near Marsaxlokk at the tip of Delimara Point in the southwest of Malta. The sea at St. Peter’s Pool

Years ago my family and I stayed in a place famous for its tropical beauty. We walked our dog
twice a day, watered the dozens of potted plants, and roamed around, enjoying the break from our
usual routines.
One morning, as we packed up for a day at the beach, a voice told me to do a final sweep through
the house before leaving. Thankfully I listened to it. In my godson’s room I saw a thin curl of
smoke rising from his bed. An old clip-on lamp was bent over the mattress, and the hot bulb and
metal shade were burning a hole in it. I felt sick. Had we left without seeing the lamp, the house
could have burned down. It was an old wooden structure with no watering system; it probably

didn’t even have a smoke alarm.
We went on with our planned day at the beach. Every so often the close call would surge into my
mind, and my heart would race. I imagined having to contact the owners to tell them their home,
filled with family photos, art, and books, had been destroyed. “Thank God,” I whispered to myself.
We finished our stay, leaving a few hours before the owners returned. When I spoke to them on the
phone, I offered to buy them a new mattress and recommended they replace the lamp.
A few weeks later I received a note from the wife, telling me her husband had died from an
infection he’d gotten while hiking on their trip. At first they’d thought it was no big deal, but six
days after their return home, he was dead! It occurred to me then that if we had burned their house
down, they would have come home early — perhaps before that hike. They would have been angry
and sad, and I would have been filled with guilt. All my life I would have thought, Oh my God, I
ruined their lives!
We never know, in the midst of our misfortune, what other, far worse disaster we might have
avoided.
24. What is implied about the house's safety measures
A. The house lacked basic safety features.
B. The safety measures were beyond repair.
C. The house had a advanced watering system.
D. The house was well-equipped with safety measures.

A. Because the house was destroyed.
B. Because they had to cut their trip short.
D. Because they didn’t inform the owners immediately.
C. Because of the potential consequences of their carelessness.
26. How might have happened if the they hadn't discovered the potential danger
A. The owners might have returned home earlier.
B. The house would have been damaged by flooding.
C. The owners would have been pleasantly surprised.
D. They would have enjoyed their trip without any incidents..
27. What conclusion does the author reach towards the end of the story
A. The necessity of always being prepared.

In the movie "The Wrong Trousers," a pair of futuristic trousers lets people walk on walls and
ceilings. Inspired by the movie, researchers in England created “The Right Trousers," a set of
trousers embedded (嵌入) with electrical pumps to force air into tiny tubes (软管) that expand and
can help elderly or disabled people with issues like getting up or improving blood flow. Now,
material scientists, computer programmers and fabric designers are working to advance robotic
clothing.
In June, researchers in Australia created robotic fibers, which can make fabric move
automatically. Last year, scientists at MIT built fiber batteries that could be embedded into clothes
and power robotic clothing. In recent years,Google partnered with brands like Levi's and Adidas to
put sensors in jackets, backpacks and shoes, letting users access their phones instantly. Researchers
said they could soon unlock an era where clothing will act more like a computer, sensing how your
body feels and telling your clothes how to help.
At the University of New South Wales in Australia, researchers are creating fabrics that can
shape-shift. Thanh Nho Do, a senior lecturer at the school, said his team has created tiny tubes that
can weave into sheets of fabric. These tubes can make fabric take various preprogrammed shapes.
But challenges still remain for Do's team, notably around making these robotic tubes smaller so
they can weave easily with other fabrics.
Rebecca Kramer-Bottiglio from Yale University agreed that many challenges remain before smart
clothing“reaches their full potential." It will be challenging to make these clothes, equipped with
fibers and technology, strong enough to go through multiple cycles in the laundry(衣店), she said.
Despite that, she says researchers will figure out a way forward. "Recent breakthroughs," she said,
"point toward a not-so-distant future where smart clothing will be a part of our everyday life."
28. What did scientists at MIT do last year
A. They put sensors in clothes.
B. They created movable robotic fibers.
C. They made batteries for robotic clothing.

D. They released smart clothing connected to cellphones.
29. What is the main challenge faced by Do’s team
A.Ensuring the quality of the fabric. B.Finding suitable materials for the fabric.
C. Programming the tubes to change shapes. D. Adjusting tubes to weave with other fabrics.
30. What can be inferred according to Rebecca’s opinion
A.It will never overcome laundry-related challenges.
B. It will not be a part of everyday life anytime soon.
C.Challenges in making it strong may delay its wide use now.
D.Researchers are close to solving all challenges related to it.
31. Which could be the best title for this passage
A. The evolution of smart trousers B. The Future of Laundry Innovations
C. Smart fabric may shape future wardrobe D. Smart clothing’s impact on everyday life

