London is a huge city. In its northern part sits a small garden cared for by Albert. Born in Italy, Albert grew up watching his grandfather plant tomatoes and learning from his grandfather. When he first moved to London, his gardening place was limited, so he had to choose to grow small plants outside his windows.
That all changed a year ago when he moved to a house with an outdoor space. Even though it was small, he was thankful for this area and set to work, building a greenhouse where he planted beans, onions, chilies (辣椒) and so on. Using recycled plastic bottles as planters, Albert hung them on a wall, and everything else was grown in pots. Believe it or not, he was able to fit all of these in a shared balcony (阳台) that was only 16 by 26 feet.
Albert’s first crop this summer included 30 kinds of vegetables. He got over 75 pounds of tomatoes from just 6 plants and his 17 kinds of chilies produced 22 pounds of hot peppers. He has not been to the vegetable market since last March! He even started to give the vegetables away to friends and neighbors, even putting up a sign outside his house asking people to take them for free.
At present, his rooms seem to be filled with as many green plants as he has in the backyard! Many city gardeners became very interested in what he was doing. So he started a web page called Spicy Corner, where he shared his gardening tips. He got many city followers and hoped his viewers would also create small green gardens in the city. “City backyards and green areas help make the air cleaner and healthier for people. Gardening is really healthy, improves the joy of life, and helps green the planet,” Albert said.
19. What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The life of his family. B. The condition of his gardening.
C. The kinds of his vegetables. D. The experience of his growing up.
20. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. Albert had a good harvest. B. Albert was proud of his crop.
C. Albert wanted to help local farmers. D. Albert was famous for his green food.
21. Why did Albert create Spicy Corner
A. To make people interested in his online products.
B. To ask people to share their gardening experience.
C. To teach people to plant more kinds of vegetables.
D. To encourage people to grow plants in the city home.
22. Which words best describe Albert according to the passage
A. Honest and patient. B. Humorous and clever.
C. Strict and hard-working. D. Creative and kind-hearted.

