In the summer between my first year and second year in college, I was invited to be an
instructor(辅导员) at a high school camp. On the first day, when we were dancing and playing
games, I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak. I
walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet some new
people. He quietly replied, “No, I really don’t want to do this. “I could understand that he was in a
new world but I knew it wouldn’t be right to force him, either. Actually, the boy didn’t need a close
talk but a friend.
At lunch the next day, I was leading camp songs when I saw the boy under the tree sitting
alone. I tried again with the same invitation, but he said no once again. That evening I was told the
boy’s name was Tommy. Then I asked the campers to pay special attention to the boy and spend
time with him when they could.
The days went by and the time came when we had to leave. We held a big, warm party to
celebrate the closing of the camp. All the campers shared their wonderful moments. To my surprise
I found the boy from under the tree dancing joyfully with two girls. I couldn’t believe it was the
same person.
In October of my second year, I received a phone call from Tommy’s mother. She told me that
Tommy was hit by a car and killed. I offered my deep sadness. The mother said “Tommy mentioned
you so many times. I want you to know that he went back to school and made new friends with
confidence. You made a difference for Tommy during his last months. “
At that moment, I realized how easy it was to give a bit of yourself every day. You may never
know how much each small action may mean to someone else. I hope that everyone can pay
attention to their own “boy under the tree”.
19. How many times did the writer invite the boy to join in the activities
A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Four times.
20. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Why Tommy died. B. Why Tommy refused the writer.
C. Tommy’s mother’s sadness. D. Tommy’s mother’s thanks to the writer.

②The boy went back to his own life with confidence.
③The boy refused to join in the activities.

Zhou Chuna,a normal 15-year-old girl, shared her experience of cosmetic surgery(整容手术)
on the Internet recently and caused a hot discussion. She said she started getting cosmetic surgery at
the age of 13. Ever since then she has spent about 4 million yuan on more than 100 surgeries.
Although Zhou’s story is rare, more and more young people in China are having cosmetic surgery.
It was reported that 19 percent of Chinese medical beauty customers in 2020 were aged 18 or under.
Many beauty clinics(诊所) say that being more beautiful gives people an advantage in society,
but the truth is that failed examples of cosmetic surgery are common to see. Once a teenage girl
named Zhang had double eyelid surgery, but after that she couldn’t open her eyes because of the
mistakes made by the doctor.
Moreover, a large number of beauty care centers actually open against the law. It is said that
China has about 13, 000 beauty clinics, with 15 percent offering surgeries which are not allowed by
law.
More worrying, there is heated competition among the medical beauty clinics to win more
teenage customers. Some businesses use catchphrases like “Only by becoming prettier can you be
more loved” to spread “appearance stress”. And many beauty clinics advertise directly to teenagers,
encouraging them to “make some changes and let your classmates be amazed by your beauty in the
new term”. Some beauty clinics mislead their teenage patients by advertising low costs. One
Internet user said she saw an advertisement for a 15-yuan treatment for pimples but the staff at the
beauty clinic gave her a year’s surgery plan which cost 8, 000.
Many experts have said it’s dangerous for teenagers to have cosmetic surgery. Teenagers are
more at risk to advertisement and social pressure, not to mention their level of physical maturity(成
熟). That’s why they are calling for stricter rules on the beauty clinics when it comes to the
treatment of teenagers.
23. Where may we read this passage
A. A cookbook. B. A traveling guide.
C. A science book. D. Newspaper.
24. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Beauty clinics. B. Classmates. C. Teenagers. D. Experts.
25. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
26. What’s the writer’s purpose by writing this passage
A. To call for stricter rules on beauty surgery on teenagers.
B. To point out the danger of the false advertising to teenagers.
4
{#{QQABAYaEggAAABBAABgCQQGICAMQkBEACAoGAEAEIAIBABNABAA=}#}
C. To ask the government to pass laws to stop the cosmetic surgery.
D. To remind parents to give more attention to the growth of teenagers.

Pet parrots that are allowed to make video calls to other birds show signs of
feeling less isolated, according to scientists.
The study, which involved giving the birds a computer that they could use to
make video calls, found that they began to engage in more social behaviors including
preening, singing and playing. The birds were given a choice of which “friend” to
call on a touchscreen computer and the study showed that the parrots that called other birds most
often were the most popular choices.
Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, of the University of Glasgow and a co-author of the study, said that
video calls had helped many people feel less isolated in the last few years. She added, “There are 20
million parrots living in people’s homes in the USA, and we wanted to explore whether those birds
might benefit(受益) from video calling too. If we gave them the chance to call other parrots, would
they choose to do so, and would the experience benefit the parrots and their caregivers ”
Their study of 18 pet parrots suggested that there were, indeed, benefits for the birds. In the
wild, many species of parrots live in large groups, but as pets they are kept alone or in a small group.
Living alone can cause birds to develop mental problems, which include rocking, walking back and
forth, or self-harming behaviors such as feather-plucking.
The parrots first learned to ring a bell and then touch a photo of another bird on the screen of a
computer to make a call to that bird, with the help of their owners. In total the birds made 147 calls
to each other during the study, while owners took detailed notes on the birds’ behavior and the
researchers later reviewed the video footage.
Jennifer Cunha of Northeastern University said that the parrots “seemed to know” that they
were communicating with other birds. “All the bird owners in the study said they valued the
experience, and would want to continue using the system with their parrots in the future,” she said.
“I was quite surprised at so many different behaviors,” said Hirskyj-Douglas. “Some would
sing, some would play around and go upside down, others would want to show another bird their
toys.”
27. The main purpose of the study is to find out .
A. if parrots can benefit from video calling B. if parrots can learn to make video calls
C. why parrots can develop mental problems D. why parrots can have so many benefit
28. What can we learn about the pet parrots
A. Most of them used to live in large groups. B. Their way to communicate is singing.
C. They can make video calls by themselves. D. The most popular ones made most calls.
29. Which word has the closest meaning to “isolated”
A. Amazed. B. Calm. C. Scared. D. Lonely.
30. The following paragraph can best go after .
Video calling could reproduce(再现) some of the social benefits of living in a group,
according to Rebecca Kleinberger, of Northeastern University and first author of the study.

Core skills
To go with the development of the times, everyone must learn all kinds of skills. Of all the skills I have learned, I consider the following skills to be the most important.
Above all, communication skills are necessary because we have to interact with people. With them, we can make ourselves understood easily. Besides, time management skills are also important. They can help us focus on the most important things. More importantly, they help us lead a healthy life. Finally, we should have the skills to learn. There isn't always a teacher who can help us in our life. Therefore, we should have the skills to learn by ourselves and solve problems independently.
I think with the help of these skills, we can better prepare ourselves for the future.
