Karla, a recent graduate of one high school in Los Angeles, designed an 18th century-style dress for the yearly “Stuck at Prom” competition and was named a finalist last week.
Unlike what we normally expect, the dress is surprisingly made out of duct tape(胶带)Tape is so rigid and you can’t move it like fabric. So it was really challenging to make it all come together. But the fashion-forward teenager overcame that challenge and is now competing for votes to win the grand prize: a $10, 000 scholarship.
Though it’s Karla’name officially in the competition, she said the entire process is more of a collective effort of her family, especially her parents. She and her mom spent at least 120 hours, over many days, working on the dress by trial and error, and used 14 rolls of tape.
“I really love fashion. It’s a really big passion of mine, and I’m willing to try any style.” she said. She often spends hours looking at outfit ideas or different styles, from the 70s to Gothic to Rococo, on Pinterest and TikTok-which is how she found the competition. But it wasn’t until a recent visit to the Getty Museum-the only field trip she took in high school-that she found her inspiration from the 18th century French paintings featuring lavish, ornate dresses and eventually created the possibly award-winning dress.
“It means a lot to me that I was able to make it this far with the support of my parents. As the first generation college student in our family, I wouldn’t want my parents to pay for my tuition(学费)Although there is a long way to go to get the $10, 000 prize, it would really help my parents, and we’re feeling confident and hopeful that we can win.” Karla said. She plans to study business marketing in college, ideally focusing on the fashion industry.
4. What do we know about Karla
A. She learned about the competition by chance.
B. Her parents can’t afford her tuition for college.
C. She entered a competition and won the grand prize.
D. She designed an 18th century-style dress independently
5. What inspired Karla to create this special dress
A The rigid duct tape. B. The “Stuck at Prom” competition.
C. The French paintings in the Getty Museum. D. The different styles on Pinterest and TikTok.
6. Which of the following best describes Karla
A. Generous and thankful. B. Ambitious and well-rounded.
C. Creative and thoughtful. D. Determined and humorous.
7. What is the passage mainly about
A. A girl’s supportive family. B. A dress made out of duct tape.
C. An eye-catching fashion competition. D. A teen’s effort to win a scholarship.

Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug, which doctors suggest we all should cut down on.
“It seems like every time I study an illness and search for the first cause I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million adults have diabetes (糖尿病) . Why “Sugar, we believe is one of the culprits, if not the major reason,” says Johnson.
Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
So what is the solution It’s: obvious that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals (谷物) to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it.
But there are those who are fighting back against sugar. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier food like fruit. Other schools are growing their own food in gardens, or building facilities like walking tracks so students and others in the community can exercise.
8. What do scientists think of sugar
A. It benefits our health. B. It causes us to become dependent on it.
C. It is less addictive than drugs. D. It should be taken under a doctor’s guidance.
9. What does the underlined word “culprits” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Diseases. B. Poor diets.
C. Causes of a problem. D. Unknown things.
10. Why is it so hard to avoid sugar
A. It’s in so many foods and drinks. B. We cannot survive without it.
C. It gives us much needed energy. D. We like it too much.
11. What is the best title for the passage
A. Ways to Avoid Sugar. B. Good Sugar VS Bad Sugar.
C. Illnesses Caused by Sugar. D. Our Addiction to Sugar.
Scientists who study happiness know that being kind to others can improve happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can better a person’s mood (心情), for example. Every day life affords many chances for such actions, yet people do not always make use of them.
In a set of studies published online in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Nick Epley, a behavioral scientist, and I examined a possible explanation. We found that people who perform random (随机的) acts of kindness do not always realize how much of an effect they are having on another person. People usually think little of how others value these acts.
Across our investigations, several results came out. For one, both givers and receivers of the acts of kindness were in more positive moods than usual after these exchanges. For another, it was clear that givers undervalued (低估) their effect; receivers felt much better than the kind givers expected. The receivers also really recognized these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did.
At first, we studied acts of kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But later we found that givers undervalued their positive effect on strangers as well. In one experiment, givers in a public park gave away hot chocolate to strangers on a cold winter’s day. Once again, the experience was more positive than the givers expected for the receivers. While the people giving the hot chocolate saw the act as unimportant, it really mattered to the receivers.
Our findings suggest that what might seem small to the givers could matter a great deal to the receivers. Since these warm acts can promote our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can
12. What do givers seldom think about
A Comments about their acts.
B. Effects of their acts on others.
C. Scientists’ explanation.
D. Taste of happiness.
13. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Investigations. B. Moods. C. Acts. D. Exchanges.
14. Why does the author mention “gave away hot chocolate to strangers” in paragraph 4
A. To explain a rule. B. To prove a finding.
C. To present a fact. D. To show a topic.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Warm Acts Are Usually Valued
B. Warm Acts Are Necessary For People
C. Kindness Can Have Unexpectedly Positive Results
D. Kindness Can Unexpectedly Brighten Our Own Day

