The life of a premature(早产的)baby born during the winter storm in Texas was saved thanks to a team of medical professionals, including a doctor and two nurses who travelled from East Austin to Marble Falls in an effort to save a newborn baby's life.
When Arias began experiencing pains, she and her parents headed to the closest hospital, Baylor Scott &White. Arias gave birth to her daughter, Zaylynn, who weighed just over one pound and was in need of advanced special care. However, the hospital does not offer the specialized care premature babies require.
"We had five or six people out at the nurses' station calling hospital networks all over the state of Texas," said Meredith Schubert, the labor and delivery nurse on duty when Arias arrived. "Nobody could answer our cry for help."
They finally reached Dr. John Loyd through a patient, division neonatologist(新生儿学专家) chief at Dell Children's Medical Center in Austin, Texas. Around 5 pm, after already having worked a full shift, Loyd packed his SUV with equipment and he and two nurses set out for Marble Falls, about 55 miles away. The drive took Loyd and the nurses about two hours as they drove in the night through ice and snow.
After safely arriving at the medical center in Marble Falls around 8 pm, the Dell Children's crew set up a temporary newborn ICU. Together, the Dell Children's and Baylor Scott & White teams worked around the clock to care for the mother and daughter.
Once the weather cleared enough to allow for a helicopter to safely land, Zaylynn was transferred to Dell Children's, where there is a Level IV newborn intensive care unit.
Schubert said. "It was a huge relief and a sense of accomplishment and joy that Zaylynn finally got to the place that she needed to be."
Arias said that she was grateful to the doctors and nurses who worked together to save her daughter.

One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.
When we see something we don't like, we wish it could be different. We cry out for something better. That may be human nature, or perhaps it's something ingrained(根深蒂固的) in our culture. The root of the unhappiness isn't necessarily that we want things to be different. However, it's that we decided we didn't like it in the first place. We've judged it as bad, rather than saying, "It's not bad or good, and it just is it."
In one of my books, I said, "You should expect people to mess up and expect things to go differently than you planned ". Some readers said it's too sorrowful to expect things to go wrong. However, it's only negative if you see it as negative and judge it as bad. Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works and try to understand why that is.
This can be applied to whatever you do: how other people act at work, how politics works and how depressing the news media can be. Accept these things as they are, and try to understand why they're that way. It will save you a lot of sadness, because you'll no longer say, "Oh. I wish bad things didn't happen!"
Does it mean you can never change things Not at all, but change things not because you can't accept things as they are, but because you enjoy the process of changing, learning and growing.
Can we make this world a better place You can say that you'll continue to try to do things to help others, to grow as a person, to make a difference in this world. That's the correct path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path. Therefore, when you find yourself judging and wishing for difference, try a different approach: accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results.
28. The author believes that we feel unhappy maybe because ______
A. it is our natural emotion in the life.
B. we dislike something in the beginning.
C. culture asks us to be different from others.
D. everyone has their own opinions on things.
29. What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Acting well at work and in politics.
B. Feeling depressed for the news media.
C. Accepting and understanding what has happened.
D. Saying something negative when bad things come.
30. What are you advised to do according to the last paragraph
A. Help others to change the things they hate.
B. Try a new way when making the world better.
C. Enjoy what you have to do in the work.
D. Judge yourself and make a wish for you.
31. What is the main theme of the passage
A. Expecting things to be different gives us hope.
B. Traditional culture becomes the root of unhappiness.
C. Judging good or bad is important for our world.
D. Accepting can make our life happier and better.
D
Drive through any suburb in the U.S. today, and it’s hard to miss the recycling bins that have become companions to America’s trash cans. Recycling has become common, as people recognize the need to care for the environment. Yet most people’s recycling consciousness extends only as far as paper, bottle, and cans. People seldom find themselves facing the growing problem of e-waste.
E-waste rapidly increases as the techno-fashionable frequently upgrade to the most advanced devices, and the majority of them end up in landfills. Some people who track such wastes say that users throw away nearly 2 million tons of TVs, VCRs, computers, cell phones, and other electronics every year. Unless we can find a safe replacement, this e-waste may get into the ground and poison the water with dangerous toxins(毒素), such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. Burning the waste also dangerously contaminates the air.
However, e-waste often contains reusable silver, gold, and other electrical materials. Recycling these materials reduces environmental problems by reducing both landfill waste and the need to look for such metals, which can destroy ecosystems.
A growing number of states have adopted laws to ban dumping e-waste. Still, less than a quarter of this waste will reach lawful recycling programs. Some companies advertising safe disposal(处理) in fact merely ship the waste to some developing countries, where it still ends up in landfills. These organizations prevent progress by unsafely disposing of waste in an out-of-sight, out-of-mind location.
However, the small but growing number of cities and corporations that do handle e-waste responsibly represents progress toward making the world a cleaner, better place for us all.
32. What can we infer from the first paragraph
A. E-waste cannot be put into trash cans in the U.S.
B. Most Americans have realized the dangers of e-waste.
C. Many Americans now have access to recycling bins.
D. Most of America’s trash cans are made of recycled material.
33. Which can best replace the underlined word “contaminates” in Paragraph 2
A. Pollutes. B. Heats. C. Absorbs. D. Reduces.
34. Which statement is right according to the article
A. The e-waste buried in the landfills won’t destroy ecosystem.
B. More and more states have banned dumping e-waste by making laws.
C. Much e-waste has been handled properly.
D. Some developing countries welcome e-waste.
35. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To tell us how to recycle e-waste.
B. To talk about the future of e-waste.
C. To encourage us to deal with e-waste properly.
D. To discuss if it’s necessary to recycle e-waste.

