The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter,I couldn’t wait to take her to school.I,as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slowed language development.
As I accompanied her into the car,I felt desperate.Nothing was right with our world. She’d been born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession. My job and my house became victims(牺牲品).Then this happened. My child’s language delay(语言发育迟缓) was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her.I felt like we both needed to be rescued.
I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with my little girl as when I left.Walking slowly towards the school’s playground gate,I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me.“You should have seen her today!” His breathy words were supported by excitement.I didn’t interrupt.“See that climber.” He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall.I nodded.“Well, every day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top.” He took a breath.“And today she did it!”
He expressed his joy just as he’d witnessed her conquering Mount Qomolangma!“She cheered and celebrated!I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me.My daughter had conquered her mountain.
As she ran towards me,I recognized something I hadn’t before.I saw her perseverance(毅力).I saw her strength.I saw a hero.

Making Music Visible
On a recent afternoon in a brightly lit studio in Brooklyn,Tom and David were filming a music video. They were recording a different version of their favorite song, but the voices that filled the room were those of the two original singers, who made the song a hit.And yet the two men were also singing—with their hands.
Tom is a deaf actor and dancer;David is a hearing dancer and choreographer who is,thanks to seven deaf family members,a native speaker of sign language.Their version is part of a 10-song series of sign language covers of works.
Around the world, music connects together communities and promotes a sense of belonging. But as sign language music videos become an online phenomenon, the richness of sign language has gotten a broader stage.
“Music is many different things to different people.” Alice,a deaf actress, said in an interview, using an interpreter.“I realize,” she added,“that when you do hear, not hearing may seem to separate us.But what is your relationship to music,to dance,to beauty What do you see that we may learn from These are conversations people need to get accustomed to having.”
A good sign language performance thinks highly of the combination of the elements of sign language—hand shape, movement and facial expression—with those of spoken language, allowing a skilled sign language speaker to engage in the kind of sound painting that composers use to enrich a text.“The hands have their own emotions,” Tom said.“They have their own minds.”
Deaf singers prepare for their performances by experiencing a song through any means available to them. Many people speak about their highly sensitivity to the vibrations of sound, which they experience through their body.As a dancer trained in ballet,Tom said he was particularly conscious of the vibrations of a piano as transmitted through a wooden floor.

As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find.If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.
Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for humans, but a new study shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely important for human well-being.
The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-goers,asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding(编码)experiences into different categories. For example, one participant’s experience of “We sat and listened to the waves at the beach for a while” was assigned the categories “sitting at beach” and “listening to waves.”
Across the 320 submissions,a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge of water, and following an established trail.
Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park.Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break.
“We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen,we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn,a senior author of the study.
32.What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text
A.Pocket parks are now popular. B.Wild nature is hard to find in cities.
C.Many cities are overpopulated. D.People enjoy living close to nature.
33.Why did the researchers code participant submissions into categories
A.To compare different types of park-goers.
B.To explain why the park attracts tourists.
C.To analyze the main features of the park.
D.To find patterns in the visitors’ summaries.
34.What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 5
A.Walking is the best way to gain access to nature.
B.Young people are too busy to interact with nature.
C.The same nature experience takes different forms.
D.The nature language enhances work performance.
35.What should be done before we can interact with nature according to Kahn
A.Language study.
B.Environmental conservation.
C.Public education.
D.Intercultural communication.

