20. What is the talk mainly about
A. Types of roses. B. Ways of rose packing. C. Tips on rose growing.
【答案】17. C 18. B 19. A 20. C
【解析】
【原文】Some people say roses are difficult to grow. But you have a good chance of success if you start with a few suggestions from experts. You should plant your roses where they can get sunshine for about six hours on bright days. You can buy potted roses, also known as container roses or bare-root plants. Each kind has its fans. Some gardeners say potted roses are easier to plant. They say the roots develop better. But Jeffrey Dinslage, president of Nature Hills Nursery in Omaha Nebraska, points out that bare-root roses come without soil. So they weigh less to transport. Some gardeners advise getting bare-root roses as close to planting time as you can. If they arrive before you are ready to plant them, make sure the packing material is damp. Keep the plants in a cool dark place. You plant the roses while they are resting. The resting plants have no leaves but still need water. When you are growing roses the soil should feel wet deep down. Watering should be done in the morning. But do not water too much. The spots are usually caused by too much water. If your soil is very dry, you can add nutrients to the soil. If insects attack your rose bushes, you may be able to force them off with just a spray of water.

Recently, I experienced a wonderful lesson in how little things still mean a lot. My brother, mother and I live in Hawaii. Our farm is at least a dozen miles from even the most basic of services. Therefore, I take weekly trips to the shop to gel supplies. About a month ago, I finished loading up the car and was about to leave when a piece of paper on the ground caught my eye. I picked it up and read it carefully. Immediately, I was grateful that I had done that___24___
It was a receipt (收据) from the State Motor Vehicle Division, recording the owner's payment of her Vehicle's Registration fees. I put myself in his or her shoes and thought: no one would throw this away. I looked over the receipt for any personal data, perhaps a license plate (车牌) or telephone number, but failed. How could I find the owner in the busy, crowded parking lot Had it been lying there for a few minutes or a week So I checked the date, the fees paid and the name of the owner, who must live in our town. I decided that the best and easiest step to take was to put the receipt in an envelope and send it to the owner first the next morning.
By the end of the week, I received a beautiful “thank you” letter from a woman including a handwritten message and a card. In the letter, the woman explained how the wind took her receipt from a pocket in her car's passenger door. She had searched everywhere for quite some time before giving up.
It felt great to know I had helped someone avoid a loss by doing something that seemed little and unimportant.

C. Little Things Still Mean a Lot D. Think Carefully Before You Act
【答案】24. C 25. C 26. B 27. C

Where in the classroom do you prefer to sit,and why Scientists have discovered that seating preference not only shows students’ personalities, but has a great influence on their school performance.Generally speaking, students show different attitudes depending on where they sit.Based on the research, scientists have developed a funnel-like(像漏斗的) model of “learning zones(区域)” to see the relationship between seating and active learning.
In this model, the mouth of the funnel(A) is the best position for learning.Students in this front area prove to be the most active learners. They show a greater desire(渴求) for learning, which leads them to focus(集中注意力) better and take a more active part than the rest of the class. Those in the neck of the funnel(B) don’t pay the same close attention, but they ask a lot of questions, partly because of the added confidence they feel from being in a safe zone, with others around them.Less desirable is the area “outside the funnel(C,D),” which refers to the side and the back rows, where students take a less active part in classroom activities and find it hard to focus their attention, falling asleep at times.
Studies about learning zones suggest that a change in traditional seating plans can benefit students. In fact,a growing number of teachers have begun less traditional seating plans, such as “U-Type”.There are no side and back areas,so teachers can expect their students to take part in activities more actively and increase student-teacher interaction(互动).
28. According to scientists, students’ learning is greatly influenced by________.
A. the number of students B. the time of class
C. seating positions D. the size of the classroom
29. What advantage do the students sitting in Area B over those in Area C,D .
A. sometimes fall asleep B. feel safe and confident
C. seldom ask their teachers questions D. try to avoid looking directly at the teacher
30. Which of the following is TRUE according to studies in the last paragraph
A. An increasing number of teachers have started to use traditional seating plans.
B Changing the traditional seating plans can be beneficial to students.
C. U-type is better than funnel-like model of “learning zones” .
D. If there are no side and back areas, students must be more active in learning.
31. From which is the text probably taken
A. An education magazine B. An advertisement
C. A life newspaper D. A science textbook
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. B 31. A
【解析】

Off the coast of Formentera, an island, lives seagrass that stretches 15 kilometres. The seagrass, covering several hectares, is made up of a single organism. The grasses are also long-lived, for tens or hundreds of thousands of years. Along with two other kinds of coastal ecosystems—mangrove swamps(红树沼泽)and tidal marshes, seagrass meadows are particularly good at taking carbon dioxide from the air.
This role was highlighted in a report, which was published on March 2nd by UNESCO, on blue carbon—the carbon taken in by Earth's oceanic and coastal ecosystems. In total around 33 billion tons of carbon dioxide, about three-quarters of the world's emissions(排放)in 2019, are locked away in the planet's blue carbon sinks(碳汇). Research by Carlos Duarte, the report's author and a marine ecologist, has shown that one hectare of seagrass can suck as much carbon dioxide each year as 15 hectares of rainforest.
One reason that blue—carbon ecosystems make such effective sinks is that underwater forests are thicker than the land-based woods. They can also trap floating pieces and organic matter, which settles on the sea floor and can double the amount of carbon stored away. They have another advantage, too. Climate change is leading to more wildfires around the world. As forests burn, their carbon stocks are released back into the atmosphere. Unlike forests on land, blue-carbon ecosystems do not burn.
Blue-carbon ecosystems may not be fired, but they remain affected to other sorts of disasters. In May 2020 hurricane Amphan destroyed 1,200 square kilometres of mangrove forest. A marine(海洋的)heatwave in Australian waters in 2010 and 2011 damaged around one third of the world's largest seagrass meadow in Shark Bay. “Mangrove forests can weaken or control waves and provide natural barriers to storm surges. Protecting and expanding them, then, appears to be a must,” said a marine biologist.
32. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A. The real definition of blue carbon.
B. The special features of the seagrass.
C. The doubt about the blue-carbon ecosystems.
D. The capacity of the blue-carbon ecosystems to store carbon.
33. Why can the blue-carbon ecosystems make such effective sinks
A. They aren't influenced by natural disasters.
B. They have great ability to absorb carbon.
C. Their carbon stocks are released back.
D. There are more underwater animals.
34. What do the marine biologist's words mean
A. Mangrove forests are too strong to be broken.
B. Mangrove forests can strengthen waves.
C. Humans should preserve blue-carbon ecosystems.
D. Blue carbon ecosystems can be fired.
35. What is the best title for the text
A Plants in the Ocean Are Better at Storing Carbon
B. The Grasses Can Store More Carbon Than Your Expectation
C. Mangrove Forests Can Control Waves Efficiently
D. Blue-Carbon Ecosystem Are Expanding Much Faster
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. A

