Nikos was an ordinary man. He went through life accepting the mixture of good things and bad things. He never looked for any explanation or reason about why things happened just the way they did.
One morning Nikos woke up. He started to shave, as he did every morning, but then he noticed that the mirror on the bathroom wall wasn’t quite straight. He tried to adjust it, but as soon as he touched it, the mirror fell off the wall and hit the floor with a huge crash. It broke into a thousand pieces. Nikos knew that some people thought this was unlucky. “Seven years’ bad luck,” they said, “when a mirror broke.” But Nikos didn’t care.
After that he went to make himself a sandwich, which needed some tomato sauce. When he picked up a jar of tomato sauce, it fell from his hand. Tomato sauce was everywhere. Some people, he knew, thought that this was also supposed to bring bad luck. But Nikos didn’t care.
On his way to work, he saw a black cat running away from him. He didn’t care.
Even though Nikos wasn’t superstitious, he thought that something bad was certain to happen to him today. He told everybody at work what had happened. “Something bad will happen to you today,” they all said. But nothing bad happened to him.
That evening, his friend thought Nikos was going to have bad things. However, whatever they played, Nikos won. “Go on then, Nikos,” his friend shouted, “use all the money you have won to buy some lottery tickets!” Nikos did it. The next day, everybody was watching the draw for the lottery on TV. The first number came out, for the third prize. It was Nikos’ number. Then the second number, for the second prize. It was Nikos’ number. Then the first prize. It was Nikos’ number as well.
He WON all three of the big lottery prizes!
4. The following things are thought of as the signs of unluck EXCEPT ________.
A. A black cat B. A sandwich with tomato sauce
C. A broken mirror D. Spilt tomato sauce
5. What does the underlined word “superstitious” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Not studying or looking at things thoroughly.
B Controlling bad luck to become good fortune.
C. Believing certain events bring good or bad luck.
D. Taking actions to keep bad things from occurring.
6. Why did Nikos’ friend recommend him to buy lottery tickets
A. To test his luck. B. To change his fortune.
C. To bring in more money. D. To use up all the money.
7. What can we infer from the passage
A. Nikos went to great lengths to know what lay behind all the things.
B. The mirror on the bathroom wall broke into pieces out of no reason.
C. The occasional things failed to convince Nikos of the coming bad luck.
D. Nikos’ story tells what happens in life has nothing to do with the evil signs.
B 5. C 6. A 7. D

根据第二段““Seven years’ bad luck,” they said, “when a mirror broke.” ”(“七年的霉运,”他们说,“因为一面镜子碎了。”)、第三段“Tomato sauce was everywhere. Some people, he knew, thought that this was also supposed to bring bad luck.”(番茄酱到处都是。 和第四段“On his way to work, he saw a black cat running away from him.
可知,前后两句之间为转折关系,故结合“he thought that something bad was certain to happen to him today.”(他想今天一定会有坏事发生在他身上。)
根据倒数第二段“That evening, his friend thought Nikos was going to have bad things. However, whatever they played, Nikos won. “Go on then, Nikos,” his friend shouted, “use all the money you have won to buy some lottery tickets!” ”(那天晚上,他的朋友认为尼克斯会有不好的事情发生。然而,无论他们玩什么,尼克斯都赢了。“去吧,尼克斯,”他的朋友喊道,“用你赢来的钱去买彩票吧!”)可知,因为之前的征兆,朋友们都认为尼克斯当天会有厄运,遇上祸事,所以让他去买彩票,是想验证一下他们的想法,试试他的运气。故选A。
根据最后一段“He WON all three of the big lottery prizes!”(他中了所有三个大奖!)
C
People consistently underestimate (低估) how much they would like to spend time alone with their own thoughts, without anything to disturb them. Therefore, people prefer keeping themselves busy with devices and other distractions, rather than taking a moment for reflection and imagination in daily life.
Researchers from American Psychological Association contrasted people’s estimates of how much they would enjoy just sitting and thinking with their actual experiences of doing so in a series of six tests involving a total of259 individuals. In the experiment, participants were asked to estimate how much they would like to spend time with their own thoughts, without the presence of anyone else. They weren’t permitted to engage in any distracting activities, such as reading, moving about, or glancing at a smartphone. People indicated their enjoyment of it afterward.
The researchers discovered that participants valued thinking time far more than they had assumed. This held regardless of whether participants were seated in a barren conference room or a small, dark tent area with no visual stimulation (刺激), and regardless of whether the thinking period lasted 3 minutes or 20 minutes.
These results are especially important in our modern era of information overload and constant access to distractions, according to study co-author Kou Murayama. “It’s now extremely easy to ‘kill time’ with screen devices,” he said.“ However, if that prediction is inaccurate, you’re missing an opportunity to positively engage yourself without relying on such stimulation.”
That missed opportunity comes at a cost because previous studies have shown that spending time thinking has some benefits, according to the researchers. It can help people solve problems, enhance their creativity and even help them find meaning in life.