Preparing for exams Give yourself the best chance with these study tips, and try not to let the stress get to you! Remember: you’ve got this.
Give yourself enough time to study. 36 While some students do seem to succeed depending on last minute hard work, it’s widely accepted that this is not the best way. To help sort out your time management, set up a timetable for your study and organize it accordingly.
Use flow charts and diagrams. 37 At the start of a topic, challenge yourself to write down everything you already know about a topic—and then highlight where the gaps lie. Closer to the exam, simplify your revision notes into one-page diagrams, which can help you to quickly recall everything you need during the exam.
Explain your answers to others. Take advantage of your parents and little brothers and sisters around exam time. Explain an answer to a question to them. 38
39 You may think it’s best to study for as many hours as possible. However, this can turn out to be the opposite. Studies have shown that for long-term memory of knowledge, taking regular breaks really helps.
Plan your exam day. 40 Don’t leave it to the day before to suddenly realize you don’t know the way, or what you’re supposed to bring. Check all the rules and requirements, and plan your route and journey time. If possible, do a test run of the trip. If not, write down clear directions.
A. Take regular breaks.
B. Think about what works for you.
C. Don’t leave it until the last minute.
D. Avoid developing any study routine.
E. Visual aids can be really helpful when revising.
F. Get everything ready well in advance of the exam.
G. That will help you to get it clear in your head.

In a quiet little village surrounded by rolling hills, Lucy and her brother Max were walking to the family's strawberry fields to pick some strawberries when they came across an injured baby owl (猫头鹰). The tiny owl was lying on the ground, with one of its wings badly hurt and its big, brown eyes looking helplessly at the teens. Lucy and Max were animal lovers and they knew they had to do something to help the poor, little creature.
"We have to save this baby owl. Max," Lucy said as she knelt down beside the bird.
Max nodded. “I agree. But where can we take it ”
Lucy thought for a moment and then remembered a wildlife rehabilitation center(野生动物康复中心)located a few miles away. They quickly placed the baby owl in the small box they had planned to put strawberries in. Max took off his shirt to cover the box to keep the bird warm. They carefully placed the box in their backpack and headed out to the center.
The journey was not without its challenges. The skies suddenly darkened and the rain began to pour down, wetting Lucy and Max completely in seconds. But they were determined to save the baby owl, and so they trudged on(步履艰难地走), searching for shelter from the rain. They finally found a big tree to hide under and huddled(蜷缩)together, trying to keep the box dry:
As the rain continued to fall, Lucy and Max looked at the baby owl in the box. It was so small and weak. They felt a sense of determination and protectiveness towards the little bird. They knew that they had to save it, no matter what.
Gradually, the rain got weaker and Lucy and Max continued their journey. They walked along a winding path, which was wet and slippery. They had to use some tree branches as walking sticks to provide them with extra support and to ensure their stability.

