With a box, a lamp, and a piece of white paper, Hakobyan Aleta handmade a simple shadow play ( 皮 影 戏 ) stage. Believing shadow play is an excellent way to tell stories of Chinese myths, legends, and culture, she has posted videos
online, which went viral, receiving 6 million likes and 10 million views.
Coming to China years ago, the girl has visited places like Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai, saying she likes the country’s various folk tales and wonderful myths. For a long time, she had been seeking for a creative storytelling way to share the folk tales she collected Luckily, she came across a shadow play show in a museum in Xi’an, and realized this was what she wanted to do. The staff invited me to see the puppets, and I was impressed by the colors and flexibility,” Aleta recalled.
Arriving home, Aleta started her research to make a shadow play stage. Learning from videos, she built it with a box, a light, white paper, and other tools. Aleta also tried to make shadow puppets. Unlike the traditional way of making shadow puppets with animal skins, Aleta printed puppet figures on paper and then carefully cut and carved them into shapes. The inventor of the first mobile phone, American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested people should stop scrolling (刷屏) and “get a life”. But of course, once we start scrolling or watching videos, we just can’t give up the habit. There’s even a word—a phubber—to describe a person who ignores the real people around them because they are concentrating on their phones.
A study from King’s College London found young people they studied couldn’t control the amount of time they spent on their phone. Such addictive behaviour means that people become anxious or upset if they can’t have constant access, which can cause anxiety and mental health issues. Psychologist Jean Twenge says we’re all ashamed of “repeatedly checking our phone if we’re waiting for a text or getting really into social media, then looking up and realising that an hour has passed.”
Another study by the London School of Economics and Political Science suggests we don’t just look at our phones because we receive a text or email. The people they studied felt naturally eager to interact with their phone, just as a smoker would light a cigar. Prof. Saadi Lahlou, co-author of the study, told the BBC, “We must learn tricks to avoid the desire when we want to concentrate or have good social relations.”
One solution could be an app that rewards students for time spent away from their phones. Another option is replacing your smartphone with a dumbphone that has none of the attractive elements taking your attention away. But most importantly, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!

Facial recognition technology is mostly connected with uses such as the identification of human faces, but scientists believe they’ve found a new use for it — conserving seals (海豹).
A research team at Colgate University has developed SealNet, a database of seal faces created by taking pictures of
seals in Maine’s Casco Bay. The team found the tool’s accuracy in identifying the ocean animals is close to 100%, which is a great achievement in an ecosystem home to thousands of seals.
Krista Ingram, a biology professor at Colgate, said the researchers are working on expanding their database to make it available to other scientists. She also said broadening the database to include rare species, such as the Hawaiian seal, could help save those species. And categorizing ( 分 类 ) seal faces and using machine learning to identify them can also help scientists know clearly where in the ocean seals are. “Understanding their patterns really helps,” she said. “For moving ocean animals that move around a lot and are hard to photograph in the water, we need to be able to tell them apart,” she
said.
SealNet is designed to detect the face in a picture, collect it and recognize it based on facial patterns such as eyes and nose shape. The Colgate team published its paper in April in the scientific journal. The paper said that the “image data that can be dealt with using SealNet software offers an important tool for ecological and behavioral studies of ocean animals in the developing field of conservation technology.”
Tjomme Dooper, head of partnerships and growth from IT company FruitPunch, said he was getting a few scientists to work on a challenge to make SealNet simpler. “What this does is help the biologists study the behavior of seals, and also population changes,” Dooper said. “Seals are an important indicator species for the ecosystem around them.”