It’s important to note that participants didn’t rate thinking as an extremely enjoyable task but simply as more enjoyable than they had thought. On average, participants’ enjoyment level was around 3 to 4 on a 7-point scale. “Not all thinking is rewarding and motivating, and in fact, some people are likely to get into harmful cycles of negative thinking. The results also need to be replicated (复制) in more diverse population s than in the current study, in which all participants were college students in Japan or the UK,” the researchers said.
8. What do people usually fail to realize
A. When to let their minds race.
B. How enjoyable it is to be lost in thought.
C. Why they are always distracted by e-devices.
D. How long they can focus on doing something.
9. What can we say about the experiment
A. It gave participants far greater freedom.
B. It was expected to last at least 20 minutes.
C. It involved complex thinking and reasoning tasks.
D. It was conducted in a relatively silent environment.
10. What’s the implication of the study findings
A. Try to find meaning in life.
B. Think twice before we leap.
C. Stay curious about the world.
D. Take time to let our minds wander.
11. What do the words of the researchers suggest
A. The research needs further exploration.
B. The scoring standard needs reassessing.
C. We should take advantage of the findings.
D. We should interview the study participants.
B 9. D 10. D 11. A

根据文章第一段“People consistently underestimate (低估) how much they would like to spend time alone with their own thoughts, without anything to disturb them.(人们总是低估他们有多想花时间独自思考,没有任何东西打扰他们)”可知,人们往往意识不到陷入沉思是一件多么令人愉快的事。
根据文章第二段“In the experiment, participants were asked to estimate how much they would like to spend time with their own thoughts, without the presence of anyone else.(在实验中,参与者被要求估计在没有其他人在场的情况下,他们愿意花多少时间来思考自己的想法)”和第三段“This held regardless of whether participants were seated in a barren conference room or a small, dark tent area with no visual stimulation (刺激), and regardless of whether the thinking period lasted 3 minutes or 20 minutes.(不管参与者是坐在一个空荡荡的会议室里,还是坐在一个没有视觉刺激的小而黑暗的帐篷里,也不管思考时间是3分钟还是20分钟,结果都是一样的)”可推知,这个实验是在一个相对安静的环境中进行的。
根据文章第五段“That missed opportunity comes at a cost because previous studies have shown that spending time thinking has some benefits, according to the researchers. It can help people solve problems, enhance their creativity and even help them find meaning in life.(研究人员表示,错失机会是有代价的,因为之前的研究表明,花时间思考有一些好处。它可以帮助人们解决问题,增强他们的创造力,甚至帮助他们找到生活的意义)”可知,研究结果表明我们花时间思考可以帮助解决问题、增强创造力,甚至帮助找到生活的意义,即让我们的思想自由。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““Not all thinking is rewarding and motivating, and in fact, some people are likely to get into harmful cycles of negative thinking. The results also need to be replicated (复制) in more diverse population s than in the current study, in which all participants were college students in Japan or the UK,” the researchers said.(研究人员说:“并不是所有的思考都是有益的和激励的,事实上,有些人可能会陷入消极思维的有害循环。研究结果还需要在更多样化的人群中进行验证,而不是在目前的研究中,所有参与者都是日本或英国的大学生。”)”可知,研究者的话表明该研究有待进一步探索。故选A。
D
Not only do some mosquito (蚊子) species show very strong likes for obtaining their blood meals from humans, they also appear to discriminate (歧视) one person from another when choosing their next meal.
It has long been thought that the blood type is an important factor that influences mosquitoes’ choices. A previous study published in Nature found mosquitoes landed on people with type O blood nearly twice as often as on those with type A blood and that people with type B blood fell somewhere in between the above two. Relatively speaking, people with type AB blood are much luckier than those with type A blood.
There are also many old wives’ tales about mosquito bites. Some think that having fair skin, being sweaty and even eating food with garlic can influence biting rates one way or the other. There are plenty of these anecdotes and they don’t appear to have much influence when scientifically tested. That’s why a great deal of research effort is put into understanding mosquitoes’ feeding choices.
All mosquito species use CO as a long-range indicator of nearby people. However, CO is everywhere and provides little information to help a specialist mosquito identify its preferred target. Lactic (relating to milk) acid has been demonstrated to be a significant attractant alongside CO and is much more common in humans than in other animals. Other chemicals also help supplement the human odor (气味).
But a recent study has found the best evidence for what leads to a mosquito’s choice among different people — the variation in our skin microorganisms (微生物). These microorganisms are mostly not disease-causing bacteria which live on our skin. The odor combination they give off is the critical factor in telling mosquitoes how tasty we’d be. We have an estimated one million bacteria per square cm of skin, often containing hundreds of species.
Using a special method to get the particular chemicals from people who seem to rarely attract mosquitoes, scientists at the UK’s Roth Amsted Research have found these natural substances that mosquitoes don’t seem to find appealing. Eventually, including these substances into advanced bug spray could make it possible for people to keep off mosquitoes for good.