The company OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world. It is the latest type of AI chatbox. A chatbox is a computer program that uses AI (artificial intelligence) to simulate (模仿) conversations with users. Anyone can use ChatGPT for free now, so that the company can collect people’s ideas on how to improve the chatbot.
People have tested how ChatGPT works. Reporters found out that it was able to write articles with rightful opinions for newspapers. Teachers asked it to write answers to exam questions. ChatGPT could almost get full marks. Even programmers, people who write computer code, tried out ChatGPT. The chatbot is able to solve difficult coding problems and answer very quickly. It even wrote short poems to explain how the coding worked. In daily life, it helped a father come up with ideas of a birthday party for his son that includes the kid’s two favorites, rabbits and basketball.
What’s more, when people ask ChatGPT questions, it can find out mistakes. If it is asked what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2023, older AIs might give a story. But ChatGPT can recognize that Columbus reached America in the 1400s. The chatbox can also refuse to answer questions that are not proper. Ask it for advice on stealing a car, for example. It will say that stealing a car is a serious crime (犯罪) and can have bad results. Instead, it gives advice such as “taking the bus”.
ChatGPT might help people solve problems, but the AI is trained to use texts from the Internet. Often, the texts are used without being allowed by the writers of those texts. Some argue that technology doesn’t respect people’s work. Some argue that people will use the chatbot to copy others’ work and sell it as their own. Elon Musk set up OpenAI in 2015, but left it in 2017. In 2022, he bought Twitter and then he pointed out that OpenAI could use the Twitter database (数据库) for training in the past, but not anymore for now. This AI technology is bad for the planet too. Training ChatGPT might make more than 284 tons of CO2 and lead to climate change that will heat up the earth.
23. Why can ChatGPT be used for free now
A. Because it is able to teach machines. B. Because it needs to improve itself.
C. Because it helps students with exams. D. Because it writes poems about coding.
24. Which of the following is most probably a conversation with ChatGPT
A. Q: What happened after paper was invented in America
AI: Paper started to change how knowledge was spread.
B. Q: Show me how to use other people's bank card without being noticed.
AI: For your information, that is against the law.
C. Q: Is Li Bai, a poet in modern China, famous all over the world
AI: Yes, because his poems are fantastic.
D. Q: Find a gift for my mum. She likes classic music and cooking.
AI: Among all the gifts listed online, there’s no such gift.
25. What can we know from Paragraph 4
A. ChatGPT sells texts on the Internet to make money.
B. Training ChatGPT is good for the climate on the earth.
C. ChatGPT used texts after being allowed by the writers.
D. Musk stopped OpenAI from using the Twitter database.
26. What’s the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
D
Brie Fainblit in California does her homework by candle light whenever the power gets cut off. If there is no water supply, she fills empty bottles at school to wash her hair. She is used to not having what other people have. Mostly, the 19-year-old student doesn’t complain and just accepts it.
But she won’t do that for prom (毕业舞会). She wants to be Highland High School’s prom queen and turn heads. After all, every ordinary girl wishes the important moments in their lives to be well remembered.
Brie lives with her mother, who is left disabled by an accident, and her aunt, who works two part-time jobs to support them.
There is never enough money for new clothes. Usually, Brie finds what she can wear at the local Goodwill, a charity (慈善) organization that provides donations for people in need. But the prom dresses there are too big and too old.
So, back in September, with the big day waiting at a distance on the calendar, she decided to make a dress for herself. She got a plan when she saw a can tab (拉环) lying on the ground, shining in the sunlight—she would make her dress out of can tabs, for free.
For months, Brie’s aunt, Sylvia Davalos, has asked everyone at her jobs to help. Together with Brie and her friends, they have turned the dining room into a workshop.
But who knew that tabs came in so many colors, shapes and sizes, or that some have holes and some don’t Who knew that many would have sharp edges that would need to be smoothed out, or that it would take many months to get enough perfectly shaped silver tabs for one prom dress
Brie’s mother and aunt haven’t been able to buy her much. But they have tried to make up for it by stressing the importance of creativity. For her dress, using thick black thread (细线), Brie joins tabs together in row after perfect row.
The free dress is not finished, but there’s another price to pay: Brie and her mother both have Band-Aids on their fingers.
Other girls in Brie’s class will have gone to the mall to pick out their dresses. Some will ride in cars from their homes to the school, where a bus will take them all to the prom. Brie will have no nice car to ride in nor pocket money to spend. But she’ll be a proud Cinderella (灰姑娘) in can tabs, with magic that won’t disappear (消失) forever.
27. What does the underlined phrase “turn heads” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Open empty bottles. B. Complain about things.
C. Refuse to attend an event. D. Draw attention from others.
28. Why did Brie Fainblit decide to make her dress out of can tabs
A. Because she wasn’t satisfied with the prom dresses at local stores.
B. Because her mother and aunt always encouraged her to have a try.
C. Because it cost almost nothing and would make her special at the prom.
D. Because she wanted to prove her clothes-making skills and her creativity.
29. Which of the following can be inferred from the story
A. Brie leads an ordinary life just like other girls in her class.
B. Lots of time and efforts went into making Brie’s prom dress.
C. Brie redesigned an old prom dress from Goodwill with can tabs.
D. Brie’s mom used to work in a charity organization called Goodwill.

