Levels of Management
Management is about getting work done through others. There are 3 levels of management.
First, top-level management. It consists of the board of directors, managing director, chief executive officer (CEO), chief operating officer (COO), chief information officer (CIO) and chief financial officer (CFO). They are responsible for the overall direction and the organization through planning and coordinating.

Second, middle-level management. General managers, branch managers and department managers are known as the middle-level managers. Their main role is the directional and managerial function of an organization. They are the implementers of a company’s strategy who figure out the HOW to do the WHAT.
Third, operative-level management including supervisor, office manager and first-line manager, their primary responsibility is to distribute jobs and responsibilities to a variety or workers, and manage the performance of entry-level employees.

Directions: Watch a video which introduces the four main functions of management and what questions the managers ask for each function, and fill in the table.
What do managers really do
Planning
What do we want to accomplish
Organizing
What resources are needed to get the job done
Leading
How will we motivate and inspire our employees
Controlling
How are we performing against our goals
What do managers really do
What does a manager really do I’m sure you’ve asked that question before.
Scholars and even managers themselves have been debating that question for more than a century. Henri Fayol, CEO of a large steel company in the 1900s and one of the founders of the fields of management, argued that the success of a company depends more on the administrative abilities of its leaders than on technical abilities. More than 100 years later, Google came to the same conclusion after a 2 year study. It found that the most important trait of a manager to have is a clear vision and strategy for the team.

Most textbooks today recommend that managers do this by referring to the four functions of management, planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Managers use these four functions, whether they are the CEOs of large companies, department managers at retail stores, or managers of small restaurants. Studies indicate that managers who perform these management functions are more successful, more likely to receive promotions and more likely to generate profits for their companies.
Let’s look at each of the four functions of management.
Planning is the management function concerned with defining performance goals and plan to attain them. And the planning function, um... managers ask the question: what do we want to accomplish

Organizing involves assigning tasks, grouping tasks into department, and allocating resources. In other words, managers ask what resources are needed to get the job done.
Leading means using influence to motivate employees to achieve the organization’s goal. Managers ask, how will we motivate and inspire our employees.
Controlling is concerned with monitoring employees’ activities, keeping the organization on the track to meet its goals and making adjustments as necessary. Managers ask, how should we do to achieve our goals
The evidence is clear. Managers serve their companies when they plan, organize, lead and control.

How to be a Better Manager
— Understanding and Applying the Four Dimensions of Emotional Intelligence
Effective managers understand the context and culture in leadership situations. What helps these managers succeed It is simple; they understand EQ, namely, the competencies in each dimension of emotional intelligence.

Those four dimensions are: a high self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, and good social skills. All of these competencies are important, and they lead to great connections with people. They lead to stronger and more effective managerial performance. EQ is a very important component for excelling as a supervisor.
The job of the manager is to find a way to turn a team member’s skills and talent into a
higher level of performance. This idea doesn’t suggest manipulation at all. Instead, it is about
maximizing human potential. It is as much art as it is science.