作文一
One possible version:
Boys and girls,
I'm glad to have the chance to make a speech here.
Reading has the power to transform our life. It enhances our mental growth and enables us to keep up with the ever-changing world. Personally, I enjoy reading novels. I encourage anyone who has little interest in reading to start with the life stories of scientists, which can provide insights into their struggles and achievements, allowing you to learn how to handle difficult situations.,
In conclusion, reading is a means to a better life. So, let's make reading a regular part of our life. Thank you.
作文二
One possible version:
Lucy and Max finally approached the wildlife rehabilitation center, wet and dirty. They were greeted by a kind, elderly lady who was the head of the center. She immediately took the baby owl from their hands and examined its wing. The lady told them that the owl had a broken bone and would need to stay at the center for a few weeks to receive proper care and treatment. The two teens were praised by the center staff for their love and care for wild animals.
The weeks passed quickly, and one day Lucy and Max received a call from the head of the rehabilitation center They were told that the baby owl had fully recovered. It was now time for the little bird to be released back into the wild. They were invited to witness the wonderful scene. Lucy and Max were overjoyed to see the owl fly away, soaring high into the sky. They watched in awe as the bird disappeared into the distance, free once again. From that day forward, Lucy and Max learned that with a little bit of love and hard work, anything is possible. They also learned that even the smallest act of kindness can have a big impact.

M: Oh, I've been reading some online reviews. I want to buy a digital camera, but I'm still not sure which one to get.
W: That's the problem with buying one from the Internet. You can't try something out before you buy it. Perhaps you should go to a store.
M: It's a shame that the local shop has such a small range of cameras. There's the mall, I suppose.
W: Oh, no, I wouldn't go there at this time of year. It'll be very crowded. The shop down the road is a lot better now than it used to be. There are new owners. You should give it a try.
M: Okay. Thanks for your advice.
(Text 8)
W: Now, breathe in and out. Good. I'm going to take your temperature. OK, that seems normal. Now lie down, please. If I push here, does it hurt
M: Ow! A little bit. Do you think it's my heart
W: Your heart Why would it be your heart You're sixteen years old.
M: My mum says I eat the wrong things and I eat too quickly. She thinks I'll have a heart attack.
W: I see. Well, your heart is fine. I think you've got indigestion. But your mother's right — you need to eat more slowly and you should drink more water. I'm going to give you some medicine. And you should come back for a check next week.
M: Aren't you going to do a blood test
W: No, I don't think that's necessary.
M: Oh good, thank you.
(Text 9)
M: Hi, you must be Sarah. I can tell from your picture. I'm Michael. Finally we meet! So we're going to be classmates this semester!
W: Yes, I recognize you from your photo, too! I'm so glad to meet you in person. I see from your T-shirt that you like baseball. I'm a big fan, too!
M: Well, the T-shirt was a present from my brother, who's a baseball player. Look at the back — it has a photo of all the players on his team. They won the city championship this summer.
W: That's great. I love to watch baseball. What about you Do you play a sport
M: Yes, I play tennis. What else do you like to do
W: Well, what I like to do best is dance. I'm studying classical ballet, but I also like to dance to pop music.
M: Cool. Do you want to check out the local clubs this weekend
W: Oh, yeah. And the restaurants, too. Speaking of that, I'm hungry!
M: Me too. How about trying the place up the street I'd like to get a good hamburger.
W: Let's go!
(Text 10)
Hi, everyone! My name's Lily and I'm a swimmer. I'm talking to you today because I want to encourage you to take up swimming. It's a great sport. It isn't expensive to do and it keeps you healthy. I learnt to swim when I was about five. I didn't learn it at the local leisure centre, but in my uncle's pool. When I started primary school, I joined a swimming club and I went swimming twice a week. I had a lovely trainer called Anna. She encouraged me to enter competitions and I did quite well. Nearly every Saturday a group of us from the swimming club went to other towns to have competitions. That was fun. After I'd won quite a lot of competitions, I moved into the advanced class at the club and I had a trainer who was once an Olympic winner! He wanted me to receive training every day after school for an hour and a half. My parents didn't agree because I needed to spare some time for my school work. But they let me go three days a week. I love swimming and I would really recommend it to everyone.