12. What do we learn about the anecdotes about mosquitoes
A. They mostly have something to do with daily diets.
B. They lay the foundations for further study.
C. They lack solid scientific evidence.
D. They all originate from old tales.
13. How do mosquitoes find target food according to the recent study
A. By releasing an odor to numb human skin.
B. By calculating the density of CO around them.
C. By stimulating their receptors of some chemicals.
D. By following the odor of human skin microorganisms.
14. What do scientists of Roth Amsted Research aim to do
A. Develop effective anti-mosquito products.
B. Find out factors that affect the human odor.
C. Seek cures for diseases caused by mosquitoes.
D. Explore the composition of skin microorganisms.
15. What would be the best title for the text
A. Why is it important to prevent mosquito bites
B. Why do mosquitoes prefer some people to others
C. Why are certain chemicals attractive to mosquitoes
D. Why are microorganisms so important to people’s health
C 13. D 14. A 15. B
根据第三段的“There are plenty of these anecdotes and they don’t appear to have much influence when scientifically tested.(有很多这样的轶事,但经过科学测试,它们似乎没有太大的影响)”可知,我们从关于蚊子的轶事中了解到它们缺乏可靠的科学证据。
根据第五段的“But a recent study has found the best evidence for what leads to a mosquito’s choice among different people — the variation in our skin microorganisms. These microorganisms are mostly not disease-causing bacteria which live on our skin. The odor combination they give off is the critical factor in telling mosquitoes how tasty we’d be. (但最近的一项研究发现了最好的证据,证明是什么导致蚊子在不同的人中做出选择——我们皮肤微生物的差异。这些微生物大多不是生活在我们皮肤上的致病细菌。它们发出的气味组合是告诉蚊子我们的血液有多好吃的关键因素) ”可知,根据最近的研究,蚊子是通过追踪人体皮肤微生物的气味找到目标食物的。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“Using a special method to get the particular chemicals from people who seem to rarely attract mosquitoes, scientists at the UK’s Roth Amsted Research have found these natural substances that mosquitoes don’t seem to find appealing. 【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段的“Not only do some mosquito species show very strong likes for obtaining their blood meals from humans, they also appear to discriminate one person from another when choosing their next meal.(一些蚊子不仅非常喜欢从人类身上获取血餐,而且在选择下一餐时,它们似乎也会区分不同的人)”和第二段的“It has long been thought that the blood type is an important factor that influences mosquitoes’ choices. A previous study published in Nature found mosquitoes landed on people with type O blood nearly twice as often as on those with type A blood and that people with type B blood fell somewhere in between the above two. Relatively speaking, people with type AB blood are much luckier than those with type A blood.(长期以来,人们一直认为血型是影响蚊子选择的一个重要因素。此前发表在《自然》杂志上的一项研究发现,蚊子落在O型血人身上的几率几乎是A型血人的两倍,而B型血的人落在这两者之间。相对而言,AB型血的人比A型血的人幸运得多)”以及第五段的“But a recent study has found the best evidence for what leads to a mosquito’s choice among different people — the variation in our skin microorganisms. These microorganisms are mostly not disease-causing bacteria which live on our skin. The odor combination they give off is the critical factor in telling mosquitoes how tasty we’d be.
Julie Kenerson loved taking her two sons Lukas and his brother Jake who used a wheelchair due to his rare illness, to the Charlestown playground in Mayor Thomas M. Menino Park. ____16____ Lukas and Jake could spin on the carousel (旋转木马) together and slide down slides at the same time. They also loved Martin’s Park in the Seaport District, where they could go on adventures in the wooden fishing boat.
____17____ “I’d be sitting there with Jake singing songs because there was really nothing for him to play with,” Julie said about the lack of wheelchair-friendly playground elements at many other town playgrounds.
In 2019, Jake passed away at age 11 from complications of his metabolic (新陈代谢的) disorder. ___18___ She started with their hometown of Arlington, where Julie worked with local officials to make playgrounds more welcome to kids and caregivers with disabilities.

Parents like Julie are telling public officials and planners that more work still needs to be done to make playgrounds truly inclusive. ____19____ In Arlington, workers will start construction next month on a new playground design that incorporates Julie’s feedback.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which requires equal access for people with disabilities in public spaces, was passed in 1990. But it didn’t specifically address outdoor recreation in its original regulations. Updated guidance came in 2010, and any playground that is now built or renovated must be ADA-compliant. But, according to Julie, there is a gap between what she calls “ADA on paper” and “the lived experience of ADA”. ____20____
A. Fortunately, those in charge are listening.
B. But not all playgrounds were accessible to Jake.
C. However, some officials turn a deaf ear to Julie’s requests.
D. The playground has plenty of wheelchair-accessible designs.

On his way to work he saw a black cat running away from him.
B. Controlling bad luck to become good fortune.
B They lay the foundations for further study.
