Let’s Build a Green City Together
As a citizen(市民), it’s our duty to help build a green city. We can avoid the traffic jams and reduce the air pollution by riding bikes or walking. We mustn’t throw rubbish or spit anywhere. In this way, we can keep our city clean and tidy so that we can live a comfortable life. And we’d better plant more trees to protect the environment and make our city beautiful.
In my daily life, I can pick up rubbish and put it into the dustbin wherever I go. I can also
save the energy by turning off the lights when leaving the room.
In a word, everyone can play a part in building our city.

China has changed so fast that it is hard to know when the changes started. I came to China in 1994 and have been here ever since, so I have seen the changes in China.
Take one city, Shenzhen for example. When I first saw this city, it was filled with beggars (乞丐) and lots of low buildings. Many of the buildings had shacks (窝棚) on top of them. There were no birds and other little wildlife. It was like entering a different planet.
But in the past 20 years, Shenzhen has been a modern city with huge high buildings, stock (股票) exchanges and a very large shipping industry.
Now the city is very green, so the wildlife has returned. Finally I can hear the birds sing, and this brings hope of a better city in the future.
As China is developing more and more rapidly in recent years, people there live more happily than before. The government is leading the country in the best direction and it is admirable.
China has changed for the better and I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve spent there. I think the country will become more beautiful in the future.

There are many wetlands in China and some of them have become the world’s important wetlands. The Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands are among them. They are in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. They are home for many different kinds of animals and birds. The world’s largest Milu Deer Nature Reserve (麇鹿自然保护区) is in them. More than seven hundred milu deer live freely there. There are not many red-crowned cranes (丹顶鹤) in the world, but every winter you can see some in the Red-crowned Cranes Nature Reserve in the Yellow Sea Wetlands.
The temperature in the wetlands is usually not too high or too low. There is a lot of rain and sunshine, too. They are really good places for wildlife. Offering food and home for some special kinds of animals and birds is not the only reason why we need to protect wetlands. Wetlands are also important for humans because they prevent flood and help protect fresh water. But some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means there will be less and less space for wildlife.
Luckily, more and more people are beginning to realize the importance of wetlands. World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2nd. The celebration is a call for action. On that day, people around the world take part in many wetlands activities. People take trips to the local wetlands. There are talks about how important the wetlands are. The world’s oceans are full of life, from tiny (极小的) lives to whales. But we may be killing the oceans, or at least large parts of them. Human activity on land is creating “dead zones” (致死区域) in coastal waters around the world.
Over the past forty years, these dead zones have appeared in almost 150 places, mostly in Europe and the east coast (海岸) of the United States. Some are less than one square mile, and some are large. The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is 7,000 square miles, or about the size of New Jersey.
Our oceans are full of animals and plant lives. Unlike the rest of the ocean, no animals live in dead zones. The reason is that the water below the surface has no oxygen in it. Without oxygen, fish or other animals cannot live.
Chemical fertilizer (化肥) used on farms and grasslands is the main reason. Pollution from industries adds to the problem. Because of soil erosion (水土流失), rainwater brings fertilizer and other chemicals into a river. Then, the river flows (流) into the ocean, and all those chemicals are gathered in one place. Then ocean dead zones appear at the mouths of rivers.
Governments around the world have been trying to come up with ways to prevent the spread of these oxygen-free areas. One method is to plant trees and grasslands by the rivers. These plants will absorb the fertilizer before it reaches the ocean. However, to solve this problem, there is a long way to go.
