The famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
Western educators have suggested that we introduce the concept of “STEAM” instead of “STEM” –– traditional “core majors” including science, technology, engineering, and math –– since the “A”, which stands for “arts”, is just as important.
And on April 11, China’s Ministry of Education(教育部) issued a guideline. Colleges and universities are required to provide more art-related courses and students need to earn a certain number of art credits(学分) in order to graduate.
These efforts came after many scientific studies had found that art education helps students develop self-confidence and teamwork skills, as well as habits of mind such as problem solving and critical thinking, according to The Washington Post.
It’s true that none of these skills target specific jobs. But as former US ballet dancer Damian Woetzel told The Atlantic, the purpose of art is “to give kids the tools to become adults who are creative, adaptable, and expressive –– capable of having their eyes and ears and senses alive”.
And we can now see how we lost track of our born “artist self” on our way to growing up: We failed to keep our capabilities to see, hear and feel, and became blind, deaf and insensitive adults.
Hopefully, art education can help turn things around.

The little town of Vinci is in the centre of Italy. It is the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, who painted the Mona Lisa. Leonardo wasn’t just an artist. He was also a scientist, engineer, architect and inventor.
Leonardo was born on 15th April, 1452. His father Piero was an ambitious lawyer from Florence. When Leonardo was a teenager, his father sent him to Florence to be an artist’s apprentice. After completing his training, he moved to Milan, where he worked for the powerful Sforza family as an artist, painter and engineer.
In 1516, Kina Francis I of France asked Leonardo to work for him. When Leonardo arrived, he had the Mona Lisa with him, rolled up under his arm. King Francis bought the painting. When the Louvre opened in 1789, it was one of the first paintings put on show. Soon after, Napoleon Bonaparte hung the Mona Lisa in his bedroom at the Tuileries Palace.
The painting first became world-famous in 1911 when it was stolen. One of the Louvre Museum guards took the painting from the wall, hid it under his coat and walked out. He kept it in his apartment for two years and then tried to sell it to a gallery in Florence. It was returned to the Louvre in 1914.
According to the Louvre, 80 per cent of their visitors only want to see the Mona Lisa! Leonardo paints Lisa looking directly at us. He paints in a revolutionary way, without outlines. He blends colours softly together, to create a three-dimensional image. Because Leonardo studied anatomy, he understands exactly how the human body works. Because he was a scientist, he understands exactly how to show light and shade. He seems to see into the heart and mind of Lisa. As a woman in 1503, she had little freedom in her life. But Leonardo paints her inner freedom. He gives her a secret smile, and we want to know what she is thinking.

Most burglars will save themselves by making up stories when they are in trouble.
A small shop sold a lot of nice jewelry, and the owner was always careful to look after the things. One day when a burglar came and tried to take a beautiful necklace, the owner of the shop caught him at once and went to call the police to come. “Please don’t do that!” the burglar said. “I have a wife and three children at home. And I will pay for the necklace.” The owner of the shop felt sorry for the man and he didn’t want to have trouble with the police, so he agreed that the man should pay for the necklace.
But when he gave the necklace to the burglar and asked him to pay the money, the man looked surprised and said, “I don’t want to get anything as expensive as that. Do you have anything cheaper ”

八、One possible version:
Many people like watching TV and so do teenagers. Some of us watch TV every day and many of us love TV series.
Watching TV has both advantages and disadvantages. Watching TV can make us happy and relaxed. It helps us get a great deal of new information and knowledge. We can also know more about the world. However, it is bad for our eyes if we watch TV for a long time. Also, we will not have enough time to study. Some TV programmes are boring and some even have a bad influence on teenagers.
So I think we can watch TV to relax ourselves after we finish our homework. We should watch some interesting and meaningful programmes, such as news, sports and documentaries. But we’d better remember that watching TV once a week is enough. It is necessary for us to spare some time to play outside with friends or stay with our family.2023—2024学年度第一学期期末练习卷