A. The rigid duct tape. B. The “Stuck at Prom” competition.
C. The French paintings in the Getty Museum. D. The different styles on Pinterest and TikTok.
6. Which of the following best describes Karla
A. Generous and thankful. B. Ambitious and well-rounded.
C. Creative and thoughtful. D. Determined and humorous.
7. What is the passage mainly about

“It seems like every time I study an illness and search for the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson.
B 9. C 10. A 11. D
根据第一段“Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug, which doctors suggest we all should cut down on.(许多科学家认为,我们对糖的喜爱实际上可能是一种上瘾。当我们吃或喝含糖食物时,糖会进入我们的血液,影响我们大脑中让我们感觉良好的部分。然后这种美好的感觉消失了,让我们想要更多。所有美味的食物都有这种作用,但糖的作用尤其强烈。这样看来,它实际上是一种令人上瘾的药物,医生建议我们都应该减少使用)”可知,科学家认为糖使我们变得依赖它。故选B。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure and up to 347 million have diabetes. Why (全球有三分之一的成人有高血压,高达3. 47亿的人有糖尿病。为什么?)”可知,后文应该在说原因,糖是其中的一个原因,但并非主要原因。故划线词意思是“问题的原因”。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals (谷物) to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it.(问题是,在当今世界,这是极其难以避免的。从早餐麦片到餐后甜点,我们的食物中越来越多地充斥着它)”可知,难以避免糖的原因是绝大多数的食物里面都含有糖,故选A。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. (许多科学家认为,我们对糖的喜爱实际上可能是一种上瘾)”以及文章介绍了人们对糖上瘾的问题,所以D项“我们对糖的依赖”是本文最好的标题。故选D。
At first we studied acts of kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family.
Since these warm acts can promote our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can
12. What do givers seldom think about
A. Comments about their acts.
B. Effects of their acts on others.
C. Scientists’ explanation.
D. Taste of happiness.
13. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Investigations. B. Moods. C. Acts. D. Exchanges.
14. Why does the author mention “gave away hot chocolate to strangers” in paragraph 4
A. To explain a rule. B. To prove a finding.
C. To present a fact. D. To show a topic.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Warm Acts Are Usually Valued
B. Warm Acts Are Necessary For People
C. Kindness Can Have Unexpectedly Positive Results
D. Kindness Can Unexpectedly Brighten Our Own Day
B 13. C 14. B 15. C
根据第二段中的“We found that people who perform random (随机的) acts of kindness do not always realize how much of an effect they are having on another person.(我们发现,进行随机善举的人并不总是意识到他们对另一个人的影响有多大。)”
them通常指代的是上文中的名词复数;根据第三段中的“The receivers also really recognized these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did.(接收者也真正认识到这些行为比表演它们的人“更大”。)”
根据第四段中的“But later we found that givers undervalued their positive effect on strangers as well. (但后来我们发现,给予者也低估了他们对陌生人的积极影响)”推知,下文提到给陌生人送咖啡这一事例是为了证明研究发现是正确的。故选B项。
15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据尾段中的“Our findings suggest that what might seem small to the givers could matter a great deal to the receivers.(我们的研究结果表明,对给予者来说似乎很小的东西对接受者来说可能很重要。)”
