in the games, even after an injury. But playing when you’re hurt is a bad idea.____40____
Now you know how to prevent sports injuries. If you follow these rules, you can stay safer while you are playing sports.
A. Don’t play when you’re injured.
B. Don’t do too much exercise.
C. It’s the same with sports.
D. It can lead to an even worse injury.