ANIMAL BODY LANGUAGE
Human beings are not the only ones who communicate. 36 Here is a quick look at how some of our animal friends send messages to us and to each other.
37 When a dog is happy, its ears will stand up and its eyes will be wide open. The dog will start barking, moving its tail and running around in circles or jumping up and down to show you that it wants to play.A dog that is afraid will lay on its back and close its eyes. The dog may show its teeth and lower its body so that it is close to the ground. The dog may also shake, and it will put its tail between its legs. When a dog is angry, its main body language is showing its teeth and growling(低声叫).The dog will try making itself look as big as possible. The tail will stand straight out from the body.
Elephants also use noises and body language to express themselves. An elephant’s sense of smell is highly developed. An elephant can smell how another elephant is feeling and even tell if it is sick. The elephant’s nose,or trunk,is also used to make noises and to welcome other elephants.Different noises have a variety of meanings. They can mean “I am hungry”,“I am angry”,or “Good to see you!” 38 If an elephant spreads its ears,it means “Watch out!”To show friendship, elephants will touch each other with their trunks and stand close to each other, putting their heads together.
Dolphins are social animals. 39 An angry dolphin will sometimes hit its tail on the surface of the water. The movement and noise let other dolphins know that something is wrong. If a dolphin wants to send a message over a long distance,or if it wants to show how strong it is,it will jump high out of the water and land on its side, making a loud noise.A dolphin’s favorite activity is leaping into the air while playing with its friends. When dolphins are tired and need to rest, they will swim in small groups close to the surface. 40
A.Dogs are human’s loyal friends.
B.If you see them doing this, you should not disturb them.
C.An elephant’s body language includes ear signals and gestures.
D.They live in groups and love showing each other their feelings.
E.Dogs use sounds, body movements, and their tails to communicate.
F.If an elephant senses its partner is falling sick,it will also make a noise.
G.Animals use body language to tell each other how they feel and what they think.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I lived in Portland,Oregon,I taught English as a Second Language at a local community college.I had adult students in my class from Vietnam,Mexico,Russia and many other countries.Although they came from many lands, fighting for a better life, they had one thing in common:a desperate yearning(渴望) to learn English well.
Many of the students worked in a factory for twelve hours throughout the night and hurriedly took a bus in the morning straight to our 8:00 a.m.class.They attended my class on time whatever the weather. And they waited until after class to go home and sleep.Sometimes I would see them struggling to keep their eyes open in the beginning. However, their active participation in class drove away their physical tiredness as well as livened up the atmosphere. Some students even raised a bunch of questions by gesture after class. They were always there working hard, earnest and eager to learn.
Despite their lack of sleep and long hours at work, the level of attendance and attentiveness in class was always excellent. No one called in sick.No one was absent-minded.Some of the students had as many as three jobs and took the bus everywhere they went because they couldn’t afford cars.
To teach the course,I needed to use a lot of pictures and hand gestures, since I didn’t know all their respective languages. One of the things I taught was a simple dialogue called “Shopping for a New Coat”.They enjoyed standing up and acting out the gestures that accompanied the text of the story.
Sometimes I wondered if I was really teaching my students in the best way possible. But I gave my all to this class, and they gave their all to me.If nothing else, they would always remember what to say if they ever went “shopping for a new coat”.Soon, the language course came to an end.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
On the last day of class, they threw a wonderful party that was filled with good food and laughter.

The team used a piece of underwater equipment called a ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) to collect information. The ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that sent live film back to the boat. The ROV was great fun.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first,I was quite frightened—mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water,I wasn’t afraid anymore. It was amazing to see the colourful fish swimming around.
I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. The team were happy to explain what they knew about the sea.It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in life. The experience will definitely encourage me to work harder to become a scientist.

第一节
Dear Allen,
It’s great to learn that you are coming to study at Peking University. You’ve asked me for advice on which major to choose and here are my suggestions.
As we all know, what you learn in university is preparation for your future career. Therefore,it would be better to choose Chinese Language and Literature as your major. In that case, not only will you be completely immersed in China’s profound culture but also master enough professional knowledge for your future job.I can’t wait to meet you and it’s my pleasure to be your tour guide.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节

I lifted from the box a beautiful,new,full-length coat.“We went shopping for a new coat!” they all exclaimed in wonderfully perfect English. They were people who lived in small apartments, sent money back to families in their home countries and could barely make ends meet.I was simply doing my job, teaching English, and their gratitude was beyond the bounds of what I ever could possibly have expected.I wore the coat they gave me with pride and gratitude;it’s my favorite.Every time I wear the coat,I think fondly of them—all of them and their desire and struggle to start a new life in America.