Going to the Basque Country of Spain, linguistically (就语言角度来看),a Briton may feel he is
entering not just another country but perhaps another continent. Familiar world languages - Spanish
and French - suddenly give way to Basque, with its strange-looking words of tongue-twisting (绕口
的 ) length. Basque is unrelated to the Indo-European family that includes almost all European
languages.
Its survival has not been assured. The rule of Francisco Franco from 1939 to 1975 centralised the
state and he insisted that citizens speak Spanish. Public use of Basque was forbidden. When Franco
died, the Basque-speaking population was mostly old and rural. For a language, this usually means
extinction.
Since the 1980s the number of speakers has grown by almost 350,000, out of a regional
population of 2.1 million. In 2017 two-thirds of pupils were studying in schools where Basque was
the language of instruction, up from around 14% in 1984; 87% of 10- to 14-year-olds are estimated
to know the language. This is why, in the most recent big survey, the Basque-speaking population
(41%) almost matched the non-Basque-speakers (44%). The other15% are said to understand
Basque but struggle to speak it.
But there is another side to the story. In the Basque Country, just 376,000people have the
language as their first, passed down to them in the home.Basque is weakest in the three provincial

capitals, where the population is dominated by people from Spanish-speaking homes. Even as the
knowledge and influence of the language are growing, actual usage outside schools still seems to be
reducing. A similar story could be told of Irish, Welsh, and Maori.
What would it take to get people to live with these languages, as opposed to merely acquiring
them Some Basques say sadly that in a mixed group in which just one person is uncomfortable in
Basque, the rest quickly switch to Spanish. They say that in Catalonia, a similar group is more
likely to insist on continuing in Catalan, which, for this and unrelated historical reasons, is far more
widely spoken in its territory than is Basque.
32. What causes a Briton to feel different when entering the Basque Country of Spain
A. Basques tend to have a large vocabulary.
B. Spanish is much more widely used than French.
C. Basques speak much faster than other Europeans.
D. Basque differs significantly from other European languages.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The factor behind Basque's decline. B. The achievements of Francisco Franco.
C. The links between Basque and Spanish. D. The history and development of Basque.
34. What has helped increase Basque speakers since the 1980s
A. Economic development. B. Population growth.
C. School education. D. Cultural awareness.
35. What challenge is Basque facing now
A. It leads to discomfort in Basque. B. It will soon be replaced by Catalan.
C. It is decreasingly used in daily life. D. It confuses many Spanish speakers.

At lunchtime, Grandma called out,“Sammy,it's lunchtime!”Getting a little disappointed, he
headed back for the lunch. While walking back,Sammy noticed his grandma's pet. It was a
cute, little duck. Out of excitement he took his slingshot and aimed at the duck. This time, his shot
hit the target and it hit the poor duck on its head and killed it. He was shocked and frightened at the
same time.
In the extreme fear, he hid the dead duck in the pile of woods. Marie, his younger sister, had seen
it all from the window but she decided not to confront him.
The next day,Grandma said“, Marie, let's wash the dishes.”Hearing this, Marie immediately said,
“But Grandma, Sammy told me he wanted to help you do the household chores.”As soon as she
said this, she turned to Sammy and whispered“, Remember the duck ”Sammy got anxious, knowing
that his sister knew his secret about the duck. If he did not obey her, she would tell their
grandparents about it. So without uttering a single word, he did the dishes.
Later, in the evening, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go for fishing. On hearing this,
Grandma said,“I am sorry but I need Marie to stay with me and help make a supper.”Marie turned
to Grandma and said,“Well, that's all right. Sammy told me he wanted to help you.”She again
whispered to Sammy,“Remember the duck ” Hearing this, Sammy couldn't say a word, just
standing there angrily. So Marie went with her grandfather for fishing and poor Sammy had to stay
with his grandma.

One possible version:
Dear Mr.Li
As one of your students who often find themselves in a dilemma in learning English, I’m writing to seek
help.
At present, what confuses me most is that though I have spent enormous amount of time in English, so far all
my efforts have ended up in failure, making me feel awfully discouraged. Furthermore, I tend to be absent-minded
in class and never really get involved in learning because I really did a bad job in previous exams, especially in
reading and writing. Would you please slow down a bit while giving lessons and give us some advice in
improving our competence to take exams. Meanwhile, I need your guidance, for example, in how to speak English
fluently and your timely encouragement, which may boost my confidence again.
I really appreciate all the help you offer to me and I’m in firm belief that my efforts will pay off.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

读后续写:
After Marie took advantage of Sammy several times, he finally could not stand it any longer. He
came to Grandma and admitted that he had killed the duck. Grandma knelt down smiling, gave him
a hug and said, “My dear child, I know.I was standing right near the window when it all happened.
But because I love you, I forgave you. I was wondering how long you would let Marie take
advantage of you and how long you would admit your mistake.” Sammy apologized to his grandma
and hugged her once again.
Later that day, Marie went back from fishing with her grandfather. Grandma called Marie to
come to her and disclosed he whole truth, and meantime blamed her for taking advantage of her
brother.Marie also felt ashamed and regretful, so she said sorry to Grandma and her brother,
promising not to do so again. She would help with the chores at home and play with Sammy.
Therefore, Sammy and Marie had wonderful summer holidays and both of them learned a lot from
this trip. So it is important to admit your mistake, apologize and seek others’ forgiveness.

Dinosaurs are often considered as giant creatures, but new research adds to evidence that they
started out small. The evidence comes from the remains of a creature found on Madagascar that
lived some 237 million years ago and stood just 10 cm tall. It may also help reveal origins of flying
creatures that ruled the skies at the time of the dinosaurs. Christian Kammerer from the North
Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences said that there’s a general idea of dinosaurs as being giants,
but this new animal is surprisingly small.
The creature that was found, named Kongonaphon kely, was discovered in 1998 in
Madagascar by a team of scientists from the American Museum of Natural History. (18) Its
origins, that is, early dinosaurs, however, are poorly known, as few early creatures of their
type have been found. (19) The shape of the Kongonaphon kely’s teeth suggests it ate insects
rather than leaves or grass. (20) A shift to this kind of diet, which is associated with small body
size, may have helped early creatures survive by being different from their mostly meat-eating
relatives.