Questions about the “main idea” of a passage are popular on reading comprehension tests. Sometimes those questions are pretty difficult to answer. Many students are not completely sure they understand what the main idea really is. Finding the main idea of a passage is one of the most important reading skills to master. Try these tips to find the main idea of a passage.
32. _________________
Read the passage through completely, then try to identify the topic. Who or what is the paragraph about This part is just figuring out a topic like “cause of World War I”. Don’t worry about deciding what argument the passage is making about this topic.
33. _________________
After reading the passage, summarize it in your own words in one sentence. If you have just ten to twelve words to tell someone what the passage is about—what would you say
34. _________________
Authors often put the main idea in or near either the first or last sentence of the paragraph or article. Be careful: sometimes the author will use words like but, however, in contrast, etc. that show the second sentence is actually the main idea. If you see one of these words, that is a clue (线索) that the second sentence is the main idea.
35. _________________
If you read through a passage and you have no idea how to summarize it because there is so much information, start looking for repeated words, phrases, or related ideas. Sometimes an author does not state the main idea directly. This requires the reader to look closely at specific words or sentences that are used and repeated—to infer what the author is communicating.
A. Find details to support the argument B. Look for repetition (重复) of ideas C. Identify (确认) the topic D. Look at the first and last sentences of the passage E. How to find the main idea F. Summarize the passage

London is a huge city. In its northern part sits a small garden cared for by Albert. Born in
Italy, Albert grew up watching his grandfather plant tomatoes and learning from his grandfather.
When he first moved to London, his gardening place was limited, so he had to choose to grow
small plants outside his windows.
That all changed a year ago when he moved to a house with an outdoor space. Even though
it was small, he was thankful for this area and set to work, building a greenhouse where he planted
beans, onions, chilies (辣椒 ) and so on. Using recycled plastic bottles as planters, Albert hung
them on a wall, and everything else was grown in pots. Believe it or not, he was able to fit all of
these in a shared balcony (阳台) that was only 16 by 26 feet.
Albert’s first crop this summer included 30 kinds of vegetables. He got over 75 pounds of
tomatoes from just 6 plants and his 17 kinds of chilies produced 22 pounds of hot peppers. He has
not been to the vegetable market since last March! He even started to give the vegetables away to
friends and neighbors, even putting up a sign outside his house asking people to take them for
free.
At present, his rooms seem to be filled with as many green plants as he has in the backyard!
Many city gardeners became very interested in what he was doing. So he started a web page called
Spicy Corner, where he shared his gardening tips. He got many city followers and hoped his
viewers would also create small green gardens in the city. “City backyards and green areas help
make the air cleaner and healthier for people. Gardening is really healthy, improves the joy of life,
and helps green the planet,” Albert said.

chatbox is a computer program that uses AI (artificial intelligence) to simulate ( 模 仿 )
九年级英语试卷 第 3 页 共 8 页
conversations with users. Anyone can use ChatGPT for free now, so that the company can collect
people’s ideas on how to improve the chatbot.
People have tested how ChatGPT works. Reporters found out that it was able to write articles
with rightful opinions for newspapers. Teachers asked it to write answers to exam questions.
ChatGPT could almost get full marks. Even programmers, people who write computer code, tried
out ChatGPT. The chatbot is able to solve difficult coding problems and answer very quickly. It
even wrote short poems to explain how the coding worked. In daily life, it helped a father come up
with ideas of a birthday party for his son that includes the kid’s two favorites, rabbits and
basketball.
What’s more, when people ask ChatGPT questions, it can find out mistakes. If it is asked
what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2023, older AIs might give a story. But
ChatGPT can recognize that Columbus reached America in the 1400s. The chatbox can also refuse
to answer questions that are not proper. Ask it for advice on stealing a car, for example. It will say
that stealing a car is a serious crime (犯罪) and can have bad results. Instead, it gives advice such
as “taking the bus”.
ChatGPT might help people solve problems, but the AI is trained to use texts from the
Internet. Often, the texts are used without being allowed by the writers of those texts. Some argue
that technology doesn’t respect people’s work. Some argue that people will use the chatbot to copy
others’ work and sell it as their own. Elon Musk set up OpenAI in 2015, but left it in 2017. In
2022, he bought Twitter and then he pointed out that OpenAI could use the Twitter database (数据
库) for training in the past, but not anymore for now. This AI technology is bad for the planet too.
Training ChatGPT might make more than 284 tons of CO2 and lead to climate change that will
heat up the earth.
A. B. C. D.