How to get kids to respect wildlife
Children who respect wildlife as something worthy of care and protection usually grow up kinder and more considerate and often generate the same positive feelings in those around them. _____36_____ .
Respect their wildness
____37____. And this isn’t always the best thing for the animals — or kids as well. Show kids that animals in their natural habitats are living their best life — and should respect their own qualities.
Respect all the animals
It’s easy for kids to respect those cute and adorable mammals. ____38____ . Habitats need all sorts of animals to stay healthy, so show kids why every insect is important. (For instance, worms keep soil healthy by digging through the dirt.) Kids can learn about those not-so-cute animals by browsing online galleries or photos of insects and bugs.
_____39_____
Out of curiosity, young kids want to chase after a squirrel, or pet a wild rabbit. But human interactions with wildlife can negatively affect animals by changing their natural behavior. Teach children to leave animals alone and observe them from a distance.
Respect their homes
You have taught your child to leave those cute animals alone, but other choices can still harm wildlife. Try to keep kids from taking ‘souvenirs’ that actually are some animals’ home (like shells, nests, or logs). ____40____. That trash includes our leftover food, which can be harmful to some animals. Instead, teach kids about proper animal food by helping them make feeders.
A. Throw trash away, since animals can mistake it for food
B. Let’s bring out kindness in your kids with these simple and positive ideas
C. Respect endangered animals
D. Children tend to project human qualities on animals
E. Keeping art in kids’ lives also helps them understand different animals
F. Respect their privacy
G. But what about all those “scary-looking” ones, such as bees, worms and snakes
【答案】36. B 37. D 38. G 39. F 40. A

【40题详解】
根据下文“That trash includes our leftover food, which can be harmful to some animals.(这些垃圾包括我们剩下的食物,它们可能对一些动物有害)”中的that trash推知,空处内容应与trash有关。A项“Throw trash away, since animals can mistake it for food(把垃圾扔掉,因为动物会误以为是食物)”符合题意。故选A。

When Chase Hansen was only 4 years old, he encountered (邂逅) some homeless people while shopping with his dad and he wanted to help them. After a conversation between the father and son about homelessness, they decided to do something for the homeless.
They convinced a local Jamba Juice store to donate more than 100 smoothies (沙冰) and the pair gave them out to homeless people in a park.
After that, they came up with an even better idea. “I wanted a way to get to know people better. So, my dad and I decided to start taking some of the homeless people we’d met out for a meal,” said Chase.
Now, six years later, the pair still spend their weekends taking homeless people out for a meal and they start conversations with their new acquaintances during the meal.
“I would ask them where they were from, what their hobbies were,” said Chase. “And sometimes they’d share their stories of how they became homeless.”
“A lot of people walk right past homeless people and don’t see the person,” said Chase. “Now I know they’re people just like us. They need care from others so that they won’t feel so lonely in the world.”
Thousands of lunches later, they run a self-funded charity called Project Empathy (同情) to help inspire others to meet and create relationships with the homeless people in their neighborhoods.
“I just want more people to know that they can do this in their own town,” said Chase. “When you have a meal with a homeless person or just sit and talk to them, it helps to lift their life.”
Hansen said that this way of spending quality time with his son has changed both of them. “Chase and I realized that the country needed an army of people to practice empathy. By doing something as simple as taking a homeless person for a meal, we could maybe inspire others to do the game,” said Hansen.
Paragraph 1:
Soon more people joined them.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The father and son clearly know they couldn’t change the social-economic situations.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Soon more people joined them. They not only provided the homeless with meals, but also provided psychological care for them, especially for the homeless children. All these made them gain confidence in their future life. Many of them experienced loneliness and despair before the Hansens came into their life. But now they have become trusted friends with each other and have made joint efforts to do something for more homeless people. They also hope more people will provide more ideas for the charity.
Paragraph 2:
The father and son clearly know they couldn’t change the social-economic situations. However, they can change the lives of homeless people even just with a simple meal. Somebody’s care can help to make a huge difference to improving the lives of homeless people, because what they really need sometimes is not financial assistance. Psychological support and comfort might play a more important role. Chase Hansen proves that you are never too young to make a positive change in the world.

B. Changing the traditional seating plans can be beneficial to students.
C. U-type is better than funnel-like model of “learning zones” .
D. If there are no side and back areas, students must be more active in learning.

A. Plants in the Ocean Are Better at Storing Carbon
B. The Grasses Can Store More Carbon Than Your Expectation
C. Mangrove Forests Can Control Waves Efficiently
D. Blue-Carbon Ecosystem Are Expanding Much Faster