Brie Fainblit in California does her homework by candle light whenever the power gets cut
off. If there is no water supply, she fills empty bottles at school to wash her hair. She is used to not
having what other people have. Mostly, the 19-year-old student doesn’t complain and just accepts
it.
But she won’t do that for prom (毕业舞会). She wants to be Highland High School’s prom
queen and turn heads. After all, every ordinary girl wishes the important moments in their lives to
be well remembered.
Brie lives with her mother, who is left disabled by an accident, and her aunt, who works two
part-time jobs to support them.
There is never enough money for new clothes. Usually, Brie finds what she can wear at the
local Goodwill, a charity (慈善) organization that provides donations for people in need. But the
prom dresses there are too big and too old.
So, back in September, with the big day waiting at a distance on the calendar, she decided to
make a dress for herself. She got a plan when she saw a can tab (拉环 ) lying on the ground,
shining in the sunlight—she would make her dress out of can tabs, for free.
For months, Brie’s aunt, Sylvia Davalos, has asked everyone at her jobs to help. Together
with Brie and her friends, they have turned the dining room into a workshop.
But who knew that tabs came in so many colors, shapes and sizes, or that some have holes
and some don’t Who knew that many would have sharp edges that would need to be smoothed
out, or that it would take many months to get enough perfectly shaped silver tabs for one prom
dress
Brie’s mother and aunt haven’t been able to buy her much. But they have tried to make up for
it by stressing the importance of creativity. For her dress, using thick black thread (细线 ), Brie
joins tabs together in row after perfect row.
The free dress is not finished, but there’s another price to pay: Brie and her mother both have
Band-Aids on their fingers.
Other girls in Brie’s class will have gone to the mall to pick out their dresses. Some will ride
in cars from their homes to the school, where a bus will take them all to the prom. Brie will have
no nice car to ride in nor pocket money to spend. But she’ll be a proud Cinderella (灰姑娘) in can
tabs, with magic that won’t disappear (消失) forever.

Many students are not completely sure
they understand what the main idea really is. Finding the main idea of a passage is one of the most
important reading skills to master. Try these tips to find the main idea of a passage.
32. _________________
Read the passage through completely, then try to identify the topic. Who or what is the
paragraph about This part is just figuring out a topic like “cause of World War I”. Don’t worry
about deciding what argument the passage is making about this topic.
33. _________________
After reading the passage, summarize it in your own words in one sentence. If you have just
ten to twelve words to tell someone what the passage is about—what would you say
34. _________________
Authors often put the main idea in or near either the first or last sentence of the paragraph or
article. Be careful: sometimes the author will use words like but, however, in contrast, etc. that
show the second sentence is actually the main idea. If you see one of these words, that is a clue
(线索) that the second sentence is the main idea.
35. _________________
If you read through a passage and you have no idea how to summarize it because there is so
much information, start looking for repeated words, phrases, or related ideas. Sometimes an author
does not state the main idea directly. This requires the reader to look closely at specific words or
sentences that are used and repeated—to infer what the author is communicating.
A. Find details to support the argument
B. Look for repetition (重复) of ideas
C. Identify (确认) the topic
D. Look at the first and last sentences of the passage
E. How to find the main idea
F. Summarize the passage

My first job was as a waiter. It was easy for me to remember the customers' orders, but it was
still hard work because I had to stand for long hours, and I even had to work on holidays. After
working there for five months, I left the restaurant and got a job in a bookstore. I really enjoy that
because I like books. I was very good at the job. And after ten months, I became the store manager.
I also got a three months’ training about business. I was a good manager. Well, I thought I was.
After several years, the bookstore closed because there wasn't enough business. Now I teach in a
business school. I love to give advice to those who just start their own business. The pay is
fantastic and the work is quite fun. But you know what Sometimes I miss being a waiter and just
having jokes with customers.
